It was a candid exchange between two of the US's most prominent adversaries. As he capped off his three-day visit to Moscow, Chinese President Xi Jinping hinted to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, that both are now shaping a new world order. Xi was on his first visit to Moscow since Russia launched its attack on Ukraine last year. Just days before, Vladimir Putin was issued with an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court - and the Russian leader was looking for some diplomatic support from his biggest trade partner and strategic ally. Beijing and Moscow have long opposed the US and its Western-led institutions. Together, they've been critical of NATO's expansion and global sanctions on Russian energy companies and Chinese tech firms. The two countries also lead a series of regional blocs that have offered alternatives to the Western-led order including a group of leading emerging economies known as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. Guests: Einar Tangen Senior Fellow at Taihe Institute Mark Meirowitz Professor at SUNY Maritime College
Right after the February 6 quakes struck, dozens of countries mobilized to provide both search and rescue teams, and crucial aid supplies. Türkiye's disaster management agency says that more than 9,000 international workers participated in post-quake operations, and that nearly 100 countries offered assistance. Many that were the first to provide aid, were both long time allies, and countries that Ankara saw a year of tense relations. Guests: Ibrahim Ozer Turkish Red Crescent Tudor Onea Associate Professor at Bilkent University Mark Meirowitz Professor at SUNY Maritime College
Six world powers are sitting down with Iran in Vienna in hopes of salvaging a nuclear deal first agreed upon in 2015, but was later scrapped by former US President Donald Trump in 2018. After a five-month break, Iran has a new hardline government that wants to add more to the agreement. But the country's continued enrichment and stockpiling of uranium has been a cause of concern for Israel and the US. Can Washington and Tehran reach a lasting agreement? Guests: Abdel Bari Atwan Editor-in-chief of Rai al Youm Mark Meirowitz Professor at SUNY Maritime College

I wonder what percentage of neo-liberals listening to this show have no idea what “Let's go Brandon” means Dbach? $100 invested in Bitcoin in 2009 would be worth $62 myn today. The market cap of Bitcoin is $1 tyn. Several years ago, on this show David, I dismissed crypto currencies because I didn't understand them, and because I was (and am not now) allowed to buy them for my clients. Clearly, I was wrong about crypto's. BUT this is NOT a solicitation to buy or sell Bitcoin or any other crypto currency. A guy named Preston Cooper analyzed 30,000 different bachelor's degree programs for return on investment. He found that 28% of those degrees have a net negative return. He also found that programs in engineering, computer science, economics and nursing all yield a high return on investment, increasing their students' net lifetime earnings by $500,000. But, a majority of degrees in art, music, philosophy and psychology leave their AVERAGE students worse off financially. One of the nation's highest-return programs is the computer-science major at Harvard University. This degree has an expected value of more than $3 million. But attending the nation's most elite school is no guarantee of financial security. Harvard's ethnic and gender studies program leaves its students worse off by around $47,000 on average, according to my estimates. My school, SUNY Maritime College, offers the highest mid-career earnings which is to say that 10 yrs after graduation, the avg graduate earns some $175,000/yr. But…it's a military school, so it is not for everyone. explain to me what the party that created Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and Obamacare are going to do to rescue those programs which will be insolvent: SS: dies in 2033 Medicare: becomes inoperable in 2026 Medicaid; 2026-2030 JELLYSTONE: A guy named Jacob Borden wrote an excellent piece in the journal a couple of weeks ago about the Jellystone Caldera. The Yellowstone caldera has exploded 3x previously. The last such eruption was 631,000 years ago; the one before that was 669,000 years prior. It's not a matter of if it'll erupt but when. NASA's JPL found in a 2017 study that the devastation of such an eruption would exceed that of an asteroid 1½ miles wide crashing to Earth. That is ¼ the size of the asteroid that rendered the dinosaurs extinct. In 2014 the U.S. Geological Survey modeled the likely ash distribution from a Yellowstone super-eruption. They found that the ash radius would reach New York, with as much as 3½ inches of ash falling as far east as Lincoln, Neb. Cropland across the U.S. and Canada would be destroyed, and the release into the atmosphere of sulfate aerosols would create a global “volcanic winter” lasting generations. Fortunately, the JPL also points to a potential solution—horizontal drilling for geothermal energy extraction—that would siphon off excess energy, producing enough electricity to power as many as 20 million homes for a few thousand years...

