It has now been over a year since Israel embarked on its genocidal campaign in Gaza. In that time, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been killed or injured. Furnishing Israel with more than just diplomatic cover, Western governments have kept up a steady supply of military aid and equipment, actively enabling the wholesale slaughter of Palestinians. Our governments' complicity cannot be ignored or overstated. At the heart of questions around how and why Britain and the US are continuing to arm Israel lies the international arms trade. Thinking more about how this corrupting, deadly industry operates, and how we might resist it, is vital - something that Palestinians understand only too well: one year ago, Palestinian trade unions reiterated their urgent global call to action, imploring workers across the world to halt the sale of weapons to Israel. We are joined on the show by Ahmed Alnaouq, Andrew Feinstein and Anna Stavrianakis, to discuss how weapons sales to Israel function as a direct expression of state policy; how the arms industry corrupts our own democratic political processes; and the socio-economic opportunity cost of our governments' commitment to militarism. We also talk about the direct impact these weapons have had on life in Gaza, long before October 7th 2023; and the work that We Are Not Numbers is doing to give young Palestinians agency through sharing their stories. --- Ahmed Alnaouq is a former Palestinian diplomat who served in the Palestinian Mission to the UK. He is the co-founder of We Are Not Numbers, which empowers Palestinian youth to share their stories globally. Ahmed holds a masters degree in International Journalism from Leeds University, and his work has been featured in media outlets including the Washington Post, the New Arab, and Gulf News. Andrew Feinstein is the executive director of Shadow World Investigations. Andrew resigned as an African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament in South Africa in 2001, in protest at the government's refusal to investigate corruption in a $10 billion arms deal. His first book, After the Party, reveals the impact of this deal. He also wrote the critically acclaimed book The Shadow World: Inside the Global Arms Trade, and worked on an award-winning feature documentary, Shadow World. Anna Stavrianakis is director of research and strategy at Shadow World Investigations, and Professor of International Relations at the University of Sussex. Ahmed, Andrew and Anna are all contributors to the new book, Monstrous Anger of the Guns: How the Global Arms Trade is Ruining the World and What We Can Do About It, which is available now from Pluto Press.

Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
On last week's podcast and the one a few before that, and in a post, Shaun and I talked a bit about plot structures and narrative structures and how here in the U.S. we think of these usually (not always!) as pretty linear, and pretty much in a three-act framework (think beginning, middle, end) with rising stakes and drama as you go along. This is not the only way to write. I am very much a product of the U.S. culture. And I'm going to talk a tiny bit in the next couple weeks about different forms/shapes of storytelling, but again . . . I am a student of this culture's structures. I am not an expert at other structures. I adore them though. I'm going to be providing links. And hopefully by quickly talking about some of them, you might go off and explore and adore, too. Maybe even get an epiphany for your own story? So, another kind of storytelling is Middle Eastern and it's Frame Story in our language. And it's so cool. Basically, as the Novelsmithy explains "many types of stories, characters, and symbols are woven together into a larger tale. "One Thousand And One Nights is the most famous example of this. In this story, Shahrazad tells story after story to the Sultan in order to keep him from killing her. Her stories include a variety of complex narratives, different characters, conflicts, genres, and morals. There are even frame stories within the larger frame story! "Characteristics of Middle Eastern Storytelling: Outer 'frame story' tying multiple stories together Multiple characters and narratives Variety of genres, fantasy, and high action." It's very influenced by The Qur'an. Gulf News writes, "One of the most revered traditions of oral storytelling is the hakawati. As intricate and complex as a weaving pattern, this motif-rich narrative style darts in and out of stories, offering unending drama where the storyteller begins one tale, deftly leaves it mid-way to pick up another and then has a third story emerging from a subplot of the first and so on. All this is done using the tools of allegory, folklore, satire, music and a visual spectacle of grand sweeping gestures and facial expressions to finally create an enthralling experience for his listeners." There's a great piece about frame stories here. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Pogie's like "hey dude, I live my style and life in the frame story style of way. It always comes back to me. I'll always be doing something. I'll see a cat and I'll change my storyline." And that keeps happening. It's all about multiple stories in a brain. WRITING EXERCISE Do the Forrest Gump. Find a setting like a park bench and tell the stories that make a life. OR at least outline it.

