The Oregon-bred indie folk music outfit Blind Pilot goes on a deep spiritual journal on their new album In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain (produced by Josh Kaufman). The music inspiration for frontman Israel Nebeker lay in his songwriting process. After struggling with writing for years (this is the first Blind Pilot album in 8 years), he set aside the songs he *had* been working (which will be included on a new solo record in 2025). Nebeker gave himself a month to write an album's worth of songs to present to the band. He demoed the songs and headed out for a trip centered around spiritual growth in Norway.Searching for ancestral connections, Israel sought out the Samí culture and community (a semi-nomadic Scandinavian people), in which he has roots. He participated in a Samí shamanic journey exploring indigenous spirituality. A Sámi shaman took him on a drum journey and invited him to listen for ancestors and visions. He had a vision where his ancestors were beckoning him to a path that led straight to a mountain, which was clearly his family legacy and origin. Back in the studio with the band, he relistened to his songs and was very surprised to realize that the album was about his ancestors. The connection that the rest of the band felt in delivering the music is palpable. The special emotional dynamic that always exists on a Blind Pilot is supercharged on the new album In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain. Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? Born of the stark beauty and bittersweet desolation of the high desert, California trio Heavy Gus blurs the lines between grungy garage band fare, hazy surf, and dreamy indie rock on their captivating full-length debut, Notions. Bristling with live-wire electricity, the collection is lean and spare, fueled by distorted guitars and a driving rhythm section, and the performances are loose and organic to match, captured spontaneously in the moment with little room for overthinking or second-guessing. While all three bandmates come to Heavy Gus from very different worlds—Ulvang from The Lumineers, drummer Ryan Dobrowski from Blind Pilot, and singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Dorota Szuta from an unlikely combination of marine science and music—they fit together like puzzle pieces here, bound by the kind of love and trust that can only grow from years of deep kinship. The result is a record all about distance and connection from a band built on intimacy and personal chemistry, a mesmerizing debut that calls to mind everything from Meat Puppets and The Breeders to Yo La Tengo and Acetone in its artful balance of hope and fatalism, loneliness and desire, strength and vulnerability. Originally hailing from the rugged shores of Lake Superior, Sasha Mercedes writes image-provoking songs and delivers them with passion and conviction. Her powerful voice turns heads, as she beats on her guitar, brow furrowed and snarling! Mercedes has released five Americana solo albums, and though there will always be a soft spot in her heart for singer-songwriter stylings, Mercedes hasn't been tethered to any genre. She was the front-woman for Twin Cities-based rock band, Hot Pink Hangover, as well as the hook writer and fellow performer in Minneapolis hip hop trio, Channeling Grey. She has traveled the world making music and drawing inspiration out of every experience, which is evident in the lyrics of her brilliantly crafted compositions. She has shared the stage with TLC, Badflower, Dar Williams, Don Mclean, Tracy Bonham, Guy Davis, Pete Seeger, and others. She may seem hard on the outside, but Mercedes has always believed that rugged shores can polish even the roughest of stones. We are starting 2020 by taking a look back at a few of our favorite shows from 2019. This show was originally released in November of 2019. It features special guest Israel Nebeker. He is the founder of Blind Pilot and a singer/songwriter whose music now reaches millions of fans. In this episode, Israel talks about confronting one of the darkest periods of his life by wandering into the Black Forest in Germany—with no path to follow and not sure if he would ever find his way out. It was only by confronting his loneliness, his fear, and his belief that he was powerless to change the dynamic that he experienced a significant awakening.  This interview was voted one of our favorites by the Beyond Well Team because of how open, authentic and vulnerable  Israel and his music is. Don’t miss it.

