The Passion Test by Janet Attwood & Chris Attwood We'll be speaking about a subject we are both passionate about: identifying your most important passion and how to pursue it.
Summary No guest today in what is my first episode of the new year. I promise no New Year's resolutions except one: to read and digest as many books as I can during the year. Given my interest in books, I was curious to know what some of my colleagues, friends, and family members will read in 2024. So, I contacted more than 40 of them, asking them for a brief bio, their book of choice, and why that title might find its way to their nightstand. I thought that maybe I'd hear from a few, but that many might be too busy to respond, given the fast-approaching holiday. Their responses poured in: Jesse Kohler is the President and Chair of The Change Campaign and also serves as Executive Director of the Campaign for Trauma-Informed Policy and Practice. Going to read Preventing and Healing Climate Traumas: A Guide to Building Resilience and Hope in Communities by Bob Doppelt. Because the climate crisis is widely traumatizing. Promoting support across our society to work through it together is one of the most critical callings of our time. Paul McNicholls is a lay historian and author. Going to read Victory to Defeat: The British Army 1918–40 by Richard Dannatt and Robert Lyman. Because what happened to the British Army between the First and Second World Wars explains why they were summarily defeated by the Germans and had to be evacuated from the beaches at Dunkirk in 1940. Frank Zaccari is a best-selling author and CEO of Life Altering Events, LLC. Going to read The Passion Test by Janet and Chris Attwood. Because over my long time on the planet, my passion – or what I thought was my passion – has changed many times. Now, in my semi-retirement, this book will help me focus on finding my next passion where I can make a difference. Neil C. Hughes is a freelance technology journalist, podcast host and engineer, and the producer of "Tech Talks Daily" and "Tech Fusion" by Citrix Ready. Going to read Freedom to Think: Protecting a Fundamental Human Right in the Digital Age by Susie Alegr. Because this title will deepen my understanding of the intersection between technology, privacy, and human rights in the digital age. Melissa Hughes, Ph.D. is a neuroscience researcher, speaker, and author of Happy Hour with Einstein and Happier Hour with Einstein: Another Round. Going to read Misbelief by Dan Ariely. Because the human brain is so incredible and so incredibly flawed (and because I read everything that Dan Ariely writes!) And Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things by Adam Grant. Because we all have hidden potential begging to be discovered. Valerie Gordon is a former Emmy-winning television producer who brings the Art of Storytelling for Impact and Influence to audiences and corporate leaders. Going to read Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things by Adam Grant. Because I found his previous works to be insightful and helpful in my business as well as in meeting my own goals. I recommend it to anyone interested in the human mind and its impact on realizing our potential. Rich Gassen is a print production manager at UW-Madison and also leads a community of practice for supervisors where we explore topics on leadership and staff development. Going to read Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things by Adam Grant. Because I have always sought to improve myself and those around me to achieve more through better processes, incorporating efficiencies, and harnessing strengths. I feel that this book will bring me to another level in being able to do that. Sarah Elkins is a StrengthFinder coach and story consultant, keynote speaker, podcast host, and the author of Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will. Going to read Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson. Because I've become especially sensitive to representation over the past few years, and I talk about wanting to support all people. Reading a book by a person of color and understanding her back story is one way to help me do that. Diane Wyzga is a global podcaster, a story expert who helps clients clarify ideas and amplify messaging, and a hiker – who walks the talk. Going to read The Perfection Trap - Embracing the Power of Good Enough by Thomas Curran. Because as I've become aware of our culture's dangerous obsession with perfection, I want to learn to step away from my own focus on it. Bill Whiteside is a retired software salesman who is now writing a book about Winston Churchill and a little-known event from World War II. Going to read Larry McMurtry: A Life by Tracy Daugherty. Because after spending the past five years researching my book with my nose in books about Britain and France in 1940, it's going to be refreshing to read just for fun once again. McMurtry's personality and career as a bookstore owner and a highly regarded author – “Lonesome Dove," “The Last Picture Show” and “Terms of Endearment” – fascinate me. Mark Reid is a maker of traditional handmade Japanese