Sencillamente fabuloso. Portland, Oregon-based Pink Martini whisks listeners away on globetrotting musical journeys, singing in Armenian, Portuguese, Arabic, French & Xhosa, among many other languages - and that's just their latest record, Je Dis Oui!. Their founder, pianist Thomas Lauderdale, recently described the group this way: "If the United Nations had a house band in 1962, we aspire to be that band." The 'little orchestra'- some 12-members strong, takes over our studio.
It's another awe-inspiring episode from the Someone Gets Me podcast as I share the screen with China Forbes, the lead singer, and songwriter of the band Pink Martini. A gifted multi-potentialite, China's exceptional talents, coupled with her rich life experience, is truly a story worth telling (and made into a movie!) Tune in as she shares her journey of what it's like pursuing many passions, enrolling at Harvard University, where she juggled visual arts, acting and singing, and even finishing as cum laude. China's life shows us how music is a source of hope, how it takes courage to focus on giving your gifts to the world, and the importance of accepting that the good and the bad things in life don't last forever. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ A musical genius making beauty from sadness. China's unusual childhood, her mother and father, divorcing when she was five, and the many struggles after that are depicted in a movie her sister made called Infinitely Polar Bear, starring Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana. Such was the backdrop as China grew up and made it through with the help of art, music, and her eternal optimism for life. ✔️ She is releasing the song "Rise," which she wrote for her Pink Martini bandmate, Derek Rieth. "I just felt like my words did not succeed in helping him, but I felt that they could help someone else who was struggling with suicidal thoughts. I've been sitting on it for six years, but it's now coming out; I do believe that this song will help many people." ✔️ There is still more to be done by the singing sensation, and she has this to say to fellow creatives: "You need not care what anyone thinks. It would be best if you dedicated time every day to do your craft. Trust that no one else is you and don't compare yourself to others, and you need to get the focus off of yourself because self-consciousness is paralyzing. Ask yourself, how do I give my gifts to the world?" ✔️ China recently co-written Pink Martini's two latest hits, including "The Lemonade Song," approaching 2 million streams on Spotify alone. This soaring anthem of orchestral pop, written on either side of a breakup, celebrates the strength we all have to persevere and survive and learn to love our lives. It describes each individual's Full Circle: the power each of us has to steer our lives in the direction we want to go, a direction that will end up back where we started, but as a different person each time we come around. China Forbes was born and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she graduated cum laude from Harvard and was awarded the Jonathan Levy Prize for acting. She appeared in New York regional theatre and Off-Broadway productions, earning her Equity card alongside future stars of stage and screen such as Norm Lewis, Peter Jacobson, and Rainn Wilson. Soon after college China formed and sang with her first band. They regularly performed at NYC clubs CBGB's Gallery, Mercury Lounge, and Brownies. Her first solo album Love Handle was released in 1995, and she was chosen to sing "Ordinary Girl," the theme song to the TV show Clueless. In 1995, she was plucked from New York City by Harvard classmate Thomas Lauderdale to sing with Pink Martini. She has written many of Pink Martini's most beloved songs with Lauderdale, including "Sympathique," "Lilly," "Clementine," "Let's Never Stop Falling in Love," "Over the Valley," and "A Snowglobe Christmas," which can be heard on Pink Martini's holiday album Joy to the World. Her original song "Hey Eugene" is the title track of Pink Martini's third album, and many of her songs can also be heard on television and in film. She sang "Qué Será Será" over the opening and closing credits of Jane Campion's film In the Cut. Her original song "The Northern Line" appears at the end of sister Maya Forbes' directorial debut Infinitely Polar Bear, released in 2015 by Sony Pictures Classics. With Pink Martini, Forbes has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Later with Jools Holland. She has performed songs in over twenty languages. China has sung duets with Michael Feinstein, Jimmy Scott, Georges Moustaki, Henri Salvador, Saori Yuki, Faith Prince, Carol Channing, and Rufus Wainwright, among others. She has performed in venues from Carnegie Hall to Red Rocks, the Sydney Opera House to the Grand Rex in