Tesla starts activating new charge port heater Tesla China Demand Is Higher Than Eve Electric car sales UK Lynk & Co’s compact SUV costs €500 a month All 2,200 Polestar 2 Delivered So Far Will Be Recalled   Show #900   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 5th October. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   VOLVO XC40 BEGINS PRODUCTION "Volvo announced Thursday that production of its first fully electric vehicle, the XC40 T8 Recharge, has started in Ghent, Belgium." says Green Car Reports: "The electric SUV is bound for the U.S. starting late this year, and in terms of pricing, performance, and packaging, it’s shaping up to be one of the closest rivals yet to the Tesla Model Y. Volvo Cars North America told Green Car Reports and a group of journalists Thursday that while demonstration cars are likely to arrive at many dealerships in December, first deliveries won’t likely start until January. The Recharge was engineered and developed concurrently with the Polestar 2 by the same Volvo-led engineering teams in Sweden, and with the same designer, Thomas Ingenlath.  Both models have 78-kwh (75-kwh usable) battery packs configured into a ‘T’ under the back seat and drive tunnel, plus front and rear 150-kw motors. Volvo promises a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds for the 402-hp dual-motor vehicle, as well as an expected range of more than 200 miles."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1129821_2021-volvo-xc40-recharge-electric-suv-deliveries-by-january   BMW IX3 GOES IN TO PRODUCTION "Unlike many other car makers, BMW has decided that the way to get punters in to electric cars is to make the electric bit a powertrain option – alongside ICCE, Hybrid and PHEV – in the belief that familiarity will be a bigger factor than novelty. That’s why the new BMW iX3, the BEV X3, is being built on the same production line as the ICE X3s in Shenyang, China. And production is now underway." according to CarsUK.net: "But despite production of the iX3 already starting, the UK is going to have to wait until summer 2021 for delivery, but if you do want to jump in to an iX3 you can order in the UK, despite the wait, but you’ll need quite deep pockets. The only models available to order are the iX3 Premier Edition which costs a thumping £62k, with the iX3 Premier Edition coming in at £65k."   https://www.carsuk.net/electric-bmw-ix3-goes-in-to-production-but-still-wont-reach-the-uk-until-summer-2021/   CITROEN E-SPACETOURER AND PEUGEOT E-TRAVELLER AVAILABLE "Peugeot and Citroen are taking orders for their pure electric MPVs - the e-Traveller and e-SpaceTourer respectively. Both models share a platform and powertrain components, with a range of up to 143 miles on a charge quoted. Each use a 100 KW electric motor powered by a 50 kW battery. This is able to be charged at up to 7 kW AC or 100 kW from ultra-rapid DC charge points" according to Next Green Car: "The Peugeot e-Traveller seats up to eight passengers - two in the front with two rows of three seats behind - while the Citroen e-SpaceTourer seats up to nine. Retail customers will get an eight-seater configuration, but a Business trim is aimed at professional users, with three rows of three seats, alongside materials designed for added durability. Prices are available for Citroen's e-SpaceTourer, with Feel starting at £46,250 and Business from £45,600. Deliveries are expected to start in November."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9012/citroen-espacetourer-and-peugeot-etraveller-available-to-order/   JEEP RENEGADE 4XE REVIEW "Jeep’s first plug-in hybrid will certainly stir up some mild interest in certain circles – perhaps you’re a company car driver who likes a spot of greenlaning at the weekends? " says BBC's Top Gear: "first up is the Renegade 4xe (pronounced four-by-e, incidentally). You’ve got a 60bhp electric motor and 11.4kWh battery turning the rear wheels and a turbocharged 1.3-litre 4cyl petrol at the front that comes in two power outputs depending on trim level.  It’s 4WD, but there’s no mechanical connection from front to back, it’s all achieved through electronic wizardry. It’s all very smoothly integrated and the car always keeps enough juice available to power the back wheels when the four-wheel drive is called upon. The Renegade 4xe will take basically whatever you throw under it right in its stride – a shame, because no one will ever use it. Jeep assures us hardcore trailheads will lap it up, but who wants to hold up a greenlaning party while you charge your batteries?"   https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/jeep/renegade/13-turbo-4xe-phev-240-trailhawk-5dr-auto/first-drive   TESLA TO ACQUIRE GERMAN BATTERY ASSEMBLY MAKER "Tesla Inc TSLA.O has agreed to acquire German ATW Automation, a supplier assembling battery modules and packs for the auto industry, a source familiar with the transaction said on Friday." according to a Reuters Reports today: "ATW, a subsidiary of Canadian ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc ATA.TO, was on the brink of liquidation due to a slump in orders, German media reported in September. ATS on Sept. 25 announced that certain assets and employees at one of its Germany-based units would be sold and transferred to a third party, without disclosing the name of the company. ATW, based in western Germany, has about 120 employees and has completed more than 20 battery production lines for international automakers, according to ATS’ website."   https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-ats-automation-germany/tesla-to-acquire-german-battery-assembly-maker-source-idUSKBN26N2VG   WHAT DOES THE TESLA SELFIE CAM CAPTURE? "A well known Tesla white hat hacker, known simply as “green” on Twitter (@greentheonly), has revealed — to some extent — what the Tesla selfie cam is watching out for. What’s the Tesla selfie cam? It’s a camera right behind the rearview mirror in a Tesla vehicle." writes CleanTechnica: "Elon Musk has said before that the selfie cam is not being used yet, and that it’s in the cars for when they become self-driving cars/robotaxis. Despite not being in use yet, though, “green” has identified what this sole interior camera is set up to watch and take notes about. Naturally, at a stage where the Tesla isn’t yet capable of 100% self-driving service unmonitored by a human, it could be useful to see if the driver’s eyes are closed or looking down away from the road. The system could then give a warning — perhaps a loud warning — that the driver should open their eyes or look up or else the car will pull over and park itself."