The acclaimed crime drama Tokyo Vice on Max follows American journalist, Jake Adelstein (Ansel Elgort.) As a reporter for a large Japanese newspaper in the 1990's, he dives into the dangerous world of the Yakuza, the Japanese organized crime syndicate. The series is based on the book and real life experiences of Jake Adelstein, who named his memoir Tokyo Vice as a wink to the 1980's show, Miami Vice. Michael Mann, creator of Miami Vice, was interested in the show and came on board to executive produce the series and to shoot the pilot. Producer and director Alan Poul joined the Tokyo Vice team later into the development process. “I was aware of Tokyo Vice because of course I had read Jake's book when it came out,” says Alan. With a college degree in Japanese literature and a background in Japanese cinema and theater, Alan began his film career in Japan when director Paul Schrader hired him as an associate producer on Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters. The movie Black Rain, directed by Ridley Scott, quickly followed for him, but Alan didn't want to become known as “the Japan guy” in Hollywood. He built his career producing episodic television for shows like Tales of the City, My So-Called Life, Six Feet Under, and The Newsroom. But Tokyo Vice creator J.T. Rogers knew they needed someone with experience in Japanese production, language and episodic television, so Alan was asked to join the project. “It represented a kind of full circle closure/homecoming,” says Alan, about going back to produce in Japan. “It doesn't happen very often in one's career and so it became an extraordinarily fulfilling experience for me.” The first season of Tokyo Vice began location scouting in 2019 and shooting began in March 2020- for only 6 days before the pandemic shut everything down. Production resumed in October 2020, and the team had to shoot the entire first season under strict Japanese quarantine and COVID testing rules. As a result, Season One uses tighter shots and fewer locations, with more closeups on Jake and the other characters who shape the story. By Season Two, Alan was excited that they were able to expand the visual range of the show, shooting more of Tokyo and the surrounding area. Alan had the opportunity to direct episodes one and two of the second season. “When I am directing, it is always an incredible joy. At least during those 12 hours I try to let go of all the other hats that I have to wear and just wear the hat that allows me to focus 100% on what is taking place in front of the camera.” Though Tokyo Vice has completed its series run on Max, Alan and creator J.T. Rogers are optimistic about the show's future on another platform. Felicia is joined by Josh Cooley to discuss David Cronenberg's otherworldly adaptation of William S. Burrough's Naked Lunch (1991). A Life in Four Chapters" (1985). God lytting!

Night's biggest defender while talking about Knock at the Cabin Feature Film: We talk about “Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters” from one of our hometown legends Paul Schrader. A very arthouse take on the biopic genre that's only partially as enigmatic as its subject, renowned Japanese author (and uhh… kind of domestic terrorist?) Yukio Mishima. So interwoven was Mishima with his own work, Schrader decided the best way to interpret the man is through his own stories. What results is, well, this. Orange you glad you read this description? Auteurs. Parker. Pennen. Flauw, inderdaad, zelfs voor de Gremlins. Bart laat een film los na tien minuten, Maarten hoopte op meer tiki-taka en Sven had iemand liever wat ingetogener zien spelen en was even in de war door het fenomeen reflectie. Yukio Mishima, a renowned Japanese author whose talents and beliefs stretched far beyond the confines of pen and paper, explored and attempted to transcend what each of us at some point entertains: the limitations of the human experience. How? By ingesting, deconstructing, and reassembling the narrative of his life to create a multilayered and unwavering testament to living and dying as a work of art.   In Paul Schrader’s 1985 biopic, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, the director attempts to capture on screen the many masks, personas, and realities of this controversial figure by revisiting and adapting the pivotal moments that led to Mishima’s infamous final performance. With each layer of reality being vastly different from the next, the viewer is given one piece after another to form a unique and ever-shifting portrait of a human whose obsession with death drove them to encase their life in amber by becoming a sentient work of art.   What role does art play in the history of civilizations? When names are erased and bones are turned to dust, what is left to remember, if anything at all? Symbols, messages, ideas… art as a means of preservation and hedge against the bet; a trump card whose only aim is to test the hand of the dealer whose name is Death.   As always, thank you for listening and we hope you enjoy the discussion.   Where to watch: Criterion Channel (Stream) Amazon (Rent or Buy) iTunes (Rent or Buy)   Instagram: @lefilmpodcast   Twitter: @lefilmpod   Send us questions, feedback, and film recommendations at: lefilmpodcast@gmail.com   01:18 The Dark Story Behind Air Bud 02:08 Biopics: Che (2008), Mesrine (2008), Steve Jobs, Jackie (2016) 05:30 Chernobyl  06:23 Band of Brothers 07:22 Dolemite is My Name 08:54 Molly’s Game 09:43 Mank 10:49 Alexander the Great with Orlando Bloom, Troy 11:12 Glory with Matthew Broderick & Denzel Washington 12:01 Roman Polanski’s The Pianist 15:30 Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters dir. Obsessive, sexually-frustrated and determined to restore honour to a decadent society. But enough about Owen and Ralph, this week they wipe the white splashes off Paul Schrader's ornate biopic of horny militarian Yukio Mishima and ask: is this Hollywood homage edging or hedging?

