This week, Mark is delighted to welcome Pastor Jesse Bradley to the podcast. After graduating from Dartmouth College, Jesse went on to become a professional soccer goalkeeper in Zimbabwe, Aberdeen, and Minnesota, before a life threatening illness ended his career. With his Master's Degree in Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, Jesse is now the Pastor at Grace Community Church in Washington State, and, recently, his brilliant sermon series on the Book of Jonah caught Mark’s attention and admiration. The passage he has chosen to discuss is one of which Mark was previously unaware, The Book of Haggai. Their conversation begins with Jesse describing his faith journey and his illness, before summarizing the passage and why it is of consequence to him. Relating the themes of hope and rebuilding within the passage to the situation through which the world has moved in 2020, Jesse stresses the need for strength to achieve success in the ‘new normal’, the importance of a God-centered life, the greatest need in America these days, and God’s ability to help rebuild lives. He and Mark also discuss the notions of taking a step of faith, God working through us, the greatest gift a parent can give a child, and Jesse’s perspective on the physical church in 2020. As is the tradition for this podcast, it concludes with the lessons our esteemed guest has learned about humankind. As Jesse rightly points out, this passage’s prophet is considered minor solely for the length of the books, definitely not for the power of his words – a fact that is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt in today’s rich and rewarding discussion. Episode Highlights: · Jesse’s faith journey · His life threatening illness · Jesse’s summary of the passage and why it is consequential to him · Strength and success in the ‘new normal’ · A me-centered life compared with a God-centered life · The greatest need in America right now · Rebuilding lives · Taking a step of faith · God working through us · What Jesse has learned about the physical church in 2020 · The greatest gift a parent can give a child · The lessons that Jesse has learned about humankind Quotes: “Sometimes your passion isn’t where your greatest gifts are.” “I never thought I’d be a pastor.” “When my world was truly rocked, that’s where I found, first finding Jesus and then also finding an identity and a security that I’d never had before.” “There was a foundation that began, that ends up being like a rock instead of sand.” “It’s like you have a source of love and joy and peace that you never had before.” “We’ve had six months of rubble.” “We’re not just going to return to what it was like in 2019. We can’t put new wine in old wine skins.” “Success isn’t going to be rebuilding the past.” “The later glory will be the greater glory.” “It’s easy to drift into selfishness.” “Laws don’t change hearts.” “God can rebuild any life.” “I think the home is the place that has to be vibrant. The home is the hub right now.” “When all of God’s people are filled with God’s presence and it’s everywhere they go, 24/7, now you’ve got a church that’s alive.” “When somebody truly knows the living God, it’s like a fountain that can’t be stopped.” “Don’t miss God’s grace. Don’t miss the God of the Bible.” “We need each other far more than we realize.” “We need unity. We need that now.” “We need peace right now.” Book of Haggai - https://www.sefaria.org/Haggai.1.1-2.23?lang=bi&with=all&lang2=en Links: The Rabbi’s Husband homepage: http://therabbishusband.com/ Mark’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/markgerson?lang=en The Rabbi’s Husband Newsletter contact: daniel@therabbishusband.com

“The breath is the carrier of consciousness.” If anyone has mastered their mind, it's extreme athlete Wim Hof.Wim Hof got his nickname “The Iceman” by breaking a number of records related to cold exposure. His feats include climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in shorts, running a half marathon above the Arctic Circle on his bare feet, and standing in a container while covered with ice cubes for more than 112 minutes. He developed the Wim Hof Method: a natural path to an optimal state of body and mind.He says that our brains have the power to guarantee us happiness, strength, and health. We can actually regulate our mind and the autonomous nervous system by breathing and being present.I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Poland along several other top entrepreneurs and business owners to experience a week with Wim Hof that I will never forget. As a group, we participated in several different exercises. Some involved meditation and breathing and others involved enduring intense cold and ice water challenges. On this trip, we all learned about the importance of brotherhood. Some of the physical challenges would have been unbearable if we were going at it alone. We all had each other to encourage, to motivate, and to push. We've all been in a place, where we think, "I can't do this anymore."That's a mindset roadblock that we were taught to overcome. Often in the midst of being uncomfortable, our minds and bodies panic. Our top priority is becoming comfortable again. But this is not often the correct way to deal with stress or pain. The mind is powerful, and if you teach it to avoid pain, then you'll never reach your full potential. If anyone has mastered the art of being uncomfortable while releasing stress, it's Wim Hof. Jesse James Hollywood was a suburban Los Angeles pot dealer. At just 20 years old, he owned his own home, pulled in a grand a week, and had a couple of his old little league friends to sell his drugs and do his bidding. Jesse thought he was hot shit. So when one of his henchmen refused to fall in line, Jesse decided to send him a message. He kidnapped the man’s 15-year-old brother, Nicholas Markowitz, and later learned from a family lawyer that the justice system doesn’t go easy on kidnappers. What Jesse did next landed him on the FBI’s Most Wanted List. Then Kristin really bums us out with the story of Andrea Yates, a deeply troubled Texas mother who drowned her five children in her bathtub. Andrea’s story shocked and disturbed the nation, but it also raised important questions about Andrea’s mental state. By the time she murdered her children, she’d been hospitalized, she’d attempted suicide, she’d withheld food from her children, and she’d been prescribed antipsychotic drugs. Both the prosecution and the defense agreed that Andrea was mentally ill, but would the jury find her not guilty by reason of insanity? And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. If you haven't already heard of the 'buy and hold' strategy, then this is the episode for you. If you have, then this is certainly the episode for you. For a while now, we've discussed the advantages, and disadvantages, of buying stocks with a very long-term focus, as generally speaking, the market does well over time. If you had bought the index right before the Global Financial Crisis, for example, and held through the crash, then you would be well up on your initial investment. The buy-and-hold strategy. From around 2008, we've seen a rise in the popularity of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), across the globe, as many people move there money from active management, into ETFs, which are a more passive investing approach. In some cases, they've done this thinking that, over time, no matter what happens, the market will always go up, and you will make money. Not all cases, but some. And this is what we discuss today. One of our favourite investors, and finance commentators, is Jesse Felder. An ex-investment banker, and billion-dollar hedge fund manager, Jesse is well respected and has many strong opinions on the direction of the marker. In one of his recent interviews, he discusses what he as coined as 'the buy and hold cult'. We give our two-cents on his comments. In this episode you will learn: • What Jesse means by the term 'buy-and-hold cult' • If you are part of the cult! • About Japan's stock market recovery • Our opinions on passive investing Stocks and resources discussed: • The Felder Report

