Shownotes写得太累了,这里就不多写了,留两段他在节目里引用和说的话在下面与大家分享: “I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound or stab us. If the book we're reading doesn't wake us up with a blow to the head, what are we reading for? So that it will make us happy, as you write? Good Lord, we would be happy precisely if we had no books, and the kind of books that make us happy are the kind we could write ourselves if we had to. But we need books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us. That is my belief.” "I like movies that show how people attempt to show love, experience joy, make art, or build community in the face of death, grief, and the hardness of being a human living with other humans." — Dave S.(我喜欢那些展现人们在面对死亡、悲伤以及作为人类与他人共同生活的艰难时刻,如何表达爱、体验快乐、创造艺术或建立联系的电影。) 本期提及 第一期和Dave的节目 编号17 Mickey 17 汉江怪物 玉子 冰血暴 Fargo 严肃的男人 A Serious Man 小姐 Fingersmith 色,戒 像这样的小事 Small Things Like These 隐秘的生活 A Hidden Life 秘密会议 Conclave 好家伙 GoodFellas 物质主义者 Materialists 挑战者 Challengers 酷儿 Queer 梦想情景 Dream Scenario 音乐大师 Maestro 饥饿游戏3:嘲笑鸟(上) The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 欢乐时光 驾驶我的车 温蒂和露西 Wendy and Lucy 生活多美好 It's a Wonderful Life 冰风暴 The Ice Storm 丧日少女 Shiva Baby 我以前很有趣 I Used to Be Funny 垫底俱乐部 Bottoms 尸体游戏 Bodies, Bodies, Bodies A Deadly Education 科尔森·怀特黑德 Colson Whitehead 厄休拉·勒古恩 Ursula K. Ep. 241: Kelly Reichardt on Alain Delon, David Lean's Passionate Friends, Recreating Rear Window, and more Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. With a retrospective of Kelly Reichardt's work starting at Metrograph, I had the honor and pleasure of sitting down with Reichardt in one of the Metrograph theaters to talk about... the last things she saw! The director of (most recently) Showing Up discussed a run of Alain Delon movies she saw in the theater—starting with Purple Noon—and also films she uses in her teaching at Bard College, in coursework that involves students re-creating the filmmaking of certain scenes. “American Landscapes: The Cinema of Kelly Reichardt” begins May 11 at Metrograph, screening her first feature, River of Grass, to Old Joy, Wendy and Lucy, Meek's Cutoff, Night Moves, Certain Women, First Cow, and her most recent, Showing Up, plus two shorts streaming on Metrograph at Home. On today's episode, I talk to musician and actor Will Oldham. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, Will was an actor before becoming a musician, appearing in John Sayles' Matewan as a teenager, as well as in films like Old Joy, Junebug and The Guatemalan Handshake, as well as TV shows like Wonder Showzen. In the early '90s, he began playing music as Palace - or more accurately, as different permutations of the name Palace - but a few years later, adopted the Bonnie "Prince" Billy moniker which he's used ever since his 1999 album I See a Darkness. In the last two plus decades, he's released almost two dozen albums, some collaborations with artists like Bill Callahan and Matt Sweeney, and his latest Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You was just released in August on Drag City, and like everything else Will does, it's fantastic! In her eighth feature film, “Showing Up,” Kelly Reichardt takes pleasure in thinking about “life on the level outside of commerce.” Her films often explore working-class characters living life on the margins. Movies like “First Cow,” “Certain Women,” “Wendy and Lucy,” and “Old Joy” have established Reichardt as one of the most fiercely independent filmmakers working today. In this episode, Reichardt discusses how inherently collaborative filmmaking can be, the pleasure she takes in documenting processes, the importance of art schools, and just how frequently André 3000 was playing the flute during production. She also shares some surprising thoughts about where her next film might take place (and it isn't the Pacific Northwest). “Showing Up” is in theaters this Friday, April 7th.