In this episode Mick and Tristan talk about their recent experience at The Mr Twin Sister show at The Biltmore. Tristan met Andrea Estella and died just a little, and Mick drank 2 (TWO!) non alch beers- madness! Tristan is convinced the new 33 Acres tasting room is a riff off of Kramer's apartment from Seinfeld (levels, Jerry!) and it turns out Mick speaks French- who knew! Our beer pick for this episode is a brew from Mick's past as as traveling Vagabond/merc for hire- The Rogue Ales Morimoto Soba Ale straight out of Portland, Oregon. Our album introspective is from indie folk hippies Blind Pilot; their 2008 debut Three Rounds And A Sound. If the disposition of that album is a little too sunny and optimistic, don't worry because our film pick is the oppressively sinister high concept sci fi noir thriller Dark City. New and noteworthy music from Mr Twin Sister, Marie-Pierre Arthur, Low, and Chilly Gonzales. Be sure to check out our Apple Music EP18 playlist for all of our featured tracks. I had the pleasure of having a conversation with Adam Lamb. The idea was to talk about how various types of masculinity impact the workplace. (Side Note: I am trying not to use the term “toxic masculinity” anymore because I realized I fundamentally disagree with it. It is too easy to use that to mean men are toxic or to dismiss outright certain expressions of masculinity that may not be as “cool” or “woke.” The men we most want to reach probably aren't going to listen if that's the term we're using. I'm still working on a new term that better fits. Maybe, traumatized masculinity but I am not sure. I digress.) And we did talk about that. And much more including the role that conscious men - or harmonized men, as Adam talks about it - can take in the ongoing #metoo conversation. It was a cool conversation even if we didn't quite talk about what I had intended. Practical Tactical Men need to find a place where they can own all of who they are in neutrality. In other words: accept themselves and own all of their imperfections without judgment and shame. Join a men's group. If you can't find one, start one! Get on Meetup.com. There are online resources to guide you on how to do it. Body work. Some type of body work. There are numerous ways that we can take care of our bodies. Our spirit is the rider and our body is the horse. Start with something to honor the horse! You can learn more about Adam at www.Adammlamb.com Check out his new book An Initiated Man Adam Lamb was born in Medford Mass in the turbulent 1960's. His mother is a Cuban immigrant and his father was a Professor of Modern Languages at Purdue University. Adam spent most of his life as a professional chef, writing non fiction in between cooking fish. A story teller since an early age, Adam sang in an all original rock and roll band in the 90's, writing all the lyrics, arrangements and recording three cd's with the South Florida band, Blind Pilot. He has three siblings as well as three grown children, and one grandson who all wish to remain nameless lest they get connected, socially, to Adam's infirmity and self indulgence. He is a sought after speaker on the issues of purpose, leading a thriving life and enjoying successful relationships. Following a conversation where the right questions were finally asked, Adam has dedicated himself to paying forward the freedom with which he now lives his life. He now coaches and guides those who are looking to take action in creating the lives they know is possible. He hosts a weekly Facebook Live called 'The Morning MAN-ifesto' and a monthly podcast, 'MAN-ifesto Radio'. Adam's published works include: Getting Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable, Profanity & Its Proper Use and An Initiated Man, Finally. His newest book, ‘Circle Jerk – Lessons of Manhood My Father Never Taught Me' is due out in summer 2019.

Working Class Audio Session #119 with Tucker Martine!!! Tucker Martine is a record producer, musician and composer and the son of singer and songwriter Layng Martine, Jr.,  Tucker grew up in Nashville, Tennessee where he played in bands and tinkered with recording devices before moving to Boulder, Colorado after graduating from high school. In Colorado, Martine was a DJ at a public radio station KGNU. He would frequently play two or more records at once on the air to experiment with creating new sounds. Martine also took courses at the Naropa Institute where he studied sound collage and befriended Harry Smith - the ethnomusicologist, artist and Kabbalist - who made a large impression on Martine. 1993, Martine moved to Seattle, Washington where he began to combine his skills and interests. He joined Wayne Horvitz's chamber group The 4 Plus 1 Ensemble where Martine's instrument was a series of looping and sound manipulating devices which were fed by the groups otherwise acoustic instruments. Martine received a Grammy nomination in 2007 in the "best engineered album" category for the Floratone album with Bill Frisell on Blue Note. He has also released several albums of his field recordings. As a composer and musician Martine has released 2 albums under the recording pseudonym Mount Analog and a 3rd one is on the way. Additionally, Microsoft called upon Martine's creativity when they asked him to help compose the startup and branding sounds for Microsoft's new operating system Vista. Today Martine lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife, singer songwriter Laura Veirs and continues to make records in his own studio, Flora Recording & Playback. Tucker has worked with artists such as The Decemberists, R.E.M., My Morning Jacket, Modest Mouse, Beth Orton, Neko Case, Mudhoney, Bill Frisell, Sufjan Stevens, Spoon, Grandaddy, Mavis Staples, Iron And Wine, The Jayhawks, Karl Blau, Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros, Blind Pilot, Camera Obscura, Stephen Malkmus, k.d. lang, She and Him, M Ward, Case/lang/veirs, Jesse Sykes and Laura Veirs.

