This week, I'm going to talk about a question of what stops people from stepping into the changes that they know they need to make. Many of us don't even try as we are so mired in the notion that we haven't figured out how, that we fear that we're going to start and that we're going to fail. The fear of failure is a genuine human fear. But it also is a fear that is disproportionately found in success-oriented people. "What If It's Possible?" - tune in now to find out how to overcome the fear of failure! In this episode, we discuss: The fear of failure commonly found in success-oriented people. Asking ‘Can I?' followed by “Should I?” But what about “What If It's Possible?' Concerns over appearing selfish when success becomes a benefit to you. Knowing that if you made it to becoming a lawyer, you can absolutely grow your law firm. Allison's Bio: Allison C. Through multi-day intensive business retreats, group and one-to-one coaching, and strategic planning sessions, Ms. Williams advises lawyers on all aspects of creating, sustaining and scaling a law firm business – and specifically, she teaches them the core foundational principles of marketing, sales, personnel management, communications and money management in law firms. We all at some point went through some iteration of that story in order to get where we are right now. But here's the thing. The beautiful thing about being a lawyer and starting a law firm is that if you have the balls to start a law firm, you have the balls to grow it into something amazing. So I want you to ask yourself the question. What if it's possible for me? And then I'm going to answer the question for you.

Today on Brave Men one of America's eminent storytellers, best-selling author Charles Martin, jumps into the middle of the story of Jesus and his disciples. From his acclaimed book, They Turned The World Upside Down: A Storyteller's Journey With Those Who Dared To Follow Jesus, host Paul Cole and Charles walk through the dusty roads of the early church bringing to life the struggles, triumphs and challenges of carrying the message of Jesus to the world. In the first century, a believer didn't just mean someone who heard and agreed with Jesus; it meant someone who acted on that belief. And when the outside world saw the faith of these new believers, they declared “they turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6). This is a picture of brave men. Charles Martin is a New York Times best-selling author of fifteen novels: They Turned The World Upside Down: A Storyteller's Journey With Those Who Dared To Follow Jesus, The Water Keeper, What If It's True?: A Storyteller's Journey with Jesus, and The Mountain Between Us, to name a few. The Mountain Between Us was made into a major motion picture by 20th Century Fox starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba. Charles currently lives in Jacksonville, Florida with his wife and three boys. He spends his free time bow hunting, working out and doing Tae Kwon Do.

Are you feeling unmotivated, less joyful, stressed out, or not feeling like yourself? Have you been told by your doctor that all of your symptoms are due to depression? Were you put on an antidepressant and noticed that it hasn't really helped? Guess what? It may not be depression! There are many other reasons you could be feeling the way you do, and unless your doctor is digging for the root cause then you might be getting misdiagnosed. Dr. Tabatha dissects this super important topic with Dr. Achina Stein, a fellow DO physician and brain health expert. You don't want to miss this episode!Dr. Achina is an osteopathic physician who graduated from UMDNJ school of osteopathic medicine in 1990 and has been in practice as a board-certified psychiatrist for 25 plus years. Her osteopathic roots set her apart from the conventional psychiatrists because of her use of osteopathic philosophy and biopsychosocial treatment approach. Initially on a psychoanalytic track, she became well trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy and CBT and does psychotherapy with a number of people with underlying trauma issues, specifically mood and dissociative disorders. She has much experience using psychopharmacology working with the prison population, community mental health center with the chronic and persistent mental health population, and geriatric psychiatry inpatient population. She understood the limitations of treatment with medication and continually searched for other modalities of treatment. Propelled by her son’s health crisis in 2010, she found functional medicine which resolved all of his health problems as well as her own and since then, has been practicing functional medicine. She is certified by the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine and is a certified practitioner of the Institute for Functional Medicine. Dr. Stein is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and