That's a lot to talk about. As I'm sure you know China has been with Pink Martini since circa 1995. It's something that's taken her all over the world. It's another awe-inspiring episode from the Someone Gets Me podcast as I share the screen with China Forbes, the lead singer, and songwriter of the band Pink Martini. A gifted multi-potentialite, China's exceptional talents, coupled with her rich life experience, is truly a story worth telling (and made into a movie!) Tune in as she shares her journey of what it's like pursuing many passions, enrolling at Harvard University, where she juggled visual arts, acting and singing, and even finishing as cum laude. China's life shows us how music is a source of hope, how it takes courage to focus on giving your gifts to the world, and the importance of accepting that the good and the bad things in life don't last forever. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ A musical genius making beauty from sadness. China's unusual childhood, her mother and father, divorcing when she was five, and the many struggles after that are depicted in a movie her sister made called Infinitely Polar Bear, starring Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana. Such was the backdrop as China grew up and made it through with the help of art, music, and her eternal optimism for life. ✔️ She is releasing the song "Rise," which she wrote for her Pink Martini bandmate, Derek Rieth. "I just felt like my words did not succeed in helping him, but I felt that they could help someone else who was struggling with suicidal thoughts. I've been sitting on it for six years, but it's now coming out; I do believe that this song will help many people." ✔️ There is still more to be done by the singing sensation, and she has this to say to fellow creatives: "You need not care what anyone thinks. It would be best if you dedicated time every day to do your craft. Trust that no one else is you and don't compare yourself to others, and you need to get the focus off of yourself because self-consciousness is paralyzing. Ask yourself, how do I give my gifts to the world?" ✔️ China recently co-written Pink Martini's two latest hits, including "The Lemonade Song," approaching 2 million streams on Spotify alone. This soaring anthem of orchestral pop, written on either side of a breakup, celebrates the strength we all have to persevere and survive and learn to love our lives. It describes each individual's Full Circle: the power each of us has to steer our lives in the direction we want to go, a direction that will end up back where we started, but as a different person each time we come around. China Forbes was born and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she graduated cum laude from Harvard and was awarded the Jonathan Levy Prize for acting. She appeared in New York regional theatre and Off-Broadway productions, earning her Equity card alongside future stars of stage and screen such as Norm Lewis, Peter Jacobson, and Rainn Wilson. Soon after college China formed and sang with her first band. They regularly performed at NYC clubs CBGB's Gallery, Mercury Lounge, and Brownies. Her first solo album Love Handle was released in 1995, and she was chosen to sing "Ordinary Girl," the theme song to the TV show Clueless. In 1995, she was plucked from New York City by Harvard classmate Thomas Lauderdale to sing with Pink Martini. She has written many of Pink Martini's most beloved songs with Lauderdale, including "Sympathique," "Lilly," "Clementine," "Let's Never Stop Falling in Love," "Over the Valley," and "A Snowglobe Christmas," which can be heard on Pink Martini's holiday album Joy to the World. Her original song "Hey Eugene" is the title track of Pink Martini's third album, and many of her songs can also be heard on television and in film. She sang "Qué Será Será" over the opening and closing credits of Jane Campion's film In the Cut. Her original song "The Northern Line" appears at the end of sister Maya Forbes' directorial debut Infinitely Polar Bear, released in 2015 by Sony Pictures Classics. With Pink Martini, Forbes has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Later with Jools Holland. She has performed songs in over twenty languages. China has sung duets with Michael Feinstein, Jimmy Scott, Georges Moustaki, Henri Salvador, Saori Yuki, Faith Prince, Carol Channing, and Rufus Wainwright, among others. She has performed in venues from Carnegie Hall to Red Rocks, the Sydney Opera House to the Grand Rex in Paris. She released her second solo album '78 on Heinz Records in 2008, a collection of autobiographical folk-rock songs. She has recently co-written Pink Martini's two latest hits, including "The Lemonade Song," approaching 2 million streams on Spotify. Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast EPISODE #163 with Dr. Dan Hill, Ph.D. an internationally recognized expert on the role of emotions in politics, business, sports and pop culture, who has spoken to audiences in over 25 countries. There are two currencies in life, he says, “There's dollars and emotions.” For over 20 years now, Dan has specialized in the latter – often in terms of business applications, and often by analyzing facial expressions because he asserts “the most valuable 25 square inches of visual territory on earth runs from the eyebrows to the mouth.” There, people best reveal and communicate the affective responses that so often drive their behavior, whether in the marketplace, the workplace, their personal lives, or in realms like politics, and sports. Watch the interview on YouTube here.https://youtu.be/fT_SNrZM6rA Learn more about Dr. Dan Hill https://www.sensorylogic.com/ See past Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast Episodes https://www.achieveit360.com/episodes/ Back story 0-6:10 Interview with Dan Hill 6:10-1:10:25 In Today's Episode, you will learn: ✔︎ How to use facial coding to improve your results in your personal and professional