paper and host of the Zen Sammich podcast. Going to read The Moon and Sixpence by W. Somerset Maugham. Because the main character's internal moral challenges and the battle with societal expectations are compelling for me to read about and contemplate. Mark O'Brien is the founder and principal of O'Brien Communications Group, a B2B brand-management and marketing-communications firm, and host of The Anxious Voyage, a syndicated radio show about life's trials and triumphs. Going to read Lyrical and Critical Essays by Albert Camus. Because as a longtime fan of Camus' existential work, I look forward to stretching my thick Irish noggin to let in a tad more light – as I always try to do. Hope Blecher is an educational consultant and the founder of Hope's Compass, www.HopesCompass.org, a non-profit that helps members of the community and visitors to interact with survivors of the Holocaust and children of survivors through arts, music, poetry, prose, and more. Going to (re)read The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exuperty. Because I experience something new each time I read it. And Art Matters: Because Your Imagination Can Change the World by Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell. Because I'm curious about what these authors will say that will help me continue on my own pathway of exploring art. Christine Mason is the Cultivating Resilience podcast co-host, educational psychologist researcher, entrepreneur, and yoga instructor/mindfulness coach. Going to read From Beirut to Jerusalem by Thomas L. Friedman. Because Friedman knows the region exceptionally well, this book will provide me with a greater understanding of the underlying regional and religious tensions and conflicts and also prepare me to lead others in a deeper discussion toward a potential resolution and peace. Tammy Hader is a retired accountant, a lifetime Kansan, a storyteller, a caregiver, and an author. (See above.) Going to read Bowling Alone by Robert Putnam. Because our relationships – our social capital – continue to be degraded in the current environment, so I want to study it, defend against it, and learn how to shift myself and my community into improved connections. Cindy House is the author of Mother Noise, a memoir about her recovery from addiction. She is a regular opener for David Sedaris on his book lecture circuit. She is also my memoir instructor. Going to read Art Monster: Unruly Bodies in Feminist Art by Lauren Elkin. Because the book looks at women artists and their work as a reaction against the patriarchy. In these days of watching the GOP war against women, it seems especially important as a woman in the arts to consider how my work can be a protest against extreme political positions. Susan Rooks – the Grammar Goddess – is an editor/proofreader who helps nonfiction/business content authors of books/blogs/websites and podcasters and their episode transcriptions look and sound as smart as they are. Going to read Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia, MD. Because as I age, I'm interested in doing everything I can to stay alive in a healthy manner. Steve Ehrlich is a lifelong educator and has an equally long-standing calling in fly fishing. He combines those two loves in classes on the lessons of fly fishing and its treasured literature for personal and professional growth, renewal and healing, and social change. Going to read An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us by Ed Yong. Because I've always been intrigued by the interconnectedness of things, especially the things we can't fully understand. Such a mystery is at the heart of this book, which is about how animals are connected to one another in so many ways and in a manner that most of us have difficulty comprehending. Annette Taylor is a rogue researcher of evolutionary psychology. Going to finish We Are Electric by Sally Adee – but doing so scares me... Because it seems like the author is justifying our “merging” with AI or at least romanticizing our ever increasing entanglements with technology. And since I like to simplify life using a cave-dweller perspective, this idea freaks me out. Leon Ikler is a commercial photographer primarily shooting tabletop and small room scenes in the studio along with a mix of location work. Going to read Democracy Awakening by Heather Cox Richardson. Because in these contentious times with the nation so divided, I like how she frames today's issues against what has taken place in the past. I feel it is essential to know our history so we can try to avoid making the same mistakes again. Rita Grant is a former award-winning video producer. Going to reread The United States of Arugula by David Kamp. Because it's a great reminder of how our current American culinary landscape was created. I'm ending with Rita because she also sent in another suggestion. Not a book, but a song – "You Can't Take That Away From Me," sung by the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald. As Rita noted, "The lyrics will stand the test of time. They're a testament to what we hold in our hearts and imagination that can never be taken from us."

