Reasons to Rejoice is a five minute window each day where we lift our eyes to God and revel in who He is! Advent can be a frantic time and often one where it's hard to feel near to God. Why not join with us to celebrate the goodness of God each day for 25 days? We don't want to dismiss the challenges of our world, but we do want to celebrate the King who came to the manger and now sits in glory. Let's dedicate ourselves to rejoicing in Him this Christmas.

Meeting Yourself Again for the First Time with China Forbes

Someone Gets Me Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 21, 2021 42:18

It's another awe-inspiring episode from the Someone Gets Me podcast as I share the screen with China Forbes, the lead singer, and songwriter of the band Pink Martini. A gifted multi-potentialite, China's exceptional talents, coupled with her rich life experience, is truly a story worth telling (and made into a movie!) Tune in as she shares her journey of what it's like pursuing many passions, enrolling at Harvard University, where she juggled visual arts, acting and singing, and even finishing as cum laude. China's life shows us how music is a source of hope, how it takes courage to focus on giving your gifts to the world, and the importance of accepting that the good and the bad things in life don't last forever. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ A musical genius making beauty from sadness. China's unusual childhood, her mother and father, divorcing when she was five, and the many struggles after that are depicted in a movie her sister made called Infinitely Polar Bear, starring Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana. Such was the backdrop as China grew up and made it through with the help of art, music, and her eternal optimism for life. ✔️ She is releasing the song "Rise," which she wrote for her Pink Martini bandmate, Derek Rieth. "I just felt like my words did not succeed in helping him, but I felt that they could help someone else who was struggling with suicidal thoughts. I've been sitting on it for six years, but it's now coming out; I do believe that this song will help many people." ✔️ There is still more to be done by the singing sensation, and she has this to say to fellow creatives: "You need not care what anyone thinks. It would be best if you dedicated time every day to do your craft. Trust that no one else is you and don't compare yourself to others, and you need to get the focus off of yourself because self-consciousness is paralyzing. Ask yourself, how do I give my gifts to the world?" ✔️ China recently co-written Pink Martini's two latest hits, including "The Lemonade Song," approaching 2 million streams on Spotify alone. This soaring anthem of orchestral pop, written on either side of a breakup, celebrates the strength we all have to persevere and survive and learn to love our lives. It describes each individual's Full Circle: the power each of us has to steer our lives in the direction we want to go, a direction that will end up back where we started, but as a different person each time we come around. China Forbes was born and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she graduated cum laude from Harvard and was awarded the Jonathan Levy Prize for acting. She appeared in New York regional theatre and Off-Broadway productions, earning her Equity card alongside future stars of stage and screen such as Norm Lewis, Peter Jacobson, and Rainn Wilson. Soon after college China formed and sang with her first band. They regularly performed at NYC clubs CBGB's Gallery, Mercury Lounge, and Brownies. Her first solo album Love Handle was released in 1995, and she was chosen to sing "Ordinary Girl," the theme song to the TV show Clueless.   In 1995, she was plucked from New York City by Harvard classmate Thomas Lauderdale to sing with Pink Martini. She has written many of Pink Martini's most beloved songs with Lauderdale, including "Sympathique," "Lilly," "Clementine," "Let's Never Stop Falling in Love," "Over the Valley," and "A Snowglobe Christmas," which can be heard on Pink Martini's holiday album Joy to the World. Her original song "Hey Eugene" is the title track of Pink Martini's third album, and many of her songs can also be heard on television and in film. She sang "Qué Será Será" over the opening and closing credits of Jane Campion's film In the Cut. Her original song "The Northern Line" appears at the end of sister Maya Forbes' directorial debut Infinitely Polar Bear, released in 2015 by Sony Pictures Classics.   