Summary No guest today. Just me musing on the upcoming Father's Day celebration. Given that my father passed away almost forty years ago, I get reflective as the holiday approaches and, more so, as the years between his passing and my age increase. In this episode, I explore why I've been thinking about him more, what I remember about him, why there are gaps in my knowledge, and what I would ask him if I could. My dad was a complex man—perhaps all fathers are—because he was a product of a generation he understood and one that he didn't always. Over the years, I celebrated Father's Day by giving my dad traditional gifts, such as a circular saw, barbecue equipment, or a history book. He always appreciated the gifts, but I wonder if he might have appreciated a conversation more, the result of me asking him questions in an attempt to understand him better. I'd like to think that he would hear my questions as caring on my part. His responses, in turn, would be a gift to me.

Summary No guest today in what is my first episode of the new year. I promise no New Year's resolutions except one: to read and digest as many books as I can during the year. Given my interest in books, I was curious to know what some of my colleagues, friends, and family members will read in 2024. So, I contacted more than 40 of them, asking them for a brief bio, their book of choice, and why that title might find its way to their nightstand. I thought that maybe I'd hear from a few, but that many might be too busy to respond, given the fast-approaching holiday. Their responses poured in: Jesse Kohler is the President and Chair of The Change Campaign and also serves as Executive Director of the Campaign for Trauma-Informed Policy and Practice. Going to read Preventing and Healing Climate Traumas: A Guide to Building Resilience and Hope in Communities by Bob Doppelt. Because the climate crisis is widely traumatizing. Promoting support across our society to work through it together is one of the most critical callings of our time. Paul McNicholls is a lay historian and author. Going to read Victory to Defeat: The British Army 1918–40 by Richard Dannatt and Robert Lyman. Because what happened to the British Army between the First and Second World Wars explains why they were summarily defeated by the Germans and had to be evacuated from the beaches at Dunkirk in 1940. Frank Zaccari is a best-selling author and CEO of Life Altering Events, LLC. Going to read The Passion Test by Janet and Chris Attwood. Because over my long time on the planet, my passion – or what I thought was my passion – has changed many times. Now, in my semi-retirement, this book will help me focus on finding my next passion where I can make a difference. Neil C. Hughes is a freelance technology journalist, podcast host and engineer, and the producer of "Tech Talks Daily" and "Tech Fusion" by Citrix Ready. Going to read Freedom to Think: Protecting a Fundamental Human Right in the Digital Age by Susie Alegr. Because this title will deepen my understanding of the intersection between technology, privacy, and human rights in the digital age. Melissa Hughes, Ph.D. is a neuroscience researcher, speaker, and author of Happy Hour with Einstein and Happier Hour with Einstein: Another Round. Going to read Misbelief by Dan Ariely. Because the human brain is so incredible and so incredibly flawed (and because I read everything that Dan Ariely writes!) And Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things by Adam Grant. Because we all have hidden potential begging to be discovered. Valerie Gordon is a former Emmy-winning television producer who brings the Art of Storytelling for Impact and Influence to audiences and corporate leaders. Going to read Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things by Adam Grant. Because I found his previous works to be insightful and helpful in my business as well as in meeting my own goals. I recommend it to anyone interested in the human mind and its impact on realizing our potential. Rich Gassen is a print production manager at UW-Madison and also leads a community of practice for supervisors where we explore topics on leadership and staff development. Going to read Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things by Adam Grant. Because I have always sought to improve myself and those around me to achieve more through better processes, incorporating efficiencies, and harnessing strengths. I feel that this book will bring me to another level in being able to do that. Sarah Elkins is a StrengthFinder coach and story consultant, keynote speaker, podcast host, and the author of Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will. Going to read Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson. Because I've become especially sensitive to representation over the past few years, and I talk about wanting to support all people. Reading a book by a person of color and understanding her back story is one way to help me do that. Diane Wyzga is a global podcaster, a story expert who helps clients clarify ideas and amplify messaging, and a hiker – who walks the talk. Going to read The Perfection Trap - Embracing the Power of Good Enough by Thomas Curran. Because as I've become aware of our culture's dangerous obsession with perfection, I want to learn to step away from my own focus on it. Bill Whiteside is a retired software salesman who is now writing a book about Winston Churchill and a little-known event from World War II. Going to read Larry McMurtry: A Life by Tracy Daugherty. Because