Michael Fassnacht has built a career on taking risks, thinking ahead, and, above all, showing up. As the Chief Growth Officer and President of Chicagoland at Clayco, one of the largest design-build firms in the country, he has a front-row seat to the future of real estate and economic development. But his path to this leadership role was not a straight shot. It was shaped by international experiences, deep civic involvement, and a willingness to step into the unknown.Growing up in Germany, Michael's early years were defined by curiosity and ambition. After spending time in Africa as a missionary, he returned to Europe to begin his professional career with Lufthansa. The corporate world introduced him to high-stakes decision-making, but it also reinforced a critical lesson. Success is not just about talent. It is about showing up and putting yourself in the right rooms. His move to the United States was driven by something deeply personal, his wife. With their future together in mind, he left Frankfurt and started fresh in San Francisco. There, he launched one of the first SaaS companies in the marketing tech space, an endeavor that proved both challenging and rewarding. Five years later, after successfully selling the company, another opportunity knocked. This time in Chicago.Stepping into a leadership role at one of the world's most renowned advertising firms, Foote, Cone & Belding, Michael quickly became a key figure in Chicago's business landscape. His civic engagement grew as well, leading him to serve on various boards, including the Chicago Public Library Board and the Civic Consulting Alliance. These roles eventually led to a pivotal call. Mayor Rahm Emanuel asked him to help pitch Chicago for Amazon's HQ2.That bid, while unsuccessful, ignited something in him. The process of selling Chicago to the world opened his eyes to the broader impact of economic development. It was not just about business. It was about shaping a city, creating opportunities, and building a legacy that outlived a single project. That realization led to his time as Chief Marketing Officer for the City of Chicago and later as CEO of World Business Chicago, where he played a crucial role in driving investment and innovation. Now at Clayco, Michael is bringing his global perspective to real estate development. With projects that span manufacturing, data centers, and life sciences, the firm is quite literally building the future. But beyond the numbers and high-profile deals, his approach remains deeply personal. Mentorship, leadership, and the philosophy of showing up.“The most important advice I give young people nowadays is show up,” he says. “Leave your bedroom, leave your house, leave your apartment. You have to go to meetings, you have to go to events. You have to meet people face to face. You have to show up with your work, with your writing, with your thinking, with your voice.”This mindset is not just advice. It is how Michael has built his career. Whether in boardrooms, on construction sites, or in civic leadership meetings, he understands that no amount of preparation can replace the value of being present. It is a lesson that applies across industries, from aspiring entrepreneurs to corporate executives looking to make an impact. For those looking to follow in his footsteps, Michael emphasizes one more thing. Maintaining emotional independence from work. “You cannot give power over your emotional well-being to the corporation you're working for,” he says. Dedication is important, but so is the ability to step back, reflect, and ensure that success does not come at the cost of personal fulfillment.Through all his ventures, from pitching billion-dollar investments to shaping the next generation of leaders, Michael Fassnacht remains a student of life. Always learning, always building, and always showing up.

Claudia Miller was the first person in her family to be educated beyond the eighth grade. She was determined to check off all the boxes: excel in school, attend a good university, land a great-paying job, and live the American dream. Unfortunately, it did not go exactly as she had planned. When she graduated college, Claudia had no job offers waiting for her. She ended up just taking a job that was available. This experience propelled her on a five-year journey, determined to learn what was necessary to find satisfying work, grow her income, and build her network. Claudia worked in several industries and went on to earn her master's degree in public health policy and administration. From there, she started a coaching business and, in 2020, became a full-time entrepreneur. As a Guatemalan-American, Claudia struggled to find her way in corporate America. She relied on education to rise above her humble beginnings, and now she teaches other women how to become successful. Today, she is a career coach for women in technology, and she's helped her clients land fulfilling senior-level jobs. Claudia partners with companies and organizations to identify rising stars, providing strategy, insights, and support to develop a leadership and talent pipeline focusing on women and women of color. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, follow Claudia's journey and work: Claudia has partnered with World Business Chicago in developing a workforce development strategy in coordination with the City of Chicago's efforts to decrease unemployment rates for persons of color. Leave it to Chicago's Deputy Mayor, Samir Mayekar, as well as World Business Chicago's President and CEO, Michael Fassnacht, to teach us about Chicago and its growing life sciences ecosystem. Samir is a tri-sector leader who has played executive roles in public, private and nonprofit sectors. He served in the U.S. government during the Obama administration; and prior to his work with Mayor Lori Lightfoot on economic development, Samir was the CEO of NanoGraf Technologies–an international company built around Northwestern battery technology. Simultaneous to his role as President/CEO of WBC, Michael is the Chief Marketing Officer for the City of Chicago. His goals for inclusive economic development and his talent for initiating engagement through creative marketing were what made him such an effective President and CEO of FCB Chicago; they continue to make him a phenomenal leader at WBC.

