Welcome to the Live Damn Well podcast. My name is Jorge Roman, author of Return to Human. My goal with this project is pretty simple: in a world which has become increasingly divisive and polarized, I want to bring you a balanced perspective of health. To deliver on that promise, I’ll seek out experts with conflicting opinions to tackle the topic of health from as many angles as possible, in order to to make this podcast into an amazing resource for anyone looking to improve their health. Are you looking forward to growing old?For most people, I can imagine the answer is likely a resounding no. In fact, only around 40% of Americans are looking forward to old age (https://www.statista.com/chart/17019/looking-forward-to-old-age/).I was recently in Costa Rica (thus "Jungle Talks"), where I met a pretty remarkable man who made me look forward to old age. Why? Well, I was close to Nicoya which is a well known Blue Zone––a hotspot of longevity, with a disproportionate amount of healthy centenarians. Though this humble cacao farmer I met doesn't technically qualify as a centenarian (he's 93 years old), he's pretty damn close. As a friend and I stepped onto his property, a frail-looking, fairly short elderly man greeted us with a machete in hand. I immediately saw that he was mentally sharp, as he cracked joke after joke with an aliveness in his voice which is often absent from elderly people.Though his age in itself is impressive, his physical health was equally, if not more impressive. So naturally, we asked him his secrets to a long, healthy, and fulfilling life. For scientific references and resources check out the shownotes at: https://livedamnwell.com/defy-agingIn this episode I cover:What this Costa Rican man does to support his longevity from diet and sleep to mindset and communityWhat the long-lived Blue Zone populations have in commonWhy a rice and beans diet isn't the be all end allHow emotions influence gene expressionWhat does the scientific research say about anti-aging and longevity practices?––––––––––––––––––––––––––ReferencesMindfulness meditation and the immune system: a systematic review of randomized controlled trialsWhich is the Most Reasonable Anti-aging Strategy: Meta-analysisNutrition and longevity - From mechanisms to uncertaintiesThe Influence of Social Hierarchy on Primate HealthDecreasing Lean Body Mass with Age: Challenges and Opportunities for Novel TherapiesHuman longevity is associated with regular sleep patterns, maintenance of slow wave sleep, and favorable lipid profile––––––––––––––––––––––––––Get 25% OFF your first order and a FREE gift when you join Thrive Market! #21 A Nutrient-dense Superfood for Immunity, Heart Health, and Inflammation with Catharine Arnston

We often hear the word superfood thrown around, whether or not it actually is "super" (kale, I'm looking at you).In today's episode, my guest Catharine Arnston, CEO of EnergyBits and speaker, sheds light on a little known food which I believe does indeed deserve the title of superfood. Packed with B vitamins, vitamin A, iron, and chlorophyll, chlorella and spirulina are two amazing plant foods which are some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet, other than organ meats of course. After Catharine's sister was diagnosed with cancer, Catharine searched for dietary interventions to help strengthen her sister's immune system while she underwent chemo (she's now fully recovered). Through her intensive deep dive into the scientific literature, she came across two foods endorsed by the United Nations and NASA as the most nutrient-dense foods. Years later she founded EnergyBits, a third party tested, sustainable, organic, and carbon-negative company which sought to make algae available to as many people as possible. So, regardless of whether you're Paleo, Keto, Vegan, or still following the Standard American Diet (SAD), these two types of algae can be very beneficial for anyone looking to upgrade their nutrition, athletic performance, sleep, and immunity. In this episode we cover- A battle with cancer and Catharine's search for a nutritional intervention- Why the United Nations and NASA endorse spirulina and chlorella as the most nutrient-dense foods and the answer to world hunger- Why most Americans are NOT getting the micronutrients we used to get from food just a few decades ago...- How Spirulina and Chlorella are being studied as a nutritional strategy to lessen severe cases of COVID-19 and treat patients- How EnergyBits Spirulina and Chlorella can fit into nearly anyone's lifestyle to improve their health––––––––––––––––––––––––––Get 20% off Chlorella and Spirulina using code livedamnwell at www.energybits.com––––––––––––––––––––––––––Links to Catharine Arnston and EnergyBits- https://www.energybits.com- Social media: @energybitsStudies ReferencedStudies Referenced in podcastEffects of spirulina on weight loss and blood lipids: a reviewProspective options of algae-derived nutraceuticals as supplements to combat COVID-19 and human coronavirus diseasesPotential of Chlorella as a Dietary Supplement to Promote Human HealthA randomized study to establish the effects of spirulina in type 2 diabetes mellitus patientsRole of Spirulina in the Control of Glycemia and Lipidemia in Type 2 Diabetes MellitusLight-harvesting chlorophyll pigments enable mammalian mitochondria to capture photonic energy and produce ATPSpirulina in Clinical Practice: Evidence-Based Human Applications––––––––––––––––––––––––––Learn simple, free ways to reduce stress, support immune function, and calm the nervous system by downloading chapter 2 of my book "Return to Human" FREE: https://mailchi.mp/ab3797c37d7d/live-damn-well-mobile-landing-page––––––––––––––––––––––––––NOT medical advice; not intended to treat, cure or diagnose; this video is merely for educational purposes. Looking into the past gives us a lens through which to view our present, especially in terms of what humans "should" be eating as a species. But looking into the past is not a panacea––in other words, it's not as simple as: let's just eat what our Paleolithic ancestors ate. Dr. Schindler joins me on the podcast to discuss two critical questions to ask ourselves: What foods were we designed to obtain? What foods were we designed to digest?Dr. Bill Schindler is the founder and director of the Eastern Shore Food Lab, an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Archaeology at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland and the costar of the National Geographic series, The Great Human Race, Curiosity Stream's, The Modern Stone Age Family and Wired Magazine's series, Basic Instinct and Food Science. He is a food archaeologist, primitive technologist and chef. Bill travels the world documenting traditional food ways and works to draw inspiration from the deep archaeological record, diverse ethnographic record, and modern culinary world to create food solutions that are relevant, meaningful, and accessible today. His work specifically focuses on HOW we should eat instead of simply the type of food we should eat for optimal health. Bill is a strong advocate of traditional foodways and is constantly seeking new ways to incorporate lessons learned from his research into the diets of modern humans including his own family.