Lost in Criterion posted its first episode on January 1, 2013. In the 8 years since, we have never looked been less enthused for a movie than we are for this week's film, Yukio Mishima's Patriotism. At worst this should have been an extra on the DVD for Schrader's Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters. At best, this shoddy, self-aggrandizing, dry run for the man's sexual suicide should never have been put in our view. Happy New Year. It can only go up from here.

Paul Schrader makes a visually lovely movie about a man we do not care about whose politics we find abhorrent, and who Schrader seems to have far more empathy for than we can muster.

Only four movies - out of every movie that came out in 1985 - remain in the bracket: Back to the Future, Brazil, The Breakfast Club, and Come and See! Four all-time classics with basically the same plot, but only one can move on and be knighted the movie of the year. If that wasn't enough, we also hand out more Mooty awards, including the awards for Best Actor and Best Actress! Will The Color Purple continue to dominate the awards, despite not being eligible for Movie of the Year (it's confusing...download and listen to find out why that is the case), or can scrappy upstart Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters finally step up, get its hands dirty, and win some gosh darn awards. Come on, Mishima! What is your malfunction? Do you hate awards? Also, The Goonies is eligible for Mooty awards, but I don't see that happening. The long delayed sci-fi film from James Gray, AD ASTRA, finally hit the multiplexes last weekend. The guys weigh in on this endlessly intriguing film. The PICK SIX this week ranks the best FILMS SET IN INDIANA. It's our home state. We had to cross this off the list at some point. DISCLAIMER: At one point during the PICK SIX segment we experience some echo/feedback that continues throughout the rest of the episode. Many apologies, and we hope it doesn't distract too much from the enjoyment of this really, really fun episode. We won't let it happen again. The latest listener commissioned THROWBACK CHALLENGE is quite the doozy. In April's installment of the triple-trademarked Top 3(TMTMTM(NT)), Kevin Krizmanich joins Ted and Ricky to run through their Top 3 movies shown in the Browning Cinema over the course of the last academic year. Kevin throws his support behind Aki Kaurismäki's "The Other Side of Hope" as well as two university-set films: the documentary-genre-bending "American Animals", and Professor Pfinklepfunder's debut film "Monsters University". Ricky's three films include Paul Shrader's "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" (with music by recent Browning Cinema guest Philip Glass), two of the three films on alcohol recovery at Alkali Lake entitled "The Honour of All" Parts 1 and 2, and Boots Riley's "Sorry to Bother You." Ted's picks trace back to last summer with the musical "Hair", Armando Iannucci's latest film "The Death of Stalin", and "Capernaum", a recent nominee for the Best Foreign Language Academy Award. De-Gayed in the Final Draft This week Ryan, Graham and Aidan must face a terrible horror that they've ignored for too long, and is now ready to harvest their souls … But before we talk about James Corden there's Ari Aster's hit debut "Hereditary" - which has been compared to The Exorcist, The Babadook and an obscure 1960s play (although the last one is just us). After whirling through a minority report on "Ocean's 8" faster than Sandra Bullock can rob a clothes store, Aidan and Graham discuss Paul Schrader's masterful reinvention of the biopic "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters". It's a film with some guts, which is more than you can say for its protagonist by the end of proceedings. Stay tuned for a special show coming next week! Thanks for checking in with Eclectica. Starring Nicolas Cage and Willian DaFoe, Dog Eat Dog is the story of when three desperate ex cons are offered a job by a Mexican mob boss, they know they should refuse, but the payoff's too rich to turn down. It's enough to buy their way out of the Life and start over. All