Well worth picking up if you're within range of the store. We enjoy a pour while discussing the 1968 Sergio Corbucci winter western, "The Great Silence" starring Klaus Kinski and Jean-Louis Trintignant. We both just saw this movie for the first time and have differing opinions but I can say I really enjoyed it and think everyone should see it. A happy and healthy 2022 to all of you Fabulous Film Loving Friends out there! We're ringing in the New Year by pandering to the masses and discussing the latest and biggest Marvel blockbuster to date, 2021's Spider-Man No Way Home, directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland as everyone's favorite wisecracking wallcrawler. Joining me today are two of the stalwart members of Disney/Marvel's key demographic, my 11 year old nephew Raphael and my son Marco. And serving in the role of the exasperated, disheartened chaperone, my sister Roseanne Caputi. Before we dive in: the synopsis! The 8th solo live action Spider-Man movie but the third film in a recent trilogy which picks up exactly where the previous film, Spider Man Far From Home left off, Spider-Man No Way Home finds its teenaged hero Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, framed for the murder of his enemy Mysterio, while at the same time, having his secret identity as Spider-Man revealed to the entire world via a prerecorded and heavily edited video sent by Mysterio before his death. With much of the world believing Mysterio to be a hero, Peter is thrust into the position of having to clear his name legally and endure the hostility of John Q. Public. This, in turn, causes not only his college application to M.I.T. to be denied but also the applications of Pete's girlfriend M.J. and best friend Ned Leeds as well. Believing his life and that of those around him to be ruined, Peter solicits the help of Dr. Stephen Strange, a fellow superhero and sometime teammate on the super team known as the Avengers. Strange is the Master of The Mystic Arts and Pete asks him to create a spell that will make the entire world forget that he is Spider-Man. Dr. Strange agrees reluctantly, but the spell goes awry due to Peter's interference in its incantation and instead of making everyone forget Spider-Man's secret identity, the spell opens a portal to comic book gobbledygook known as the multiverse, where all the villains in the various dimensions (i.e. different movie series with Spider-Man) who know that Peter Parker is Spider-Man start to appear. This villainous roster includes Dr. Octopus, The Green Goblin and Sandman from the first Sam Raimi directed trilogy, and Electro and The Lizard from the second film series directed by Marc Webb. Dr. Strange has the ability to send the villains back to the universes in which they belong, but upon hearing that most of those villains will die battling Spider-Man, Peter disobeys and disables Strange and sets upon a mission to cure the villains of their evil ways. This plan, of course, backfires terribly and Pete is beset by unimaginable tragedy and a sense of utter hopelessness but Ned and MJ, in trying to locate Peter through a magic ring, call upon other figures from the multiverse who arrive to help Peter see the truth about the purpose of Spider-Man and to save the day. And that, my friends, is NOT a simple plot synopsis but I think it's as clear cut and fathomable as I can make it. What's it all mean? Is it any good? Find out! WARNING: this podcast reveals MASSIVE SPOILERS!!