life. ✔︎ Examples of how Dr. Hill used this skill in professional sports and in the classroom. ✔︎ The origins of facial coding beginning with Leonardo da Vinci, Darwin, Duchenne and Dr. Ekman. ✔︎ How Dr. Hill discovered this tool and how he has used it to build a successful career. ✔︎ Theory of Mind and Facial Coding--what emotion he stays away from. ✔︎ Our future leaders--What emotions will make them successful. If you want to be more successful in life, happier in your marriage, be an expert at handling your kids, a better manager at work, a more effective coach in sports, a better hiring manager, close more sales, or negotiate a better deal for yourself, an understanding of how to read someone else's facial expressions is imperative. To capture and quantify emotions, Dan pioneered the use of facial coding (the analysis of facial expressions) in market research starting in 1998 and his company, Sensory Logic, Inc[i]., has done work for over half of the world's top 100 consumer oriented, B2C companies. Dan has received seven U.S. patents related to facial coding and is also a certified Facial Action Coding System (FACS) practitioner[ii], which is a popular course, offered by someone I have studied in depth, Paul Ekman[iii] who's a well-known psychologist and co-discoverer of micro expressions. Dr. Ekman was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine[iv] in 2009, has worked with many government agencies, domestic and abroad and has compiled over 50 years of his research to create comprehensive training tools to read the hidden emotions of those around you and believes we can all improve our ability to do this, with training[v] and Dan Hill has this training. My vision is to bring the experts to you, share their books, resources, and ideas to help you to implement their proven strategies, whether you are a teacher working in the classroom or online, a student, or parent working in the corporate space. Our guest for this week's podcast, Dan Hill, whose latest books consist of Famous Faces Decoded: A Guidebook for Reading Others;[vi] Two Cheers for Democracy: How Emotions Drive Leadership Style[vii]; and First Blush: People's Intuitive Reactions to Famous Art[viii] will help us to take a deep dive into understanding why we need to be able to read the emotions in others. His earlier, business books include: About Face: The Secrets of Emotionally Effective Advertising[ix]; and Emotionomics: Leveraging Emotions for Business Success, which features a foreword by Sam Simon, co-creator of The Simpsons. He has a NEW book that was just released on AMAZON yesterday, Blah, Blah, Blah: A Snarky Guide to Office Lingo[x] that is a humorous take on how the workplace really operates and the fact that there's a little truth in every joke. Dan Hill is also the host of the EQ Spotlight Podcast[xi] where he has discussions with thought leaders about the importance of emotions in politics, culture and life. In 2014, Dan received front-page coverage in The New York Times for his work with professional and NCAA Division 1 sports teams. Other media coverage has ranged from TV appearances on ABC's “Good Morning America,” Bloomberg TV, CNBC, CNN, C-Span, ESPN, Fox, “The Today Show,” PBS, and so many others that I will link in the show notes. The Tennis Channel, to print and digital coverage in Allure, China Forbes, Cosmopolitan, Fast Company, The Financial Times, The Los Angeles Times, Politico, Time, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal. Dan was educated at St. Olaf College, Oxford University, Brown University, and Rutgers University. Along with his wife, Karen Bernthal, he nowadays splits his time between St. Paul, Minnesota and Palm Desert, California. I am very grateful for the fact that this podcast allows me to learn from some of the top leaders in the world on improving productivity and results. Sometimes, while preparing for interviews, I step back and just notice how lucky I am to be able to speak directly with these world leaders, that I have the chance to learn from them, and share their knowledge with you. As I am researching, and meeting new people, you had better believe I'm also applying what I'm learning to my own life. This way, it's like we are learning together. I will never take this learning opportunity for granted. I met Dan Hill, through Twitter, where he reached out to me, sharing his work and as I read his BIO I knew immediately that had to have him on the podcast to share his work with facing coding to help us to all understand how to read the emotions of others in our schools, sports environments and workplaces. This is a valuable skill that Dr. Paul Ekman believes we can all develop to help us to deal with what's important in our life, without having to take the time to “think” about it. With practice, we should all be able to use this skill to just “know” the best way to proceed. Let's meet Dan Hill and learn more about facial coding—what is it, and how can we use it in our own lives! Welcome Dan Hill, thank you for joining me on the podcast today. I have many questions for you but have to say that when we first met on Twitter, I recognized immediately that we needed to speak and it was a mix between the fact that I have been studying Dr. Eckman's work on understanding emotions, and the fact that you have been applying this for the past 20 years, successfully in many different sectors. I'm beyond excited to learn more from you on this topic. INTRO QUESTION: In your BIO, it mentions your front-page coverage in the New York Times for your work with professional and NCAA Division 1 sports teams and I had to look it up. I found the article “What Expressions Can Say About a Player”[xii] (Dec. 25, 2014) and Team's Turn to a Face Reader Looking for That Winning Smile (Dec. 25, 2014)[xiii] and wonder how did you use this skill to analyze sports players to profile a successful vs problem or non-coachable player? I know there are entire courses on this subject, but