The Israel-Palestine conflict is not just being fought in the streets of Hebron or Gaza; it is also being fought in the classrooms of America. Leading this struggle for the Israeli side is a group called the Institute for Curriculum Services (ICS). Jerusalem-based journalist Jessica Buxbaum has been investigating the ICS and scrutinizing their role in shifting the public debate in the U.S. Jessica joins Lowkey to discuss her recent MintPress News investigation, “Institute for Curriculum Services: How an Israel Lobby Group Infiltrated US Education. In recent years, progressive activism has forced the United States to begin to deal with the reality of its racist part. These anti-racist movements have attempted to correct what they see as a whitewashing of racist violence from history textbooks. The ICS has attempted to position itself in this post-Black Lives Matter milieu, claiming that their organization exists to give a more accurate picture of Jewish history in textbooks and clear up lingering misconceptions and stereotypes. “But really,” Buxbaum told Lowkey today, “they are just a front for the Israeli lobby.”Jessica Buxbaum is an investigative journalist specializing in Middle Eastern politics and current affairs. Aside from MintPress News, her work can also be found in Middle East Eye, The New Arab, and Gulf News.Buxbaum sent Freedom of Information requests to the education boards of all 50 states and found that the ICS was involved in a pressure campaign to monitor and change the wording and framing of school textbooks across the country in order to present a one-sided, pro-Israel narrative to children.Examples included requests to delete all references to “Palestine,” “Palestinian territories,” or the “West Bank”; removing information about Palestinian culture and heritage; and even demands to amend maps, so that areas such as East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights appear not as illegally annexed but as territorially part of Israel.“A lot of it is about erasing Palestine, anything that references the natives of Palestine, Palestinians as an indigenous people, that Palestinians have inhabited the land for thousands of years. All those things, they want to have deleted,” Buxbaum told Lowkey.Another key prong in the ICS attack on the truth is to present Palestinian leadership as violent and the Israeli state as a noble, peace-loving democracy. The word “settlers,” the ICS requested, should be replaced by “communities.” “Wall” with “security fence,” “militant” with “terrorist,” and so on. References to Israel capturing the West Bank in 1967 should be removed and depictions of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat should include that he “direct[ed] countless terrorist attacks against Israelis.” It should also, the ICS suggests, be made clear that Israel is the “only democracy in the Middle East.”The ICS has hosted dozens of training seminars with thousands of schoolteachers across the United States, presenting the issue in a framework conducive to the outlook of the Israeli government. The organization has also recommended that American students be discouraged from finding their own sources of information on the internet, and instead be instructed to use resources from the Anti-Defamation League or the Jewish Virtual Library. However, attempts to propagandize children with a pro-Israeli government narrative are not limited to the United States. Lowkey also shares his research into how a similar phenomenon is happening in the United Kingdom.Support the show
0:38 - Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's first visit to Saudi Arabia in years represents a thaw in Saudi-Turkey relations that hit a low point four years ago. Erdogan hopes the visit will herald a new era of relations after intense efforts to repair strained ties following the aftermath of the Jamal Khashoggi murder in Istanbul in 2018. Before the visit, in a policy reversal, Turkey halted and transferred its own trial of the Saudi suspects in the killing of Khashoggi to Saudi Arabia. According to Reuters, Erdogan met with King Salman in an official ceremony in the al-Salam palace in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom's de facto ruler, attended the ceremony before having a one-on-one meeting with Erdogan. Happy New Year, my dear listeners and welcome to the Beehive Household New Year Special! For those who are wondering what is in the stars for 2021, I'm super excited to introduce my guest today – she is one of the most successful and highly regarded media astrologers in the world – Shelley Von Strunckel! Shelley is a California-born sun sign astrologer and is best known to the public for her newspaper and magazine columns. In 1992 she created the first-ever astrological column in the UK Sunday Times newspaper. She's also written columns for Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, the Gulf News, English Vogue, French and Chinese Vogue and the Times of India. Her daily horoscope column runs in the Evening Standard and loved by many here in the UK, and she is a popular guest on radio and television. The start of Shelley's career was in the fashion business where she worked as an assistant buyer, studying the psychology of dress and the history of costume at the same time, as in her own words ‘she's always been interested in what makes people tick'. And astrology was part of this extensive study. And it developed from a subject