True wisdom in the Buddhist sense is not book knowledge, but understanding how things really are. The Buddha was always pragmatic in his approach and sought to get straight to the root of suffering. His vision was embedded in conditioned co-production: awareness that things are always coming into being and passing away, and that there are many conditions in play together. Satyajyoti uses the metaphor of the ocean, with many waves arising and passing away, as a starting point for her reflections on the 3 lakshanas, the marks of conditioned existence. Sometimes It's hard to unlock that chain. In 2013, two lives came together that would set the course that neither party expected. 'A Nation of Hope' Co-founders, Michael and Natasha L. Fuller, both serve populations learning how to cope with the readjustment within a community filled with barriers and unforeseen challenges. They are my guests today on a 'Special Edition' of 'The Bow Knows Who Is Changing the World'. Michael and Natasha certainly are changing the world. Many individuals they encountered were finding themselves lost in the folds of survival, attempting to find purpose, and healing from the aftermath of their past. These individuals had experiences spanning from substance use, displacement from homes, joblessness, gang involvement, separation, and lack of family support. It didn't stop there, however. Realization collided with the founders based on their own life experiences. This revelation has led them on this unplanned journey to reach others by providing services to help unlock opportunities for self-preservation and growth.  This is a journey to build up a nation ready to defeat poverty...mentally and economically. This podcast delves deep into what happens incarceration, confinement, and life behind bars. Join us as we explore the correctional system after the fact, from the walls of the penitentiary and outward. We uncover the harsh realities faced by those in custody and shine a light on the challenges and triumphs of life after incarceration. We navigate the complex journey of reformation, examining the role of correctional facilities, remand centers, and correctional institutions in rehabilitating individuals. With a compelling story and firsthand account, we provide unique insights into the struggles, transformations, and redemption that can emerge from the depths of the cellblock. Join us on this eye-opening exploration as we strive to understand the complexities of life within and beyond the correctional center. Riveting, to say the least. Susan, your host, welcomes Sarah Miller to today's episode. Sarah is a Royal Air Force veteran, turned Physical Therapist Assistant, turned Well-being Coach. She is currently in the process of setting up her own business, specifically coaching people who have unexpectedly lost a loved one and have been part of a traumatic experience. With a fierce passion, she states that her mission is to help people transform alongside adversity.   Through her own experience and interaction with many others in support groups, Sarah has seen first-hand the devastating effect adversity has on a person's way of being, including their health. Whether during the initial crisis or many years beyond, she has repeatedly heard stories from people 10, 20, and 30 years beyond their adversity who continue to live in the shadow of their heart-breaking circumstances. This motivated Sarah to help them through their grief journey.   Key Takeaways: Sarah shares her grief story that began when her daughter drowned. One day you wake up living your everyday life and end your day in a nightmare, we really don't know what comes next, there is no balance or “justice” that is granted. Making peace with your grief is the only effective way to move forward. Sarah shares how it was to live with self-blame and guilt. Sarah highlights the value of recognizing suffering and accepting that vulnerability is part of the human experience. Grief redefines your identity. Sarah talks about how her coaching role developed and became what it is today. Grief impacts all your body systems. It is so easy to neglect yourself when you are grieving. Stop and ask yourself: What do I need right now? Follow four criteria to give feedback: Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it necessary? (and the fourth: is it kind?) Being authentic with yourself is the first step to honoring your needs and accepting your grieving and all the feelings involved in the process.   Resources Tendrilsofgrief.com Email Susan: susan@tendrilsofgrief.com   A Thousand Names for Joy: Living in Harmony with the Way Things Are, by Byron Katie and Stephen Mitchell    Meet Sarah Miller Well Shine Coaching

Susan, your host, welcomes Dean Lambert to today's episode. Dean has worked with funeral professionals for nearly 30 years to help them connect and serve the families facing one of the most challenging moments of their lives: the loss of a loved one. As a father who has experienced the loss of a child, he knows firsthand the grief that clouds the vision needed to honor a well-lived life. Dean is leading The Love Always Project with a team of experienced subject matter experts and people committed to its purpose: encouraging people to think more positively and proactively about end-of-life issues and funeral prearrangement.   Key Takeaways: Dean shares his grief story that started when he lost his son seven years ago. Dean talks about funeral planning. Dean talks about the epidemic of veteran suicide, he explains how death looks to them as a way out of pain. Dean explains what anticipatory grief is about. Is anticipatory grief a blessing or a curse? PTSD is a common diagnosis among caregivers. There are ways to talk about dying without talking about death with someone with a terminal illness. While people are living is the time to talk about life and living, not at funerals. Dean talks about the Love Always Project and its mission. Dean encourages everyone to be consumers of information about something that is hard; death is difficult.   Resources Tendrilsofgrief.com Email Susan: susan@tendrilsofgrief.com   A Thousand Names for Joy: Living in Harmony with the Way Things Are, by Byron Katie   Meet Dean Lambert The Love Always Project Find The Love Always Project on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Interpreting Grief Dreams: Is Our Loved One Trying to Communicate to Us?