Today I'm talking to 82-years-YOUNG Joy Overstreet about how she uncovered the secret to ditching diets. You could say her journey with dieting started over 65 years ago when summer-camp weight gain let to obsessive yo-yo dieting. After Joy's husband passed away in 1974, she knew something had to change, and that's when she began to discover what she calls the “Cherry Pie Paradox.” Now everything Joy learned is available for all of us to read in a book, so we can free ourselves from constant dieting and the shame and self-judgement we often attach to our weight. In this episode I speak to one of my songwriting heroes, Will Oldham, A.K.A. Bonnie "Prince" Billy. From Louisville Kentucky, Will has over the past thirty years forged a highly distinctive path as one of the great American songwriters of his generation. Recording under various iterations of the name Palace from the early 1990s onwards, before settling on the BPB moniker in 1999, Will has honed a songwriting style drawing on country music, old world balladry and classic rock, always tempered with his uniquely lyrical voice. Along the way Will has collaborated with Johnny Cash, who covered his 1999 classic I See A Darkness, Tortoise, Matt Sweeney, Dawn McCarthy, David Berman and Bill Callahan among many others. Will has also been booed by Bjork fans at the Holywood Bowl, taken the cover shot for Slint's Spiderland and followed his original calling of acting in movies (Old Joy, Matewan), among much else. Will and I discuss among other things his relationship with social media and promotion in general, the three books he read that inspired him around the time he started writing songs, the five mixtapes of Scottish traditional folk ballads that set him on a path toward songwriting, how Will feels about streaming (with some very pointed words for Spotify and its subscribers), and the family circumstances which led to perhaps his most personal album, the self titled “Bonnie ‘Prince' Billy” (2015). We also discuss Will's experience working with Disney, Moana vs Encanto, hunting Octopus, the time Will received a text informing him of an imminent nuclear attack, and why Will is especially looking forward to playing for Irish audiences again soon. Channeling early Y2K alternative rock, Old Joy brings a nostalgic euphoria to the stage just as their name suggests. Reset goes beyond the band with singer Alex Reindl.
Welcome back TWGTF faithful to another rousing round of film talk! This week we take a look back at two movies that were almost candidates for MT. Rushmore spots! Up first is the second feature from Kelly Reichardt with the slow but extremely sad and beautiful Old Joy! Following that we look at the 2013 contribution from the Coen Brothers that may rival any of there films for an opening sequence with the beautiful and thought provoking Inside Llewyn Davis. Spoiler Alert: Though I sound like I'm having a laugh I'm deadly serious about Letto in the big race!

Reeling from a screening of First Cow at Picturehouse Central, Mia and Anna join Orla Smith on Zoom for a chat about all things Kelly Reichardt. Her latest film follows the story of a Jewish chef and a Chinese businessman who set out to make their fortune in 1820s Oregon. The critics discuss the film's tender representation of masculinity, its exploration of American mythologies, and its unique attention to menial tasks. Orla, the executive editor of Seventh Row, gives a background to Kelly's work, and Mia, the director of Birds Eye View, advises on where to start with her challenging movies. Anna is then joined by academic Chrystel Oloukoï, who further delves into the slowness and whiteness of Kelly's work. Discussing the video essay she made on Kelly Reichardt's films, she holds a lens to their indigenous characters and interesting portrayal of settler colonialism. Kelly Reichardt films mentioned: First Cow (2019), Night Moves (2013), Certain Woman (2016), Meek's Cutoff (2010), Wendy and Lucy (2008), Old Joy (2006), River of Grass (1994). Two guys, one dog, a remote hot spring, and some palpable tension. This week’s pick, Kelly Reichardt’s OLD JOY, couldn't be more stripped down, just two old friends going on a weekend trip. And yet, the scenes are subtle and emotionally fraught. There is a lot going on just below the surface. At the end of the weekend it’s not clear that anyone had a good time except for Lucy the dog and maybe Dave and Ashley as they unpack it. Subscribe in iTunes, Android, or Spotify. This week we’re discussing the films of Kelly Reichardt: A24 darling, First Cow (2019) and her second film, Old Joy (2006); both kind and gentle films about male friendship. We talk about their different approaches to depicting male friendship, the allure of micro-budget filmmaking, and heap praise on a beautiful cow and an incredible dog. SPOILER WARNING for both films. You can watch Reichardt's 'Wendy and Lucy' on OVID.tv (in the USA) and make sure to use the promo code ‘DEEPCUT’ for 50% off your first three months! We're also launching a Discord! Come hang out!