Today, I have the good fortune to chat with a fabuous guest, Karin Lubin. While there is so much that Karin and I can focus on in today's chat, we connected due to my interest in the book, THE PASSION TEST, by Janet Attwood and Chris Attwood and we'll start by delving into how THE PASSION TEST can lead you to a more fulfilling life - actually a life that embodies the very core values that Karin espouses in her work: connection, wisdom, integrity, leadership, and of course my personal favorites: adventure and fun. But first, a little bit about Karin: Born in NYC, Karin was raised by her Norwegian mother who fought in the Resistence Movement against Hitler and her Jewish father, who was born and bred in Queens. A powerful combination. Karin currently characterizes her work as that of a Transformational Trainer, Journal Creator and Wisdom Healer. This description however doesn't truly reveal her broad business background. Having received a PhD in education, her business leadership roles have included that of a Public School Education Administrator for a period of 15 years and the Global Director of The Passion Test Facilitator Programs (essentially training the trainer), a role that she has held for over 30 years. Her real-life experiences working with teams in both the public and private sectors have given her a unique vantage point for the work she is currently focused on: creating teams based on the concept of INTUITIVE LEADERSHIP - of course, a systematic approach inherently yields results and Karin's approach does just that - she has proven that creating invincible, synergistic and empowered teams is not difficult, you just have to have an open mind, be willing to dispel limiting beliefs, and of course, be schooled in the tools required for a green light. Karin is also a journal creator of two series of wisdom journals, one focusing on the seasons using self-help themes, and another on Internal Family Systems and the 8 characteristics of Self. As in her work with Intuitive Leadership, Karin brings her core values to all of her teachings and programs: connection, wisdom, integrity, leadership, and again my personal favorites: adventure and fun. David Wood is a personal and business coach. David left his cushy Park Avenue job 20 years ago to explore both the outer world and his own inner world. At the individual level, he helps high performing entrepreneurs, executives, and leaders to Play for Real – in their own growth, in their relationships, and at work. By integrating three main principles of Real Truth, Real Daring, and Real Caring. At the corporate level, he helps companies to improve performance and retention. He has consulted Fortune 100 companies – such as Sony Music, Proctor & Gamble, and Exxon. He was recently voted into the Transformational Leadership Council, along with such thought leaders as Stephen M.R. Covey, Jack Canfield, John Gray, and Marianne Williamson. In this interview we get real honest, in fact, David reveals something he has never shared on a podcast before — The real question is….what will “Play for Real” mean to you? I’ve been coaching for over 10 years, and when I first started coaching your website came up a lot. You were owning the life coaching scene. There was a point where David was the top 3 results on the search engine. He was fully committed to coaching. After becoming burnt out, David retired, but he is now back on the coaching scene with renewed passion. You have figured out how to do something most people dream about, which is living an abundant life, making a huge contribution, and having a blast every step of the way. What is your secret to success? David is very self-directed. He creates a vision he can be excited about, and then he uses hacks to create productive days so he can do what needs to be done to fulfill his vision. It can be hard to carry out consistent action in the face of no results. For people who can’t do that, a simple hack is getting yourself a coach. David considers himself a possibility generating machine. Other people assume that something can’t be done. If David is told that something can’t be done, he will go out there and do it. What are some of those hacks? How do you get yourself in the right state if you aren’t feeling it? He has had a lot of depression and anxiety in his life, which can be several weeks of darkness but can also manifest as not wanting to send an email or do anything at all that day. But his job requires that he does stuff to bring in revenue. One hack is caffeine (although he restricts himself to one cup of coffee and one cup of tea a day). Once a week he takes adderall which enables him to get a solid 8 hours to work done. He likes to do morning pages which are supposed to be 3 pages of stream of consciousness writing and never read it. But David likes to use it to uncover the things he wants to do. Some of those hacks are things that people often try to steer us away from, such as caffeine and other stimulants. Particularly in the self-development field. Thanks for sharing that. David used to think that all medication was bad. It is worth being wary about medication as humans have a tenuous relationship with addiction. If you like coffee, you’ll probably drink more of it and run into problems because you are abusing it. David went from thinking all medication was bad to taking antidepressants. The turning point came when he was talking to a colleague who took Welbutin and asked her why she took it since she was into personal growth. She told him that she likes herself better when she’s on it. So he got off his high horse. He tries to be careful with how he takes medication by doing research and mixing things up to avoid tolerance. Is that part of the caring element you were talking about? David believes in 3 core pillars – Truth, Daring and Caring. He acknowledges that caring isn’t the sexy part. David had a breakdown. He would be unable to sleep because adrenaline was shooting through his boy. A doctor friend told him to go on medication, but he refused because he wanted to heal it naturally. David had reached rock bottom and realized that there is a time and a place for daring, but if you don’t acknowledge your limitations and nurture other areas, things will fall apart. He realised he needed to add the 3rd pillar