This week, we took over a high school homecoming, and let me tell you, after hearing about the DJ disaster they had last year, I knew I had to swoop in and save the day. Last year's guy played all the wrong songs, capped the night with Mamba—which, I mean, why? So, they canned him and called in the pro (yours truly). The kids? They had a blast. I'm talking, Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield brought the house down. You know you've hit the right note when an entire room of teenagers collectively loses their minds two seconds into a song. Then came Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson, because obviously, you can't go wrong with early 2000s anthems at a 2024 homecoming. These kids? They get it. Who knew? But, let's get to the meat of this episode. We're in the final stretch, people—the 2024 election is less than 20 days away. And let's be real, nobody has any idea who they're voting for. We've got Zaddy Trumpets out here spinning his usual “policies” (read: nonsense). He's supposed to be answering questions at a town hall but ends up playing DJ with his summer playlist while people literally pass out from heat exhaustion. Instead of answering questions like a normal candidate, he's out here doing the YMCA for 40 minutes straight. I mean, what are we doing? But the highlight? Trump's diving into crypto now—yep, you heard me. He's promoting some sketchy token called “Liberty Financial.” Look, if you're feeling adventurous, go ahead and dump your entire savings into it, but I wouldn't recommend it (not financial advice, wink, wink). The best part? You can't even withdraw your money until the “scheme”—I mean, system—decides you can. Yeah, read the fine print, folks. Meanwhile, Elon Musk is jumping on the Trump train, donating millions and becoming Trump's new bestie after they were practically enemies a few weeks ago. Musk is now campaigning in Pennsylvania like he's the freaking Director of Government Efficiency, which is a real job title Trump invented just for him. Honestly, the whole thing is starting to feel like a crossover episode of The Apprentice and Shark Tank. And if all that wasn't enough, we've got Ice Cube dropping new music—yes, that Ice Cube. The man who hasn't rapped in forever decided now is the time. I don't think anyone's listening to it, but hey, props to him for trying. Exhibit's also crawling out of retirement with a new album on a record label run by… wait for it… Conor McGregor. Yes, because when I think “music mogul,” I totally think “MMA fighter.” What are we doing? Oh, and shoutout to Dasani. They're back with a new formula—now without salt. Yes, that's right. The selling point for water is that it finally doesn't have salt in it. What a groundbreaking concept. Welcome to 2024, people. That's it for this week. It's all a mess, and I'm just here trying to make sense of it. If you haven't subscribed to the YouTube channel yet, what are you even doing? See you next week for more chaos. You probably don't know his face or his voice, but you definitely know his music. In this episode of 'Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs', hosts Brittany Spanos and Rob Sheffield take a deep dive into iconic songs like Britney Spears' “…Baby One More Time” and the enigmatic writer-producer behind them: Max Martin, the Swedish genius responsible for so many hits of the past quarter-century. Martin has always been an elusive figure, remaining behind the scenes. He refuses to become any kind of celebrity, yet he has helped create so many classics, from Taylor Swift's “Blank Space" to the Backstreet Boys' “I Want it That Way” (both featured on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs list). In this episode Brittany and Rob aim to shed light on the mysteries of Max Martin: How does he do it? What's his secret recipe? How can one mastermind keep creating so many hits, over so many years, without losing his magic touch? How does he have so many famous songs, while remaining out of the spotlight? This week our hosts are also joined by a Rolling Stone legend, Senior Writer Brian Hiatt. The trio go deep into how Spears made “…Baby One More Time” into a classic debut single and how Kelly Clarkson turned "Since U Been Gone" into a classic break-up anthem, all while exploring the long and unique career of pop's ultimate mystery man.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's that time of the year when the beats get bolder and the nights longer, perfect for some serious dance floor action. This year's mix is a rollercoaster of emotions and energy, starting with a mind-blowing mashup of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" and Beyoncé's "Summer Renaissance." It's a track that's more than just a song – it's a celebration, a nod to the legends who've shaped our world. Diva classics are getting a fresh circuit anthem makeover too. We're talking about Kim English's "Unspeakable Joy" and Tove Lo's "Habits," reimagined in a way that only true circuit anthems can. And Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" is hitting the circuit anthem scene with a new energy that's both nostalgic and exhilarating. But wait, there's more – we're talking about diva collaborations that are nothing short of legendary. Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus on "Wrecking Ball"? Yes, please! And Dolly Party and Beth Sacks giving us their unique spin on the mashup of 4 Non Blondes classic "What's Up" – it's like rediscovering these songs for the first time. Cher, the queen herself, is gracing our holiday circuit anthems lineup with not one, but two tracks. Her "Angels In the Snow" and "DJ Play a Christmas Song" are getting the circuit anthem treatment by Dirty Disco and Guy Scheiman, and they're bound to be the highlight of your holiday season. And for the grand finale, we've got a circuit anthem remix of Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas" that's so good, it'll make leaving the dance floor the hardest goodbye. The AI Factor in Music We can't ignore the significant role AI is playing in the music scene today. It's reached a point where AI-generated voices are singing tracks they might never have touched, including those by artists no longer with us. A prime example in our latest set is the AI rendition of Dua Lipa performing the Wham! and George Michael classic, "Careless Whisper," remixed by Henriq Moraes. The remix is impressive, but it's clear that AI still has a way to go in perfectly capturing an artist's unique vocal style. This phenomenon is widespread online, with music labels actively removing many of these AI-generated tracks from YouTube. The issue? Rights holders aren't seeing the revenue from these streams. This emerging trend is something artists and their representatives will need to address in future contracts. The situation brings to mind certain "Black Mirror" episodes – specifically "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" and "Joan Is Awful." In these stories,

This week, DJ Louie is joined by music journalist and co-host of the podcast Legends Only, Bradley Stern, to discuss the original American Idol, Kelly Clarkson! First, Louie and Bradley discuss Kelly's legendary run on Idol, from being deemed “forgettable” by Simon Cowell to winning the show and America's hearts in a landslide victory, her display of down-home affability and incredible versatility on the show, equally adept at Motown as she was at rock, show-tunes and pop ballads, her first album, 2003's Thankful, which played up her chameleonic and powerful vocal talent but played down her singular personality to middling results, how she fought tooth and nail to take more control of her artistry on her juggernaut second album, 2004's more rock-oriented classic Breakaway, and calcified her on-record scorned-by-resilient persona on its signature hit, the iconic kiss-off anthem “Since U Been Gone”. Louie and Bradley then cover Kelly's legendary and very public battle with label-boss Clive Davis over her third record, 2007's largely self-penned My December, her mea-culpa for that defiance, 2009's All I Ever Wanted, how Kelly eventually reached a detente with the powers that be in the 2010s and unlocked a very successful second decade of her pop career, and how all the qualities that made us fall in love with her twenty years ago as a cocktail waitress with a big voice and a dream on Idol lead to a third wave of her career as a beloved daytime talk show host, as well as to her viral covers series, “Kellyoke”. Finally, Louie and Bradley rank Kelly Clarkson in the official Pop Pantheon.  Check out Louie's Kelly Clarkson Essentials Playlist on SpotifyJoin the Pop Pantheon Discord!Follow DJ Louie XIV on InstagramFollow DJ Louie XIV on TwitterFollow Pop Pantheon on InstagramFollow Pop Pantheon on TwitterFollow Bradley Stern on Twitter

DJ Louie is joined by author of The Song Machine and New Yorker staff writer John Seabrook to discuss the greatest pop producer auteur of the modern era, Max Martin. Louie and John discuss Max's roots in Sweden and why the country is such a historical breeding ground for world-class pop music. They then discuss Max's initial run a hitmaker in the late ‘90s, crafting the sound of the teen pop boom with Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, and *NSYNC, his reinvention in the mid 2000s with his protege Dr. Luke on pop-punk hits like Kelly Clarkson's “Since U Been Gone”, the duo's continued, chameleonic radio dominance in the early 2010s with Katy Perry, Britney, and Kesha, and Max's latest wave of success adding his glisten to the work of already-established superstars like Taylor Swift and The Weeknd. Finally, Louie and John debate the secret to Max's unparalleled success and what his future looks like now that new stars prize authenticity over his patented brand of airtight pop perfection. A Day to Remember is one of those bands that so delicately danced between the lines of pop punk and beatdown hardcore, and it spurned lots of conversations and heated debates as to WHAT this band actually was. But in 2007, on some B-sides on a re-released album called For Those Who Have Heart, the band reminded as all that at the end of the day, almost everything is just pop when they released a BLAZIN’ cover of Kelly Clarkson’s Since U Been Gone. Not only did they expertly record a cover that was very true to the original with the perfect amount of their own fingerprint across the song, they also released a music video with a similar vibe… true to the original, and uniquely excellent. In recent years, oldies radio stations have inched further into the future - and have begun to focus on favorites from the '70s (and even '80s) rather than from the '50s and '60s. So we wondered, forty years from now - in 2052 - will songs of the '90s, '00s and '10s make it onto oldies radio? What will be in heavy rotation - and what will be left off of the playlist? We ask Chris Molanphy - author of the "100 & Single" Billboard charts column in the Village Voice – and we talk with Scott Shannon - who was, back in 2012, a WPLJ host and creator of the syndicated radio network The True Oldies Channel - about the state of oldies today.  