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/10/05/what-does-the-tesla-selfie-cam-capture/   TESLA STARTS ACTIVATING NEW CHARGE PORT HEATER "Tesla has started activating the elusive new charge port heater in Model 3 and Model Y, but it’s unclear who has it in their Model 3." says Electrek: "Now Tesla Model 3 and Model Y owners are starting to receive an additional feature called “Charge Port Inlet Heater” in the update 2020.40. So far, only owners of recent Model 3 vehicles are reporting receiving the new features."   Tesla Says: "Your car can now use the charge port inlet heater to help defrost the inside of the charge port. The charge port inlet heater can be activated in cold ambient temperatures by enabling preconditioning using the mobile app, activating the rear defrost button on the vehicle’s touchscreen, or preconditioning the vehicle using scheduled departure."   https://electrek.co/2020/10/01/tesla-charge-port-heater-unclear-who-has-it/   TESLA CHINA DEMAND IS HIGHER THAN EVE "Tesla has seen a large rise in sales after introducing some price cuts for Model 3 in China. The price cut affected two variants from the MIC (Made In China) Model 3. The standard range plus version was reduced from ¥271,550 to ¥249,000. This is equivalent to a $3500 cut. The price cut for the long-range rear-wheel-drive version was of approximately $5000." reports Torque News: "Producing and delivering so many vehicles will definitely be an important logistical challenge and if Tesla is unable to keep up with the pace of orders customers will start becoming dissatisfied by long delivery times."   https://www.torquenews.com/11663/tesla-china-demand-higher-ever-beijing-after-model-3-price-cuts   ELECTRIC CAR SALES UK "The UK new-car market has suffered its worst September since twice-yearly plate changes were introduced, but as in previous months there was strong growth in the proportion of car sales that were electric or hybrid." says Driving Electric: "Pure-electric car sales went from 7,704 in September 2019 to 21,903 in September 2020 – a 184% increase. Year-to-date, 66,611 pure-electric cars have been sold in the UK so far in 2020, which is up from the 25,097 that had been sold by the same point in 2019. While the Tesla Model 3 sold strongly through lockdown, it has since fallen out of the overall top 10 most registered models. The Vauxhall Corsa (now available in pure-electric Corsa-e guise) took the top spot in July, slipped to fifth in August, but was back on top in September."   https://www.drivingelectric.com/news/678/electric-car-sales-uk-near-7-market-share-september-2020   LYNK & CO’S COMPACT SUV COSTS €500 A MONTH "Car company Lynk & Co has finally revealed the details of its hybrid ownership model, which lets people subscribe to its Lynk & Co 01 compact SUV for €500 per month, with the option of renting the vehicle to other Lynk & Co members to begin earning that fee back." writes The Verge: "The company’s 01 hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars will begin shipping to European members in April. The €500 membership fee can also be split between multiple individuals, allowing a group of friends in the same city to share a single car. The monthly fee includes insurance and servicing by the Volvo dealer network. (Digital keys can also be shared with Volvo, to let its employees retrieve your car and return it when servicing is complete.) The monthly fee doesn’t cover the cost of fuel or electricity, however. Paid memberships can be canceled with one month’s notice."   ALL 2,200 POLESTAR 2 DELIVERED SO FAR WILL BE RECALLED "We have already told you that Polestar 2 cars are stopping in mysterious circumstances. Drivers either get an error message or nothing at all, and their cars stop working. Nothing is able to reboot them, and the vehicles have to be towed for repair. Some are waiting for more than a month. The Swedish publication Dager Industri discovered the reason and that the company will recall all 2,200 units of the Polestar 2 delivered so far." says InsideEVs   https://insideevs.com/news/447089/all-2200-polestar-2-delivered-recalled/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles   You can listen to all 899 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSYMONS.CO.UK – THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE SPECIALIST (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRENT KINGSFORD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JOHN C SOLAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NICHOLAS MILLER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #734   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 31st March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   CLEANER AIR IN CHINA, ITALY, UNITED STATES OBSERVED "The Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak has seen widespread disruption of manufacturing operations as well as trade and sporting events worldwide, however it appears there is a silver lining of sorts in the wake of significantly reduced movement; satellite data appears to show reduced nitrogen dioxide emissions across the United States, China and Italy." says PaulTan.org: "California became the first state in the United States to issue a shelter-in-place order effective from March 19, while many cities have made their decision to shut down earlier, according to Gizmodo. Los Angeles marked a clear reduction in pollution owing the the city’s car culture, the website noted, meanwhile in the northeast region, New York City also marked a significant reduction. In Europe, Italy has also seen air quality improvements, also with a reduction in nitrogen dioxide emissions over the span of a month, from February 8 to March 7.   