Paris. She released her second solo album '78 on Heinz Records in 2008, a collection of autobiographical folk-rock songs. She has recently co-written Pink Martini's two latest hits, including "The Lemonade Song," approaching 2 million streams on Spotify. It is known as the city's living room. Pioneer Courthouse Square is where Portlander's come to celebrate, to protest, to commemorate, and most of all to be together. The site's long history includes the city's first public building and, later, its first grand hotel. This is an encore presentation of an episode from last spring with Thomas Lauderdale of Pink Martini. He was one of the first people I wanted for 12 Songs because when I first interviewed him in 2014, our conversation ended with a then-off-topic conversation on Christmas music. He had an appreciation of beautiful Christmas music that I liked but was only starting to work out a way to discuss. The pianist and bandleader for contemporary lounge band loves Christmas music, and when I interviewed him for the show last fall, he turned me on to a beautifully weightless version of "O Come All Ye Faithful" by Julie Andrews. Unfortunately, that interview was lost to the technical difficulties that accompany working new gear into your recording set-up, but we were able to talk again last spring. This time, we talked more than before about the business of Christmas music, including the place their Joy to the World occupies in the band’s catalogue, and the role Starbucks played in getting the project off the ground. As Lauderdale explained in a story on the band’s history that I wrote at MySpiltMilk.com, Pink Martini began playing predominantly Henry Mancini compositions. The band emerged at roughly the same time as the ’90s lounge revival, but it outlasted the other bands from that time because of his affection for the music itself and its more exotic manifestations. In October, Pink Martini released two new EPs, Bésame Mucho and Tomorrow, with vocalists Edna Vazquez andi Jimmie Herrod respectively. Pink Martini will play a series of Holiday shows in California starting on December 1, including a 7-day, 9-show stand in San Francisco. Tickets are on sale now.
In the episode we feature performers Jimmie Herrod and Edna Vasquez before their performance with the glamorous and worldly "little orchestra," otherwise known as PINK MARTINI. Jimmie Herrod is a Portland-based full-time vocalist on tour with Pink Martini, and Edna Vasquez is a singer, songwriter and guitarist from Mexico. We chat with these two incredibly talented performers on tour life, collaboration, Lizzo vs. Beyonce, how they rejuvenate their creativity, and much more! Stay tuned for a very special vinyl pick after the interview featuring a Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie crossover classic. ------------------------ Pink Martini was started by musician Thomas Lauderdale in 1994. Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world – crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop. Pink Martini features renowned singer China Forbes and recently went on tour with Australian singer, Meow Meow.
I wanted to interview Thomas Lauderdale for 12 Songs since I interviewed him in 2016 to preview a summertime show in New Orleans and we detoured into 20 minutes of unusable conversation on Christmas music. The pianist and bandleader for contemporary lounge band Pink Martini loves Christmas music, and when I interviewed him for the show last fall, he turned me on to a beautifully weightless version of "O Come All Ye Faithful" by Julie Andrews. Unfortunately, that interview was lost to the inevitable technical difficulties that accompany working new gear into your recording set-up. Pink Martini tours the world and stays so busy that it has taken until now to get a second chance at an interview on Christmas for the podcast. This is not the same conversation we had the first time. We talked at length about "White Christmas," which appears in two different version on Pink Martini's Joy to the World just as we did the first time, but we also talked about the role of Starbucks in the album's origin. We talked about the Christmas song he wished that he hadn't recorded, and his inability to get a handle on Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You." Before the conversation turned to Christmas music, we talked about Pink Martini's early days as "the house band for progressive causes" and its debut album, Sympathetique. I've edited most of that from this podcast to keep it focused on Christmas music, but you can read that part of the interview at MySpiltMilk.com.
PDXISH welcomes the incredibly delightful Thomas Lauderdale to our show. Thomas talks about the origins of Pink Martini, plays some of his favorite tunes and shares insight into the world at large. Please welcome Thomas to the show.