awarded the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award by NAMI-RI in 2008. She has lived in RI since 2000 with her husband and three young adult children. She is presently in private practice in RI and co-owner of Functional Mind, LLC with nurse practitioner, Sally Davidson. This is an exciting time for her, as she recently launched her online health coaching program, HealthySelf Bootcamp, LLC to assist people from a distance to reach their health goals. More than 60 million Americans are affected by mental health issues every year. While the conventional medicine approach focuses on balancing neurotransmitters in the brain through medication, the Functional Medicine approach is to look for the root cause. There’s a saying in Functional Medicine, “fire in the gut, fire in the brain.” If you have inflammation, or dysbiosis in the gut, then it’s going to produce an inflammatory response that in turn affects the brain. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Achina Stein, an osteopathic physician and board-certified psychiatrist. She is certified by the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine and is a certified practitioner of the Institute for Functional Medicine. Dr. Stein has extensive experience working with children and adults who have chronic and persistent mental health problems in the community at large, in the prison population, and in a geriatric inpatient setting. Dr. Stein is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and received the NAMI-RI Exemplary Psychiatrist Award in 2008. She is presently in private practice in Rhode Island, and is the author of the book, What If It’s Not Depression? In this episode, Dr. Stein shares her story of discovering Functional Medicine while searching for answers to her son’s mental health crisis. He suffered from acute depression and suicidal ideation. He was stabilized on three medications and was “out of the woods” in terms of safety, but he wasn’t the same as before the episode. He was still suffering from some debilitating symptoms and had side effects from the medication. Dhru and Dr. Stein discuss the Functional Medicine approach to addressing depression and other mental health disorders. They also talk about the connection between autoimmune conditions and gut health. In this episode, we dive into: -Dr. Stein’s son’s health crisis (2:50) -Celiac disease and brain fog (14:58)-How long it took to notice a shift in her son’s health after taking a Functional Medicine approach (17:50)-What Dr. Stein did to turn around her own health (23:26) -The connection between gut health and autoimmune conditions (26:19)-The 5 R’s of Gut Restoration (34:55)-The inspiration behind Dr. Stein’s book, What If It’s Not Depression? Our response to the Gospel is determined by whether we believe it’s true or not. And if we believe it’s true there’s only one possible response as Dan explains. The post What If It’s True? appeared first on Community Church.
Do you sometimes feel detached from God's presence and His Word? Charles Martin shares beautiful, vivid pictures that help us to immerse ourselves in events of the Bible from his book "What If It's True?: A Storyteller's Journey With Jesus," with the aim of bringing people closer to God.
While Jimmy and Christine are gone on a much needed and deserved sabbatical for six months to rest and recuperate, we will be bringing you the best of the best from the vast archives of shows that Jimmy has accumulated over the last 15 years. We also will be airing shows from his wildly popular JIMMY RANTS live show that originated on Instagram Live and now resides at JimmyRants.com. Paid advertisement “I’m afraid that a lot of people that try this diet try to cut carbs and calories.” - Gary Taubes Paid advertisement Our first deep dive into the archives brings us to the first time Gary Taubes visited the show. This originally aired in two parts, but catch them both together in today’s show. In September 2007, Gary published the book-length version of his years based upon years of research into the carbohydrate connection to diet and health problems which we all got a first glimpse of in his groundbreaking 2002 op-ed piece on the subject of the healthy low carb lifestyle entitled “What If It’s All Been A Big Fat Lie?” Paid advertisement The book is known alternatively as either Good Calories, Bad Calories (in the USA) or The Diet Deception (in the UK). Listen in as Jimmy asks Gary Taubes the questions sent in by his blog readers and podcast listeners, how much he initially hated that title for his book until his wife convinced him otherwise, the impact of carbohydrate calories on weight, the change of heart that Dr. Andrew Weil has had regarding low-carb, the theories espoused by low-fat diet guru Dr. Dean Ornish, and what can be done to influence the health authorities about the positive impact of low-carb living.