https://paultan.org/2020/03/31/cleaner-air-in-china-italy-united-states-observed-potential-impact-of-electric-vehicles-shown-report/   ENVISION SOLAR DELIVERS FOUR EV ARC™ EV CHARGING STATIONS Charlotte, N.C. purchased four of the Company’s EV ARC™ solar-powered EV charging stations for public and city use. Each off-grid unit includes an emergency power panel and can be relocated for city events or in case of emergency power needs. EV ARC™ DC fast charging systems provide up to 1,100 miles per day. The EV ARC™ system’s solar electrical generation is enhanced by EnvisionTrak™ (patented) which causes the solar array to follow the sun, generating up to 25 percent more electricity than a fixed array. The energy is stored in the EV ARC™ product’s on-board energy storage for charging day or night, and to provide EV charging and emergency power during grid failure. The EV ARC™ product is a permanent solution that provides Level I, Level II and DC Fast Charging, but because it requires no trenching, foundations or installation work of any kind, is deployed in minutes and can be moved to a new location with ease.   https://finance.yahoo.com/news/envision-solar-delivers-four-ev-120010277.html   ASAHI TANKER ORDERS WORLD'S FIRST ZERO-EMISSION ELECTRIC PROPULSION BUNKER TANKERS "Japanese marine transportation company Asahi Tanker Co. Ltd. on Friday (27 March) said it has decided to build two of the world’s first zero-emission electric propulsion bunker tankers." according to Manifold Times: "Asahi states the tankers will utilise the “e5 tanker” design by e5 Laboratories Inc and construction is expected to be completed in March 2022 for the first tanker and March 2023 for the second. The vessels are pure battery tankers powered by large-capacity lithium-ion batteries, and are anticipated to enter Tokyo Bay as marine fuel supply vessels. Both vessels are designed to completely run on batteries to achieve zero emissions from carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulfur oxide (SOx), and soot to reduce impact on the health of the crew onboard and the environment."   https://www.manifoldtimes.com/news/asahi-tanker-orders-worlds-first-zero-emission-electric-propulsion-bunker-tankers/   AS VOLVO GOES ELECTRIC, HERE’S HOW IT’S MAKING ITS BATTERIES TOP-NOTCH Ulrik Persson, who leads traction-battery development at Volvo: "Up until now, we have bought complete battery systems. Starting with the BEV, it's a whole different ballgame," Persson told us. "Of course, it's possible to outsource that as well, working very closely with the supplier, but from our side we felt it was a strategic decision to take ownership of this new component. It's definitely the most expensive component in the vehicle, and as it's integral to the crash structure of the vehicle it really makes sense.""   Ars Technica says: "That means there's no shared components or cells between the 10.4kWh pack in a Volvo PHEV and the 78kWh pack that will power the XC40 Recharge (as well as the Polestar 2). For European and US XC40s, those packs will use LG Chem pouch cells, but China-bound BEVs will contain prismatic cells courtesy of CATL. The rapid pace of development applies equally to software—just witness how many more miles Tesla can eke out of a kilowatt-hour today compared to a few years ago. Persson confirmed that Volvo will use the same approach of collecting real-world data and using it to roll out improvements via over-the-air updates. Well before that stage, his team engages in extensive testing of battery tech at the factory, using Volvo's new $60 million in-house battery testing lab."   https://arstechnica.com/cars/2020/03/as-volvo-goes-electric-heres-how-its-making-its-batteries-top-notch/   FASTNED 2019 RESULTS REVEAL HIGH GROWTH OF CHARGING BUSINESS "Fastned, the Dutch fast-charging network, closed the year 2019 with total revenues of around €6.4 million, out of which €4.5 million was related directly to charging (up 175%)." reports InsideEVs: "Over the 12 months of 2019, the company delivered nearly 8 GWh of electricity (up 175%) to over 42,800 active customers (up 139%). The growth looks amazing, although the ongoing expansion is also reflected in €12 million of total net losses (92% higher than in 2018). The network consists of 114 stations (as of the end of 2019), installed mostly in the Netherlands (98) and Germany (15) plus a single station in the UK. The average revenue per single station is currently at nearly €40,000 per year, by delivering some 70 MWh of electricity."   https://insideevs.com/news/407042/fastned-2019-results-high-growth/   BUFFETT-BACKED BYD TO SUPPLY ELECTRIC-CAR PARTS TO RIVALS "BYD Co., the Chinese electric-vehicle maker backed by Warren Buffett, will start offering a full suite of EV components to rivals and aspiring auto manufacturers to diversify its revenue sources amid sputtering car demand." writes Bloomberg today: "Among the parts that the Shenzhen-based company makes and now sells are electric-car batteries, powertrains and lights, founder Wang Chuanfu said in an online press conference on Sunday. BYD, China’s biggest maker of vehicles powered by alternative energy for the past six years, will use the brand name FinDreams for the parts business. Last year, BYD signed an agreement with Toyota Motor Corp. on EV battery supply and joint product development, with the companies setting up an jointly owned venture this month. BYD also cooperates with Daimler AG on making Denza brand electric vehicles."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-29/buffett-backed-byd-to-supply-electric-car-parts-to-rivals   TROPOS MOTORS BEGINS PRODUCTION IN EUROPE "The European branch of Californian electric vehicle manufacturer Tropos Motors has started manufacturing electric commercial vehicles in Germany with Mosolf Group in the city of Herne." according to electrive: "In future, up to 3,000 compact commercial vehicles in the L7E-CU category are to be produced here annually. The light transporters feature a small turning circle, adaptable body options and easy charging at domestic sockets.  The vehicles named Able are 3.70 metres long and 1.40 metres wide. The net payload important for transporters is 565 kilograms. A useful detail for use in city centres or narrow factory premises is that the Able has a turning circle of less than four meters. The Tropos Able ST is the standard model with an AGM battery for a range of 80 kilometres and a top speed of 40 km/h. The Able XR is equipped with a lithium-ion battery that lasts for 105 to 260 kilometres, depending on the model. The XR has a top speed of 85 km/h."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/03/31/tropos-motors-begins-production-in-europe/   TESLA MODEL Y POWER READING SHOWS MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE CAN GET EVEN QUICKER "Tesla Model Y Performance is higher than that of the Model 3 Performance, according to measurements of power output from the vehicle’s dual electric motors." according to Teslarati: "Brooks Weisblat of the DragTimes YouTube channel measured each vehicle’s power output through a Bluetooth-enabled OBD2 interceptor dongle and the “scan me Tesla” app. Weisblat’s measurements of both motors on each vehicle reveal that both the Front and Rear motors on the Model Y have a higher energy output than that of the Model 3, despite them being the same. The front motor of the Model Y has a higher output by 18 kW, while the rear motor of the Model Y is producing 15.5 kW more."