In this series, I explore how the significant influences and archetypal events experienced in our first 14 years of life set the stage for what is most meaningful throughout our adult years. In times of transition, a voice wonders: who am I at the soul level, at my essence? Our earliest resonant moments of awe–what lit us up–offer direct access into the root system of our original belonging. In episode two, I explore my sense of place and of home, searching for lost stories of my ancestors, and uncovering secrets that contributed to the shaping of my sense of identity. After sharing my story, I am honored to be in conversation with social impact leader and global women's silence breaker, Jensine Larsen, Founder of World Pulse, as we explore the power of unleashed stories.Growing up in southern California with an Irish name, I was inspired to know more about my family roots but confused by the lack of stories handed down. Surrounded by Disneyland and Hollywood as cultural icons, I intuited instead a hidden reality that fueled my quest to uncover my true ground of being. My grandmother, born in Ireland and who emigrated to New York, only offered silence when I asked about her homeland. This whetted my curiosity!Visiting my ancestral homeland in my late teenage years, I lit up as I heard my Irish relatives proclaim: “Welcome Home!” From the green landscape to the storytelling culture, I felt a sense of belonging. I share excerpts from my journal written on that fateful trip as my early love for writing poetry continues to blossom. I discovered that the way I see the world is Irish, rooted in nature's beauty and spirituality, connected to a deep, ancient, soulful essence. After sharing my story, I welcome Jensine Larsen who shares through-threads from her childhood shaped by the blissful, natural world and an imaginative sense of play. She details the journey of finding her voice, eventually becoming an international journalist and founder of World Pulse, a digital platform connecting women's voices worldwide. Once a shy, misunderstood girl with a unique name, she depicts how she learned to challenge the status quo after experiencing loss and witnessing inequalities. As a young journalist in the Amazon, Jensine shares the discovery of her calling to be a conduit for other women's stories, where formerly unheard voices can be witnessed, leading to connection, empowerment, and new leadership frameworks around gender and media. Topics Covered:(03:39) Exile in LA among a silent family history (12:30) Honoring ancestry through searching out stories (16:18) Visiting Ireland and feeling at home (23:59) Journal excerpts from that fateful first trip(27:39) Jensine Larsen joins me in conversation (40:10) Listening so other womens' voices can be heard(49:34) Vision for World Pulse and global changeJensine LarsenJensine Larsen | websiteJensine Larsen | InstagramWorld Pulse | websiteWorld Pulse | InstagramStay Connected:mauraconlon.com @orginalbeloning on Instagram Maura Conlon on...

Leila, along with Natalie Brook, runs an open enrollment Feminist Leadership training program (We are Feminist Leaders), and Kirthi is one of its alumni. As some NGOs and development organizations have embraced, how much of its subversive elements get diluted and cooptated; and how should we think about this? This week on Relationships 2.0 my guest is Gail Straub author of The Ashokan Way: Landscape’s Path into Consciousness About the book: The natural world has the power to awaken, restore, and transform us, and nowhere are these capacities more evident than in the thirty-six luminous essays that make up The Ashokan Way. Written in the form of journal entries that take place over the course of a year, the essays explore both the outer landscapes of the awe-inspiring Ashokan Reservoir, a vast open space surrounded by the ancient bluestone peaks of the Catskill Mountain Watershed, and the equally awe-inspiring inner landscapes of our own most personal terrains. Each of the book’s evocative entries describes a walk along the ever-changing reservoir, illuminating the natural world as a portal to self-understanding, restoration, and meaning. Some walks take us deep inside to trek the hills and valleys of our aspirations and sorrows, our joys and confusions. Others offer a profound antidote to an interior landscape that has become crowded with distraction and overstimulation. Still others seem to seem usher us into the realm of the mystical. As surely as we would perish without the water and air that the earth provides, we are at risk of perishing without the spiritual sustenance that the natural world provides through its ability to stir and astonish us. In a world that is ever faster, noisier, and busier, The Ashokan Way is a balm, an inspiration, and an invitation to discover greater intimacy with inner and outer landscapes alike. About the author: Gail Straub is the Executive Director of the Empowerment Institute, which she co-founded in 1981. As one of the world’s leading authorities on women’s empowerment, she co-directs the Empowerment Institute’s School for Transformative Social Change empowering change agents from around the world to design and implement cutting-edge social innovations. As part of this focus, she co-founded IMAGINE: A Global Initiative for the Empowerment of Women to help women heal from violence, build strong lives, and contribute to their community. IMAGINE initiatives are currently under way throughout Africa, Afghanistan, India, and the Middle East. Gail has consulted to many organizations furthering women’s empowerment including the Chinese Women’s Federation, Women for Women International, World Pulse, and the Omega Women’s Leadership Center. Gail is the author of five books including, with her husband David Gershon, the best-selling Empowerment: The Art of Creating Your Life As You Want It which has been translated into over 14 languages, the critically acclaimed The Rhythm of Compassion, and the award-winning feminist memoir Returning to My Mother’s House. She lives in the Hudson River Valley in New York.

