This episode features an interview with Alison Lange Engel, CEO of Ceros, a company that provides tools and services that empower companies to create interactive content with unparalleled ease and efficiency, driving customer engagement. In this episode, Alison discusses the power of interactive content and how to differentiate your brand amidst increasing noise. She and Ian dive into the importance of being unique and how creativity is a competitive advantage. Key Takeaways:Creativity is a competitive advantage, even more so as copying assets gets easier with AI. CMOs need to get their teams off the treadmill and make space for creativity, inspiration and ideation. The sea of sameness is real, especially in B2B, and the world continues to get noisier. You have to disrupt and have conviction behind your big bets; check box marketing won't cut it anymore. Originality is as important as ever, but teams have to find ways to do more with less and won't succeed if they are only trying to differentiate themselves through words, tone, or processes.Quote: You're going to miss the opportunity to differentiate and tell a unique story, right, if you have your team on a treadmill constantly. And that's how most people feel. But, as a leader, you've got to create space for it and find inspiration. Encourage your team to bring ideas. We would bring magazine clips in. People would bring in their pets. People brought in old, you know, pictures, family mementos, what matters to them. You've gotta get to the heart and soul of what you're trying to do to kind of unlock your team and have your company, you know, feel fresh, feel modern, and have people take risks, right? Great companies take risks and you have to kind of create that environment to do that. The brands that don't, are in trouble and the brands that do are the ones that win.Episode Timestamps: *(05:50) The Trust Tree: Experiences over static content*(25:36) The ROI of creativity*(36:29) Advice for CMOs on creativity and boldnessSponsor:Pipeline Visionaries is brought to you by Qualified.com. Damian Kulash of OK Go discusses his evolution from punk music fan, working with Dischord records, and creating boundary-pushing music, vinyl packaging and viral videos Topics Include: New album "And The Adjacent Possible" available for streaming now. Discussion about physical media's role in OK Go's output. OK Go primarily known for videos that "live in the ether." Damian was into physical record packaging during college years. First record was Herbie Hancock's "Rockit," bought at Tower Records. Young Damian damaged the record trying to scratch like DJ. Later played with Herbie Hancock at Obama's 50th birthday party. Musical journey from hip-hop through Prince, Beatles, Led Zeppelin. DC punk scene was influential, with bands playing in cafeterias. Started Level Records at age 15,with funding from Dischord Records. Ian MacKaye lent teenager Damian money to start label. Level Records produced 7-inches and compilation CDs for friends' bands. College made running a record label difficult for Damian. Studied art semiotics at Brown University. Worked as NPR radio engineer and Photoshop retoucher after college. Indifferent to Napster's rise during OK Go's early days. Band finances operated like "roadrunner off the cliff" cartoon. Discussion about gift economy model working for the band. Belief that making things you love matters most, not success. Music sometimes gets overshadowed by video's visual impact. Videos gave OK Go longevity beyond typical radio-hit bands. New album theme explores Stuart Kaufman's "adjacent possible" concept. OK Go doesn't have unified sound; band is "like a mixtape." Treadmill video was originally made for "nerdiest fans" only. Videos aim to create real events that connect with viewers. Physical pressings of OK Go albums are costly in secondary market. New vinyl features elaborate pop-up sphere in custom packaging. Hidden track on second album deliberately blocked copy-protection software. Record label "Paracadute" means parachute in Italian. Ten-year album gap wasn't intentional; life and pandemic happened. Directed "The Beanie Bubble" film with his wife for Apple. Film directing different from making music videos; less adrenaline-driven. Video production typically takes 3-6 months from concept to completion. Some video ideas abandoned when technology made them commonplace. Trends aren't growing the fitness industry—they're just keeping it spinning. Despite all the buzz and innovation, only 20–30% of people consistently work out. And that number hasn't moved in decades. In this episode, Barry and Shay unpack what they call The Trend Treadmill—the cycle of constantly chasing what's hot in hopes of staying relevant… and why it's not working. If you're ready to stop chasing trends and start building something grounded, magnetic, and truly transformative—this one's for you. Inside, we'll cover: Why trends don't expand the market (and what actually does) What your clients are really looking for when they come to class How to make any format feel like the perfect vehicle for transformation Why your beliefs—not your workout method—are the foundation of a powerful brand What it takes to create experiences that build loyalty, retention, and real results If you're ready to step off the treadmill and lead with purpose, press play.