of curiosity into a successful career, particularly when she was discovered by a renowned astrologer, Patrick Walker, and became his heir for the London Evening Standard column. KEY TAKEAWAYS With astrology, many think it's about a fixed destiny but now in today's world prediction is something different. I talk to clients about what makes them tick. It's about being self-aware and strategic. Everyone has blind spots and I help people to see those areas. I'm fascinated by what drives trends, which are driven by what people perceive as true. Meditation is a single state but there are many different ways to achieve that state. Those who meditate have an improved immune system and are calmer. We have lived in a world that has so little inner reference people don't understand because we haven't been taught how to regard our inner world. The way the world is perceived is in cycles, slowly the world is changing and people are more open to things. Worth comes from inside but many people don't know how to develop it and It hasn't been treated as an objective in life or education. The way the world is at the moment is an opportunity for re-evaluation of values. The meaning of network now is about close connections and friendships. BEST MOMENTS ‘My drug of choice is opera because it's so visual and going out to the opera is so enriching' ‘I have a great capacity for writing' ‘Astrology is about cycles' VALUABLE RESOURCES Beehive Household podcast ABOUT THE HOST Nataliya Lloyd is a finance expert and after 15 years of studying and working in the industry, she changed tack and went with her dream of becoming an entrepreneur and followed her creative call. She started her career in journalism with the Free Press Group and then moved to BusinessWorld in Mumbai where she worked as sub-editor and writer. She left India in 1991 and worked with Gulf Daily News in Bahrain. The next year saw her shift to Dubai - where she worked with leading publishing names like Gulf News, CPI Media, Gulf Research Centre, Dubai Media Inc. During this part of her life, she launched two architecture magazines in Dubai - Architecture in 2001 and The Big Project in 2006. Her last publishing stint was with Thomson Reuters where she was part of the core stakeholder team to launch Zawya Projects and Thomson Reuters Projects. Hence she understands the realities and complex needs of online publishing after having dealt with business analysts, IT heads, product and commercial heads as well as UI/UX specialists and raising JIRA tickets :) In her words, after interviewing 1000s of global and regional CEOs, consultants and founders, she realized after 20+years in journalism that she needed to pivot her own life and use her experience in editorial strategy to take the road less traveled. Hence, in 2016, Sona founded Kimiyaa, her own online editorial solutions firm to catalyze busy business heads to take a pause from making money and start revealing their secret sauce online. No. She does not ghostwrite. Her own secret sauce is that she uses the business journalism expertise and edge to help business Thought Leaders create original content for organic SEO, which is the bigger challenge. She actually warns her clients to sign the cheque only if he or she loves challenges. Else don't risk the journey with her. Because she is a deconstructivist by nature and loves disruption. Sometimes you have to get fired again and again (and again) to figure out your place in the world. Ed Clowes’ (@edclowes) story is not your common journalistic tale. Kids, don’t try this one at home. He gets fired for increasingly noble reasons though, ultimately getting kicked out of the city-state of Dubai. Ed discusses bumbling his way through a series of London jobs (4:57), moving to Dubai for a magazine sales job but getting into the journalism side (6:43), getting fired from a job in PR (16:03), finding his feet again at the newspaper Gulf News only to get kicked out of the country (21:05), how censorship works in Dubai and how the government directed an anti-Trump shift at the paper (32:40), finding work in the UK and feelings on moving home after being away so long (38:34), delving into what it's like living in the classist, mixing pot of a shopping mall that is Dubai (43:11), what it's like working at The Telegraph (54:37) and end on the lightning round (1:01:45). We are coming to terms with a whole new world – one that is brought to us by the eyes and the lenses of photographers across the world, that are risking their lives as much as our first responders out there. Reel is what’s real today thanks to them, telling us what's happening every minute and every hour of every new day, through their cameras. Photography is art, frozen in time – almost like an entr’acte between the time when the photograph was taken to the current time of its viewing. Except that all the photographs that we see now are in real time of a very unreal, very unknown world that has fallen deafeningly silent, bereft of humans.Rubina A Khan is an international Journalist and Photographer (Getty Images, Europe). Her editorial and photo work is published in leading publications like Paris Match, Gulf News, Fortune New York, Forbes, BBC, Harper’s Bazaar, Monocle, Travel+Leisure, Architectural Digest & Tatler. In her podcast, she takes you through the importance of visual art, in a time when reel is real, as the world around us unravels through imagery more than ever today.