The Worst Excuses Are The Reasonable Ones It's the reasonable excuses that you'll believe. They will stop you for making the progress that would be possible if you didn't believe them. What's A Reasonable Excuse? I'm too busy Yes, you could be very busy. But, that's also an excuse. A reasonable excuse. But, still an excuse. You may be a professional with many demands at work, a family to take care of, goals to achieve, and lots of other things on your plate. Yes, you could be very busy. That is why it's a reasonable excuse. It makes sense. You're too busy to do more things because of all the things that you're doing now. At the same time, it's just an excuse. What you do is your choice. Own that choice. The next time you tell yourself you're too busy think about it. What you're saying is that you choose to keep doing what you're doing. It's your choice what you do. It takes money to make money. It's easy to believe what we hear over and over again. But, let me tell you many many people have made money that didn't start with tons of money. You can choose to believe that the reason why you're not making a lot if money is because you didn't start with it. Believe that if you wish. It may be a reasonable excuse. Anything Else Just about anything that you believe as being the reason why you can't achieve your goal can be an excuse. If the excuse seems really plausible, then it has the danger of being a reasonable excuse and you'll need to be careful that it doesn't stop you and your progress. What If It's A Reason & Not An Excuse? Okay, there may be a legitimate reason why you can't succeed. I thought about listing some ‘reasons' why people don't succeed and then searching and finding successful people who overcame those challenges. Then, I thought it would just upset people and not get adequate credit to those who overcame the challenge. Instead, if there is a real reason why you CAN'T achieve your goal, then ask yourself these questions. Is there something you can do about it? Would learning or developing a new skill help? Has anyone anywhere overcome that challenge? See it as a challenge. Can't Never Could – Change your language. Google inspirational stories There are two types of limitations. The real and the imagined. Only the imagined are impossible to overcome.

Fasten your SJW seatbelts because Brenna and Joe are tackling racism, privilege and duality in our most vital (and emotional) Chapter yet as we cover Angie Thomas' amazing The Hate U Give and George Tillman Jr.'s 2018 film adaptation. The discussion about the book and recent racist events in the media brings one host to tears, prompts a rage-fuelled clap back against #AllLivesMatter, but we're mostly here to heap effusive praise on the best YA book we've covered to date. Plus: Brenna goes to bat for book two of Strong Female Protagonist, a web comic written by Brennan Lee Mulligan and drawn by Molly Ostertag while Joe saves his homework assignment with Becky Albertini and Adam Silvera’s cute queer romance, What If It’s Us. Finally, in an unlikely scenario, we have to swap out a pair of YA Bingo spaces. Which ones get the chop? You'll have to listen to find out! In this segment, writer John Halstead expounds on his experience of coming to terms with the stark truth of our present predicament regarding global climate change, as was presented in his first essay (“What If It’s Already Too Late?”: Being an Activist in the Anthropocene’), published by Gods&Radicals, when he asks the question “What if it’s already too late?” We discuss the journey individuals must make when this question appears in their lives, and the various ways we can interpret and process the likely answer to this question. In John’s second essay ‘“Die Early and Often”: Being Attis in the Anthropocene,’ John presents a pagan perspective to the subject of the human-caused ecological crisis unfolding presently, and guides the reader into a mythological understanding of humanity’s role within the grand cycle of life and death, using the archetypes presented in the Myth of the Dying God as a framework to process civilizational collapse and the destructive role humanity has played within the living systems of the planet. John Halstead is a native of the southern Laurentian bioregion and lives in Northwest Indiana, near Chicago. He is one of the founders of 350 Indiana-Calumet, which works to organize resistance to the fossil fuel industry in the Region. John was the principal facilitator of “A Pagan Community Statement