When the work-specific euphemism "layoff" was first coined in the 19th century, it indicated "respite" or "relaxation." But layoffs in 2024 are anything but. It's almost impossible not to spiral after getting "let go," "phased out," "reduced in force." In a culture that makes hiring and company culture extremely personal, being laid off out of nowhere can feel like getting dumped by the love of your life... except the love of your life happens to be both your income source and, as it turns out, an entity that never actually cared about you that way. Doomy layoff vibes seem to pervade contemporary job discourse, but are layoffs as much of a crisis as they seem? How's a person to know the career path they chose wasn't one big mistake? And after getting laid off, how can one manage to drum up a sense of motivation ever again?? By one estimate, 40 percent of American workers get laid off at least once in their careers. And when that happens, companies will often say, "It's not personal. It has nothing to do with you or your performance. We're just changing priorities, making a strategic shift." It's like the business version of: "It's not you, it's me." And just like a breakup, it feels terrible. This happened to a man we're calling V, who was working at the same company as his husband when he got laid off. And for V, the experience felt shocking. It left him and his husband with a lot of unresolved questions. On today's show, the story of that layoff. And we help that couple get some answers by taking their questions to an HR expert who gives the low-down on lay-offs. Candice Lim is joined by Yowei Shaw (former co-host of NPR's Invisibilia) to discuss her new podcast Proxy, which takes listeners through the psychological aftermath of a layoff, starting with Shaw's own layoff from NPR. In March 2023, the public radio institution laid off approximately 10 percent of its staff, resulting in the cancellation of four podcasts, including Invisibilia. Shaw, along with her team, was working on an upcoming season of the podcast when they were suddenly without jobs. More than a year later, Shaw is back with Proxy, which investigates layoff culture and asks questions like “Is there a good way to lay off employees?” and “Why did my HR representative smile when they laid me off?” This podcast is produced by Se'era Spragley Ricks, Daisy Rosario, Candice Lim and Rachelle Hampton. Michael Tubbs is the former mayor of Stockton and the author of the upcoming book, The Deeper the Roots: A Memoir of Hope and Home.Stockton is representative of where California intersects—or where California collides. You have this tension between rural and agricultural and urban. I remember telling people I was from Stockton, and everyone thought it was a community with a lot of farms. I was like, “I ain't never seen no farm!” It's a city with city issues but a very agricultural background. That place has given me an appreciation for salt-of-the-earth-type folks—folks who may not have gone to college, folks who may not work in tech or the creative economy, but are still smart, are still important, still matter.  Notes and references from this episode: What is California? newsletter on SubstackStockton on My Mind, directed by Marc LevinInvisibilia: The Chaos Machine, by Yowei Shaw and Kia Miakka NatisseThe Deeper the Roots: A Memoir of Hope and Home, by Michael Tubbs (published Nov. 16, 2021)Anna Malaika Tubbs - Author siteCompeting Voices: A Critical History of Stockton, California, by Ronald Isetti“Oldest gurdwara in US,” by Asha Seth & Ramesh Seth, Spectrum - Tribune IndiaStockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration (SEED)SEED Data Analysis and DashboardEditorial: Now, for your local fake news…, Los Angeles TimesThe Rev. From Amy Tan to Michelle Kwan to Constance Wu, there are many Asian American women who have achieved great success and are upheld as leading figures of the community. But sometimes (and especially online), Asian male support is muted or reluctant. Is it resentment at seeing women in power at all? Or does it have anything to do with the feeling that only by closely allying with whiteness can Asian women succeed at the highest levels in America, thus leaving Asian men behind? Is that what’s behind some of the online harassment of Asian women by some Asian men? The Philadelphia Student Union's On Blast team is honored to feature guest work from GW Radio, produced by PASS Program (Preparing for, Attaining, & Sustaining Success) at George Washington High School and JEVS Human Services (with support from Yowei Shaw & The School of Rock). Up with youth media for all! GW Radio is an original mini-podcast series produced by seniors at George Washington High School. After identifying many possible issues through a community mapping exercise, students chose the topic of education for their series because they all have a lot to say about what they want in their schools.  Students engaged in a story-storming process to identify their own stories as well as other stories that they would like to feature. In small groups, they planned, recorded, and edited eight episodes exploring various aspects of their educational experiences in Philadelphia. Throughout this series, you will hear students share stories that express both positive interactions in school as well as injustices that they demand be made right. As you tune in to GW Radio, we hope that you are inspired by the strength and vision of students in Philadelphia and challenged to take action to improve our schools.
