On this episode of Heard Tell, we turn down the noise of the news cycle and get to the information we need on Canada being all over US news and politics. But instead of talking about Canada amongst ourselves, let's try something different and talk to Canada and the politics and economics thereof with Sabine El-Chidiac, Canadian Policy Associate for the Consumer Choice Center and an actual Canadian. Sabine and host Andrew talk through the background of the current headlines going back to the first Trump administration, how political upheaval and looming elections affect Canada's position, how the Canadian government works and the politics American's and the world need to know and understand, and the economic crisis that is the undertow to many other problems facing Canada right now. Also, Sabine gives some things to watch for in news coverage coming up, and answers the question "Could Waffle House bring peace between our two nations?"All that and more on this episode of Heard Tell.Read more from Sabine at CCC here:https://consumerchoicecenter.org/team/sabine-el-chidiac/CCC's tariff explainer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBkEuD4wJDY&t=1433s--------------------Heard Tell SubStack Free to subscribe, comes right to your inboxhttps://heardtell.substack.com/Questions, comments, concerns, ideas, or epistles? A week after their Mar a Lago dinner what was actually accomplished by the Trudeau-Trump dinner? Is Canada now dancing to the Trump tune or is there a chance for a meaningful all-Canadian approach to dealing with the new President and his agenda? Bruce and Chantal join in for their assessment of the new top line item on the Ottawa political calendar.
As the stories keep getting leaked about what really happened at the Trump Trudeau dinner last Friday night in Florida, a new one has emerged. Apparently Trump joked (was it a joke?) that Canada could always join the United States as the 51st state if it felt it was being so unfairly handled on trade issues. Really? Not that old line again. That and a lot more on an "end bit" collection of stories for this Tuesday.

In the latest episode of The Line Podcast, recorded on Nov. 8, 2024, Matt Gurney and Jen Gerson provided viewers and listeners with the scintillating experience of a sustained bout of silence, because they have no idea what to say.Like, they also talk and stuff, but, like, wow. Right? This episode of The Line Podcast is brought to you by Unsmoke Canada. Canada can be a global leader in reducing the harm caused by smoking, but it requires actionable steps, including giving adult smokers the information they need to choose potentially less harmful alternatives. Learn more at Unsmoke.ca.First up: a chat about the vibe. The feels. What they are thinking and feeling since the decisive electoral victory of Donald Trump over Kamala Harris this week. They take a look at the latest available numbers, and note the broader societal and political trends that they speak to. They discuss Trump's failures as a human being, and why the Democrats still somehow managed to convince 75 million people that they were fine, or even virtues. They talk about history, and how it feels when one age transforms into another. It's all very uplifting.Next: they zoom in on Canada, and speculate about what's next for us. Trump won't have Canada at the top of his shit list, but we might not be all that far from the top, given how Justin Trudeau and his government have made many public comments about Trump that we suspect the president-elect remembers. We talk about how Canada actually (and sincerely!) excelled at adapting itself to a global order that is now dead, and how we should have begun hedging our bets years ago. But we didn't, so now we need to adjust right now, all at once. And we aren't sure the Trudeau government will survive the G-forces such a sudden pivot is going to create.Last up, and still on the topic of a changing world, your hosts note with alarm and sadness the pogrom in Amsterdam this week. And they add it to the list of things that Canadian officials ought to be worried about, but don't seem to be.All that, and more, in the latest episode of The Line Podcast. Like and subscribe! There was some pretty awkward tension at the NATO summit over the weekend, stemming from a hot-mic video that has surfaced of a conversation between Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, in which they seem to be ridiculing Donald Trump. The video, and Trump's response (calling Trudeau two-faced and leaving the summit) underscore some of the challenges NATO faces today. Our guests are David Perry, vice-president of the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, and Deborah De Lange, a professor in the Global Management Studies program at Ryerson University.