In this solo episode, I unpack the sneaky psychological pattern known as the 'hedonic treadmill' - the reason we feel amazing when we hit a goal, and kinda flat not long after. We discuss why we keep chasing the next shiny thing. Why our wins wear off so fast. Why happiness doesn't keep up with our progress. Why and how our brains adapt to both the good and the bad. Why contentment often feels just out of reach, and - most importantly - what we can actually do about it all. This episode is part neuroscience, part psychology, part philosophy, and part practical. If you've ever wondered why success can still feel unsatisfying, or how to find more meaning between the wins, this episode is for you. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We took off our armor for this incredible episode! The main discussion might have been one of our most important (and fun) ever: the Big Alta 50k DNF, failure, and what it truly means to go for it. David raced Big Alta because it was somewhere that he couldn't hide. We needed to gather data about what happened at the very edge of human capabilities. And when you F around...sometimes you find out. We hope that you feel a connection to your big scary dreams. Thank you for giving us the courage to dream bigger! And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: racing lessons from Big Alta, why ankles are annoying, guys v. dudes, running your own race, Jim Walmsley dominates at Chianti, Kilian is going to Western States, sauna v. hot tub, going from 0 to 1 to 2 kids, running groups, bike v. treadmill, core work, life "balance" for people with big goals, long-term training builds, and lots more. This episode gives you a raw window into the true story that athletes rarely tell. Send us a textBreaking free from the endless pursuit of goals that never seem to satisfy—that's the challenge we tackle in this thought-provoking episode about the hedonic treadmill. This psychological phenomenon explains why we quickly adapt to achievements, with happiness returning to baseline levels shortly after reaching our goals.Remember that promotion you worked tirelessly for? Or the fitness milestone that consumed your training for months? Why did the thrill fade so quickly, leaving you asking "Is this it?" The answer lies in our psychological wiring. We're designed to acclimate to changes, both positive and negative, as a survival mechanism—but this adaptation can rob us of lasting satisfaction in modern life.Throughout our conversation, we explore practical strategies to break this cycle. Rather than falling into the "never enough" mindset where accomplishments are immediately diminished by comparison, we discuss how to cultivate genuine gratitude for your progress. The key distinction between extrinsic goals (external achievements) and intrinsic goals (deeper purpose) can transform how you experience success. As Nicholas brilliantly puts it, pursuing endless achievements without appreciation is like "running after wind"—chasing something you'll never catch while missing the journey itself.Whether you're building a business, transforming your fitness, or pursuing personal development, this episode offers actionable insights to help you experience more sustainable happiness. Stop diminishing your victories with "but" statements that erase your pride, and start celebrating how far you've come before setting new horizons. Ready to step off the treadmill and find more lasting fulfillment? Scientists determined that Lucy, a human ancestor from 3.2 million years ago, couldn't have beaten modern humans in a foot race. Also, the Chinese AI company DeepSeek startled industry observers with an efficient new system. But how does it compare with the leading tech? How Lucy, Our Famous Ancestor, Runs On A Virtual TreadmillLucy is one of the most famous fossils—an Australopithecus afarensis who lived about 3.2 million years ago. Her skeleton is about 40% complete, and has been studied since its discovery in 1974. In a quest to learn more about what Lucy's life may have looked like, scientists estimated what her leg and pelvic muscles were like based on her skeleton. They then put her on a treadmill—virtually, of course. The findings? Lucy was likely not a natural runner, and the modern human body evolved for improved running performance. Host Flora Lichtman talks to Producer Kathleen Davis about these findings, and other news of the week.Flora also speaks to Anil Oza, a Sharon Begley Science Reporting Fellow at STAT and MIT, about the latest news on the Trump administration taking down scientific data from the Centers for Disease Control website for mentioning topics like gender, DEI and accessibility. They also discuss the National Institutes of Health resuming grant reviews after two weeks of restrictions imposed by the president. How DeepSeek's AI Compares To Established ModelsThe Chinese company DeepSeek recently startled AI industry observers with its DeepSeek-R1 artificial intelligence model, which performed as well or better than leading systems at a lower cost. The DeepSeek product apparently requires less human input to train, and less energy in parts of its processing—though experts said it remained to be seen if the new model would actually consume less energy overall. Will Douglas Heaven, senior editor for AI at MIT Technology Review, joins Host Ira Flatow to explain the ins and outs of the new DeepSeek systems, how they compare to existing AI products, and what might lie ahead in the field of artificial intelligence.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