after spending the past five years researching my book with my nose in books about Britain and France in 1940, it's going to be refreshing to read just for fun once again. McMurtry's personality and career as a bookstore owner and a highly regarded author – “Lonesome Dove," “The Last Picture Show” and “Terms of Endearment” – fascinate me. Mark Reid is a maker of traditional handmade Japanese paper and host of the Zen Sammich podcast. Going to read The Moon and Sixpence by W. Somerset Maugham. Because the main character's internal moral challenges and the battle with societal expectations are compelling for me to read about and contemplate. Mark O'Brien is the founder and principal of O'Brien Communications Group, a B2B brand-management and marketing-communications firm, and host of The Anxious Voyage, a syndicated radio show about life's trials and triumphs. Going to read Lyrical and Critical Essays by Albert Camus. Because as a longtime fan of Camus' existential work, I look forward to stretching my thick Irish noggin to let in a tad more light – as I always try to do. Hope Blecher is an educational consultant and the founder of Hope's Compass, www.HopesCompass.org, a non-profit that helps members of the community and visitors to interact with survivors of the Holocaust and children of survivors through arts, music, poetry, prose, and more. Going to (re)read The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exuperty. Because I experience something new each time I read it. And Art Matters: Because Your Imagination Can Change the World by Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell. Because I'm curious about what these authors will say that will help me continue on my own pathway of exploring art. Christine Mason is the Cultivating Resilience podcast co-host, educational psychologist researcher, entrepreneur, and yoga instructor/mindfulness coach. Going to read From Beirut to Jerusalem by Thomas L. Friedman. Because Friedman knows the region exceptionally well, this book will provide me with a greater understanding of the underlying regional and religious tensions and conflicts and also prepare me to lead others in a deeper discussion toward a potential resolution and peace. Tammy Hader is a retired accountant, a lifetime Kansan, a storyteller, a caregiver, and an author. (See above.) Going to read Bowling Alone by Robert Putnam. Because our relationships – our social capital – continue to be degraded in the current environment, so I want to study it, defend against it, and learn how to shift myself and my community into improved connections. Cindy House is the author of Mother Noise, a memoir about her recovery from addiction. She is a regular opener for David Sedaris on his book lecture circuit. She is also my memoir instructor. Going to read Art Monster: Unruly Bodies in Feminist Art by Lauren Elkin. Because the book looks at women artists and their work as a reaction against the patriarchy. In these days of watching the GOP war against women, it seems especially important as a woman in the arts to consider how my work can be a protest against extreme political positions. Susan Rooks – the Grammar Goddess – is an editor/proofreader who helps nonfiction/business content authors of books/blogs/websites and podcasters and their episode transcriptions look and sound as smart as they are. Going to read Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia, MD. Because as I age, I'm interested in doing everything I can to stay alive in a healthy manner. Steve Ehrlich is a lifelong educator and has an equally long-standing calling in fly fishing. He combines those two loves in classes on the lessons of fly fishing and its treasured literature for personal and professional growth, renewal and healing, and social change. Going to read An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us by Ed Yong. Because I've always been intrigued by the interconnectedness of things, especially the things we can't fully understand. Such a mystery is at the heart of this book, which is about how animals are connected to one another in so many ways and in a manner that most of us have difficulty comprehending. Annette Taylor is a rogue researcher of evolutionary psychology. Going to finish We Are Electric by Sally Adee – but doing so scares me... Because it seems like the author is justifying our “merging” with AI or at least romanticizing our ever increasing entanglements with technology. And since I like to simplify life using a cave-dweller perspective, this idea freaks me out. Leon Ikler is a commercial photographer primarily shooting tabletop and small room scenes in the studio along with a mix of location work. Going to read Democracy Awakening by Heather Cox Richardson. Because in these contentious times with the nation so divided, I like how she frames today's issues against what has taken place in the past. I feel it is essential to know our history so we can try to avoid making the same mistakes again. Rita Grant is a former award-winning video producer. Going to reread The United States of Arugula by David Kamp. Because it's a great reminder of how our current American culinary landscape was created. I'm ending with Rita because she also sent in another suggestion. Not a book, but a song – "You Can't Take That Away From Me," sung by the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald. As Rita noted, "The lyrics will stand the test of time. They're a testament to what we hold in our hearts and imagination that can never be taken from us."