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-electric-motors-power-output/   THIS CHICAGOAN IS ON A MISSION TO HELP AUTO DEALERS SELL ELECTRIC VEHICLES "When Chicagoan Neda Deylami decided she wanted to buy an electric vehicle, she shopped around at Nissan and Chevy dealerships hoping to get help from salespeople in making her decision. But the experience was frustrating. She felt she knew more than the salespeople about the Nissan Leaf" according to energynews.us: "She more recently traded her Leaf in and bought a Tesla, a totally different experience. As much as she likes her Tesla, she said she feels strongly that to promote the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, other dealers need to become knowledgeable and supportive of them. Deylami is developing a training and curriculum that she hopes to present to up to 10 dealerships this year, while also staying in touch with salespeople about their work and what they need to better sell electric vehicles."     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   With VW ID.3 facing software rewrites, how hard should we be on legacy auto makers when they hit EV speedbumps?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 242 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #699   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 16th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Welcome to new Producer KEVIN HEISLER   Welcome to new Producer JULIE   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   CANADA TO SPEND $8 MILLION ON 160 DC CHARGERS IN ONTARIO "There is a lot going on in Canada in terms of fast-charging infrastructure as Petro-Canada launched a coast-to-coast network, Tesla completed its coast-to-coast Supercharging highway and Electrify Canada is expanding." reports InsideEVs: "The latest news is that the Government of Canada will provide an additional $8 million CAD for more fast chargers in Ontario. The plan is to build 160 chargers at 73 locations, which would be $110,000 per site and $50,000 per charger on average. The investment is part of the strategic plan to switch to zero-emission vehicles by 2040. Natural Resources Canada so far provided support for more than 830 fast chargers (built or under construction)."   https://insideevs.com/news/398891/canada-8-million-160-chargers-ontario/   NEW TESLA MODEL S LONG RANGE PLUS CLAIMS 390 MILES "A new Tesla Model S Long Range Plus variant has a claimed driving range of 390 miles, according to the Tesla website. There is also a Long Range Plus version of the Model X SUV, which is rated at 351 miles of range." says Car And Driver: "Tesla has not provided any details on how it added the additional range, and the only change we can see on the Model S is a new set of 19-inch standard wheels with a so-called Tempest design. We do know that there is some sort of software tweak involved, as Musk tweeted that the company will roll out a software update for existing Model S and Model X owners to unlock extra range."   Engadget says: "You could theoretically drive from New York City to Pittsburgh with enough battery life left to go on a brief tour. The Model X, meanwhile, is now estimated to drive 351 miles on a charge instead of the earlier 328 miles. The question is whether or not these improvements will translate to further gains for cars like the Model 3 and Model Y -- extra range at the high end only matters so much if just a fraction of Tesla's customers can see the benefits."   https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a30941743/tesla-model-s-long-range-plus/   https://www.engadget.com/2020/02/15/tesla-extends-model-s-x-range   EV RANGE-TOPPER CARVES OUT NEW ROLE FOR KIA "A lofty, high-performance electric vehicle currently headed down the Kia product pipeline is, like all EVs, something of a gamble. For the mainstream Korean automaker, it’s also a departure." according to The Truth About Cars: "Kia marketing chief Carlos Lahoz called the model a halo. The Imagine, he said, is “as significant in showing our EV capability for the future as the Stinger was for showing how far Kia had progressed when it was launched.” Herrera has talked up the possibility of getting electric supercar builder Rimac on board, thus ensuring an excess of performance."   Autoblog said: "The extent of Rimac's involvement remains a mystery. Similarly, we don't know how Kia defines the term "super-high performance," and whether it alludes to straight-line speed, Tail of the Dragon-taming handling, or both. The architecture will be compatible with an 800-volt electrical system that charges the battery from 20% to 80% in 20 minutes"   https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2020/02/a-halo-with-value-ev-range-topper-carves-out-new-role-for-kia/   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/14/kia-imagine-concept-taps-rimac/     2017 NISSAN LEAF THE ONLY EV TO RECEIVE DEPENDABILITY AWARD Leading consumer advocate J.D. Power recognized the Nissan LEAF with top honors in their 2020 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). Nissan LEAF ranked as the top performing non-premium vehicle and at the top of the compact car segment with a score of 83 problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100). The Nissan LEAF is the first pure electric vehicle to win an overall segment award in the history of the VDS study.   PORSCHE DELIVERS FIRST TAYCAN 4S "Porsche has started deliveries of the Taycan 4S, the less expensive version starting at $104,000, of its new premium electric car." says Electrek: "Performance battery: a 79.2kWh pack with a total output of 390kW and a 225kW charging capacity. Performance battery Plus: a 93.4kWh pack, same as Turbo, but limited to 420kW versus 560kW for Turbo versions. It has a 270kW charging capacity. The smaller battery pack results in a range of 407 km (253 miles), and the bigger one should result in 463 km (288 miles) on a single charge based on the WLTP standard."   