Former White House official Fiona Hill's testimony is reportedly shedding light on concerns former national security adviser John Bolton had with efforts to have Ukraine investigate US President Donald Trump's political rivals. NBC News reports, citing a person in the room for the Monday hearing, that Hill told Congress the former national security advisor called Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani's efforts a "drug deal," and wanted nothing to do with them. Trump fired Bolton last month over disagreements with "many of his suggestions." Trump's pressuring of Ukraine to investigate current presidential candidate and former US Vice President Joe Biden and his son during a July phone call led to the House of Representatives' impeachment investigation. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Abu Dhabi's crown prince, welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin to the United Arab Emirates Tuesday, saying he hoped the visit would "have a great impact and present a quantum leap" in the countries' "strategic partnership," Gulf News reported. The outlet added that the two leaders "discussed enhancing bilateral ties and strategic cooperation as well as the latest regional and international developments of mutual interest.""Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno on Monday officially scrapped his own law to cut expensive fuel subsidies after days of violent protests against the IMF-backed measure, returning fuel prices to prior levels until a new measure can be found," Reuters reported. "The signing of the decree is a blow to Moreno, and leaves big questions about the oil-producing nation's fiscal situation. But it represents a win for the country's indigenous communities, who led the protests, bringing chaos to the capital and crippling the oil sector." The family of a North Texas woman who was killed by a police officer doesn't want the community to back down. Lee Merritt, the attorney for Atatiana Jefferson's family, says Aaron Dean, who resigned from the Fort Worth Police Department Monday, is a symptom of the problem, and police need to make changes to department policy. If you have been living under a roof, and not a rock, this past year or so, you may have noticed that rents have been dropping rapidly. How much further do they have to fall? Well, if you own a property, you would probably hope that prices are close to bottoming out. If you rent, you presumably wouldn’t mind seeing them fall even further? So what is actually likely to happen? To answer that question, we asked Manoj Nair, property editor at Gulf News, to join us on today’s show. Manoj has been tracking property prices and rental rates for many years, and writes regularly about the state of the market in Dubai and the UAE. We talked to him about what caused the rents to fall as much as they did, the underlying factors influencing current prices, and where the market will likely go from here.

Week-ahead: Why the emerging markets sell-off could spread by Gulf News
The rising tide of President Trump’s trade warfare is not more central than in the U.S.-China relationship. With Harry G. Broadman we target the rising friction between these two economic giants. Is the Trump trade strategy – so focused on bilateral trade balances - likely to improve economic relations between the U.S. and China? Will it help prod China in fulfilling and adhering to its obligations under the World Trade Organization, to which it acceded in 2001? To dissect such questions and other matters coloring U.S.-China trade, we examine with Harry the evolution of China’s ‘socialist market economy’ and the growing power of China’s President Xi Jinping. Harry has long and deep connections with China and the economic ‘Rise of China’. Harry began working extensively throughout China in the early 1990s overseeing the World Bank’s state-owned-enterprise restructuring loan operations and its policy dialogue with the government’s leadership on trade, foreign investment, antitrust and corporate governance reform. Harry has worked on global finance, trade and investment for decades in more than 75 emerging markets spanning 5 continents. Among other posts, he worked in the White House, first as Chief of Staff of the President’s Council of Economic Advisors and, subsequently, as United States Assistant Trade Representative. In this latter position, he led the U.S. negotiations on international trade and investment across all services industries as part of the establishment of both NAFTA and the WTO. He also managed all negotiations of U.S. Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) with other sovereigns. He served on the Board of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and was a member of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. (CFIUS). Harry has been Managing Director and a Member of the Investment Committee at Albright Capital Management, an emerging markets-focused private equity firm, and founded and led PwC’s Global Growth Strategy Management Consulting Practice. Today, Harry is CEO and Managing Partner of Proa Global Partners LLC, a cross-border transaction advisory firm. He is also a member of the Johns Hopkins faculty, an expert witness on trade and investment disputes, and writes monthly columns on global business for Forbes and Gulf News. His most recent book is: Africa’s Silk Road: China and India’s New Economic Frontier. Let’s join Harry and me in this podcast on the U.S.-China trade relationship.