It’s set to be a blistering weekend, so we’re going to do our best to cool things down this hour with classical music in the woods, golden harmonies soaring over the Willamette, and a brilliant, new blue pigment.Classical Music Meets Silent Disco At Stunning WPA SitesThe pianist Hunter Noack is harking back to the Works Progress Administration era with a concert series called “In A Landscape.” He has invited such musical luminaries as Pink Martini’s Thomas Lauderdale and China Forbes to join him in playing classical music in some of the region’s most famous WPA sites. Think Timberline Lodge, Council Crest, and the Oneonta Tunnel. Noack has a history of bringing music to unlikely places, which is why he agreed to drag a piano out into the West Hills to play a few of the songs for this audio postcard.Sista In The Brotherhood - 7:25The Portland-filmed “Sista in the Brotherhood” follows a day-in-the-life of a black woman working at the Sellwood Bridge construction site. The film is based on the research of producer Roberta Hunte and the real life experience of co-writer and director Dawn Jones Redstone, who spent years working construction and training other women in the trade. The film has been screening around the country at festivals and even won the Best Short Film Award at this year’s Portland International Film Festival. The Band Joseph's Golden Harmonies Soar Over The Willamette River - 17:19One of our favorite musical discoveries last year was the band Joseph. They’re three sisters from Estacada, Oregon, and their harmonies are like that golden tone the sun casts as it sets on the high desert or the Cascade foothills.Allison, Meegan and Natalie Clossner spent the last year on the road, perfecting their harmonies and writing new music. Now they’re back with a highly anticipated follow up, “I’m Alone, No You’re Not,” due out Aug. 26, and the sisters suggested the crazy idea to meet us and opbmusic on the Willamette River's Eastbank Esplanade to play a couple of songs (watch opbmusic's videos). The First Iraqi Vet To Write A Graphic Novel About The War - 25:08While in Iraq, the marine Maximilian Uriarte, a Corvallis native, started writing a comic strip titled “Terminal Lance.” It quickly became a hit and now runs in the "Marine Corps Times." Since returning from the war, Uriarte has expanded the strip into the graphic novel “The White Donkey,” the first graphic novel about the war written by a veteran.Blind Pilot's New Album Navigates Straight To The Heart - 33:15Blind Pilot's newest album, “And Then Like Lions,” may be their most intimate yet. Lead singer Israel Nebeker told us during a performance at the OPB studio that many of the songs were written in response to the death of his father. "And then, as an album, it turned into an invitation into a conversation about loss in general," he said.Scientists Discover The First New Blue Pigment In 200 Years - 43:46Get this: there hasn’t been a new blue pigment created since 1802. Now, we're talking about a new color, as every color already exists in the light spectrum. We're talking about a new pigment — the chemical or substance that gives paint, dye or other objects their color. Pigments have to be derived from nature or made in a lab, which is exactly what happened in 2009 at Oregon State University, when researchers were heating up elements in a furnace. Their goal was to create new materials that could be used in electronics – instead they found a brilliant new blue pigment. And it’s finally making it to the market.

Out of the Box Album of the Week with Paul Shugrue

The Portland Oregon band takes their time, “And then Like Lions” is their first album in five years and only their third since 2008. Their music has a similar tendency, each song starts slow but builds in intensity and meaning.

Ward Sings to His Baby (and opbmusic)
The latest release from M. Ward, "More Rain," might sound like a Portland soundtrack, but it belies its name with sunny sounds of doo-wop and golden era AM radio sensibilities. The artist came by the OPB studios to play a few songs with a power backing band (REM’s Scott McCoy, Mike Coykendall, and Alialujah Choir’s Adam Selzer and Alia Farah), who he insists he did not find on Craigslist. Watch the videos, and see Ward at Revolution Hall on July 16 and 17.Joseph Heats Up On Late NightIt’s shaping up to be a great summer for the band Joseph, as the sister trio (Allison, Meegan, and Natalie Closner) blew it up this week on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," performing their new single "White Flag." We had the pleasure of talking with the sisters in a cozy acoustic session last year. The trio grew up on a small farm in Estacada. Currently, they are on tour for their new album, “I’m Alone, No You’re Not.” They'll be at Pickathon in Happy Valley, Oregon, August 5-7 and will circle back to Eugene in September. The Soul-Hop of Dirty RevivalDirty Revival brought their seven piece band down to the OPB studios to play some funky, energetic tracks off their 2015 self-titled album. The group sat down with host April Baer to talk touring, song reworks, and the social consciousness that permeates their music. You can watch videos of their performance here, and catch them live at the Doug Fir on June 25, Bend's Deschutes Brewery on June 27, and Portland's Columbia Park Annex for a Summer Free For All show on July 12.Blind Pilot Sails Back into Harbor with a New AlbumBlind Pilot’s 2008 debut album, “3 Rounds and a Sound,” made national headlines after they took the album on tour, by bike, riding down the west coast with their instruments in tow. We caught up with the band’s founders Israel Nebeker and Ryan Dobrowski last summer in Astoria for a special performance with classical cello star Sergey Antonov. Their new album, “And Then Like Lions,” is set to be released on Aug. 12. Catch the band live at the Liberty Theatre in Astoria on August 19 or see them in Portland and Eugene in October.1939 Ensemble Soar With Instrumental Power
Jose Medeles and David Coniglio built the sonic equivalent of a sweet ‘67 Camaro when they got together to play drums and vibraphones. The two artists came in for an opbmusic session to talk about where they’re headed. See them live at the PDX Pop Now Festival, alongside a roster of stellar local acts, July 22-24.