https://electrek.co/2020/02/14/porsche-delivers-first-taycan-4s/   TESLA IS STARTING TO ADD THIRD-PARTY CHARGING STATIONS “This spring break, we have changed your navigation to show more charging options in Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Choose the charging symbol at the bottom right of your touch screen, scroll down and select a Supercharger, Destination Charger or public charger to add it to your route. Public chargers have different access requirements and you might need to download a app like Plugsurfing and create an account to make use of the charger. This functionality will be improved in future software updates and we will continuously add new chargers.”   TESLA UNLOCKS REAR HEATED SEATS FOR MODEL 3 SR AND SR PLUS "Tesla is offering rear heated seats for the Model 3 Standard Range and Standard Range Plus as a $300 upgrade that can be activated through an over-the-air software update." says Joey at Teslarati: "The latest update follows a request by Tesla Model 3 owner who asked Elon Musk if a cold-weather OTA update can also activate the rear heated seats. Model 3 variants all have the necessary hardware for heated seats, enabling Tesla to easily manage feature activation through software. While rear heated seats were originally active on early Tesla Model 3 variants with the Partial Premium Interior and above, the company ultimately disabled the feature on Model 3 Standard Range and Standard Range Plus."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-rear-heated-seats-standard-range/   THE UK'S FIRST SUPPLY OF 1,500 VW ID.3 "If you have an order placed on Volkswagen's all-new electric car - or indent to put a deposit down soon - you might be waiting a while for it to arrive." reports ThisIsMoney.co.uk: "Alan Day Group, which was given just 35 of the first UK ID.3 deliveries, said its allocation was bought up within an hour of being made available online in May last year.  These cars will be arriving with customers at the end of March - around the 28 or 29, This is Money has been told - as Volkswagen's ramps-up efforts to sell plug-in models to repair the damage to its reputation as a result of the diesel emissions cheating scandal."   https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-8004807/The-UKs-supply-1-500-VW-ID-3-electric-cars-sold-TWO-DAYS.html   TESLA STEPS INTO THE UTILITY SPACE WITH NEW GRID CONTROLLER PATENT "This week, Tesla locked in a new patent for a distributed electrical grid management system, with capability to control everything from massive grid-scale energy storage installations down to your washing machine to keep everything humming along nicely." reports CleanTechnica: "The new patent is a natural extension of Tesla’s Grid Controller solution that manages grid-scale assets, but the new solution takes it a step further by folding in Tesla’s in-home solutions, and then some. The result proposed in the new patent is an end-to-end distributed grid management system with the capability to identify and manage assets on the grid, in businesses, and in homes as a means of balancing the grid more effectively. It leverages each asset on the grid as a part of the overall system."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/02/14/tesla-steps-into-the-utility-space-with-new-grid-controller-patent/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   JAN from EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM We had our most extended EV road trip in the summer of 2018. We started in Halden in Norway. Went down the Swedish west coast to Gothenborg and took the ferry to Denmark for a party. Then we headed for Leipzig for visiting the BMW site there and look at the i3 and i8 production. Next stop was Prague before travelling to Munich for some talks whit Ionity and a visit at BMW Welt. On our way to Italy, we drove through Austria and Switzerland before crossed the Stelvio Pass (2.757 m). When in Italy we visited Garda, Venezia, Firenze, Toscana and Genova before a short visit in Franch and Chamonix. On our trip home we also visited and charged in Luxembourg, Belgium and the Nederlands. On our three weeks journey, we drove some 6500 km in 12 countries (included Norway). As a charging nerd, I tested charging my BMW i3 (94AH) in all the countries. The largest barrier for travelling long distances in an EV is in our head.   DAVID PARTINGTON The longest trip I ever did was 500miles each way from London to Dundee in my 24kwh Nissan Leaf back in December 2018. Each way, it took over 13 hours and 10 rapids to cover the 500miles - not really a journey for the faint hearted, definitely a bit of an adventure - but in some ways I can't wait to try it again, perhaps later on this year, and see if I can do it more quickly in the summer, and with the benefit of there being a lot more rapids in place now, which means you can take bigger 'bets' for each leg between charges.   JON KNODEL The longest road trip I’ve done in my Tesla Model 3 RW Long Range was 550 miles each way. From Santa Barbara, CA to the northeast forests of California. A robust fast charging network is the cure for any “range anxiety” or adventure to remote forests! Charging was slowed since I went 100%, so I could have a climate control at night while our ICE car compadres bundled up I their tents and trailers. I did have to stop at a Gas station though... I accumulated so many bugs from driving California’s Central Valley my autopilot cameras and human cameras were blocked. I’m considering a few longer trips as well. Electrons know no limits!   Jim McLaren When I had my Nissan Leaf I did a number of 400 mile road trips, but when I picked up my new Tesla Model 3, I decided I would be more adventurous. In November I set off on a 1200 mile journey from Falkirk, just outside Edinburgh and drove to Spain, ran the San Sebastian marathon, had a coffee and a sandwich then drove home again - sleeping in the car on the way. The abundance of Tesla supercharger stations made charging very easy and the level 2 autonomous features of the car meant that it did over 90% of the distance driven itself, taking a lot of the strain out the drive in what was mainly poor weather conditions.   ANDERS HOVE Last year I did three 1000-mile EV trips on 3 continents to check out the charging infrastructure: in California, from Beijing to Inner Mongolia, and in Germany and France (the latter was the longest of the three). But this is evolving so quickly that I'd like to do it again. I'm very interested in the route you are considering, since for my European trip I had considered going into Italy but it looked like charging infrastructure was a bit sparse. As well, on my European trip, EV renting was a bit inflexible, and my company required drop off at the same place as I rented the vehicle.   