It’s set to be a blistering weekend, so we’re going to do our best to cool things down this hour with classical music in the woods, golden harmonies soaring over the Willamette, and a brilliant, new blue pigment.Classical Music Meets Silent Disco At Stunning WPA SitesThe pianist Hunter Noack is harking back to the Works Progress Administration era with a concert series called “In A Landscape.” He has invited such musical luminaries as Pink Martini’s Thomas Lauderdale and China Forbes to join him in playing classical music in some of the region’s most famous WPA sites. Think Timberline Lodge, Council Crest, and the Oneonta Tunnel. Noack has a history of bringing music to unlikely places, which is why he agreed to drag a piano out into the West Hills to play a few of the songs for this audio postcard.Sista In The Brotherhood - 7:25The Portland-filmed “Sista in the Brotherhood” follows a day-in-the-life of a black woman working at the Sellwood Bridge construction site. The film is based on the research of producer Roberta Hunte and the real life experience of co-writer and director Dawn Jones Redstone, who spent years working construction and training other women in the trade. The film has been screening around the country at festivals and even won the Best Short Film Award at this year’s Portland International Film Festival. The Band Joseph's Golden Harmonies Soar Over The Willamette River - 17:19One of our favorite musical discoveries last year was the band Joseph. They’re three sisters from Estacada, Oregon, and their harmonies are like that golden tone the sun casts as it sets on the high desert or the Cascade foothills.Allison, Meegan and Natalie Clossner spent the last year on the road, perfecting their harmonies and writing new music. Now they’re back with a highly anticipated follow up, “I’m Alone, No You’re Not,” due out Aug. 26, and the sisters suggested the crazy idea to meet us and opbmusic on the Willamette River's Eastbank Esplanade to play a couple of songs (watch opbmusic's videos). The First Iraqi Vet To Write A Graphic Novel About The War - 25:08While in Iraq, the marine Maximilian Uriarte, a Corvallis native, started writing a comic strip titled “Terminal Lance.” It quickly became a hit and now runs in the "Marine Corps Times." Since returning from the war, Uriarte has expanded the strip into the graphic novel “The White Donkey,” the first graphic novel about the war written by a veteran.Blind Pilot's New Album Navigates Straight To The Heart - 33:15Blind Pilot's newest album, “And Then Like Lions,” may be their most intimate yet. Lead singer Israel Nebeker told us during a performance at the OPB studio that many of the songs were written in response to the death of his father. "And then, as an album, it turned into an invitation into a conversation about loss in general," he said.Scientists Discover The First New Blue Pigment In 200 Years - 43:46Get this: there hasn’t been a new blue pigment created since 1802. Now, we're talking about a new color, as every color already exists in the light spectrum. We're talking about a new pigment — the chemical or substance that gives paint, dye or other objects their color. Pigments have to be derived from nature or made in a lab, which is exactly what happened in 2009 at Oregon State University, when researchers were heating up elements in a furnace. Their goal was to create new materials that could be used in electronics – instead they found a brilliant new blue pigment. And it’s finally making it to the market.
One of the finest bands in America plays with one of the finest symphony orchestras this weekend. My chat with Pink Martini founder Thomas Lauderdale.
Libby Purves meets artist Grayson Perry; musician Thomas Lauderdale; former gang member Tracey Miller and magician Drummond Money-Coutts. Drummond Money-Coutts is a magician and illusionist. He presents a new series, Beyond Magic with DMC, in which he travels the world demonstrating his skills with card tricks, stunts and occasional cheating. Each episode recreates a historic trick or stunt. Beyond Magic with DMC is on National Geographic Channel. Grayson Perry is an artist who won the Turner Prize in 2003 and presented the BBC Reith Lectures on BBC Radio 4 in 2013. His book, Playing to the Gallery, is based on those Reith Lectures. He is presenting a three-part series for Channel 4, Grayson Perry: Who Are You? The programmes focus on identity and he creates portraits - from tapestries to sculptures and pots - of diverse people who are trying to define who they are. Subjects include former politician Chris Huhne. There is an accompanying art display at the National Portrait Gallery. Playing to the Gallery is published by Particular Books. Tracey Miller is a former gang member. Known as 'Sour', she was part of a notorious gang that terrorised areas of south London in the 1990s. After serving a prison sentence, she eventually turned her life around and is now a campaigner who urges teenagers not to follow her own path into gang life. Her book Sour - My Story, written with Lucy Bannerman, is published by Harper Collins. Thomas Lauderdale is the founder and pianist with Pink Martini, a 12-piece orchestra from Portland, Oregon. After an early career in local politics, he founded Pink Martini in 1994 to liven up the entertainment then on the bill at political rallies. Once described as somewhere between a "thirties Cuban dance orchestra, a classical chamber ensemble and a Brazilian marching band," Pink Martini has performed its multilingual repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras around the world. Pink Martini is currently on tour - UK dates include the Cambridge Corn Exchange. Producer: Paula McGinley.
Ray talks to Thomas Lauderdale, founder of Pink Martini: Two months ago, I had heard of the Pink Panty Pulldown, though admittedly not at all since my college days, but I had not heard of Pink Martini. Pink Martini is a band. A damn good one, too. I wish I could tell you what kind […]
