Welcome back to another episode of Tank Talks! This week, Matt Cohen and John Ruffolo dive deep into the economic and innovation headlines shaping Canada's future, from the shocking collapse in domestic VC funding to Bell's billion-dollar bet on AI infrastructure, and Mark Carney's latest power move that might just redefine Canadian politics.* Is Canada's startup ecosystem on life support?* What Bell's AI supercluster plan means for data sovereignty and why it might be too small, too late.* Mark Carney's political chess game: A shift to the economic right?* Jim Balsillie's warning about crypto, open banking, and the end of Canadian monetary independence. This is one episode where politics, venture capital, and emerging tech collide. Let's dive in.Vancouver's Web Summit Debut: A Promising Start, But Room to Grow (00:00:42)Matt shares his experience from Web Summit Vancouver, highlighting a surprisingly dense tech scene and global founders living in B.C., but the event suffered from a lack of promotion and branding blunders.John's take: Good signs of energy on the West Coast, but Vancouver still needs to establish itself as a recurring VC destination.Canada's VC Crisis: A System on the Brink (00:04:30)BDC and CVCA reports reveal domestic early-stage VC activity has plummeted to a five-year low. U.S. capital, once Canada's cushion, is drying up too.John's take: The system is at a critical point. Without a strong local VC backbone, Canada risks losing its tech future. The warning signs are clear and urgent.Risk-Off Era: Are VCs Getting Too Cautious? (00:08:14)Fundraising is down, LPs are nervous, and timelines are stretching. Despite great founders, Canadian VCs are playing defense, not offense.John's take: It's fear, not fundamentals. This is the exact moment when bold investing should happen. But anxiety from capital pools is paralyzing the ecosystem.Bell's AI Supercluster Gamble: Bold or Too Small? (00:12:40)Bell Canada plans six new AI data centers, but can they compete with the U.S.'s Stargate megaproject?John's take: We're betting small while others bet global. Sovereignty is good, but if we're not exporting Canadian tech to the world, we're falling behind.Jim Balsillie's Crypto Challenge: Canada Must Move or Be Left Behind (00:16:08)Balsillie urges the government to adopt open banking and stablecoins now or risk being sidelined in the new global financial order.John's take: Canada was ahead in crypto once. If we don't act now, we'll lose our influence over the next generation of monetary infrastructure.Mark Carney's First Power Move: Is the Economic Right Back in Style? (00:18:51)Carney appoints Marc-André Blanchard, ex-UN ambassador and CDPQ executive, as chief of staff. It's a clear signal he means business.John's take: This is a big-league move. Blanchard's background shows Carney is building a serious, economically focused leadership team.VC Fund Stakes on Sale: Crisis or Opportunity? (00:21:05)LPs like Yale and Harvard are dumping VC fund positions at steep discounts. Secondary market activity is exploding.John's take: It's concerning, but also an opportunity. Discounts of 60%+ could generate strong returns. Still, the pullback from emerging managers could choke off future innovation. If you're a founder, investor, or policymaker, this is essential listening. Canada is at an inflection point, and this episode helps you understand the stakes.Connect with John Ruffolo on LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/joruffoloConnect with Matt Cohen on LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/matt-cohen1Visit the Ripple Ventures website: https://www.rippleventures.com/ This is a public episode. À quoi on s’attend? Allen Hall: Big news, Innergex Renewable Energy has announced that it will be acquired by CDPQ. A major community and pension fund manager for about $13 and 75 cents per share. I've seen a couple different numbers about that. This transaction represents a total enterprise value of approximately 3.6 billion US dollars, and marks a really a substantial consolidation in the wind industry. The deal offers about a 40% premium on interjects closing share. Of a couple months ago. So that's a pretty good premium that CDPQ put on interjects value. And now Phil, this is part of a larger play of a lot of consolidation. This one in particular, interject is going to become a private company after this acquisition. Why? Phil Totaro: It, that's an interesting question because normally when a company gets taken private by a large institutional investor, it's to restructure. I am not sure that. Innergex needs that much restructuring per se. It's not like they've got a huge team to begin with. But a reasonably competent team in terms of the pedigree of their developments, obviously in Canada and throughout Europe as well. And they've been trying to venture off and dip their toe in other markets as well. The reality of this is that it, it's a fantastic thing for CDPQ to strengthen their position and it comes at a point in time when a lot of these Canadian pension funds are looking at the profitability and the returns that they're seeing on their investments globally, including the US right now with all the trade tensions and everything we've got. And I think you're gonna see more of these Canadian. Pension funds and investors pulling back and doing things that are ignoring the US at this point. Looking at deals in Canada, looking at deals in Europe, looking at deals in Southeast Asia and South America for that matter. Joel Saxum: I think it makes sense for me like CDPQ keeping their Canadian money mostly in Canada. However, I know Innergex has a hand small handful of wind farms in the United States as well. Did you see a reality where just because of geopolitical reasons, they might just. Sell those couple of wind farms off. Phil Totaro: Let's put it this way, Brookfield's not going anywhere and they're always on the hunt for, good assets. But there's other people that could want to gobble up wind assets right now, especially if, the assets that Enerex owns in the US they're not quite ready for repowering yet. But maybe that's part of the play. Joel Saxum: Moving forward. Yeah, I know, like you said, you mentioned Brookfield. Brookfield, same thing. We're talking about market consolidation. They just bought National Grid renewables not too long ago, and I know National Grid renewables in the States. A couple, A handful of wind farms and some solar assets, some other things. So yes, continuing to see that trend.

