How do young people participate in democratic societies? Youth Participation and Democracy: Cultures of Doing Society (Bristol UP, 2024) introduces the concept of ‘doing society' as a new theory of political action. Focused on Finnish youth, it innovatively blends cutting-edge empirical research with agenda-setting theoretical development. Redefining political action, the authors expand beyond traditional public-sphere, scaling from formal to informal and unconventional modes of engaging. The book captures diverse engagement from memes to social movements, from participatory budgeting to street parties and from sleek politicians to detached people in the margins. In doing so, it provides a holistic view of the ways in which young people participate (or do not participate) in society, and their role in cultural change. Learn more about your ad choices. Almost half of the world's population will be voting in elections in 2024. Young people, however, are less likely to join this large group of voters than older generations. Many believe this is because young people are less interested or engaged in politics and society. In this episode of Our World, Connected, host Christine Wilson challenges these assumptions about youth participation and reveals a more optimistic picture, backed by British Council Next Generation research.   Christine speaks with two young changemakers: Disty Winata, an Indonesian activist with experience at the G20, the UN, and the British Council's 90 Youth Voices for The Future programme, and Dhari Al-Malih, a geological engineer from Iraq who refuses to let violence define his home country and shares his story of using science for social good.   Join Christine and guests as they explore the innovative ways in which young people engage with societal issues, and ask: how can we better support young people and amplify their voices in policy decisions that will shape their futures? This event was hosted by Cambridge Family Law Centre (CFL) on 7 March 2024. Speakers: Professor Laura Lundy (Queen’s University Belfast), Professor Anne Barlow (University of Exeter) & Dr Jan Ewing (University of Cambridge) When parents separate, children have the right to a voice in the decision-making per their article 12, UNCRC rights. However, evidence shows that this right is rarely upheld in England and Wales. Professor Lundy has developed the ‘Lundy Model of Child Participation’ (‘the Lundy Model’), a core set of rights-based principles to ensure young people can participate meaningfully in decision-making. The model is core to the Irish National Framework on Child and Youth Participation. It has been adopted internationally, by the European Commission, World Health Organisation, World Vision and UNICEF. Professor Lundy presents the Lundy Model and Professor Barlow and Dr Ewing presents the findings of empirical research from the Wellcome Trust Centre-funded, ‘HeaRT Project’ to consider the extent to which child-inclusive mediation as currently practised in England and Wales is compliant with their article 12 rights and the mental health and well-being benefits to young people when they are given space, voice, audience and influence per the Lundy Model in child-inclusive mediation. In this episode of All Things Policy, Carl Jaison speaks to Sudhanshu Kaushik, author of “The Future is Ours: The Political Promise of India's Youth”. Sudhanshu is an international youth activist and the founder of Young India Foundation (YIF). With a focus on youth empowerment, the highlights of his work at YIF included initiatives registering over 2.5 million youth voters, lobbying with over 200 sitting MPs and five state governments to decrease the age to contest elections as an MP/MLA and building the Centre for Youth Policy. With a focus on youth rights and representation, Sudhanshu's book is at its very heart a passionate call to lower the age of candidacy from 25 to 21 — a campaign that covers all sides of the political spectrum and, if successful, will bring a huge number of India's young directly into the democratic process. The opinions of children and youth are often left out when it comes to political decision making processes. They don't have the right to vote, and policies that concern education and youth are usually made without involving them - although participation is one of pillars of the UN Declaration of Children's Rights. In our interview on Local Matters, the Ombudsman for Children and Youth Charel Schmit tells us how he sees the progresses that have been made and the issues that still need to be addressed to guarantee the right to participation for youth.

Tommy G Talks - Episode 144: Do Kids Need To Feel Failure? (The Importance of Youth Participation in Sport)   “Kids need to learn how to lose…and sport gives them that lesson.” As Chairman of The Jamie G Sporting Trust, I am always championing the importance of participation in sport for young people under the age of 18.  Sport can expose us to and teach us so much at an early age.  I believe that it is essential for children to understand that they don't always win.  It's beneficial to a young person to know that they can and will fail. That things won't always go to plan.  Within the safe frameworks of sport, this allows for resilience to be built and the ability to look inside. To notice how they feel about certain outcomes when they don't go they hoped/intended, and then what steps/actions/practice needs to be done in order to improve.  To learn that we can only ever control and account for our own efforts. Because it's actually not about winning and losing as such…it's more about self improvement, skill progression, expression, teamwork, dealing with pressure and building discipline. To feel good about it. To enjoy the experience, and to develop self belief.  A valuable lesson indeed. We also have the more obvious benefits such as the physical and mental health advantages and the social relationships and skill development too.  Participantion is on the decline. We must recognise the value and increase our effort and energy to ensure these lessons are being learned through schools, clubs and organisations.  By creating safe spaces for self expression, not hinging everything on the W/L outcome, but instead the lessons learned from “the taking part”. As adults, parents, coaches…what can we do to improve? How can we set a better example? How can we help to facilitate more positive exposure to sport at a young age?    What do you think?   Let me know and share your thoughst via Instagram   www.instagram.com/tommygentleman

Do we really know our target group(s) and their needs and preferences? How can we break the bubble and reach beyond the usual suspects in our work? What are the main tools in Design-Thinking, what is a user-centred approach, and how can it help us to improve the reach, quality, and impact of our products and services in youth work? And what does all this have to do with youth participation, inclusion, active citizenship, and the shaping of a better tomorrow? Meelika Hirmo is the coordinator at the SALTO Participation and Information Resource Centre located in Estonia. She is a product of youth work herself, one of her defining moments was her European Voluntary Service (EVS) that she performed in Austria in a youth information and youth support centre. In her career in international youth work, Meelika has always been concerned with enabling and empowering true youth participation and information, and with bringing a professional and user-centered management and communication approach to our sector. In this episode of “Gems of Youth Work”, Meelika Hirmo shares her passion and lessons learned of applying Design-Thinking approaches and Customer Journey Mapping tools to youth work and learning mobility programmes. How do we talk about youth participation in transitional justice in the Democratic Republic of Congo?

Why should we talk about youth participation in transitional justice? How can we theorize youth contributions to the field of transitional justice? From the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa to the range of student movements in South America, historically, youth have participated in protests for social and political change challenging impunity; addressing legacies of brutal regimes, and advancing an acknowledgment of dignity and respect for rights—all of which can be perceived as bottom-up contributions to transitional justice. However, despite their contributions to transitional justice, youth remain marginalized in literature and policy debates or are given only a limited and predetermined space to engage. In this episode, we zoom in on this topic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where there is ongoing momentum for the possibility of developing a national strategy on transitional justice. This impetus draws from the expressed interest of President Felix Tshisekedi in 2020 to deal with the brutal legacies of past and ongoing Congo conflicts. We explore the concept of 'collective participation,' which is understood as group mobilization in claimed spaces, and how it can help us understand youth participation in transitional justice in the DRC. Prof Tine Destrooper speaks with Christian Cirhigiri, Ph.D. researcher with Justice Visions, and Henry-Pacifique Mayala, a member of LUCHA, a youth movement created in 2012 in Goma which espouses the transitional justice discourse to demand State accountability for everyday political and socio-economic violations affecting the masses. “ … Another important challenge is the political leader's perceptions of the country's youth, rather than being considered as partners and collaborators at some points back in the years we were even assimilated to terrorist groups. Several of our comrades were sent to prison for years on zero rational basis.” Henry-Pacifique Mayala.