Otherwise, not a whole lot going on -- just the usual blend of Americana, country, punk and funk! Album of the Week: Uncle Ben’s Remedy -- Easy Way to Here If you’re looking for some of that rough-and-tumble country punk that’s so hard to find these days, check out Easy Way to Here. There’s nothing but great songs and boot-stomping here. Uncle Ben’s Remedy can part as hard as anybody, but when they want to slow things down and delve into the small tragedies of every day people, they do a fantastic job there, too. The album came out in December, but it’s good a way to start the year as any. And Casey does not do an adequate job of denying this accusation. In addition to all of that, they put First Cow through their proprietary “Fartsy Test.” Patrick recommends a drink pairing. kelly reichardt's First Cow has *finally* dropped on VOD, so we took the opportunity to dig into the works of america's most chilled out filmmaker, from her movies' engagement with leftist activism and histories of colonialism, to the use of weed as a social lubricant in Old Joy, to what her work shares with open world games. in fact, we love kelly reichardt's movies so much that we tried to make this episode *feel* like a kelly reichardt movie.... you just have to listen to hear what that means HOTBOX HOTLINE: 615-592-1003 @ HotboxTheCinema on twitter hotboxthecinema@gmail.com
We recorded this episode back in February and have been anxiously waiting to release it since. On this week’s episode, we had the good fortune to talk with one of the greatest directors of the 21st century, Kelly Reichardt. She is on to discuss the obscure 1967 French film, Pillaged. She also discusses her newest film, First Cow. Kelly takes April through the adaptation process and explains how she made First Cow a unique story from the novel. She also chats about making westerns and utilizing the tropes of the genre. Kelly is a true master of cinema, but she’s also genuinely hilarious. This is one of our most entertaining episodes and one you should not miss. Please consider financially supporting our show by becoming a Maximum Fun member at Maximumfun.org/joinYou can watch First Cow on VOD now.If you haven’t seen Pillaged, you can watch this crappy version on YouTube. With April Wolfe and Kelly Reichardt

If you’re sitting in a dark room with a cattle rancher, a fish biologist and an English professor, watching a sci-fi film shot on a $200,000 budget, chances are good you're at the Eastern Oregon Film Festival.Filmmakers come from all over the country to share their work, listen to Northwest bands, and learn to throw hatchets at artists' brunches — a combination that has landed it on the list of the world's coolest film fests in "MovieMaker Magazine" multiple times. The little fest is playing out for its eighth successive year in theaters and pop-up venues around La Grande, Oregon, and "State of Wonder" is broadcasting live this week from the festival headquarters. The Little Fest That Could: Christopher Jennings And Ian ClarkFrom the minute we arrived, festival co-founders Christopher Jennings and Ian Clark have been running around nonstop, greeting guests, trouble-shooting projectors, setting up bands, serving as walking answer boxes, and more. We get them to sit still long enough to talk about how the festival grew out of a film challenge and learn about how they manage to lure filmmakers from all over to a small town in the mountains of Northeast Oregon. A Man, A Woman, And A Talking Robot Head Walk Into A Desert ...The opening night film is a sumptuous sci-fi fable about a guy, a girl and a robot head hiking across a desert looking for a mythical lake. “Everything Beautiful Is Far Away,” starring Julia Garner and Joseph Cross, premiered this year at the LA Film Festival, where it won the U.S. Fiction Cinematography Award. It’s not hard to see why: filmed entirely in the Imperial Sand Dunes in Southeastern California, the characters wander through hills of white sand against a backdrop of blue sky with colors and lighting so soft and delicate that Garner’s porcelain skin simply glows. The pacing is patient, the dialogue spare, but the whole film is such a potent meditation that when the characters stare straight into the camera, we are more than happy to just lose ourselves in their eyes.We sit down with the writer and director Pete Ohs.The Do's And Don'ts Of Screenwriting With Jon RaymondJon Raymond will be the first to say that he accidentally stumbled into the world of