what should we all know about this skill, and how we can use it to improve how we interact, teach or coach others? IMAGE SOURCE: The New York Times December 25, 2014 https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/12/26/sports/NBA-faces-data.html I first heard about this idea of facing coding or reading emotions through facial expressions through Dr. Ekman's work, and then through Dr. John Medina where he mentioned Theory of Mind in our interview. What are the origins of facial coding (Da Vinci, Darwin, Duchenne, Ekman) How did you discover this tool? Would you say you have a particular aptitude for facial coding? How hard is it for people to learn this skill? I know that intuition must play a role here, but how accurate is this process? I first mentioned Theory of Mind (where we can analyze and infer other people's behaviors) on this podcast on episode #46[xiv]. Is facial coding like Theory of Mind? For educators in the classroom, can you suggest a couple of tips for helping them to understand their students better? (as you've taught college and also given many speeches)? What final thoughts do you think would be important for us all to take away with using facial coding in our schools, sports and workplaces? Thank you very much Dan for your time, research, and strategies for us to all use and implement to become better at recognizing emotions in others, as well as ourselves. I know that American psychologist Dr. Paul Ekman would agree with you that this is a skill that we should all understand so that we can deal with what's important in our life, quickly, with confidence, with this new understanding. For people who want to learn more about you, is the best place your website? What is your new book that you have coming out this week? Thank you Dan!! FOLLOW DR. When not on tour in faraway countries like Turkey, Lebanon, Greece and Japan, China Forbes lives in Portland, Oregon with her 9-year old son Cameron. Best known for her vocal work with the retro lounge band Pink Martini, China began her artistic career studying visual art at Harvard and later working as an Off-Broadway actress. She has also released two albums under her own name and is working on a third. China sings in 9 languages. In this episode we discuss her unusual upbringing in Boston, touring with Pink Martini, postpartum depression and her dreams for future projects. I spoke to China in my dining room in Portland, Oregon in December of 2017.
It’s set to be a blistering weekend, so we’re going to do our best to cool things down this hour with classical music in the woods, golden harmonies soaring over the Willamette, and a brilliant, new blue pigment.Classical Music Meets Silent Disco At Stunning WPA SitesThe pianist Hunter Noack is harking back to the Works Progress Administration era with a concert series called “In A Landscape.” He has invited such musical luminaries as Pink Martini’s Thomas Lauderdale and China Forbes to join him in playing classical music in some of the region’s most famous WPA sites. Think Timberline Lodge, Council Crest, and the Oneonta Tunnel. Noack has a history of bringing music to unlikely places, which is why he agreed to drag a piano out into the West Hills to play a few of the songs for this audio postcard.Sista In The Brotherhood - 7:25The Portland-filmed “Sista in the Brotherhood” follows a day-in-the-life of a black woman working at the Sellwood Bridge construction site. The film is based on the research of producer Roberta Hunte and the real life experience of co-writer and director Dawn Jones Redstone, who spent years working construction and training other women in the trade. The film has been screening around the country at festivals and even won the Best Short Film Award at this year’s Portland International Film Festival. The Band Joseph's Golden Harmonies Soar Over The Willamette River - 17:19One of our favorite musical discoveries last year was the band Joseph. They’re three sisters from Estacada, Oregon, and their harmonies are like that golden tone the sun casts as it sets on the high desert or the Cascade foothills.Allison, Meegan and Natalie Clossner spent the last year on the road, perfecting their harmonies and writing new music. Now they’re back with a highly anticipated follow up, “I’m Alone, No You’re Not,” due out Aug. 26, and the sisters suggested the crazy idea to meet us and opbmusic on the Willamette River's Eastbank Esplanade to play a couple of songs (watch opbmusic's videos). The First Iraqi Vet To Write A Graphic Novel About The War - 25:08While in Iraq, the marine Maximilian Uriarte, a Corvallis native, started writing a comic strip titled “Terminal Lance.” It quickly became a hit and now runs in the "Marine Corps Times." Since returning from the war, Uriarte has expanded the strip into the graphic novel “The White Donkey,” the first graphic novel about the war written by a veteran.Blind Pilot's New Album Navigates Straight To The Heart - 33:15Blind Pilot's newest album, “And Then Like Lions,” may be their most intimate yet. Lead singer Israel Nebeker told us during a performance at the OPB studio that many of the songs were written in response to the death of his father. "And then, as an album, it turned into an invitation into a conversation about loss in general," he said.Scientists Discover The First New Blue Pigment In 200 Years - 43:46Get this: there hasn’t been a new blue pigment created since 1802. Now, we're talking about a new color, as every color already exists in the light spectrum. We're talking about a new pigment — the chemical or substance that gives paint, dye or other objects their color. Pigments have to be derived from nature or made in a lab, which is exactly what happened in 2009 at Oregon State University, when researchers were heating up elements in a furnace. Their goal was to create new materials that could be used in electronics – instead they found a brilliant new blue pigment. And it’s finally making it to the market.