Tendrils of Grief

Dr. Joshua Black is a Grief Researcher, Speaker, Consultant and the Host of the Grief Dreams Podcast. As one of the world's leading academic experts in grief dreams, which can be dreams of the deceased, Dr. Black has directed his efforts on raising awareness about this fascinating  phenomenon and how the brain continues to connect unconsciously with our loved ones. Find out more about what grief dreams are, and what it really means when you dream of someone who has passed away in this week's episode.   Key Takeaways: Susan shares some of the recurring dreams she's had of her husband. Sometimes, they are traumatizing.  Dreams are related to processing trauma and unresolved feelings of guilt and blame. What can you do to move forward from these dreams? How can you change your dreams and how can you change the way you process grief? Once you understand these dreams, you can have breakthroughs, and you can have peaceful sleep again. Are these dreams some form of a spiritual connection with your loved one? And do they have a particular message for you? When it comes to these spiritual dreams, if it's comforting to the individual why not maintain that bond and keep on feeling connected.  We need to understand the belief system of each person and how those dreams work within that belief system because some people take dreams as a negative visitation. People should understand that their dreams are a great way of understanding how you're trying to digest and process throughout the day and as we sleep. As you move forward, emotions can be triggered not just because of grief but because of something else happening in your life. The brain is linking these emotions with your grief.  How Dr. Joshua got into this line of work? Dr. Joshua studied dreams because of his father's death. It was the first time he experienced loss. He was broken and shocked by what happened and never stopped grieving until he had a dream about his father.  When Dr. Joshua was able to say goodbye in his dream, something he couldn't do in person, he found peace when he woke up.  Dream rescripting has shown to reduce stress when having negative dreams at any age level. Dr. Joshua helps you write the dreams you wanna have.  When you're stressed, the more likely you'll have negative dreams, but dreams also teach us how to express our love. Dr. Joshua shares a story about dreams and love.    Resources Griefdreams.ca A Thousand Names for Joy: Living in Harmony with the Way Things Are by Byron Katie Dr. Joshua Black

This week’s guest was a real treat for me because of how much I enjoyed his book, The Joy of Not Thinking: A Radical Approach to Happiness. I loved his book because it gave me a practical guide to one of my biggest challenges- Silencing my Monkey Mind. My monkey mind runs in overdrive as I go from thoughts of judging to being hyper-vigilant thinking there’s danger all around me. My thoughts non-sense, most of the time. Do you feel this way as well? If like me, you’ve tried meditation to help you stop thinking, you might be frustrated. Because, as those of us who have tried meditation know, you can never really stop thinking by being still. Tim Grimes is a coach, speaker and writer of multiple bestselling guides on stress management, including "The Joy of Not Thinking" and "Relax More, Try Less." Tim's focus is on simplifying the stress reduction process for anyone who is interested. This week on the show, I’m exploring the 4 pillars of joy: Inspiration, Mindfulness, Action, and Fun. If you’ve been listening awhile, you know that I think of joy as a wayfinding emotion. I have seen joy dance with people, reach out for people, even when they are in their darkest times or most difficult times. Joy can look like a tiny inkling of hope, a little nudge to call a friend or a doctor; joy looks like that second in your life, like several guests and so many of my clients have sited - that you know that there is “more” to your life than whatever your current crappy circumstances are. That you know you want more, desire more, that you personally are meant for more than what you’re experiencing right now.   This week we’ll look at one of the quotes that inspired my show, and I’m going deeper with it around HOW to find more joy. What I’ve seen in the fact that joy is a choice is that there’s more to it. Joy can be lived out in multiple ways. I see that there are patterns in how I’ve danced with joy in my life, and how I’ve seen joy be jump started in other people’s lives. That part is fascinating. I’m focusing on my favorite four patterns today, the ones I’ve started calling the four tenets or four pillars of joy. The four pillars are: 1. Inspiration 2. Mindfulness 3. Action 4. Most people believe in The Way Things Ought to Be. Others embrace The Way Things Are. Arguments, terrorism and war happen at the intersection of these Ways. “Here's what you ought to do.” “That's just not going to happen.” “Okay, then we'll fight.” An even weirder, three-way intersection happens at The Way I Remember It, The Way You Remember It, and The Way It Actually Was. Standing in the reflection of that intersection is like standing in a house of mirrors. My friend Dean Rotbart believes you are three different persons: 1: The person you believe yourself to be. 2: The person others believe you to be. 3: The person you really are. This means there is: 1. the person I see when I look in the mirror. 2. the person you see when you look at me. 3. the person God knows me to be. The Roy I See lives in my mind. The Roy You See lives in your mind. The Roy God Sees lives in God's mind. (I'd like to meet that Roy, wouldn't you?) Sorry, but these are the strange things I've had on my mind this week. If you judge these contemplations to be the disjointed ramblings of an overworked ad man at Christmastime, you will doubtless be correct. But if you discover among these 312 words a worthy nugget to contemplate, and it grows to become a portal in your mind that allows you to see new and wonderful things; well, that's okay, too. Final thought: I was contemplating the word “encouragement” when it hit me: Encouragement happens when a person needs courage… so you give them yours. Your friend was worried and fearful. You had courage, and gave it to them. They were encouraged. What a gift! Encourage someone out there today, okay? People who need it are all around us. Roy H. Williams A

About Byron Katie. www.thework.com Byron Katie, founder of The Work, has one job: to teach people how to end their own suffering. As she guides people through the powerful process of inquiry called The Work, they find that their stressful beliefs—about life, other people, or themselves— radically shift and their lives are changed forever. Based on Byron Katie's direct experience of how suffering is created and ended, The Work is an astonishingly simple process, accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds, and requires nothing more than a pen and paper and an open mind. Through this process, anyone can learn to trace unhappiness to its source and eliminate it there. Katie (as everyone calls her) not only shows us that all the problems in the world originate in our thinking: she gives us the tool to open our minds and set ourselves free. Katie is the author of three bestselling books: Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life (with Stephen Mitchell); I Need Your Love—Is That True?: How to Stop Seeking Love, Approval, and Appreciation and Start Finding Them Instead (with Michael Katz); and A Thousand Names for Joy: Living in Harmony with the Way Things Are (with Stephen Mitchell). Question Your Thinking, Change the World: Quotations from Byron Katie was published in 2007, and Katie's latest book, Who Would You Be Without Your Story?, released October 15th, is now available.
