So much to laugh about this week, but where to begin? Well, how about with Harvard… In the previous episode, Jake & nathan said that students who put their name on letters, should own up to it. Since then, things have gotten worse for Harvard. Turns out, Harvard has some fairly rich donors, and they're not happy Harvard hasn't stood up for Israel. Welp, at least in one case, specifically that of billionaire Les Wexner, he can't take the moral high ground. Lex was apparently good buddies with Jeffrey Epstein. Hmmm… why is that name familiar, again? Speaking of crimes against humanity: Private Travis King skedaddled across the border between North and South Korea, and in the wrong direction. Why would anyone flee to North Korea? Well, there is a reason, and it's pretty awful.  Also: former Trump lawyer Sidney Powell has pled guilty to multiple charges against her. What charges are those? Oh, you know… just the little thing of trying to subvert democracy by lying about the 2020 presidential election.  Will this affect the case against Trump? He's supposedly Teflon Don, but when everyone but the dumbest of the dumb knows you're guilty… Finally: Victoria's Secret is finally dialing back its stance on promoting unhealthy bodies, football legend Michael Irvin is calling out his idiot son, and piece of human garbage Joran van der Loot finally admitted to murdering Natalee Holloway.  Can we please just throw him into gen pop, naked? Idiots on Parade: we mock the news, so you don't have to. Tune in and get your giggle on. Find Jake at @jakevevera Find nathan at nathantimmel.com

A:  Let's say you get a new update, right? You know, you're there, you're on email, and you get a new update, right? You don't want to update because it's going to take time away from you.   Key Takeaways: “The most important thing is to keep all of your skills sharp, and particularly up to date. And that means learning. Learning new skills as you go along.” - Vicky Oliver “If you're a gig worker, and you're doing part-time jobs, and you're going from place-to-place freelancing, you really have to stay up on that technology. You have to be able to adapt and learn. And if you don't know it, know that you are able to figure it out as you go along.” - Vicky Oliver “That's just a reality that we have to sort of recognize the technology, we must build the skills. And it is time-consuming to do it. And I would say you have to do it when you have the opportunity to do it.” - Vicky Oliver “It takes a little bit of an adjustment, and you have to agree with it and it needs to agree with you. Sam and Emma host Ryan Cooper, national correspondent at The Week, to discuss his new book How Are You Going to Pay For That? Smart Answers to the Dumbest Questions in Politics, on how the self-immolating ideas of the free market have locked us into a vision of government that is impotent in the face of any economic stress on the lower classes, and required to act, often violently, when it is impacting the capitalists. Ryan begins by looking at this question of “how to pay for that,” and how it reflects this view of the economy as a pre-political entity, with liberalism's and libertarianism's belief that government borrowing on behalf of the economy, alongside most other government regulation, is inherently bad, and that the best government is no government. However, throughout the history of capitalism, all the way back to early industrialization in England, progress has been defined by economic and labor regulations, from child labor to maternity rights, to even simply forty-hour work weeks, and yet all of these developments were pushed back against at the time, as working against natural relations of human society. Moving towards the New Deal era revelations, this brings them to the absolute impossibility of a “self-regulating economy,” as economies are literally products of structures of policy with active management, active redistribution of wealth, and active regulation, and just as those elements had been working to serve and bolster the power and “rights” of the capitalist class they can work to serve the people actually engaging in labor. Ryan, Sam, and Emma then dive into the driving force of property, and the ideology of “properterianism” that has been central to all economic development, viewing property as a sacred object, and foundational to the social order, thus becoming the driving force behind the maintenance of the status quo through violence, and therefore the biggest driver of the state's monopoly on legitimate force, from the colonial genocides and displacements to contemporary policing. Lastly, they wrap up the interview by touching on correlations between wealth and quantity of work, looking at how the ‘60s saw Europe take their wealth and work towards better privilege for workers, turning it into more free time, with mandatory paid vacation, sick leave, maternity leave, and more, while the US has instead worked to continue to build the wealth more exclusively for the capitalists, meaning more and more hours for less efficient building of wealth. Sam and Emma wrap up with updates on Russia's building forces on the Ukrainian border, Jim Clyburn's push for an anti-union Supreme Court Justice, and Mike Pence's revelation of being a true #2 (this is a Pence-il joke). And in the Fun Half: Gregory from Oklahoma calls in to explore MR's impact on his Youtube channel “The Green Corn Rebellion Show,” and the MR crew dive into various responses to Pence's statement on his role in overturning the election, from Bannon's rejection of his “stone-cold” cowardice, to Rubio jumping right on Mike's wagon, using the Sinema excuse of “but what if THEY do it to US.” They also cover the Joe Rogan drama from this weekend, and where he fits into “corporate media,” before Michael from Miami discusses Democrats' inability to ignore bad faith discussions, the Common Sense Cowboy pitches releasing dogs at the border, and Charlie Kirk forgets his Bitcoin password, plus, your calls and IMs! Joining us for this episode of the 3Sixty Insights #HRTechChat is Tom Tonkin, Ph.D., member of our Global Executive Advisory Council. A former colleague of mine, Dr. Tonkin is now CEO of The Conservatory Group, where he and his team "help executives, middle-managers and sales leaders to self-actualize in their roles." Dr. Tonkin's background in technology for the enterprise stretches back many years and includes just shy of two decades at Oracle in a multitude of roles spanning sales, technology enablement, professional services, and more. My conversation with Dr. Tonkin centered on diversity, equity and inclusion. Through his observations, informed partially by his doctoral work, Dr. Tonkin believes several things must happen for DE&I initiatives and ideas to move beyond awareness -- frankly, only the first step of many that must take place. For example, he believes strongly that so-identified historically privileged stakeholders' active, observable empathizing with women's and minorities' struggles in these areas will help to advance DE&I efforts overall. It's a great point. He sees much utility in the role of various affinity-related and other employee resource groups in giving voice and establishing representation for women and minorities in the workplace. The usefulness of these groups, however, while necessary, falls short in advancing the actual equity and inclusion sought. Our discussion eventually landed on the scientifically underpinned idea of neurodiversity. Who are the neurodiverse? They are, mainly, those who place along the spectrum of autism. Our world, Dr. Tonkin explains, is structured around the neurotypical's way of thinking. The vast majority of people are neurotypical. Their minds are considered, for lack of a better term, normal. Real-world experience shows, however, that the neurodiverse have much to contribute to the success of teams. A program at SAP is one example. The problem is that they struggle, because of their deficiencies in social interaction, to get hired. Here is where our discussion segued into the potential for psychometrics and other tools to help organizations make sure the neurodiverse make their way through the recruiting process and get a "fair shot" at joining the organization in order to offer the employer their very particular, valuable skills. The idea is that this ultimately benefits organizational performance. Thinking even further into the future of work, we pondered the possibility that artificial intelligence may one day equip both the neurodiverse and neurotypical with "mental prosthetics" that might greatly help them understand each other and collaborate optimally. Visitors here really do owe it to themselves to watch this especially fascinating episode of the podcast. Along with his work leading The Conservatory Group, Dr. Tonkin is heavily involved in organizations whose missions intersect with these and related ideas. One, SAMI (short for Smart Answers for Modern Issues), bills itself as a "Real Time Crowd-Sourced Solution for Soft Skills. Another, aptly named Diversity Equity Inclusion, provides a "SaaS-driven solution that makes diversity, equity, and inclusion high-tech and easy to understand for any organization or business."

Mark Mirchandani is joined again by Priyanka Vergadia this week for an ML-filled interview with Radu Miclaus of Lucidworks. Lucidworks, a company specializing in information retrieval, strives to make data searching easier for developers and users. Building off Solr, Lucidworks created Fusion, an environment more conducive to easy AI-enhanced query capabilities, better scalability, and more. With Fusion, developers can take advantage of the highly advanced relevance tuning tools such as query rewrites, which analyze user behavior and automatically rewrite queries based on that information. On the tech side, Fusion was built with a combination of Java, Kubernetes to increase scalability, Solr management tools, and logging and reporting tools. The engineers at Lucidworks have created Fusion-specific system-enhancing pieces as well, including a machine learning service that allows data scientists to train their models elsewhere and plug them in for a completely customized experience. The team also created Smart Answers, which is a Q-And-A system built on a search engine that can connect to chatbots, virtual assistants, and others. Radu goes into detail explaining the Smart Answers system and how the layers of the project work together. We also learn about the customization capabilities and integration of Smart Answers. Radu wraps up the show with interesting use-case stories and how Fusion is working in the real world. In the future, Lucidworks will be available right in the GCP marketplace! Radu Miclaus Radu has over 12 years of experience in the data science space with applications in general machine learning architecture, search, customer analytics, risk and financial analysis. At Lucidworks, Radu focuses on low-code AI for search developers, pluggable machine learning for data scientists, and cloud managed services that offload the burden of operating search applications.