What happens when a conductor, a chanteuse, and a visual artist walk into a dance studio? To start out, you get words and descriptions like “floorography” and “it's jazz crabs versus hot rocks.” That is, if you're working with the likes of Pink Martini singer China Forbes, Oregon Symphony music director Carlos Kalmar, and artist Malia Jensen. The dance company BodyVox has always delighted in pushing boundaries, whether defying genre by mixing in things like opera or monsters, or defying physical laws by using video projection to make it look like they're dancing on the wall. Now they've invited eight well-known local artists to choreograph new dances for “The Pearl Dive Project.” Only catch? None of the artists are choreographers. Alongside Forbes, Kalmar and Jensen, there's a landscape architecture firm, a film director, a composer, and more.“We thought this has never been done: you find very highly evolved creative people in their field and then they jump from that field to our own and apply their creativity and imagination in choreography,” says BodyVox's co-artistic director Jamey Hampton. “So we became the curators of an absolute gusher of creativity.”Full story: http://www.opb.org/artsandlife/article/bodyvox-china-forbes-carlos-kalmar
Hear the Dandy Warhol's new record early at a dive bar near you; get moved by BodyVox's big collaboration with A-list non-dancers; tune in to an opbmusic session with the Thermals; meet Oregon's new poet laureate and more. BodyVox Brings Its A-Team - 1:01The dance company BodyVox does not do normal, choosing instead to push boundaries of genre and form. So how are they pushing forward with their new performance, “The Pearl Dive Project”? How about asking eight top-tier artists to choreograph for them. Only thing: none of the artists are actually dancers. Instead, they're folks like Pink Martini singer China Forbes, Oregon Symphony music director Carlos Kalmar, and visual artist Malia Jensen.Elizabeth Woody Names New Oregon Poet Laureate - 9:40Governor Kate Brown has appointed Elizabeth Woody as Oregon’s next poet laureate. Her mandate: to represent the poetic powers, to encourage the reading and writing of poetry, and to be our mirror, reflecting on public life. Woody’s maternal family is part of the Confederated Tribe of the Warm Springs, but she was born on the Navajo Reservation — among her father’s folks — and identifies as Buddhist. Pioneer Mall Shows Its Galleries the Door - 14:45For the past several years, one of downtown Portland’s most unusual art hubs in has been on the top floor of the Pioneer Place Mall. Mark Woolley Gallery, People’s Art of Portland, Artist in Residence Gallery and One Der Gallery have lured the art walk crowds past J. Crews and Forever 21s and up escalators to take in fine art in a building where skill and quality is generally associated with Louis Vuitton. Now, mall management has informed the galleries they need to make way for a new commercial tenant by the end of April.opbmusic Session with The Thermals - 16:28The Thermals’ newest release, “We Disappear,” dives deep, exploring concepts of love, loss and technology’s role in both. Of course, the dark subject matter doesn’t mean Hutch Harris, Kathy Foster and Westin Glass have ditched their penchant for writing fun, catchy sing-a-longs, like “My Heart Went Cold.” What Can Portland Learn From San Francisco? 24:14What are we supposed to make of what’s happening in the Bay Area. Is it a cautionary tale of what could happen as Portland’s Oregon’s growth keeps surging? Or a preview of things that are definitely coming, no matter what we do? We sit down with Gil Kelley, San Francisco's citywide planning director who formerly directed Portland’s Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, to talk about his unique view on how the city's compare.Beverly Cleary Turns 100 - 36:58We are celebrating a huge 100th birthday for a true Oregon original: the one and only Beverly Cleary. Mrs. Cleary’s books, featuring Ramona, Beezus, Henry Huggins, and other kids, helped invent what we understand today as children’s literature, and remade the rules for how girls are represented in books. While she was at it, she brought a slice of Northeast Portland’s Klickitat Street to vivid life for people all over the world. We listen in on part of Cleary's conversation with Oregon Art Beat in preview of Art Beat's half-hour special, "Discovering Beverly Cleary."Chris Arellano - 44:20In Albany and Corvallis, people know Chris Arellano as a music teacher and guitarist.