Welcome back to Sustainability Street, our podcast on the intersection of commercial real estate and the world we live in. Therese Fitzgerald's guest for this episode is Ethan Elser, executive vice president of PACE Equity LLC.  The Commercial Property Assessed Energy Program, otherwise known as C-PACE, was launched 15 years ago to provide property owners with low-cost, long-term financing for sustainability and efficiency improvements, with borrowers repaying their loans through a special tax assessment.   But the program was still pretty niche until the pullback in capital—first during COVID-19 and then when interest rates spiked—sent borrowers looking for creative financing solutions. Today, C-PACE can be found in an increasing number of borrowers' capital stacks and the project sizes are getting larger. Meanwhile, on the investor side, the ESG-driven program has caught the attention of some of biggest names in real estate like Nuveen, CDPQ and Carlyle.  As the capital markets loosen, can C-PACE's streak continue? Elser thinks it can.   "There's actually 40 cities around the country—most major metropolitan areas," he said, "who all have higher standards and then fines if you're not complying with certain emissions criteria. And so, we're seeing more interest in C-PACE being a solution for that. I think that'll be a bigger part of the marketplace going forward." Here are some of the topics Elser and I covered: • Esler's journey to sustainable finance (2:03) • C-PACE explained (4:17) • Simultaneous objectives (10:08) • 38 separate C-PACE programs (13:11) • Busting myths about C-PACE (15:54) • The future of C-PACE (22:22)

Renewable energy major, Masdar, is joint venture Infinity Power and partner Hassan Alam Utilities have signed a land access agreement with the Egyptian government for a massive 10 gigawatt onshore wind project. The deal provides the consortium with over 3, 000 square kilometers of land in West Suhag to conduct necessary studies and surveys to advance the project. When completed, this wind farm is expected to generate nearly 48, 000. thousand gigawatt hours annually, reducing Egypt's carbon emissions by 9 percent and helping the country achieve its 42 percent renewable power target by 2030. It could also save Egypt an estimated 5 billion per year in natural gas costs. Phil Masdar, once again, doing amazingly large projects. Philip Totaro: Yes, and this thing is going to involve a significant amount of investment. And Mastar's the type of company that hasn't shied away from sourcing turbines from China, for instance. So this could end up being a big deal for Envision or Goldwind. Egypt right now has, I think about 1. 6 gigawatts of wind operational, pretty much all along the the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. But this is, taking advantage of an ample amount of space that still exists out there and reasonably close proximity to to Cairo, where I think a lot of the power will end up getting piped into. Fantastic news, again, to see, in general development in Africa. And we'll see how this evolves in terms of, what they line up as far as the supply chain players that are going to be a part of this. Joel Saxum: If I was to recommend anything to anybody from Mazdar in the development phase or Hasan Alam in these, in, while they're planning this, Do a really good study on leading edge protection because you're going to need it. Philip Totaro: Sand and wind turbine blades don't mix. Allen Hall: Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Goldwind Technology has completed its acquisition of a wind turbine factory in Brazil from General Electric. The plan has been idle since 2022 when GE had left the company. Brazil by producing turbines at this facility, Goldwyn can meet local content requirements set by Brazil's largest financing bank, BNDES enabling wind farm developers to secure long term financing. Goldwyn plans to begin mass production at the factory by the end of 2024 and aims to capture 25 to 30 percent share of Brazil's new wind turbine market in the coming years. Phil, a lot of moving pieces in Brazil at the moment with a Goldwyn entering and GE and others exiting Brazil. Philip Totaro: There are. But Brazil's a bit of a challenging market at this point. Going out, and like most people, you know, if you want, you need to go out and talk in front of an audience, et cetera, that was really tough. And so I always had to push myself along the way, and I think it's particularly true for a lot of women in roles where they kind of go, you know, I'll just kind of keep on the sidelines and be a little bit quiet. You have to push yourself out there. So was that a personal challenge for me? Yes. I think I've kind of got over that, I actually enjoy doing sessions like this with you and sharing experiences and so on. But that I think was a personal challenge for me. Just pushing myself to be more out there.”*”People need to know what their roles are, to be clear about what their roles are, to understand how they contribute to the overall organization. And that means being able to communicate regularly on what our goals are, how we're advancing on them and how their part fits into that. And that allows our people to feel valued, to feel recognized. And, that's a big part of what drives folks. And for people who manage others, it's also taking the time to understand what drives everybody. Because what drives you, Daniel, may not be what drives me. I may give you a huge raise, but that's not really what you're looking for. I mean, you'll take it. You won't say no, but you may actually want different recognition and other people are the total opposite. So it's really understanding, having that personal interaction with people, I think that's really important for us, for example, as well, it's being able to ensure alignment and closeness around our offices globally. That was one of our big challenges.”Time Stamps*[02:53] Maarika's path into finance*[06:56] Unforeseen obstacles in Maarika's career*[09:53] Segment: Cash Crossroads*[13:31] Deploying new strategies when investing*[19:53] A CFO's thoughts on inflation*[21:27] New tech and automation in financial reporting*[24:40] Segment: The Playbook*[30:41] Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) in financial analysis*[38:28] Segment: The Report from the Future*[43:52] Implementing a Chief Liquidity Officer?*[45:02] Maarika on AI replacing people in the future*[47:10] Viewing competitor CFOs as industry peersSponsorThe Invisible Vault is powered by the team at Kyriba, the global leader in cloud treasury and finance solutions, empowering CFOs and their teams to transform how they activate liquidity as a dynamic, real-time vehicle for growth and value creation.