Launching software products to market is very hard. But adding a hardware component makes it 10 times harder. Not only do you have the typical product and market challenges of software, but you also have the complexity of building a physical product, which can take a long time; it’s capital intensive, it might require specialized equipment, and it requires access to a supply-chain network you might not be a part of. This is why I’m so excited to be joined by my guest today, Haven Allen! Haven is the CEO of mHUB; a startup accelerator focusing on hardware and software products — or, as Haven calls them — hard-tech. In our conversation, we discuss the complexities of bringing hard-tech products to market, the role that accelerators like mHUB play in this space, and how large companies should engage with startups to create a win-win partnership. Additionally, we also discuss the impact of COVID-19 in accelerating the innovation cycle of many industries including Healthcare, Energy, and Manufacturing. Whether you work at a hard-tech startup or at an enterprise that interacts with hard-tech startups, this is a fantastic episode that no Product Leader should miss! Episode Details: with Haven Allen: “There are these great ideas out there and they just need a little bit more support, a little bit more capital, [and] stronger connections with industry to really accelerate their teams.” — Haven Allen About Haven Allen: Haven Allen, Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of mHUB, is an entrepreneur and technology strategist who most recently concentrated on growing the manufacturing industry and strengthening its community throughout Chicagoland. As an economic development strategist at World Business Chicago, he directed the Advisory Council for Chicagoland Manufacturing through which he established and led the implementation of an economic development agenda to support growth and job creation in the manufacturing sector. During his graduate education, Haven served as a Mayoral Fellow at the City of Chicago. As a fellow, he provided research and analysis on policy initiatives dealing with infrastructure, electricity markets, and municipal marketing. Topics We Discuss in this Episode: About Haven Allen’s background in tech About mHUB and Allen’s role as a CEO What “hard-tech” is Hard-tech startup best practices How mHUB leadership developed and shaped a robust venture capital ecosystem Haven’s insights on solving substantial problems in the advanced manufacturing space The holistic approach that Haven takes as CEO of mHUB How COVID-19 is impacting startups in the hard-tech industry mHUB’s business model and how it has enabled the different stages of the lifecycle to get to pilot and beyond mHUB’s roadmap and how they’re working toward creating more opportunities and jobs Other industries with the potential to leverage hard-tech What helps founders and startups with their positioning early on with innovations that they could bring to market Whether there has been more of a willingness from industries and companies to take a chance on hard-tech and “unproven technologies” Why you need access to capital in order to scale up and accelerate your business How being an accelerator helps with the in-between challenges of doing small testing runs of hardware How the Chicago ecosystem has been an amazing asset for mHUB What a healthy, fruitful relationship looks like between a startup and a large corporation Haven’s tips and advice for founders and Product Leaders Product Leader Tip of the Week: Haven’s advice to product leaders who are working on product innovation that requires both software and hardware: Know the problem and know the market you’re trying to attack. Create products that are going to live on for more than five to 10 years. This will require you to invest in technology that’s at the bleeding edge but this will give your product more longevity and future potential. Create feedback loops, find ways to accelerate your path to market, and leverage existing technologies. You also have to take your product to market; you can’t engineer something forever!