BRENT KINGSFORD About six months after I bought my Chevy Bolt, I decided it was time to prove to myself that a quick 1200+ mile road trip from my house in Washington State to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City , Utah was possible.  With a little help from Plug Share I mapped my route there and back. Despite a few charger issues, we made it there. After moving my son’s residence, we turned right back around and headed home.  There were a few times I was worried about making it to the next ccs dc fast charger, but we did it.    JAMES DUBBEN 4 Months in to owning our Tesla M3 Dual Motor LR we set off across the USA. Florida to Washington 2,508 miles in 3 days. 20 supercharger stops. Healthiest trip ever across the US. Week with friends and family then 2 more weeks wandering across the west US seeing 10 National parks/monuments. 7,200 miles overall.   MARK WESTON I took my then 3 week old Hyundai kona electric car last May from where I live just outside Waltham Abbey Essex to East Kilbride Scotland 398 miles each way.  Being a novice I made some mistakes but realised that the public Charging  I.e Highway Electric need to improve available charging stations and more of them.   MATTHEW BOOTH I myself have driven 480Km each way from Northern Switzerland to Italy for our holiday, in my Jaguar iPace. It's actually no different from driving a vehicle with ICE, other than it's quieter and more relaxing. There are so many charging stations in Europe now it's not challenging at all.   Bill Miller When we got our new 2018 BMW i3 in March, I convinced my reluctant wife that a long road trip in our new car would be “fun”!  We traveled a sizable chunk of the SE USA taking our journey through 6 states all of which were pretty unaware of the existence of EV’s.   At that time the entire state of Alabama had zero public charging stations. However, since about all car dealers had at least one EV on their list of available vehicles, they had installed a charging station. So our BMW was welcomed at all different brands of dealers. In fact a Nissan dealer offered to give us a courtesy ride to & back from a local restaurant for lunch while our car was charging.     MARK WALKER I'm emailing to answer your question of the week. To date our longest EV trip has been from Parry Sound ON to Cornwall, ON, approximately 500 km. No issues for the most part, but we have to take different routes depending on whether we decide to charge and have an outing at a level 2, or just want to get there. We have a EV Road trip planned for the summer, travelling from Parry Sound, ON to Prince Edward Island, a distance of approximately 1800 km. We aren't overly concerned due to some planned stops for overnights, not to mention we have a 2 year old who needs breaks in the car! We're vey much looking forward to it. We drive a Kona Electric, which the canadian model only comes with the 64kwh battery, and the heat pump. As a further intersting tid-bit, a Tesla Model Y was spotted in Sudbury ON yesterday. It was -25 celcisus and it was spotted at the supercharger there with california plates. Presumably doing some cold weather testing.   JOHAN EINEVIK I dream of driving with the family to Spain and back. Its about 3000 km  from my home in Sweden to the center of Spain. Hope I will do it when I get my Model Y.   TOM LAST My first big EV road trip was Anglesey to Samoens in the French alps in my Free Supercharging 2015 Tesla Model S 85D in Feb 2016 when the Supercharger network was so much less developed than it is today.  It was great, a few big gaps (200+ miles between chargers) required a bit of hypermiling but all in all it was a breeze.  In October 2019 we took another trip from Anglesey to Lake Geneva and then home via the Nurburgring in my Model 3 Performance, the difference was massive, Superchargers are so abundant now its really no issue if you can access them, again all the charging was free as I was lucky enough to have 10,000 free miles based on 2 referrals I made back in May 2019.   NICO JANSEN We drove more than 3k km in 3 weeks with our Renault Zoë ZE 40 (your car). We went from Belgium to Sweden for hollyday (see map). Charge stops we're long given the slow charging speed of the old Zoë. Had some trouble with rapid gating battery (1 kW charging instead of 22) on our first day (40°C that day). Finding a charger was also a challenge sometimes in lower populated areas. Saw enough superchargers though.   GUILLAME I've been doing international trips for the last 5 years with my EVs (2 Leaf, 1 i3). Last one was from Ireland through France, Corsica, north of Italy, Monaco, Switzerland, Germany (Frankfurt Motor Show), Luxembourg, Belgium and back to France and Ireland : 4500km in 3 days. No more than 600km per day (applies to my BMW i3 94Ah, probably similar for your Zoé Ze40). Plenty 22kW AC charge points in France so your Zoé will literally feel at home there.   SHARON & MICHAEL MOSS We are currently on our return trip from Fully Charged in Austen where we displayed our 2020 Kia Soul. By the time we get home we will have traveled 6,500 miles from our home on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Other than the extra few hours to charge to a days travel we have found that the EV trip was no different from a gas car, other than the quiet.  At most fast charging stations we were the only vehicle and did not have to wait. We found that when we stopped to charge we spent the time getting a bite to eat, getting a bathroom break, taking a quick walk or checking out local attractions. Your trip sounds like a great adventure, much more fun than flying and better for the environment!   henrik brandt Last fall me and my wife took a road trip from from Copenhagen to Volterra - Italy in our 2015 Tesla Model S70D. A total of 4,511 kilometers with a total of 29 charging stops at Tesla Supercharger locations as shown below.   JEFF ERBES total 2,100 round trip. That was my first long road trip and it went fine, of course Tesla tells you when and where you need to go to charge and how long each charging will take. We took 2 days to do it and we stayed in a hotel that had chargers so in the morning we left with a full charge... that was awesome! When we got there we charged with a 110 outlet which took about 24 hours but no rush we were staying for 5 days anyway.   