Summary: No man wants to fail his wife or kids. Despite loud cries to the contrary in our culture, we men are assigned the position of head of our marriage, which means if we love our wives well, they will flourish. As those assigned the role of father, our concrete love for our kids is designed to prepare them to see and welcome the parallel but invisible love of God the Father. This strategic position means we must win the battle to defeat our own selfishness, building a pattern of denying ourselves to meet the needs of our wife and children. This episode examines how it is that we daily tap into the power of Christ in us to overcome our default self-preoccupation, learn to die to ourselves, and better focus on meeting the needs of others, not only loving well the wife and kids we cherish but showing Christ's love to those God has placed around us.For Further Prayerful Thought: What are some of the things that you think blind men to their own self-centeredness?How have you seen the action of putting the love of SELF above love for God and others bear destructive fruit?Of the five ways we examined to overcome selfishness and sacrificially love others, which is the hardest to do for you? Which is the easiest? For the printed version of this message click here. For a summary of topics addressed by podcast series, click here. For FREE downloadable studies on men's issues click here.To make an online contribution to enable others to hear about the podcast: (Click link and scroll down to bottom left).

Show Notes: In this podcast, learn the social readiness signs that would indicate your daughter is ready to try social media Learn how the teenage brain is more susceptible to addictions, risky behaviors, and the need to belong and fit in and be included by peers. Because of these vulnerabilities, Dr. Jordan lays out why teen girls are at risk for misusing social media and being negatively affected by it. In this podcast, learn about some of the most important social signs that would indicate your daughter is ready to try social media. These include: Staying disconnected from drama: Does she do a good job of staying out of drama? Not get sucked into friend's squabbles? Not add to it? Does your daughter have a history of staying in balance and taking breaks from friends? Does she have friends in different groups she can hang with if one group becomes toxic? Handle conflicts directly and peacefully: Has she shown the courage and maturity to be able to confront friends, set boundaries, tell friends her needs and also listen to theirs to create win-win solutions? Does she understand the difference with being passive, aggressive, and assertive? Healthy friends: Mirror neurons in our brain causes individual choices to be powerfully shaped by what other people do, think, want, and what we think they want us to do. Girls are hard-wired to connect; being alone meant death starting back in dangerous, uncivilized times. Mirror neurons keep track of what other people are thinking, feeling, and doing. It can cause girls to constantly compare themselves to her peers or people in the media: Am I fitting in? Doing right thing? Doing anything that may get me thrown out? It's critical that she hangs with healthy friends because things like emotions and rule-breaking are contagious. Has she struggled to make or keep friends? Does she have a past history of being excluded or kicked out of her friend group? Experiences like that can cause your daughter to develop unhealthy decisions about herself: I'm not good enough, cool enough, pretty enough, I'm too annoying or awkward. These beliefs will make her vulnerable for not being herself, doing things and giving up parts of herself to fit in, having less courage to set boundaries, be at risk for being abused and used. Is she being bullied currently or in the past? No best friend or a group? This can make her more vulnerable to being a target without the protection of a group around her; does she have a history of victimization? Has she been a target? Listen to my recent podcast on cyberbullying published 1-12-23 Does she know how to be alone without being lonely? The crowd and social media distracts us from inward reflection; it's easy for girls to become plugged in constantly and outwardly focused. The girl who constantly texts and checks Instagram hasn't heard from herself in a long time. Devices and social media makes it hard to not be preoccupied with what's going on out there vs. within you; when alone, your thoughts and feelings are oriented inward; it's a slower and quieter experience. Has your daughter learned to cultivate, use, and enjoy quiet alone time? Summary: No middle school or high school girl is going to be perfect and always live out these qualities; they are a work in progress. Let her know what you will be looking for socially to let you know she's mature enough to handle what social media will throw at her. She'll earn the privilege to try social media once she has earned it. It's important to practice these social skills at home: conflict resolution, setting boundaries, not allow teasing to hurt her, learning about how to enjoy and have quiet alone time.

