Amanda Tooley is very passionate about sharing her own story of PCOS that she describes as hell. During her teen pregnancy she went to the hospital for bleeding and pain. She was told she had an involuntary abortion which was very upsetting to her. She said I did not have an abortion. This is when her PCOS was diagnosed. Amanda shared about her 7 years of nonstop biopsies due to precancerous cells. Being given hormones and every type of birth control to attempt to control her excessive bleeding and painful periods. Amanda said hormone imbalance makes a female feel nuts. She said you can see yourself being crazy and you can't stop it. At one point she bled for 10 months because everything the doctor tried did not work. It finally stopped when a good friend took her to the hospital, and they found the right doctor to help. When the bleeding stopped, she was told her uterus was like a spider web due to all the bleeding. Amanda at that point took her health into her own control. She began to educate herself on the principles of Cherokee medicine and was able to heal her body with herbal teas. NOTE: Amanda is sharing her story and not giving you medical advice. She stated: do your research, be very aware that herbal teas can cause miscarriage. Educate yourself and be aware of the things you are putting into your body. Listen to the entire podcast to hear about the children Amanda was able to have. Amanda's words of advice and encouragement: Get the book and look up principles of Cherokee medicine that will give you a base. You are not alone; this is far too common and far too big of a problem. We as women in general have been given the fuzzy end of the lollipop. There is help out there and if you are not comfortable with what your doctor is doing, speak up for yourself. Tell them you're not comfortable, tell them if you do not understand and ask questions. We have to educate ourselves on our own health as women. Be open to talking with your doctor even if what you're talking about is gross to you. It's not to them. Season 1, Episode 2 Healing Plants Use headphones for immersive audio   We know plants are healers, of course. But they're also so much more. They have shaped our history. Just a few centuries ago, they drove exploration, started wars, transformed economies. Today, they are the bedrock of big pharma and traditional medicine empires. We can't fault the modern life-saving drugs that Western medicine has given us. But we wonder if something effervescent doesn't get lost when plants become pills? Kari Stultz was my guest on April 14, 2019 and during our time together we talk about how returning to her roots through an intuitive nudge about foraging brings her joy. She also shares how she has to negotiate with her critical brain to follow her intuition recently when she took 2 years away from her role in the local school division. She also makes the connection how much the energy of others or her environment impact her intuition. Is energy intuition? I think in the context she is speaking about it, absolutely. I believe many people can learn about tools she has incorporates to support her as energy gives her her intuition. Kari “It’s always been that way. And for the longest time I had no idea that that was happening so I would be inundated with this information that I didn’t realize other people weren’t necessarily processing. Once you figure out that that is actually happening to you, it takes a little time to adjust but I think that everything has an energy signature so ya I’m getting an energy signature from people but I’m curious if I’m getting the same information from people as well. If that’s why I have noticed those pieces. I’m not sure. I think I need a little more time to let my critical brain wrap its mind around those things because well you know what I’m like. There’s my intuition piece and my critical brain and they often like fight it out. “Kari “It really comes in as just a knowing. I just have information that I’m not sure how it got there and a lot of the times I even question whether I’ve made it up or if it’s actual information. Now through trial and error I found out a lot of the times it is very accurate. When it just happens I find myself I can be really logical and I find myself fighting with it. That doesn’t make sense. Why do you think you know that? Why is that happening? Why are you responding to that because of something you feel? I’m doing it less now though.”Kari “I think I deal a lot with energy and sometimes it gives me an insight into something whether you want to call that intuition. Some people I guess would. But I think for me it’s pretty energy based. “Kari’s favourite book on her wall of books is A Fine Balance by Rohinton MistryCopy and paste this link to find it on Amazon https://amzn.to/33oCwKb(As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases)Here is the link to her foraging and herbal medicine courses through The Chestnut School of Herbal Medicinehttps://chestnutherbs.com/Plant that helps with PTSD and trauma – Ghost pipe even sitting with helps. Kari's Bio:Kari Stultz is an Artist, Educator, Adventure-seeker and Nature-Lover but feels these are best summed up as a Learner. She is a Teacher by trade and has recently started a journey back to her roots. She also enjoys spending time creating, with her recent focus being on salves, tinctures and tonics. These medicines are created in her kitchen with plants from her garden and from her foraging adventures. Combining these loves with her intuition has been amazing. She lights up just talking about it.

Abena Dove Osseo-Asare‘s wonderful new book is a thoughtful, provocative, and balanced account of the intersecting histories and practices of drug research in modern Ghana, South Africa, and Madagascar. Bitter Roots: The Search for Healing Plants in Africa (University of Chicago Press, 2014) tells the stories of six plants, all sourced in African countries, that competing groups of plant specialists have tried to transform into pharmaceuticals since the 1880s. The leaves and roots and seeds of the book's narrative collectively map the contours of a story that emerges from a crucial and germinal tension: on the one hand, much of the history of the plant sciences in these African spaces is motivated by a race for patents and scientific credit; at the same time, the mobility of plants across the borders of Osseo-Asare's study has complicated efforts to assign priority of discovery to individuals or groups, and in fact challenges the very notion of a “traditional” or “indigenous” body of knowledge in the first place. Simultaneously a carefully situated ethnography and a history informed by a material archive that encompasses pages and petals, the book explores that tension in a critical assessment of what it means to talk about “African” science or “local” knowledge.