on the Environment”. He strives to live up to the challenge posed by the statement through his writing and activism. John has written for numerous online platforms, including Patheos, Huffington Post, PrayWithYourFeet.org, and at Gods & Radicals. He is Editor-at-Large of HumanisticPaganism.com. In this episode, I speak with pagan writer and activist John Halstead on the themes presented in his excellent and perceptive two-part essay published by Gods&Radicals, entitled ‘“What If It’s Already Too Late?”: Being an Activist in the Anthropocene’ and ‘“Die Early and Often”: Being Attis in the Anthropocene.' The front pages of Gary Taubes’ new book on sugar feature a blurb excerpted from the magazine Scientific American: “Taubes is a science journalist’s science journalist who researches topics to the point of obsession – actually, well beyond that point – and never dumbs things down for readers.” Gary’s most recent obsession is documented in “The Case Against Sugar,” a book that argues that increased consumption of sugar over the past 30 to 40 years has led to a diabetes epidemic not only in the United States, but an epidemic that’s now spreading around the world. Episode 37 of STEM-Talk features a more than two-hour conversation with Gary about his latest research as well as a look back at other nutrition and science topics that have dominated Gary’s journalistic investigations since the 1980s. Gary first burst onto the national scene in 2002 with an article in the New York Times Magazine titled, “What If’s It’s All Been a Big Fat Lie?” Gary made the point that Robert Atkins and his high-fat, low-carb diet had a better history and scientific record of helping people lose weight than the low-fat diet that was and remains the centerpiece of the nation’s health policy and food pyramid. The article had an immediate impact. As Michael Pollan pointed out in the introduction of “The Omnivore’s Dilemma,” in the fall of 2002 bread “abruptly disappeared overnight from the American dinner table.” Virtually overnight, wrote Pollan, Americans changed the way they eat. Gary did not set out to become a science journalist. He graduated from Harvard College in 1977 with an S.B. degree in applied physics and went on to earn an M.S. degree in aeronautical engineering from Stanford University. But while at Stanford, he realized he wasn’t that passionate about becoming an aeronautical engineer and decided to enroll in the Columbia School of Journalism to become an investigative reporter. In the ‘80s, Gary became fascinated with flawed science and started writing a series of magazine articles about bad science. That eventually led to a pair of books: “Nobel Dreams” in 1987 and “Bad Science: The Short Life and Weird Times of Cold Fusion” in 1993. After “Bad Science,” Gary turned to nutrition reporting and that resulted in the 2002 article in the New York Times Magazine. He followed up on his research for the article with two books: “Good Calories, Bad Calories” in 2007; and “Why We Get Fat” in 2010. Both books detailed how refined carbohydrates are largely responsible for America’s rising obesity rate and a primary cause of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other chronic diseases of the Western diet. His new book, “The Case Against Sugar,” takes this argument a step further and shows how the explosion of sugar consumption and sugar-rich products in the United States has led to a global diabetes epidemic. Dan Barber, author of “The Third Plate,” wrote in a New York Times review of Gary’s book, “Comparing the dangers of inhaling cigarettes with chowing down on candy bars may sound like a false equivalence, but Gary Taubes’s “The Case Against Sugar” will persuade you otherwise. Here is a book on sugar that sugarcoats nothing. The stuff kills.” Below are links to Gary’s books: “The Case Against Sugar” http://amzn.to/2ps8Qbl “Good Calories, Bad Calories” http://amzn.to/2qTwJJ6 “Why We Get Fat” http://amzn.to/2qKuv2u “Bad Science” http://amzn.to/2qTjyrI “Nobel Dreams” http://amzn.to/2pXpRgK Show notes: 4:41: Ken and Dawn welcome Gary to the show and ask him to talk about how a Harvard physics major ended up going to journalism school to become an investigative reporter. 12:53: Dawn asks Gary to tell the story behind his 2002 article in The New York Times Magazine, “What If It’s All Been a Big Fat Lie?” 21:13: Gary shares how his work for “What If It’s All Been a Big Fat Lie?” led to additional research and the book, “Good Calories, Bad Calories.”