Summary: No matter what you say your priorities are, your daily routine shows your true priorities. And that's good news! Because that means you can create a daily routine that honors your priorities. And an added benefit of routines is that they reduce the amount of stress in your life and get the mundane (but still important) stuff on autopilot. Creating routines eliminates the inner mental battle of decision making. Whether you are new to leadership or have been a leader for decades, one thing is for sure, you will always experience challenges such as: The 1st challenge every leader experiences is the challenge of time constraints - everyone on this planet only has 24 hours to get the job done and we probably all needed that “thing” done yesterday. That includes billionaires like Mark Cuban and Warren Buffet, and CEO's like Tim Cook from Apple and Andy Jassy from Amazon. Whether it's a billionaire, CEO, or piddly little oh me…we all have 24 hours in day. A 2nd challenge every leader experiences is leading through the unknown - everyone goes through situations where they just don't have all the answers. It doesn't matter whether you're a first time parent not knowing how to care for a crying baby or a leader in a service-based industry trying to save people's jobs through a social distancing pandemic. Life is hard and curveballs are thrown all the time…all leaders are challenged with leading through the unknown. A 3rd challenge every leader experiences is conflict - everyone experiences conflict - whether it is conflict in a marriage, within their team, between their stakeholders, or with public opinion …. Every leader has to work to bring common goals and unity to the forefront to restore the relationship and move forward. Application: Even though all leaders face challenges we can walk with humble confidence in our leadership. Humility is not about thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less…humility is other people focused. And guess what…leadership is people focused. Now confidence is not the same thing as arrogance. Confidence is trust and belief in something and it can be found in multiple things. Like having confidence in God for provision and protection, confidence in the people you work with to come together in unity to solve a problem, and yes you can have confidence in yourself to do your job and lead. Here are 4 ways to build humble confidence as you lead through challenging situations: First, You must Have complete and total dependence on God. Second, you have to stop making everything about you. Third, you need to recognize that there is no perfect plan or checklist but that wisdom comes from God first, not man. Fourth, you need to know that almost all problems are mole hills, not mountains. Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
Many parents bring their young children to the synagogue, and often, young girls sit with their father in the men's section, or walk in and out during the prayer service. There are many parents who do not enforce upon their young daughters the accepted standards of Seniut (modesty), and the question thus arises as to whether men may pray in the presence of these young girls. Is it forbidden to pray in the presence of young girls who are not dressed according to accepted standards of Seniut, or is this permissible in light of the girls' young age?Hacham Ovadia Yosef addresses this question in a lengthy responsa in his work Yabia Omer (vol. 6, Orah Haim 14; listen to audio recording for precise citation). After citing and discussing the different opinions on the subject, the Hacham concludes that one may rely on the lenient view among the authorities and recite Shema, Amida, and the other prayers in the presence of young girls, even if they are not dressed according to proper standards of Seniut. He adds, however, that it is admirable to satisfy the stringent opinion by closing one's eyes or turning his eyes away as he prays. Thus, although young girls who come to the synagogue should certainly be dressed properly, if a girl who is not dressed according to proper standards is sitting next to her father, the men may continue praying, and if they want to follow the stringent view they should ensure not to look at her as they pray.It must be emphasized that this discussion relates only to young girls. Once a girl reaches the age of 12, she is considered an adult woman and may not enter the men's section of the synagogue during prayer services.Of course, all this assumes that the child sits quietly during the prayer service. The Shela Ha'kadosh (Rav Yeshaya Halevi Horowitz, 1558-1630) writes in Masechet Tamid (Perek Ner Misva; listen to audio recording for precise citation) that one who brings very young children to the synagogue "loses more than he gains." He adds that one who brings a young child to the synagogue must supervise the child and ensure that he stays in one place and does not run around the synagogue. There is no educational value whatsoever in bringing children to the synagogue if they run around, and a parent who brings a child to the synagogue must take responsibility to monitor the child and ensure that he acts in a manner that is appropriate for the synagogue.Summary: No child should be brought to the synagogue unless he sits quietly and respectfully. Girls who have reached the age of twelve may not enter the men's section of the synagogue during services. Young girls may sit with their fathers, and of course, they should be dressed respectfully. If a young girl who is not dressed modestly is in the men's section, the men are nevertheless allowed to pray in their presence.