Co-hosts Jan Rutherford and Jim Vaselopulos interview Colleen Abdoulah, former Chair and CEO of WOW! Colleen, who was the only female CEO at a top-ten cable operating company, is widely respected for her passionate focus on customer experience and company culture. In this episode, Colleen motivates young professionals to lead passionately with purpose, by first learning the history, then seeking and engaging existing organizations. Colleen maintains that everyone has gifts and passions, and when directed meaningfully, these strengths will help guide leaders to success. She encourages leaders to reflect each day by asking, “How did I show up? Was I an influence for positive or negative?” She discourages passive-aggressive behaviors, and promotes accountability and learning to confront differences with courtesy. Listen in to learn the value of individual accountability, the best use of the inherent gifts all people have, and why methods matter along the way to your goals.   Key Takeaways [5:33] Colleen gained awareness as a teenager that women across the world have had to fight for rights. In her 20’s, she was pulled to work for social justice and compassion towards the marginalized, especially women and children, and she continues those efforts today. [8:01] Colleen’s advice to young professionals looking to help a cause is first to get some context, find out the history and background, and do their homework. She says some young women today don't even know what a suffragette was. [11:46] Colleen recalls being counseled that if we make a difference in one life, then what we’re doing matters. [15:16] Ask yourself, “where can I contribute and be fed in the process?” Finding an enriching purpose makes the difference between a passion and an obligation. [17:15] When looking for a mentor, find people in your communities who have similar values to you, get their attention, share who you are. Your mentor's role is to listen, probe, draw out, and help guide and instruct you, not to advise you what to do. [20:38] There's diversity of lifestyle and ethnicity, but also diversity of mind. Many organizations make the mistake of finding people who think alike, because it's easier. Getting diversity right comes down to one basic thing — do I value it? [25:54] Regardless of our background, we all work with the basis that we're human beings who want to know, “Do I belong? Do I have something to contribute? And “A”m I valued and respected?” [31:03] How you love, how you interact, how you navigate through your career and your exchanges with others, differentiates you as a person.   Books Mentioned on the Show How to Win Friends and Influence People, book by Dale Carnegie   Bio Colleen Abdoulah, who was the only female CEO at a top-ten cable operating company, is widely respected for her passionate focus on customer experience and company culture. Currently the Chair of the Board at WOW!, Colleen guided Internet, cable and phone as CEO for 12 years. In those years, WOW! quadrupled the customer base, with revenues of over $1.2B, and earned multiple awards from J.D. Power and Associates, Consumer Reports, and PC Magazine Reader's' Choice. WOW! was named in the National Best and Brightest Companies to Work For in 2012 and 2013. Before joining WOW!, Colleen worked at TCI as Assistant COO and EVP of Cable Operations. She serves on the boards of the American Cable Association and C-SPAN, and is a past Vice President of the Executive Board of Women in Cable and Telecommunications, and past Chairperson for the WICT Foundation. She is past Chair of the Board for the Rocky Mountain Children's Law Center, serves on the boards for The Women's College of the University of Denver, the Colorado Chapter of the International Women's Forum, and World Pulse. Colleen is a keynote speaker on customer experience and company culture, and gender-balanced management and leadership, delivering her messages and stories with humor.