What work you should do in order to integrate your mind before actually doing psychedelics. How you can improve your emotional intelligence by exploring your cognitive biases. What Jesse is doing now to continuously explore and discover who he is. Power Quotes From The Show “The world is something that we make. If we’re giving everybody participation awards so a kid feels like they’re the specialist snowflake in their class just by being there, that doesn’t necessarily set themselves up for today’s world.” – @Lawlerpalooza http://bit.ly/wfpodcast "We intuitively think that more choices are good. So, if you give people three options, they'll analyze all their options and make a choice. However, if you give them 35 choices of the same thing, we won't want to read every label and either we end up not making a choice or just grab the closest one and make a completely uneducated choice versus at least looking over the top three." - Jesse Lawler "According to Bruno Bettelheim's thesis, the developmental age at which a person has when they experience their first big disappointment with reality really sets the psychic trajectory in motion that they will have for the rest of their life. You don't necessarily need to try to address it but sometimes that's good in certain cases. However, at least try to realize why you missed understanding the world so much that it came and smacked you in this particular way. The difference between somebody who receives a psychic wound when they were two versus fourteen is how they address it from a psychological standpoint and what's going to motivate them going forward throughout their life." - Jesse Lawler  "So much of the information that each of us get day in and day out now is coming through some sort of digitally mediated stream rather than our own direct senses whether it's this conversation that we're having over the internet or news that we're reading that somebody else heard, it was written down, or transmitted to us, etc. If you had lived 200 years ago and you were a farmer, a lot of the information you got was from the work of your own hands. I would have known how the soil worked because I dig the soil with my own shovel and had first-hand experience with the world. You might not have known a lot but the things that you would've known came from direct experience and not mediated by any third party." - Jesse Lawler "Groupthink is definitely a danger. If you're in a group of 10 or 12 people, what the first person says has a primacy effect and can really affect what everyone else says. The first one to speak up is usually one of the more dominant ones of the group and holds a lot of social capital among everyone and it becomes harder for each person to voice their own opinions if that's something that's going to cause conflict. So, when I seek advice, I try to get advice individually from a group so that they're not coloring one another's opinion." - Jesse Lawler "The world is something that we make. If we're giving everybody participation awards and if a kid feels like they're the specialist snowflake in their class just by virtue of being there, that doesn't necessarily set themselves up for today's world but it might set them up for the world that exists in 20 years when if you feel bothered by anything outside, you can just plug into virtual reality where all of a sudden you're the star of your own television show in a Trumanesque world." - Jesse Lawler Links From Today's Show Jesse Lawler Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Smart Drug Smarts Facebook Twitter YouTube WFR 097 Jesse Lawler: Brainpower, Consciousness, & The Placebo Effect WFR 036 Jesse Lawler: How to Build A Bulletproof Brain Smart Drug Smarts Podcast Smart Drug Smarts Podcast #220 - Cognitive Fallacies with Dr. Richard E. “I LEARN BEST BY JUMPING INTO THE UNKNOWN.” There’s one resource in this world we all take for granted: time. We’re only on this planet for a small amount of time, and we tend to build routines in our lives that makes the days roll by. The next thing we know, we look in the mirror and we’re 70. When you look at that face do you want to see a life of missed opportunities or one filled with experiences you are proud of? If you want the latter, you need to make sure you schedule time for you. Take the time to build your life resume, because that’s what makes our lives much more interesting. When you talk about someone, do you talk about how they clock in to work on time everyday at 9 am and work late hours? Or do you talk about the places they’ve been to, and the experiences they’ve had? On this episode of The School of Greatness, I bring you back someone who has decided to build their life’s resume: Jesse Itzler. Importance of taking advantage of time. Routine make life fly by. Make time for yourself - building life resume instead of business resume. Jesse enjoys living life "out of the box." In fact, he doesn't even have a box. The author of the New York Times bestseller, Living with a Seal, co founded Marquis Jet, the world's largest private jet card company which he and his partner sold to Berkshire Hathaway/NetJets. Jesse then partnered with Zico coconut water, which he and his partner sold to The Coca-Cola Company. He’s also the kind of person that when he wants something he grabs onto the opportunity without delay. He recently decided he needed to detox his mind from electronics and the constant multitasking of today’s world. He ended up living with monks, living in a room as small as a table, and unable to communicate with his family, just to find himself. The lessons he learned most were about the need to make time for yourself and the people around you that you care most about. In the end, that’s where you’ll have the most impact and where your true legacy will come from. Learn more lessons from Jesse’s isolation and time with the monks, on Episode 652. Some Questions I Ask: How was your 15 day digital detox? (8:45) What are you not waiting for? (20:09) If you could go back 20 years, what would you eliminate or add to your life? (21:41) Do you still take 3 hours for yourself every day? (24:44) What do you think you can learn from pain? (29:14) What did the monks teach you about overcoming personal challenges?