Summary: No matter what the Fed does in the current economic state, the market seems to act like a palindrome. I have Jeff Clark on the podcast to discuss what exactly is happening in the markets, and how deficits are playing into this. We address gold and silver as well to break down how mining companies are functioning at the moment, and how to effectively invest in this sector. Tune in for more. Highlights: -The market seems to act like a palindrome, no matter what the Fed does -People in mining stocks had to show good performance in the market to their clients -We've never seen money printing at the extent of what it's at now -The deficits are going to be running trillions of dollars for years to come -In the past year, more money went into the stock market than in the last 20 years combined -There will be another leg up in gold and silver -The concern is that the next leg up could be bigger than is desired -Debt levels are higher than ever -The day for gold and silver is going to come—it's almost inevitable -We're living in a circumstance where the more speculative something is, the more value it has -Mid tier mining companies will probably get bought out by the minors -The attractive deposits out there are the ones you want to hold on to -Government policies are restricting supply while increasing demand Useful Links: Financial Survival Network TheGoldAdvisor on Twitter Silver Chartist Weekly Perspective: David Morgan Chats with Jeff Clark Silver's Coming Reversal Will Be Shocking – Mike Maloney & Jeff Clark
Summary: No matter what, you can always turn your life around and become the best version of yourself. I chat with Randy Gage—who has battled addiction and financial problems, and has ultimately done a 180. He emphasizes the value of mindset, and says that when you start viewing yourself as a victor rather than a victim, you can come to terms with what it is that you want to change in your life. Tune in for an inspiring message from Gage, and for tips on how you can take steps toward change. Highlights: -There is always a chance for you to turn your life around and be the best version of yourself -Randy Gage managed to turn his life around despite getting into a lot of trouble in his younger years -The break he needed was having someone believe in him more than he believed in himself—one of his friend's Father's helped him out -How do you make people believe in themselves and take advantage of a second chance? Summary: No man walks down the wedding aisle or holds his newborn child for the first time, planning to fail his family. We want to lead our homes well. This episode is the second in a 3-part series, Lessons for Men from the Arrival of the Messiah examines the man God chose to lead the home where his son, Jesus, was to grow up—Joseph of Nazareth—and what lessons we can learn from him about godly manhood. Summary: No man wants to fail at his mission to impact others for Christ. But we will, if we forget one of the commands of Peter that is a prerequisite for having such an impact—BE READY. Always be ready, writes Peter to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you (1 Pet 3:15).In other words, Peter commands every Christian to prepare ahead of time—that is what “ready” means. What are we to be prepare ourselves to do? Make a logical defense of our faith. That is what the Greek word, “defense” means. It is APOLOGIA. APO means from or since, LOGIA is the word from which we get logic. This episode helps us be prepared and prepare our loved ones to give a logical answer to a very common accusation that Christians hear: YOU CAN’T TAKE THE BIBLE LITERALLY. For Further Prayerful Thought: 1. What would you say to someone who says, “I think it tells spiritual truth, but the events it records are not always real historical events”?2. How would you answer the objection, “We don’t even really know what the original writers of the Bible really said. Bible translations disagree”?3. What is your biggest doubt about whether the Bible is really God’s Word? Welcome to Finance and Fury, The Say What Wednesday Edition Question from Mark part 2: Can you explain the repo markets that are going on at the moment? Apparently the banks are loaning money from the Feds at 10% so they have enough liquidity to survive the night/Bank run? Announcement – Last SWW ep for the year – Taking a break – Monday eps still going but no Wednesday or Friday episodes Repo market – Or repurchase market – What is it? And why are they done? What this says about the state of the economy A repurchase agreement (repo) is a form of short-term borrowing for dealers in government securities Agreement where one party sells Gov Bond they own for cash to another party – and promise to buy it back at a higher price in the near future – the inflated value is the repo rate Active participants in the domestic repo markets are those who deal in Gov Securities – include commercial banks, Central Banks, securities dealers Securities dealers - typically large domestic and international banks/investment managers that are market makers in domestic government securities – Investment funds and other non-dealer institutions are also providers of high-quality assets to dealers. These institutions typically use repos to manage their short-term funding while maintaining their exposure to these assets, and in some cases to enhance portfolio returns. Repo agreements are classified as a money-market instrument – as it functions the same as a short-term, collateral-backed, interest-bearing loan Buyer acts as a short-term lender, while the seller acts as a short-term borrower One party needs money – other party wants to make money It is a sale for cash – a sale of a certain type of fixed interest security The securities being sold are the collateral – Repurchase agreements are generally considered safe investments – but it does depend on the type of security sold Most agreements involve U.S. Treasury bonds – also Government Bonds - Central demand used to mainly be safe assets like these More recently – MBS, CDOs – assets that aren’t so safe In the case of bankruptcy, in most cases repo investors can sell their collateral – but not when the assets tank like 2008 Repurchase agreements have a maturity period called the "term" or the "tenor." - Repos with longer tenors are usually considered higher risk – due to the fact that the longer the tenor - the more factors can affect repurchaser creditworthiness, and interest rate fluctuations are more likely to have an impact on the value of the repurchased asset. It's similar to the factors that affect bond interest rates – went through last Weds The Significance of the Tenor - counterparty credit risk is the primary risk involved in repos i.e. creditor bears the risk that the debtor will be unable to repay the principal – securities as collateralized reduces the total risk – but not by 100% Specified maturity date (usually the following day or week) are term repurchase agreements - A dealer sells securities to a counterparty with the agreement that he will buy them back at a higher price on a specific date. The counterparty gets the use of the securities for the term of the transaction, and will earn interest stated as the difference between the initial sale price and the buyback price An open repurchase agreement (also known as on-demand repo) works the same way as a term repo except that the dealer and the counterparty agree to the transaction without setting the maturity date The trade can be terminated by either party by giving notice to the other party prior to an agreed-upon daily deadline - automatically rolls over each day and Interest is paid monthly Nearly all open agreements conclude within one or two years Repurchase agreements can take place between a variety of parties and reasons Example - The FED enters into repurchase agreements to regulate the money supply and bank for their reserves. The most common type is a third-party repo (also known as a tri-party repo) Repo Arrangement with a middle man - a clearing agent or bank conducts the transactions between the buyer and seller - constitute more than 90% of the repurchase agreement market Holds the securities and ensures that the seller receives cash at the onset of the agreement and that the buyer transfers funds and delivers the securities at maturation Two major clearing banks for tri-party repo - JPMorgan Chase and Bank of New York Mellon Facilitate the goals of both parties - secured funding and liquidity while the other makes a profit Example - a repo, a dealer sells government securities to investors, usually on an overnight basis, and buys them back the following day at a slightly higher price. That small difference in price is the implicit overnight interest rate. Repos are typically used to raise short-term capital. They are also a common tool of central bank open market operations. In your everyday life – say you don’t have any cash – you job is a delivery driver – but you are out of cash - need money to buy fuel as tank is empty – have a friend come over and buys your TV off you for $100 – and agree that after you finish work you will make $200 – buy TV back for $105 – if deal goes belly up well could sell TV for $100 – here the rate is 5% The Significance of the Repo Rate When central banks repurchase securities from private banks – it is done at a discounted rate, known as the repo rate Repo rates are set by central banks - allows control of the money supply within economies by increasing or decreasing available funds for the repo market – Also affects banks/funds decisions Decrease in repo rates encourages banks to sell securities back to the government in return for cash – which increases the money supply available to the general economy Increasing repo rates decreases the incentives - so central banks can effectively decrease the money supply by discouraging banks from reselling these securities To determine the true costs and benefits of a repurchase agreement - a buyer or seller must consider three different factors: Cash paid in the initial security sale and 2) the Cash to be paid in the repurchase of the security Also - The cash paid in the initial security sale and the cash paid in the repurchase will be dependent upon the value and type of security involved in the repo Third major factor - Implied rate for repo - If the rate is not favourable, a repo agreement may not be the most efficient way of gaining access to short-term cash But repurchase agreements offer better terms than money market cash lending agreements due to collateral Risks of Repo - Repurchase agreements are generally seen as credit-risk mitigated instruments The largest risk in a repo is that the seller may fail to hold up its end of the agreement by not repurchasing the securities The buyer of the security may then liquidate the security in order to attempt to recover the cash that it paid out initially Trouble is that the value of the security may have declined since the initial sale – hold and risk more loss, or take loss now There is a risk for the borrower in this transaction as well - value of the security rises above the agreed-upon terms, the creditor may not sell the security back and abandon agreement Upcoming Liquidity crisis - The Financial Crisis and the Repo Market Following the 2008 financial crisis - investors focused on a particular type of repo known as repo 105 Lots of speculation that these repos had played a part in Lehman Brothers’ attempts at hiding its declining financial health leading up to the crisis – where they were entering repo agreements to continue funding operations and to cover losses = created a lack of trust in the system – so the repo market dried up and contracted creating a liquidity squeeze for short term funding The crisis revealed problems with the repo market in general – bankrupt banks could continue to operate – putting other banks at risk of defaulting when the maturity of the repo occurs – There where and are major systemic risks The tri-party repo market’s reliance on the intraday credit which the clearing banks provide A lack of effective plans to help liquidate the collateral when a dealer defaults A shortage of viable risk management practices In late 2008 - regulators established new rules to address these risks – Mainly by putting increased pressure on banks to maintain their safest assets - such as Treasuries Incentivised to not lend them out through repo agreements Up through late 2008, the estimated value of global securities loaned in this fashion stood close to $4 