I really enjoy meeting and speaking with people who have made boating a big part of their lifestyle, especially people like Steve Payne, who went from knowing next to nothing about boats to living and traveling through Europe on one. Steve has been able to use his skills as a photographer, creator, and community builder to live the boating lifestyle and share it with the world. His youtube channel, Jaywalking the World, recently surpassed 100 episodes. He has sent out thousands of Friendly Flags in an effort to foster a communal spirit among like minded boaters. After a few silly jobs, I decided to become a photographer. I had cards printed up before I even owned a camera.  Started out working for the music press and ended up working for The Evening Standard, London's newspaper, but I slowly slipped back into the music industry and ended up directing a bunch of live concert videos. Then I got invited to do a couple of jobs in Los Angeles and fell in love with the place ….. so I stayed ….. for 27 years. I returned to the UK to look after my elderly mother, after she had floated off into the ether, I had some choices to make. To be honest, I didn't see a great future in the slowly declining United Kingdom, so I bought a boat and headed south. I wasn't even sure where I was aiming for, but Malta kept creeping into the conversation. After two wonderful years travelling on the rivers and canals of France, then around the coast of France, Italy and Sicily, I ended up in Malta. It's been quite an adventure. In this episode, Dr Louise Newson is joined by a long-time friend, retired consultant urologist, Steve Payne. Together they discuss Steve and his wife Jan's experience of her breast cancer and subsequent treatment that led to estrogen depletion. Steve describes the decision-making process they went through as a couple when Jan's quality of life deteriorated due to severe urine and kidney infections, as well as other symptoms relating to a lack of estrogen. The experts talk about how some people's experience in cancer care clinics can fall short of patients and their partners being given full and balanced information into how cancer treatments will affect your hormones and what this potentially means for your quality of life. Steve shares his honest reflections and insights about cancer care clinics and offers invaluable advice for those navigating these complex and confusing decisions at such a difficult time. Steve's advice for making decisions about cancer treatments: Ask what the benefits, and especially the downsides, of the treatment are. It is key that you understand all the pros and cons of a treatment being recommended to you. If it's treatment for cancer, ask about the pure cancer survival rates – once deaths from other causes have been removed from the data – to make sure you know the actual level of survival benefit that the suggested treatment offers. If you're having side effects from breast cancer treatment due to a lack of estrogen, have a discussion about the pros and cons of taking HRT, for your particular type of cancer. Ask how taking HRT could improve your daily life and wellbeing and what benefits HRT offers for bone and heart health in the future. Ask how would taking HRT affect your pure cancer survival rate. Following the success and wide spread media coverage of our Children’s eye screening app in Primary Schools across Leicestershire, we have identified a need for a similar pack in Early Years settings. We've worked with East Midlands dance based artist Oksana Tyminska, who has over 20 years of experience to develop a practical resource pack called – Let's get moving. The pack contains resources and activities that will stimulate children's creativity and support the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. It also gives Early Years Practitioners information about children's eye development and reinforces the importance of encouraging parents to take their children to have regular eye tests. Steve Payne, Operations Director at Vista said: "This is an excellent opportunity for nurseries and others in an Early Years setting to get involved at one of our workshops, get a free practical resource pack and understand how through the activities in the pack they can spot possible eye conditions, in their own nurseries and Early Years setting."

Leaders are teachers, recruiting great talent and balancing career and family. Tim Selgo Bio: Retired this year after twenty years as the Director of Athletics at Grand Valley State University. Grand Valley has been nothing short of a powerhouse at the NCAA Division II level, claiming the Directors' Cup as the top overall athletic program ten times. Under Tim's leadership, Laker teams have won 161 conference championships, 74 NCAA regional championships and 18 national championships. Tim was named Division II AD of the Year three times by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), and this past year he became the first Division II athletic director selected to serve as president of that organization in its over 50 year existence. Though retired as an AD, Tim is now a consultant with Athletics Staffing and Consultants, where he advises athletic departments on leadership training and staffing. He will be inducted into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame this fall. The best coaches are the best teachers, and that skill translates well to administration. This isn't fantasy sports; you can't point and click your way to succes How did you approach the hiring of coaches and staff? What were you looking for, both positively and negatively? Must surround yourself with the best people As AD you're the coach of the coaches, staff and student-athletes; it's a teaching position…true in many leadership positions in/out of athletics Mistake early on to be the “change agent” prior to observing/listening You have to have patience if you want to build something that will last Hiring people is a leader's most important job It took time with Brian Kelly; people wanted him gone He was 5-5 in his tenth year at GVSU Went and fought to get him a new four year contract that year Be open to all types of candidates; the best could come from anywhere Prefers those coming up through the ranks (Examples in volleyball, soccer, track/field) Easy to make the sexy hire to win the press conference, but that is almost always meaningless You have talked about how proud you are of the success across all of your programs. How did you create a culture where that was valued, when I'm sure it would have been easy to make things all about football? (went back to prior question) Critical to develop those best people That was GVSU's philosophy when he arrived, and that was important to him taking the job More than resources, which are important, people want to know you care Be there/present, especially when it matters most – in competition All the kids work hard Exit surveys ask whether kids felt they had admin support Said yes because admin was there; not because of material support From our interactions at NACDA, you were always a great connector of people. How did you develop that skill or is it something you have always had? People will make you successful, and I love people and being part of a team Ex.