In this episode of Smart Energy Voices, host Debra Chanil discusses several innovative retro-commission projects with Robert Berninger, Director of Plant Operations, Energy and Engineering at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). Bob oversees more than 4 million square feet of critical care facilities in the heart of New York City. Listen as he recounts his experience evaluating potential projects so you can benefit from the great insights Bob has to share. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Robert Berninger's role at MSKCC [02:18] Sloan's innovation award [03:28] The importance of FDD (Fault Detection & Diagnostics) [05:24] Current retro-commissioning [09:44] Cogeneration projects [11:11] Sloan Kettering's vendor vetting process [14:49] Beginning Moves to Fault Detection & Diagnostics Robert Berninger oversees approximately eleven buildings as well as the entire energy budget for the institution. Bob started at MSKCC as the Energy Manager and has worked with them for over fifteen years. In his time there, the institution has kept its energy footprint steady while also doubling in square footage. A significant factor in that achievement was Fault Detection & Diagnostics (FDD). Bob was initially leery of fault detection. He thought it would highlight issues in the building that they couldn't correct due to other issues. They began with a systematic approach, starting with the chilled water plant, heating plant, and ended with the VAV box level. With FDD, MSKCC is alerted when an issue occurs rather than waiting for a problem to be reported. This reduction in time from issue to resolution has saved energy, time, and money. Innovation Awards In 2020, MSKCC won the Smart Energy Decisions Innovation Award for Healthcare Energy Data Management for Virtual Energy Monitoring and Fault Detection and Diagnostics. The project started as a response to New York City Local Law #87, which requires all buildings over 25,000 square feet to have an energy audit and retro-commissioning every ten years. In 2018, the Breast and Imaging Center at MSKCC was due for this audit, so they engaged a vendor to create a report. MSKCC used this report to come up with several capital ECMs (energy conservation measures) that had been highlighted. One of the projects was to install a virtual energy managing and fault diagnostic system. This addition was in response to the finding that any time a system was retro-commissioned, the energy usage would gradually increase and undo the initial benefits if the system wasn't constantly monitored. With fault detection and diagnostics, MSKCC is able to find out immediately if something wasn't working correctly. This warning allows them to address issues and maintain the benefits of the original adjustments. The Positive Results of Retro-commissioning Bob defines retro-commissioning as bringing the building back to its original design intent. Recommissioning is going back and commissioning the building again if the building was commissioned in its beginning. And finally, continuous commissioning is using the tools that you have with the BMS and FDD to make sure that the building is operating at its design intent at all times. The continuous detection will provide an alert if something within the system drifts, allowing an immediate repair. The main campus of MSKCC is using steam to hot water conversion along with cogeneration. The three buildings in the project use Con Ed steam, which is a relatively wasteful system. MSKCC is working on converting 130 air handlers using steam preheats to hot water, changing out the coils, or re-using their chilled water coils for heating using low-temperature hot water. They're also installing a total of 3.3 MW of cogeneration, which is matched to their base heating load so that there's no waste of heat. Overall the project will save the institution about $8-10 million per year in energy costs. That's an improvement anyone can support. This and every podcast will be an extension of my weekly radio shows, which will allow us to dig deeper into topics that are germain to your financial portfolio, and that include how politics and legislation affects your finances, your taxes, and your liberty and your freedoms. My partner in this endeavor is my long time friend and local radio personality PJ Jaycox. Why don't you tell our very first audience a little about yourself PJ. Today happens to be election day, 2020. I want to briefly discuss Form vs Function. This is important insight that really exemplifies how modern politics work; how people think! As an engineer, I have been trained to judge stuff based on whether and how it works; whether it is efficient and safe and does the job it was built to tackle. How things look, sound and make me feel are at best secondary and tertiary concerns for me. So when president Donald J Trump tweets out some nasty message impugning those who disagree with him on, lets say, reducing taxes, I couldn't care less how it sounds to me. I DO care whether it will put more money in my pocket and accelerate economic growth (which tax cuts always do BTW). And, I am a conservative. We conservatives value “FUNCTION” over “FORM”. REPEAT. And we rapscallions who actually think for ourselves vote for people like Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump. On the other side of the coin are people who value words. They value what people SAY, HOW they say it, and how that makes them feel, regardless of whether or not those words are of any use; regardless of whatever policy proposal being spoken about actually works. I give you the welfare state, Obamacare, Red Energy, socialism, BLM, inc, ANTIFA, and the Global Warming Hoax; all stuff that makes neo-liberals feel warm and fuzzy all over but are of little use in the real world. People that value how things look and sound over whether or not they actually work typically suck at math and logic. Many of them have been indoctrinated at America's so-called “most prestigious universities” where they were taught WHAT to think vs HOW to think, which prohibits them from organizing and analyzing facts in any way that would allow them to draw substantive conclusions. These people call themselves “liberals” which is a UUUUGE misnomer. The word liberal was first used to describe people like PJ and me; we advocate for low taxes, freedom and liberty, property rights and a light gov't regulatory touch. NEW or NEO liberals are opposed to everything we stand for; they want us (but not them) to pay higher taxes, they usurp our freedoms and liberties by packing courts with judges that believe it is their right to legislate from the bench, they try to commandeer our income and property rights, and they payback their supporters in the legal profession with a massive regulatory state. These self-described compassionate folks vote for charlatans like Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Joe Biden. Anyway, I digress. In this week's show we are going to discuss the economic fallout from the Covid 19 lockdowns, we will delve deeper into what Covid 19 is, who it harms physically, where it came from, and the economic and personal damage caused by the lockdowns. So fasten your seatbelts: The Covid story is vast, and we can only touch on some aspects of it in this 30 minute podcast. First and foremost, you need to understand this: the Covid 19 pandemic will be relegated to history's dust bin when the presidential election and recounts are finished and vaccines are released to the general public. First, let's look at just some of theThe...