screenwriting. He had just published his first novel in 2004 when a friend of his asked to adapt his short story “Old Joy” into a film. That friend was the director Kelly Reichardt, and that film started a working relationship that took them both into theaters across the world with the award-winning films “Wendy and Lucy,” “Meek’s Cutoff” and “Night Moves.” Raymond also co-wrote the teleplays for the five-part HBO series “Mildred Pierce” with his friend and Portland filmmaker Todd Haynes, which got him an Emmy nomination. He's at the fest for a talk about screenwriting, and we asked him to give us the Jon Raymond Golden Rules.Sara Salovaara And 'Let Me Die A Nun'Directed by Sara Salovaara, the six-part web series "Let Me Die A Nun" bills itself as "the opposing but intersecting trajectories of a lesbian soon-to-be nun, her Jewish stalker, and the object of her affection." We had to have Salovaara on to discuss this contemporary, comedic take on the 70s nunsploitation films (yeah, we didn't know that was a thing either). We also ask Salovaara, a regular writer for "MovieMaker Magazine," to help us understand just what sets the Eastern Oregon Film Fest apart from all the others.Zombie Puppets And Other Furry MonstersPortland filmmaker Jesse Blanchard claims "Frank & Zed" is the world's first puppet movie, which raises the question: How has this never been done before? Is there anything better than puppet-brain-eating puppet zombies? Or fire-breathing puppet monsters and bloody puppet limbs flying this way and that? Festival-goers are getting a first look at this work in progress, in which Blanchard and his Puppetcore Films team lovingly build every stitched eyeball, puppet skull and hurtling ax by hand. Could this be the next cult classic?
Moderated by Emily Perkins. An acclaimed author, Jonathan Raymond is also the award-winning screenwriter behind the courageously minimalistic festival hits WENDY AND LUCY, MEEK’S CUTOFF, OLD JOY and NIGHT MOVES – on which he collaborated with revered indie director Kelly Reichardt. Jonathan also co-wrote the HBO miniseries MILDRED PIERCE, winner of five Emmy Awards, with legendary director Todd Haynes. In this conversation Emily Perkins talks to Jonathan about what risk means to him within the creative process, remaining open to new possibilities while searching for the heart of the material, and finding and investing yourself in the work while truly sharing the vision with your collaborators – in Jonathan’s case two of the boldest auteurs in independent cinema today. Jon's session took place on Sat 24th September, 11am at the Big Screen Symposium 2016 in Auckland, New Zealand. The Big Screen Symposium is New Zealand's annual premiere film event, proudly brought to you by Script to Screen and J&A Productions.
This week we explore Kelly Reichardt's second feature film, Old Joy.
Dario is joined by Neil at the Electric Palace in Hastings once again to screen Kelly Reichardt's poetic road movie Old Joy. A rainy afternoon in a fern-carpeted forest. Two old friends, Mark and Kurt (Will Oldham), drive up into the mountains near Portland, and get lost trying to find the hot springs. Resounding with sustained images and sounds given the time to reverberate, unarticulated tensions course through the film like a hidden creek. Finally at the turn-off to the springs, we see the sky reflected in their windshield and the whole world turns on this moment. The episode also feature's Neil's fascinating interview with all round cinematic mensch Mark Cousins about his new film I Am Belfast.
Guest-free but incredibly happy to return together as we trek into troubled terrain to talk about independent filmmaker Kelly Reichardt. Despite having not seen her very first film or her latest from this year, we feel confident in expressing what we love about the three films of hers that have garnered much acclaim - OLD JOY, WENDY & LUCY, and MEEK’S CUTOFF. In addition, Patrick talks about Linklater’s latest BOYHOOD while I giddily catch up with a lightning round of about 12 films that I’ve seen as of late. 0:00 - 14:50 - Intro / In-House Business 14:51- 15:50 - What We Watched Song 15:51 - 1:06:48 - What We Watched This Week 1:06:49 - 1:07:58 - Director Song 1:07:59 - 2:17:59 - Director Discussion 2:18:00 - 2:27:28 - Top 3 Lists / Outro In two weeks, we return to discuss the controversial work of Oliver Stone, focusing mainly on his earlier films PLATOON and SALVADOR. #35 Old Joy (2006), de Kelly Reichardt by Civilcinema