trillion – then the figure dropped closer to $2 trillion. Further, the Fed has increasingly entered into repurchase (or reverse repurchase) agreements as a means of offsetting temporary swings in bank reserves This IMO created the lack of trust between the participants in repo markets – if Treasuries cant be used as securities – well it is MBS, CDOs and other risky assets up on the table – the very regulations meant to help the system just made it more dangerous due to risks of default and the assets as securities defaulting with it These changes are ineffective = there remain systemic risks to the repo space If a default by a major repo dealer occurs - might inspire a fire sale among money funds which could then negatively impact the broader market Talk about a shift toward a central clearinghouse system – with a new entity run by Central Bankers – But this was talked about 10 years ago with no real movements towards it – maybe after the next repo collapse Today – repo is back in full swing – showing signs of an upcoming liquidity crisis. It is as if the Fed’s injection into 23 Wall Street securities firms plus one foreign bank, in addition to buying up $60 billion a month in Treasury bills from Wall Street dealers, has never taken place. High yielding rates – when trust breaks down or when demand spikes – see spikes in repo rates – Around the end of quarters and Calendar year (USA especially) due to tax bills due Saw one in December last year but recently on the 17th September - This is when the Fed began its Repo loan interventions – because banks no longer trust banks This form of liquidity crisis is where the economic stresses start to occur due to a lack of money available to fund short term operations There are some similarities to the liquidity crisis of 1998 and 2008 – when the financial system stops trusting one another and those that need money to stay afloat – can’t find anyone to enter an agreement with them That is why we have seen some spikes in Repo markets around the world – Europe, China, USA – Reserve banks are the only ones being the purchaser in repo agreements – so see spikes when massive demands are present The repo markets operations are the signs that something isn’t right in the financial system – especially after the requirements for banks to hold more Treasury notes – have to sell off riskier assets at higher repo rates Summary - No surprise that something isn’t right in the financial system – the spikes in the repo rates are a sign of the liquidity crisis occurring – especially as most managers for investments are almost fully invested – not a lot of cash or reserves in place to fund their own operations without the repo market Thanks for listening, if you want to get in contact you can do so here: http://financeandfury.com.au/contact/

Summary: No, I am not talking about a new party that will rise up and put us back on the right path. I am not talking about taking over one of the lesser parties and having that one rise up and take over. I am talking about infiltrating each and every one of the existing parties, including Independents and Unaffiliateds, with a return to common goals, common sense, and a focus on what is best for America--not what is best for the individual politicians and their parties. For the next 10 minutes, we will unpack what this would mean to us individually and to our country. Transcript: No, I am not talking about a new party that will rise up and put us back on the right path. I don’t believe for a moment that we the people and our political parties are nearly as divided as the leaders, both in politics and in the media, want us to believe. The division we see and hear about every day is largely manufactured by the press and the parties. It is in their selfish best interest to create and widen the divisions that make them look good and their opposition look bad. And keep us focused on them, and not the issues that we all face. Let’s look at some of the most controversial issues and ask ourselves why we are seeing all the snarling, insults and accusations--and little, if any, progress. Ready?Immigration Reform. Stop with the wall/no wall shouting and posturing. Start with secure borders, including walls where engineers deem them the best solution, then build a path to legal residency for the 10M-20M who reside here illegally. This would include DACA, E-Verify and visa tracking. Yes, this would be amnesty, but with a secure border, the last one. And as we all know, repeat amnesties is another way of creating open borders. But this clear and workable solution would expose the people, on both sides, who want open borders, and are not yet ready to ‘fess up.Healthcare. Enough Single Payer yelling back and forth. Start with tort reform, and the ability to sell health insurance across state lines. Perhaps add some sort of drug price monitoring. Tort reform would greatly reduce the crippling medically-related legal fees--and most of Congress is comprised of lawyers. Social Security. When it was first enacted in 1940, the payoff age, 65, was 3 years past the then current life expectancy of 62 years; today it is 82 years. We could immediately fix Social Security by adjusting the payoff age by half of the increasing life expectancy. Not retroactively, but going forward. Social Security would then be solvent, and retirees would be getting far more than when it was first enacted. Seems like a win-win.Charter schools and school vouchers. The loudest voices want more money and have all the money go to public schools. Let’s tackle this issue with a look at what I believe should everyone’s goal. The best Pre K-12 education with the most efficient use of taxpayer dollars. Test every solution against that goal. Are the voices demanding that all the money go to public schools willing to have this as a goal? The list goes on and on; even the most controversial issues can be reduced to common goals, and a path to reach them. All of these--I believe obvious--solutions have two major flaws:1. The leaders in the media and the political parties would have no idea what to say in front of a camera if they could not accuse “others” of being anti-American, borderline criminal, dishonest or robots doing the bidding of evil organizations like the NRA or Planned Pare...