Steve Birkett | Plug & Play EV I just completed a 4,232-mile round trip from Boston, Massachusetts to Austin, Texas in a Chevy Bolt EV, in order to attend the first Fully Charged Live in the USA. Lots of folks came from far-flung corners of the country in Teslas, of course, but I felt like the few of us who covered major miles in non-Tesla EVs proved an important point: the North American public charging infrastructure is now extensive and reliable enough to get us across the country in a relatively short space of time! I left Wed. 29th Jan, got to Austin on Fri. 31st, spent the weekend enjoying the show and was back on the East coast by the following Tuesday 4th Feb.   MARKUS LAFER I wouldn't be concerned to go from UK to Pisa too much using Newmotion/Shell charging cards taking in consideration the number of chargers on the route. Maybe in Italy it could be a little bit more of a challenge, but not in Western Europe.   STEVE DAVIES My wife and I made a US cross country trip from New Jersey to Arizona this holiday season. This was the most relaxing long drive I've ever done. 5 days each way. 3 or 4 Supercharger stops each day averaging about 25 min per charge. Free destination charging each night at hotels.   JACK In August 2018 my wife and I loaded up our year-old Chevrolet Bolt and drove from our home in eastern Massachusetts to Southern California and back for a family get-together, about 7000 miles total. We folded down the back seats and stuffed the back of the Bolt with our usual luggage plus a tent and camping supplies, brought a portable 32 amp EVSE to charge at state campgrounds overnight, ordered every charging network RFID card, downloaded all of the apps, and planned a route that minimized the gaps between CCS chargers. We drove past Electrify America construction sites all the way across the Great Plains — the same trip would have been very different the following summer!   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Are you happy to pay extra for add-on features or apps for your EV, after you’ve bought it?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 236 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #678   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 26th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new PATREON PRODUCER PRAT KODE   AIWAYS U5 FOR EUROPE Aiways will make history when order books for its U5 all-electric SUV open at this year’s Geneva Motor Show by becoming the first Chinese car brand to sell an electric car in the European market. The big question that Aiways hopes to answer: can China compete with Europe, in Europe, and succeed?" is the question asked by CleanTechnica: "About the size of an Audi Q5, the Aiways U5 seats 5 and offers a 190 HP electric motor. Aiways plans to deliver 2000 units to customers in its first year, ostensibly to focus on delivering both build quality and customer service that are on par with what its European customer expect. Assuming things go well, Aiways can “flip a switch” and deliver 50,000 (fifty-thousand) units to European customers in calendar year 2021. Assuming they can sell 50,000 of the things, that is, but with a price tag expected to be somewhat less than 30,000 Euro, maybe that’s not such a huge ask?"   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/25/aiways-u5-set-to-become-first-chinese-ev-in-europe/   TESLA MODEL S, MODEL X IN FOR VARIETY OF UPDATES, LEAK SUGGESTS "Tesla might be ready to pull the trigger on updates for its two flagship models, the Model S sedan and Model X SUV. According to a well-known Tesla "hacker," who's often dug into Tesla software in the vehicle to find clues about the future, everything from battery updates to a new suspension version is in the cards." says CNET: "The hacker, who goes by "Green" on Twitter posted last Friday to share the things he found buried in Tesla's software, which funny enough, revolves around hardware. Among the mentions, there may be an inductive phone charger, updated lumbar for the seats, a new charging port and some sort of new suspension. The biggest piece of information is the mention of two new Model S and Model X battery types in a handful of configurations. However, mention of the phone charger may be a clue about a long-rumored interior refresh for the Model S and Model X."   https://www.cnet.com/news/tesla-model-3-nhtsa-investigation-unintended-acceleration/   EVOKE’S MODERATELY PRICED ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES EXPAND TO EU AND AUSTRALIA "Evoke Motorcycles, a Beijing-based electric motorcycle manufacturer, has found success in its domestic market with highway-capable electric motorcycles. Now the company is ready to test the international market with operations in Europe and Australia." reports MIcah TOll for Electrek: "According to a statement sent to Electrek by Evoke, the company already has dealers operating in Austria and Hungary. Now the company has brought on Chreter Australia as its Evoke distributor in the land down under. Chreter will offer Evoke’s two current models, the Evoke Urban and Evoke Urban S. It will also provide after-service in Australia for the two electric motorcycles. Both models received updates for the 2020 model year to improve their performance. Evoke’s 2020 Urban electric motorcycles are rated with a maximum speed of 130 km/h (81 mph). The bikes are powered by a 19 kW (25 hp) rear hub motor. The 2020 Urban series has a 8.4kWh battery pack offering a useable capacity of 7.6kWh.They’re designed to be affordable commuter electric motorcycles with prices in the neighborhood of US$7,900."   https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/23/evoke-electric-motorcycles-expand-to-eu-australia/#aprd   ID.3 TO BECOME AVAILABLE FOR ORDER IN APRIL "German electric car rental company Nextmove has revealed further details of the market launch of the VW ID.3 with reference to a document from France. Orders for the First Edition should apparently be possible from April. The series version will also be available from May, initially with 58 kWh and 45 kWh batteries." according to Chris Randall in electrive: "While it is no secret that the First Edition will be available to 40,000 pre-orderers throughout Europe from summer (if they make a binding order from their reservation), now it seems that deliveries of the series versions with 58 kWh and 45 kWh batteries will start in September and October respectively. The launch was announced for 2020 and Volkswagen is taking this seriously, although we might assume that since no mention has been made of the most powerful version with a 77 kWh battery, its market launch is expected to take place after 2020. The installation of a heat pump helps to save energy in winter conditions and thus indirectly gains range. The Volkswagen specification of 60 kilometres range gain refers to an outside temperature of +5 to -10 degrees Celsius. It is not clear how much customers have to pay for the heat pump in the freely configurable series models. Of the three equipment lines the heat pump is only on board with the maximum equipment for the First Edition presented by VW. In the meantime, the First Edition is no longer available to reserve in Germany."