It's 1963, and both Hollywood and the UK were starting to poke at the boundaries of film censors. First off, the best picture winner, England's Tom Jones, in which the title character tries to win his lady Sophie (whoa, She's a Lady), but can't resist saying "What's New Pussycat" to any woman with a come hither look. Our special guest, Video Vulture John Tebbutt, explains to Claire, Erin, and Dan that It's Not Unusual to find the appeal may have shifted since the Sexual Revolution. Speaking of sex and revolution, the people flocked to see Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra, twice the runtime as 1934's version but with much more exposed Cleo. Twice as long, twice as flashy, an hour longer than it needed to be, Dan knows it as "Zack Snyder's Cleopatra," and it managed to be the year's biggest hit while still almost bankrupting the studio. Two protagonists sexing their way through their legends, but who did it best? Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

Today we'll hear Rick Rubin talk to one of his all-time favorite vocalists, Tom Jones. With his soulful baritone and unique interpretation of the American R&B and gospel, Jones became a mainstay at hip venues in London, New York and Las Vegas with now-timeless hits like “It's Not Unusual,” and “Green Green Grass Of Home.” On today's episode, Tom Jones shares stories with Rick from his remarkable career, including the first time he met Elvis on a movie set in Hollywood—and the night he turned down an invitation to join Little Richard on stage out of fear he'd be deported. Tom also talks about why he thought Burt Bacharach's lyrics to “What's New Pussycat” were a joke the first time he heard them. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey welcomes back Vidar Hjarding MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands to re-start his regular Connect Radio audio described theatre reviews with his first visit back to a live theatre performance in almost 2 years. Vidar's first trip back to the theatre was to see the audio described performance of ‘What's New Pussycat' at the Birmingham Repertory   Theatre on Wednesday 10 November at 7.30pm with live audio description by Julia Grundy and Caroline Smith.  What's New Pussycat  is a musical, comedy theatre production Written by Tony Award winning, Joe Di Pietro which marries  the classic Henry Fielding novel The History of Tom Jones.  and the iconic songs of Sir Tom Jones, to relive the delicious excess of London's in the swinging sixties. Set in 1965, ladies' man Tom Jones arrives in London with a broken heart, but he also has big dreams and a big voice. He quickly discovers an exciting world of mods and miniskirts, dancing and decadence, but most of all…incredible music. Romance and adventure await, but will Tom ever be reunited with his one true love, who seems more interested in designing for Carnaby Street than in being Mrs. Tom Jones?  Vidar began by explaining to Toby what it was like for him going back to the Birmingham Rep in almost 2 years and the joy of being back in the theatre seeing a live audio described show. If the rumours are true that What's New Pussycat will be hitting the London West End stage in 2022, then Vidar would certainly recommend going to see an audio described performance of the production for a trip to London's West End. Vu ?Elle a joué Feydeau, Sweig, Shakespeare. (Clive Donner, 1965). What the Riff?!?