Sure, a lot of you starting now have some smarts, a good job, and are willing to work hard. All that sets you in the right direction, but over the long-term, over a multi-decade career that simply will not be enough to be truly successful. My 7 Key Success Factors for Business Networking There are two areas I want to review about networking: what makes it successful and how to actually do it! So, let’s review my seven key principles for how to do it successfully and then a five step plan of attack to execute those principles. It’s an all-the-time thing. You need to do it all the time. If you only do it when you need it, you're not going to be successful. If you need to network, it's already too late if you don't already have a healthy one. Be very, very consistent. Give value first. Take second. Give value first to others before you ask for something. It could be anything. But whatever value you provide—your time, energy, education, favors—give it first. Give more than you take. Put more into the networking bank. Keep making deposits before you make withdrawals. Do it live. This is not an email thing. This is human interaction. This is building deeper relationships. This is spending time with people. Do what you say you’re going to do—build trust. Always follow through. Whether you’re providing information, making a referral, etc. You want to be known for having a good “word,” being trustworthy, and being dependable. Move it forward and expand their network. If the interaction between you and me dies with you, you haven't helped me build my network. So, you want to make sure you're thinking how can I help expand this person's network? Who might be good for him or her to know? You want to pay it forward, you want to move it forward, and you want to expand their network. The point is for both of you to grow your networks. Build a systematic plan that allows you to execute. You need to build a plan that makes you consistent, organized, and working toward building a healthy network that meets your goal and the goals of others. My 5-Step Plan to Build a Healthy Professional Network This plan has served me well for multiple decades. It’s also helped me build and keep and extremely healthy network. This process works A. Set your networking goals. The first place to start is to set your goals. Don’t just start dialing up people and emailing them. That isn't going to get you where you need to be. You have to have a goal. And what do I mean by goals? There are many, but let’s talk about four: Educations and advancement of your knowledge Camaraderie Job hunting Grow customers, partnerships, etc. B. Build your relationship map by doing your research. Who do you know who can move you toward your goals? Who do they know? Who do you want to know? Who might know them? Build a relationship map. Literally build one. It could be a list of people, could be a diagram, or whatever it is that you want to do. C. Identify 60 to 100 people you can connect with who can help you meet your goals. Build a nice list of individuals. Spend an hour or so each month identifying the right people for you to connect with and contact. Do your homework. Be aggressive. D. Prepare standard messages you can modify. Draft 3-4 templates you can use to contact people and they tailor each one (in the next step) based on your relationship with them. E. “E” is for execute. Execute a consistent reach out program. For me, I contact five people at the beginning of each month. I go through my list of people and my relationship map. I identify 5-6 people I’d like to contact. I either call them or email them to see if they want to get together (phone, coffee, lunch, dinner, etc.). Give them a week to get back to you. If some don’t, start contacting others and so on and so forth. Five people might not sound like a lot, but keep in mind you want to actually get together or speak with them. This is about spending time! Adjust your plan according. The point isn’t to do it exactly as I’ve laid it out. The point is to tailor this or some plan to accommodate your needs. Feel free to adjust accordingly based on your goals. Most importantly, have fun and be generous! If you enjoyed this video, give me a LIKE, COMMENT, and, of course SHARE with your friends.