Time stands still for no one and that includes Millennials. As the generation we love to hate (because they love telling us about everything we did wrong) starts to approach middle age, a new generation we can blame for all the world’s evils is busy graduating college and readying itself for the work place. Let’s get ready to welcome Generation Z. But stereotypes aside, just who is Generation Z and what will they be like? We know they’ll be one of the biggest generations ever, even bigger than the Baby Boomers in the US; they’re concerned about the job market; and they’re even more comfortable with social media than Millennials. So we bring in Stephanie Bridget, an intern with one of Gulf News’ sister publications, Friday Magazine, to give us a little insight into this generation’s mindset. Stephanie talks about her generation’s expectations and concerns, some of which may surprise you. Then again, maybe they won’t.

DP World’s role in two African ports has drawn a lot of attention recently. In Djibouti, the government illegally seized control of the Doraleh Container Terminal from a DP World-owned entity after the government lost in the Court of International Arbitration in London. Then Somalia attempted to ban DP World's operations at Berbera Port in Somaliland, a breakaway republic to the east. The attempt failed, and DP World is still working closely with the Somaliland government to develop the port into a major trade hub on the Horn of Africa. Gulf News recently sent Omar Shariff, the Deputy GCC/Middle East Editor, to Somaliland to view the port and talk to Muse Bihi Abdi, the President of Somaliland, and Dr Sa’ad Ali Shire, the foreign minister. Omar comes on Dirhams & Dollars to tell us about his experience visiting the country.
As billions of dollars ($52 billion so far) get wiped off Facebook’s market value, we look at exactly what triggered the sell off. In short the answer to that is Cambridge Analytica. The UK-based consultancy was first hit with accusations of possibly unethical conduct when a whistle blower dished out details on how Facebook was manipulated to sway voters in the US presidential election, Brexit referendum, and several other races around the world. That was closely followed by a Channel 4 report that showed the company’s executives apparently bragging about their use of propaganda, data mining and generally scurrilous means to help their clients scare people into voting a certain way. Not surprisingly, warrants were issued. But is what they did illegal? Are their alleged activities really that bad? And more importantly, how careful should you really be online? We’re joined by Jonathan Richards, Gulf News’ digital strategy director, who tells us more about the dark arts of internet manipulation. We also discuss the distinction between clever marketing and immoral campaigns.

Kerry is a political risk consultant with more than 14 years experience as a professional analyst of international security issues and Middle East political and business risks. She started her own company a year ago and is also a contributor to Gulf News in Dubai. She was previously a Deputy Director for Advisory services with Oxford Analytica. Kerry joins Beth for a discussion of the humanitarian, military, and political crisis unfolding in Syria. Then Dante, our Chief Creative Officer, takes a spin in Sarah's chair to discuss the news of the week and listener feedback. Beth and Dante talk about President Trump's comments throughout the week, Ambassador Nikki Haley's comments at the United Nations, and the White House's potentially shifting position on Syria. We then discuss North Korea's test missiles and Rex Tillerson's strange response. Finally, we turn to the confirmation hearings for Judge Neil Gorsuch and discuss the Democratic and Republican positions with respect to the Supreme Court. We received great feedback this week and will save most of it for next week, but we had to address Sandy's question: I have yet to have an experience with regulations that was not literally "job creating" for me and/or rigor/responsibility-instigating. I cannot really trace back an example where a regulation has forced a company to make significant cuts or go under. (I do, however, know of companies in the Chemical Engineering realm have utilized tax breaks intended for cleaner energy...but only did so in loop-hole/ethically questionable way...but maybe that's a different topic). Perhaps if I played out a scenario where the presence of regulations did make companies paralyzed (e.g. God forbid, if Honda leaked tons of antifreeze into storm water, knew about it, didn't report it ever, and then somehow owed a sum that would take them out), it feels like at that point such irresponsibility would have to be quite consequential. And I guess that's my question: Why does this "anti-regulation" rhetoric exist? Does it have any grounds? Is it just a rallying cry? Some attempt to beef up some stocks or something? Once I stopped and thought about it in my own life experiences and realized it didn't match my life experiences, I got confused & concerned. Thoughts? Love you ladies! As always, we so appreciate the support... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