With Pink Martini, Forbes has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Later with Jools Holland. She has performed songs in over twenty languages. China has sung duets with Michael Feinstein, Jimmy Scott, Georges Moustaki, Henri Salvador, Saori Yuki, Faith Prince, Carol Channing, and Rufus Wainwright, among others. She has performed in venues from Carnegie Hall to Red Rocks, the Sydney Opera House to the Grand Rex in Paris. She released her second solo album '78 on Heinz Records in 2008, a collection of autobiographical folk-rock songs. She has recently co-written Pink Martini's two latest hits, including "The Lemonade Song," approaching 2 million streams on Spotify. — The reality is, from a young age I started building the idea of this perfect human based on what I had seen, been taught, read, and heard and just allowed it to get more complicated over time. Once we reached the age of social media, it got a lot worse. What I learned was nobody is perfect. Because I spent so much time beating myself up about my life choices, I lost sight of all of my admirable qualities. I've learned to ask for feedback and appreciate the opportunities for growth provided through those conversations. What matters is that you are continually to work on being the best person you can be and treating yourself, and others, with kindness every step of the way. Valeria Teles interviews Carrie Thompson — the author of “Anxiety Diary of an Ordinary Girl.” Carrie Thompson is a CPA, Mental Health Advocate, and the Author of Anxiety Diary of an Ordinary Girl.  Diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in 2016, Carrie spent time exploring the world of mental health and educating herself on the causes and the cures. She is passionate about helping others and aspires to change lives by bringing awareness to the importance of mental health through sharing her story, expanding others' knowledge, and connecting with them. FOX, NBC, and CBS have featured Carrie, and she has contributed to Thrive Global, and other websites and various podcasts have interviewed her. In addition to reading and writing, she enjoys fitness and baking. She loves to spend time with her family, friends, sweet kitty, and Albie. Carrie Thompson is currently a CPA working in regulatory reporting with a passion for numbers but an even greater passion for helping people. In 2016, she was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Since then, she has spent time exploring the world of mental health and educating herself on the causes and the cures. Because of the isolation, she felt initially, the more she learned, the more she shared and spoke up about the importance of monitoring our mental health. During a self-discovery period, she decided to combine her love of reading and people with her newfound knowledge and experience. Writing a book to bring more awareness to the importance of mental health and the commonality of having a mental health disorder just seemed like the perfect fit. Anxiety Diary of an Ordinary Girl releases February 10th and is already an international bestselling book. Carrie aspires to work within the mental health industry and has enrolled in a life coaching certification program that she believes is the next step to achieving that goal and helping more people struggling with their mental health. “I Haven’t Written My Favorite Song Yet” Mike Viola has written some of my all-time favorite songs. But the Massachusetts-born singer/songwriter tells me in this interview that what keeps pushing him creatively is that he hasn’t written his favorite song yet. Viola's musical career began when he was a teenager, playing in a hard rock band that garnered some pretty serious regional attention, including opening for Todd Rundgren and Joe Perry of Aerosmith. Viola’s solo career started with an EP in 1985 and since then he’s put out nearly 25 albums of some of the most perfect pop music you’ll ever hear. He’s produced for everyone from Ryan Adams to Fall Out Boy, recorded with Shania Twain, The Monkees, Jenny Lewis and Rachel Yamagata and he’s written tracks for and with Matt Nathanson, Mandy Moore, and John Wesley Harding. Along with his buddy Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne, Viola wrote and co-produced the Oscar Nominated title track for the 1996 Tom Hanks film That Thing You Do. Viola also wrote must for the film Walk Hard and Get Him To the Greek and he currently is the VP of a and r over at Verve Records. Viola’s new album Godmuffin is a thing of wonder. Filled with songwriting finesse and masterclass pop phrasing, it might very well be his best effort yet. From ruminative tracks like "Ordinary Girl" to the aching grind of “Creeper" to the bluesy pop ripple of "Drug Rug," on Godmuffin Viola has proven once again that he’s a practically peerless songwriter who knows how to land a hook better than anyone I can think of. Godmuffin is the album that we needed in 2020 to remind us that there are still good things in their world. In this conversation, Viola talks about his love of horror movies and monsters, giving up his ticket to see Randy Rhodes, parenting during a pandemic and memories of hanging out in L.A. with Dan Bern.

Ro has been dubbed the “Annoyed Optimist”. She’s New York on the inside and California on the outside. People bother her…a lot. Ro isn’t one to hold back on her opinion of the public, while sharing how life is different with her 6’7 giant husband all while trying to prepare to have a family, because there’s definitely material with kids right?? Take a break from normal people life and check out Ro!