Check out Chris Molanphy's playlist (chronological listing): Twenty songs we’ll still be hearing on oldies radio in 2052 by Chris Molanphy (In chronological order by original release) 1. Sir Mix-a-Lot, “Baby Got Back” (1992) – This hit was underestimated by critics in ’92, compared with Arrested Development’s “Tennessee” (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 1) 2. Pearl Jam, “Yellow Ledbetter” (1992) – An example of how classic-rock acts are eventually remembered for a song that wasn’t their biggest radio hit. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 97) 3. Radiohead, “Creep” (1993) – Still their U.S. biggest hit, and though they’ve recorded greater albums this is still most likely to be in rotation decades from now. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 34) 4. Snoop (Doggy) Dogg, “Gin and Juice” (1994) – Because a great line is a great line, and “With my mind on my money and my money on my mind” is a great one. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 8) 5. Mariah Carey, “Always Be My Baby” (1996) – She was the biggest pop star of the ’90s, but a lot of her hits got burned out long ago; this one hasn’t. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 1) 6. Sublime, “What I Got” (1996) – Because bros and stoners, like it or not, are going to have a new “The Joker”/”Slow Ride.” (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: N/A—Airplay chart peak No. 29) 7. Blur, “Song 2” (1997) – Sports will still be the way we hear a lot of pop songs. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: N/A—Airplay chart peak No. 55) 8. Backstreet Boys, “I Want It That Way” (1999) – Great song; but also the Chinese brothers’ lip-dub (2005) was one of YouTube’s first viral videos—the future of hits. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 6) 9. Eminem, “Lose Yourself” (2002) – He won an Oscar for it, essentially because it’s this generation’s “Gonna Fly Now”/“Eye of the Tiger.” (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 1) 10. Coldplay, “Clocks” (2002) – Every generation has its easy-listening songs. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 29) 11. The White Stripes, “Seven Nation Army” (2003) – Because you can’t stop a good bassline, even when it’s actually played on a guitar. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 76) 12. The Postal Service, “Such Great Heights” or Yeah Yeah Yeahs, “Maps” (2003) – One of these will be the “Just Like Heaven” of our era—the hipster love song. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: N/A, No. 87) 13. OutKast, “Hey Ya!” (2003) – Burned out in its heyday but will probably never die. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 1) 14. Kelly Clarkson, “Since U Been Gone” (2005) – It will be the Millennial generation’s “sass anthem,” akin to “Respect” or “I Will Survive” (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 2) 15. Gnarls Barkley, “Crazy” (2006) – Because of its malleability as a song; decades hence it might be a folk classic. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 2) 16. Rihanna, “Umbrella” (2007) – It’s the lyrics: beneath its hip-hop exterior lie the bones of an old-time, sentimental love ballad. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 1) 17. Beyoncé, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” (2008) – Weddings alone guarantee this a permanent hit-parade spot. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 1) 18. Jay-Z, “Empire State of Mind” (2009) – Rap’s Frank Sinatra ensured himself decades of royalties with his own Yankee-game-worthy perennial. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 1) 19. Lady Gaga, “Bad Romance” (2009) – Its nonsense lyric is “wamp-baba-lula” worthy; its video is a classic. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 2) 20. Taio Cruz, “Dynamite” (2010) – I’ve never met a kid under 10 who doesn’t love it, and they will all be in their fifties in 2052. (Peak on Billboard’s Hot 100: No. 2)

This week, I'm sharing a track called "Elephant In The Room" from my upcoming album, which should be out this fall. Most of the time when I write songs, I start off by playing something on the guitar or piano, then come up with some sort of melody on top of it, then add lyrics. This song is a little different, in that I had the melody in my head and come up with lyrics before I even picked up a guitar. Then, I kind of figured out what the chords were gonna be after the fact. I think because of this, the melody is a little stronger than some of my other songs. I always thought the phrase "elephant in the room" was sort of funny expression. The image I get in my head of an actual elephant is sort of cartoony like dumbo or something and I thought it made an interesting phrase for a song. I think most of us can relate to being in awkward situations where people sort of pretend things are normal when they aren't. I also liked the idea of using other phrases that have both a literal image and metaphorical meaning so I say things like "sitting on my hands" and "holding my tongue" and "getting under my skin" - phrases that we say all the time but don't really think about literally but they all kind of fit with the theme. As I thought more about the arrangement for the studio recording, the Kelly Clarkson song "Since U Been Gone" came to mind. I specially like the guitar strums and drum machine at the beginning and how big and catchy the chorus is. That was sort of the idolized type of pop arrangement I had in my head. I quickly realized I don't really have the vocal power to pull it off plus the production was a bit outside my usual territory. As worked on it, it sort of morphed into sounding a bit more like Nada Surf. With those two influences in mind, I think I was able to come up with something fairly catchy that both fit my vocals and stayed true to my sound. Visit jakehaws.com for more info