of Caring. You had all this success. Then you had these breakdowns. Would you agree that in many ways breakdowns can actually become the catalyst to success? Recently, David heard someone say - “Your core wounds can become your greatest gifts.” Many of the people in the coaching community have some kind of wound or past trauma they have had to overcome. If David hadn’t had the breakdowns or experienced childhood trauma, he wouldn’t be on this path. When he was 7 he watched his 5year old sister get killed in a traffic accident. He learnt how to shut down his emotions and not feel anything. This is when he started to be solution-focused. In his 20s he went to a psychiatrist who helped him to realize that he hadn’t grieved. He has now spent the last 25 years reconnecting to his emotions and learning how to feel. He now gets to bring that to other people who are system and task-oriented but would like to have deeper connections with themselves, their partner, their kids, and all the other people in their life. How do you understand yourself so you can find those gifts that allow you to get paid for who you are? David used to teach people how to be a coach. Then people asked him how he was able to travel and coach all over the world. So he wrote the book Get Paid For Who You Are. Now he’s interested in how do you love your life. He wants people to be able to be on their deathbeds and have no regrets. Part of how you do that is to have fulfilling and gratifying work. How do you find your gifts? There isn’t a magic answer. When David started coaching, it happened organically, but then he stopped. Recently a friend suggested that he get back into it and he realized how much he loves it. Then within coaching, he has found the core themes which light him us - Truth, Daring, Caring and Connection. The short answer is to read the book The Passion Test and get yourself a coach. I like how you say it takes time. Sometimes we don’t respect the process. You have to take action. Even if you don’t know if it’s the right action. How do you view the coaching industry at this point in time? David is fascinated by the state of corporate coaching today. The role of coaches is now accepted in the corporate world. What are some of your favorite coaching questions? What question would you most like to be asked right now? What coaching would you give yourself on this? You have an app right? David has an app called Get Real. I found this question on there. If you had to make one rule which everyone must follow, what would it be? That you must speak the truth all the time with the exception that if you lie you must preface it by saying I’m going to lie to you right now. So many people are lying to themselves as well as to others. It’s so toxic because people are afraid to say the truth. It takes a lot of guts to tell the truth. What if they don’t like who I am because of something I said? What if I don’t get a promotion because of saying that? It can be transformative to share your inner dialogue. It can take a lot of courage. One of the greatest hacks you can play on yourself is to tell on yourself. Tell someone your inner thoughts and dialogue. Do you have a question that you repeatedly ask your self? What did you get done today? David finds it useful to acknowledge what he achieved in order to appreciate himself. What is one thing you would love to do before you die? David wants to play drums in a band for one public gig. He has done it as a guitarist and now wants to experience it as a drummer. How can we get in touch with you? When there is a sense of purpose in our lives, we feel joy. • How do we respond to the times when there are challenges and obstacles? This is the time to draw back an accept this. Transformational teacher and empowerment expert, Jody Swift, talks with Yeukai about the many aspects of transformation, especially for individuals who are planning on or are in the process of building their own business. Key Questions Asked: How does Jody work with business owners today? What would be her advice to business owners to get themselves back on the track? How can business owners engage in becoming aware of themselves? Is there anything that people are doing which they think are having a positive impact yet, in reality, they are not making a good impact at all when it comes to reaching their goals as business owners? How did Jody get her first client? How does she market her business today? How does Jody go about picking the right people to work with? Highlights of Lessons Learned: Jody’s Journey Jody helps people who are challenged of being two people to figure out their why from the beginning. Once you figure out what your love languages are and what drives you, you can figure out whether or not they are being fulfilled in your workplace. People stay where they are when they are being rewarded in some way. Jody recommends two pieces of literature for business owners to pick up: The ‘5 Love Languages’ by Gary Chapman and ‘The Passion Test’ by Chris Attwood and Janet Attwood. So many times we’re waiting to talk, we’re not actually listening to what somebody has to say… Being able to communicate where we’re at with whomever we’re with makes a big difference in terms of the success of that communication piece. Becoming Aware Business owners can get so wrapped up in the how we forget about the initial intention of looking for what they want to get out of the business. When she’s doing goal setting with her clients, Jody suggests that they rid themselves of the burden of the how because it will come if you focus on the end result. Jody markets her business mainly through word of mouth, Facebook and other social media platforms, and sending a newsletter to the people she meets. Expert’s Advice Jody believes in the power of attraction. When it comes to people to work with, she is looking for particular personality types – the really open-minded people who see possibility in a number of different things. Jody advises business owners to form their tribe. Get clear on your vision and then form your tribe, find the people who believe in you and who believe in your vision, and the rest will come. Another advice Jody gives to people is to continue to educate yourself on you – not just on business but on you, and how you tick.