they have to do is kidnap the kid of a colleague who's ripping the mob boss off. But the abduction goes awry when the kidnappers are forced to kill an unexpected intruder who turns out to be the child's father -- the very man the mob boss intended to extort. Now unwelcome in the underworld and on the run for murder, the ex cons find themselves as the most wanted fugitives in the City of Angels. And each vows that none of them will ever go back to prison. No matter what the cost. Director, screenwriter Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Cat People, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, Auto Focus, Light Sleeper) joins us totally about his latest film as well as his remarkable career in filmmaking. Paul and I talk about his new film Dog Eat Dog, living in the “sweet spot” of history, why humans have run their course and the recidivist nature of crime.   For more information about TIFF go here.   IMDB Trailer   Synopsis   DOG EAT DOG is a gritty contemporary crime thriller starring Nicolas Cage and Willem Dafoe about a trio of excons, deep in the underbelly of Cleveland, who are hired for a kidnapping.   When the botched abduction goes awry and gets completely out of control, the cons find themselves on the run, vowing to stay out of prison at all costs.   Biography   Paul Schrader is an award-winning screenwriter and film director. Schrader wrote or co-wrote screenplays for four Martin Scorsese films: Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and Bringing Out the Dead (1999). Schrader has also directed 18 feature films, including his 1982 remake of the horror classic Cat People, the crime drama American Gigolo (1980), the biographical drama Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985), the cult film Light Sleeper (1992), the drama Affliction (1997), the biographical film Auto Focus (2002), and the erotic dramatic thriller The Canyons (2013).   Schrader began his career at UCLA Film school and the AFI. He was the film critic for the Los Angeles Free Press, edited Cinema magazine and in 1972 published Transcendental Style in Film, a study of Bresson, Ozu and Dreyer which will be reissued next year in a revised edition of University of California Press.   He teaches occasionally at Columbia university and continues to contribute to Film Comment magazine in New York In 1974, Schrader and his brother Leonard cowrote The Yakuza, a film set in the Japanese crime world. The film was directed by Sydney Pollack and starred Robert Mitchum. The Yakuza brought Schrader to the attention of the new generation of Hollywood directors. In 1975, he wrote the script for Obsession for Brian De Palma.   Schrader also wrote an early draft of Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). One of Schrader's most famous scripts about an obsessed New York City taxi driver was turned into Martin Scorsese's film Taxi Driver, which was nominated for a 1976 Best Picture Academy Award and won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Besides Taxi Driver (1976), Scorsese also drew on scripts by Schrader for boxing tale Raging Bull (1980), co-written with Mardik Martin, The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Bringing Out the Dead (1999).   In 1999, Schrader received the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement from the Writers Guild of America.   Schrader headed the International Jury of the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival. On July 2, 2009, Schrader was awarded the inaugural Lifetime Achievement in Screenwriting award at the ScreenLit Festival in Nottingham, England. Several of his films were shown at the festival, including Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters.   He has received lifetime achievement awards from various festivals, including Gent, Manila, Vallodolid, Stockholm, SXSW, Istanbul, Haifa, Goriza, Mill Valley, San Francisco, Guanajuato.   ----------   For more information about my podcasting, writing and public speaking please visit my site here.   With thanks to producer Josh Snethlage and Mixed Media Sound.   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