This week we introduce you to the debut album from a 24 year-old lad from Wales.  Thomas John Woodward - today Sir Thomas John Woodward - is better known as Tom Jones. He got his start as the front man for a beat group called Tommy Scott and the Senators, but they really didn't go anywhere beyond South Wales.  Gordo Mills became his manager, took him to London, and renamed him Tom Jones after the Academy Award winning film of the same name released in 1963.Jones' first hit would be the one for which he is always remembered.  "It's Not Unusual" went to number 1 in the UK within a month of its release, and it went to number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 when released in America.  Mills and Les Reed worked quickely with Jones to get an album out to take advantage of the quick success, and the result is this album - Along Came Jones.  Jones would have only moderate success with the rest of the songs on the album, but would see more fame when he recorded songs from movies, including "What's New Pussycat," by Burt Bacharach, and the theme song to the James Bond film "Thunderball."Tom Jones is synonymous with Las Vegas, and he spend a good bit of time there almost from the beginning.  His first stint was at the Flamingo in 1967.  He made a lot of money in club performances in Vegas rather than in extensive recording.  After moderate success with his first few albums, Mills directed Jones more in the direction of the crooner we know today. We hope you enjoy this early foray into this iconic singer. I've Got A HeartThis is the opening track on the album, and a very positive song.  The boy is singing about having "a heart that really needs somebody, " and "a mind to keep her, to hold her tight, oh yeah, yeah, yeah."  Not the most sophisticated lyrics you will encounter, but it is early in the rock era after all..Whatcha Gonna DoThe album was a mix of cover songs and songs written for Jones, and this is one of the covers.  Originally written by American blues and rock singer Chuck Willis, it cautions against running around on your girl. The RoseGordon Mills wrote this song for Jones.  It is basically the knights errand to win his love by finding the rose of love.  "For my true love I yearn, but I'll never, ever return till I find where that red lady grows."It's Not UnusualThis is where it all started for Tom Jones.  Gordon Mills and Les Reed wrote this song which was released in February 1965, and it entered the charts the week it was released.  It was number 1 on the UK charts a month later, and would define Tom Jones' career. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:What's New Pussycat?  by Burt Bacharach (from the motion picture What's New Pussycat?)Woody Allen's first screenplay would become this comedy film.  Peter Sellers and Peter O'Toole starred in this movie.  Tom Jones would achieve success from singing this song for the soundtrack as well. STAFF PICKS:I'll Keep Holding On by The MarvelettesRob starts off our staff picks with this female Motown act.  They were the first successful Motown act after The Miracles.  This song was written by Mickey Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter, and peaked at number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The original members were  Gladys Horton,  Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman, Juanita Cowart Motley, and  Wanda Young.  Young is on lead for this one.Help Me Rhonda by The Beach BoysBrian brings us a well known surfing standard and rebound song.  This song has guitarist Al Jardine on lead vocals, and Glen Campbell was playing lead guitar as a session musician.  Darryl Dragon (aka The Captain from Captain & Tennille ) is also playing on this track.  Take a Heart by The SorrowsWayne's staff pick is the title track off the debut album from “Freakbeat” band The Sorrows.  One of the most aggressive R&B bands of their time, The Sorrows were known for their fast guitar solos and thudding drums.  They never achieved much success, perhaps because their style of music was just ahead of its time.  The song itself cautions against breaking hearts and turnabout.Feeling Good by Nina SimoneBruce's staff pick is a song from Broadway recorded by Nina Simone in 1965.  It was not released as a single at the time, but has seen a resurgence recently in period pieces and commercials. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In) by the T-BonesThis instrumental drew its inspiration from an Alka-Seltzer commercial and was recorded by Dave Pell and members of The Wrecking Crew.

On Thursdays, Magenta reads from her second book, Madame Magenta and the Arcati Killer. Madame Magenta and the Arcati Killer is a detective novel told from the point of view of its eponymous heroine, a woman of flexible morality, an array of tasteful turbans, and an unfortunate case of genuine mystical powers. As it happens, Magenta's damnable abilities play little part in her day-to-day business as a psychic and medium for the North London area. Genuine esoteric insight would be more than her clients could handle, so generally-speaking she sticks to platitudes and incense to earn a living. Much to her irritation, this doesn't stop ghosts, angels and every loudmouth in the animal kingdom from interfering in her personal business. As if this wasn't troublesome enough, someone's going around bumping off London-based PSYCOWs (Psychics, Occultists, Wytches), and a dog named Bobo has just told her who's doing it. Magenta has little option but to pass the information onto her contact in the police force, Detective Inspector Eldris, before embarking on a little sleuthing of her own. In the process, she must reassure her husband Bernard that she's not having an affair with Eldris, babysit a ghost called Gaynor, and avoid the clutches of an old enemy who has recently been released from a terrorist detention centre. Will she live to tell the tale?! Yes. Yes, of course she will. Wouldn't be much of a comedy if she snuffed it. Support this podcast

This week on LADY’s After Hours, fashion and cultural historian Laura McLaws Helms meets with fashion designer Vicky Tiel. Vicky Tiel started designing clothes as a pre-teen before studying fashion at Parsons in New York. Alongside her college friend, Mia Fonssagrives, she moved to Paris at age 20 in 1964, where they quickly became the toast of the town. Snapped up to be costume designers on the film ‘What’s New Pussycat?’, they met Elizabeth Taylor at the studio—she became a client, friend and investor in their company. Mia-Vicky opened their first store in 1968 at 21 Rue Bonaparte; Vicky maintained a shop in that location for over four decades. Tiel married Elizabeth Taylor’s makeup man and spent several years traveling the world with the Burtons, while also designing youthful fashions that captured the essence of the “Swingin’ Sixties.” She went on help establish the couture salon at Bergdorf Goodman in 1981 and design the red ball gown Julia Roberts wore in ‘Pretty Woman.’ For the last few years, Tiel has focused on her perfume lines, which she primarily sells on HSN. A natural confidante, she provides advice for women on love, life and beauty. Full of enthusiasm, Vicky is a delight—she’s an intriguing mix of a keen businesswoman, a hopeless romantic and a great girlfriend that you want to dish all your troubles to.