Aired Thursday, 13 July 2017, 7:00 PM ET The Global Transition - What Do We Have to Look Forward to? with Chris Attwood We are living in an era of unprecedented change with a number of major crises converging…. From climate change, to economic and political instability to the erosion of entire communities & displacement of over 6 million people due to violence and religious wars, the world today’s children are being raised in bears little resemblance to the world that we and our parents grew up in, and it seems that every day the media regales us with more shocking evidence of this. Successful people have all something in common. They have rituals. Today in Fabiola SHARE, Chris Attwood, author of Your Hidden Riches, will inspire you to find rituals that can lighten up your world.
Most people go through life sleepwalking—they do the same routine every day, devoid of meaning or purpose, and without even realizing it. The simple way to end this cycle, according to Janet Bray-Attwood and Chris Attwood, authors of the New York Times best-seller The Passion Test, is by embracing your hidden riches. Hidden riches refer to the unique life design that is inside everyone. The key to discovering these riches is to harness the power of rituals. In their new book, YOUR HIDDEN RICHES: Unleashing the Power of Ritual to Create a Life of Meaning and Purpose (Harmony Books, October 21, 2014), Janet, Chris, and their coauthor, Sylva Dvorak, Ph.D., explain how readers can use the power of rituals to discover their unique life design, and unlock the treasury where their hidden riches lie.

Success is a habit. We all have the ability to direct our attention towards what it is we want to generate and create in our lives—most people simply don't know that success is a by-product of deliberate intention and focused attention. Most people go through life sleepwalking — they do the same routine every day devoid of meaning or purpose ... and without even realizing it. The simple way to end this cycle, according to Julie Ann's ConsciousSHIFT guest Chris Attwood, co-author with his wife Janet Attwood and Sylvia Dvorak,of YOUR HIDDEN RICHES: Unleashing the Power of Ritual to Create a Life of Meaning and Purpose (and the NY Times bestseller, The Passion Test), is by embracing your hidden riches. So, what are your hidden riches? Hidden riches refer to the unique life design that is inside everyone. Chris says the key to discovering these riches is to harness the power of RITUALS,and unlock the treasury where your hidden riches lie. Successful people in every area use rituals, but most don’t talk about them because they’re very personal. Sports stars use rituals to perform at their best. Musicians and artists use them to spark their creativity. Business leaders use them to create cohesive teams and build a company culture. Celebrities use them to maintain a balance between their personal and public lives.Rituals are simply tools, and because tools can be used for good purposes or bad, ‘ritual’ can have a negative connotation. Chris will share that not only can rituals be fun and meaningful, but they’re a time-tested way to manage your time, your energy and your thinking in this fast-paced, sometimes crazy modern world we live in.Rituals can serve us for better Relationships ...Diet, Health, and Beauty ... Creating Wealth ...Seasons of Life ... a Closer Family Circle ...and much more.By structuring conscious, intentional rituals into your life, you ensure your life has balance. You focus on what’s truly meaningful and you create deeper connections with the most important people in your life.Join Julie Ann and Chris to explore how we can reignite the power of personal and community rituals - to sustain us in the midst of an ever-increasing onslaught of information and complexity, and to sustain our world by reawakening the awareness of our interconnection with all life.