Welcome to the first episode of “Annmarie’s Breaking Ground”. First of all thank you for listening. I want to let you know what you can expect in the upcoming episodes, briefly introduce myself, and let you know why people in this industry is so important to me. This podcast is for you if are in the building industry and would like to learn about best practices, new products, and ways to optimize your building efficiency. You’ll hear what some pioneering CEO’s and leading executives are doing to improve their bottom line in an effort to train and retain their staff. You’ll hear how some have recreated themselves in our growing age of technology to stay relevant and you’ll also hear about how certain products, services and innovations are affecting our industry. To give a little background on me, I am a consulting engineer from New York City and the owner of Enhanced Building Solutions, a company that’s committed to transforming the culture of the building industry through training and development. I’ve worked in many industries including residential, commercial, educational, healthcare and even in the maritime industry for a short period of time. As a passionate consultant around operators staying relevant in our industry, I’ve seen it first hand that inspiring a desire to learn, is the most effective training, companies can offer their employees. I’ll tell you why this subject and industry is so important to me; my dad was an HVAC technician that installed air conditioners in NYC back in the 1980’s. He had my sister and I as his two little helpers. At 6 years old I learned how to use tools and was fascinated by air conditioning and refrigeration. In High School I studied Architecture but all of my professors said Annmarie, you need to be an engineer. After my dad passed away, at the early age of 41, I decided to go to the college that promised more than just a degree, I went to SUNY Maritime College, the hidden treasure located in the Bronx underneath the Throgs Neck Bridge. In 1998 new technologies had just started to emerge. Even with my degree in Plant Facilities Engineering and United States Coast Guard Third assistant engineers license, I remember feeling lost and afraid to ask for help when I was expected to know about a new piece of equipment. I was briefly instructed on it, and received piece mail information on it (more so because now that I look back on it, I don’t think they knew much about it). There were no manuals. Figuring it out is what made us special. I remember making a mistake and almost damaged some major equipment because of this lack of training and direction. Fast-forward 18 years I witnessed new buildings with expensive latest and greatest equipment having to be replaced in less than two years because of the same lack of instruction. I heard everyone blame the operators and remember what it was like for me. As the owner, I took a look at how the operators were being trained and made it my responsibility to do what was necessary to prepare them. I saw how effective providing building specific training was and wanted to share this training concept with a larger audience. In a predominantly male industry, I was always embarrassed to ask for help especially when surrounded by the, “you are expected to know this stuff” attitude. I know how intimidating it was for me when I first started 18 years ago and because I still see it today; I wanted to do something. Owners and operators need to take responsibility and make this industry inviting to a younger generation. I saw it first hand where operators were discouraged from asking questions and voicing their opinion both by upper management and more so by their peers. As a result, operators have become complacent and not motivated to perform at their best. Some industries require unions to provide foundational knowledge, which they do. However, innovation and technology is growing so fast that it’s difficult to keep up with it. Specific training is required and necessary. We have information accessible at our fingertips but with no structure in place every desire to be proactive will result in a reactive industry. It will only get worse unless we act now. My passion is to motivate operators in the building industry to perform at their highest potential; my methods inspire learning, encourage team building and produce energy saving results. I want to encourage more people to work in our industry. My goal it to empower staff to take responsibility, encourage leadership, and help get focused on the day-to-day operations. If you’re interested in learning more, please feel free to contact me at www.ebs.nyc be sure to subscribe and don’t forget to share this with your friends.
In which, Andrew and Joseph De Paul discuss stories from eight years of comic cons. Hilarity ensues. Be forewarned, due partly to the content and partly to the fact that they both attended SUNY Maritime College, this podcast is explicit. Adult supervision is advised.