The latest MCU series felt like a film told in six instalments. Soaring action, powerful themes, exotic locations, old allies and new foes... it's been a thrill ride. We've had a week to recover from the finale of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, with its battles and character reveals. So what did we think of it overall? The six-episode Marvel series ran weekly on Disney+ and took us on a fraught journey across a world dealing with the outcomes of Avengers: Endgame. In many respects, it's an origin story for our new Captain America. With some familiar faces from the films and new villains in the form of the Flag Smashers, it tackled issues of race, identity, history, propaganda, personal trauma, guilt, justice and politics. And it delivered the kind of aerial fight scenes more usually witnessed on the big screen. With superhero fans still buzzing about it, it's time to take a break from our regular podcast format and discuss the adventures of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes in depth. Did we love the series as much as WandaVision? What stories touched us most? Where does the Marvel universe go from here? All this and more, in about 40 minutes of informal chat. Be warned, this episode contains whopping spoilers for the Marvel and Disney+ original series. We assume you’ve seen every episode, and are aware of all the twists. You must only listen to this recording if you're up to date. Seriously, if you haven’t watched to the end, stay away until you've caught up. Episode 35 - Kathrine Bigelow This episode features the perkiest introduction ever. Possibly because it's Mitch rockin' the mike, but things snap back to reality very quickly as Mondy compares himself to Jesus. Just another day at a recording of Shooting the Poo... This episode sees the boys discussing the career of Kathryn Bigelow, along with frequent tangents onto whatever subjects take their fancy. The films that are MASSIVELY SPOILED (seriously, watch them if you're remotely interested in any of their plot twists) are The Loveless, Blue Steel, Strange Days and The Hurt Locker. Dave cruelly denied Mitch the chance to rewatch Near Dark and Point Break, although inevitably these get a mention as well. You just can't keep Keanu Reeves' finest performance down. The conversation quickly devolves into Mondy's most racist and sexist ever, which is quite some achievement. He also describes a bar shooting as "*very* moderate" and contends that Citizen Kane's major cinematic innovation was "lowering the ground". Dave has a theory - have you noticed he always has one of those? - about how to make Hollywood pay attention to angry audience members, and seems oddly preoccupied with Mimi Leder for some reason. Meanwhile Mitch reaches peak happiness when Mondy uses the words "police academy" in passing and then begins humming the theme tune to the eponymous movie. Mondy immediately joins in. For a moment there it was like being in a recording studio with Pavlov's dogs. As usual, there is a lot of swearing, puerile themes and did I mention the MASSIVE SPOILERS? You have been warned. The Voyager Movie. The Original Series had its movies, and TNG was followed by some great features of its own. Loyal fans of Voyager demand equal treatment! We don’t require much—maybe a movie that deals with snippets from each of the post-Voyager novels and rewrites “Endgame”? Perhaps a sci-fi thriller pitting the Voyager crew against an unstoppable villan? Or simply a trip back to the Mirror Universe of “Living Witness” bringing the evil Voyager head-to-head with Prime Uni Voyager? In this episode of To The Journey, Charlynn, Lorrie, and Tristan share their ideas for the perfect Voyager movie. What are yours? NOTE: This episode contains MASSIVE SPOILERS for the Voyager relaunch novel series.
The Writer and the Critic elects to stay at home and rest its feet this month as your hosts, Kirstyn McDermott and Ian Mond, give you a rundown on the recently announced ballots for the Ditmar and Chronos Awards. Ian grabs a shovel ad promptly digs himself a Ditmar-shaped hole. Kirstyn highlights the emergence of the podcast as a dominant form of "fan publication" on both ballots. They then discuss gender bias in The Periodic Table of Storytelling (which is based on the TV Tropes wiki) -- not to mention gender bias on Ian's hoodie! -- as well as a related blog post by Ann Leckie. Ian laments the likely closure of Salon Futura but hopes Wizard's Tower Press (and its fine online book store) will continue. Kirstyn still refuses to buy an iPad. Above/Below by Stephanie Campisi and Ben Peek is a listener-recommended title which is comprised of two linked novellas published as a single "flip-style" book. There are very few spoilers in this review but if you haven't read the book and wish to skip ahead, the discussion begins at 39:30 and ends around 54:15. The official podcast books are The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz (chosen by Ian) and Liar by Justine Larbalestier (recommended by Kirstyn). Be warned: both these discussions contains MASSIVE SPOILERS!! They begin at 54:15 for Oscar Wao and 1:20:20 for Liar. If you haven't already read the books, you may want to come back later when you have. Especially when it coms to Liar. Kirstyn and Ian are very serious about that. Look how sternly their fingers are wagging! To hear a final wrap-up, brief mention of feedback, and some very exciting podcasty news, listen in from 1:39:00. For the next episode, Ian has chosen The Resurrectionst by Jack O'Connell while Kirstyn has picked Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. In addition, they will be discussing the new split-novel/duology, Black Out and All Clear by Connie Willis, which was recommended by a listener. Whew, that's a whole bunch of words to get through! *** The Writer and the Critic adopts a book club approach to its discussion and will assume its listeners have either read the books in question or don't care if they find out that it was all but a dream in the end. There will almost certainly be spoilers, so you are encouraged to read the chosen titles ahead of time. It'll be much more fun that way and Ian and Kirstyn won't get near as many death threats! ***