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/23/id-3-to-become-available-for-order-in-april/   LONDON BOOSTS SCRAPPAGE SCHEME TO £9,500 TOWARDS ELECTRIC VANS "London has doubled the scrappage scheme grant available to those switching their old van or minibus to a newer Ultra Low Emission Zone compliant model. The changes mean there is now £7,000 available for eligible models - jumping to £9,500 for those switching to an electric model." says Next Green Car: "Criteria have been changed to make it easier to access the funding too. The old system saw £3,500 available to either buy a Euro 6 vehicle or access third party offers such as vehicle hire or sharing services. Those switching to EVs got up to £6,000, and any access to scrappage scheme funding required drivers to have made at least 52 trips into the Congestion Charge Zone in the six months prior to the scheme’s introduction. The requirement is now only 26 trips completed. Equally, firms with fewer than 10 employees could access funding, whereas the limit is now up to 50 employees. Grants are on top of the existing Plug-in Van Grants, which apply to all eligible electric vans and takes up to 20% off the value of the vehicle - up to a maximum of £8,000."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8838/london-boosts-scrappage-scheme-to-9500-towards-electric-vans/   TESLA CYBERTRUCK SPIED FILMING SEGMENT FOR JAY LENO’S GARAGE WITH ELON MUSK "Tesla CEO Elon Musk and the futuristic Cybertruck were caught filming near SpaceX headquarters late Friday afternoon for an upcoming segment of Jay Leno’s Garage. Once again taking the spotlight at the Tesla Design Center in Hawthorne, CA, the site where the all-electric utility truck made its shocking world debut, camera and production crew were setting up to film a scene near the famed Tesla Supercharger monolith." says Teslarati: "Elon Musk can be seen inspecting the rear of the Cybertruck and its motorized rear tonneau, as film crew busily prepared equipment for the camera truck that would follow the stainless steel pickup past SpaceX.   Cameras rolled as the Tesla Cybertruck made its way onto Crenshaw Blvd. in Hawthorne, CA, with the iconic Falcon 9 booster and SpaceX headquarters framed perfectly in the background. A black truck with a camera rig flanked the electric pickup truck.m While Teslarati did not spot the Model Y  in Friday’s filming of the Cybertruck, rumors surfaced last week that Tesla’s much-awaited electric crossover Model Y will also be featured on Jay Leno’s long-running car show. This information was reportedly shared to a certain Tesla Model 3 owner Michael Hughes by a Tesla employee who gave him an early tour of the Model Y interior."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-cybertruck-spy-shot-jay-lenos-garage-design-center/   MINI ELECTRIC IN ALPS: FROM MUNICH TO SÖLDEN WITHOUT RECHARGE "The new all-electric MINI Cooper SE is the ideal companion for short city getaways. On a single battery recharge, you can leave Munich to visit the beautiful Alpine winter resort of Sölden, which is precisely 200 kilometers away, in Austria." according to BMW Blog: "Depending on road and weather conditions, the new MINI Cooper SE will boast a pure electric somewhere between 235 kilometers and 270 kilometers, so the 200-kilometer trip from the Bavarian capital city up to Austrian ski resort of Sölden shouldn’t be a problem to cover without recharging the battery. When the MINI Cooper SE finally reached its destination, it still had an adequate level of energy content in the high-voltage Li-Ion battery. Furthermore, the climate control system of the MINI Electric is designed to use the residual heat dissipated by the electric motor, the drive control systems and the battery as to heat up the interior during winter. The combined electricity consumption is calculated between 14.8 and 16.8 kWh per 100 kilometers."   https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/01/23/with-the-mini-electric-in-alps-from-munich-to-solden-without-recharge/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   DRK The vandalism, bullying and outright hostility towards objects from strangers is not so much about the cars ( it only appears so on the surface) but is in reality a disturbing look at the mental health or lack thereof of our population at large. Otherwise "normal" people suddenly keying cars ( which still happens to cars no matter which brand with or without alarms etc)  and other signs of frustration and anger is a look at the tenuous hold average people have in our society for the stresses of life, health, economic and mental pressures of modern day living. You can see this in any online forum or comment section and our "leaders" are increasingly looking less balanced as well. (I live in the USA so lots to look at) and it is not party based. People are unfortunately not doing as well as the thin veneer of "modern civilization" would lead one to believe.   FROM ROOSTER #EV #Tesla envy same reason as for all other forms of envy, lack of brain cells !   DONALD RS The reason I think that people have a problem with EVs or that I think only the rich can afford the EVs this is a way they can put a thumb or finger up at a e v a rich person and are things I think there are again EVsis because of the fact that they feel threatened are there fossil burning car is being lost   FUTURE SYSTEM Sadly, I think ALL nice cars are potentially subject to vandalism, and break in’s etc. That’s nothing new. A friend of mine had a very nice European sports car in the ‘70’s, and it was vandalised twice, (keys down the side!), and broken in to once. He got to the stage where he wouldn’t even park it in most public places. It’s nothing to do with being an EV or a Tesla, but only Tesla’s are smart enough to record the perpetrators on video.   STEPHEN TROYER People have a problem with EVs because change is scary, making a change of lifestyle is inconvenient, and many times they feel personally attacked when someone says an EV is better in every way (performance, comfort, safety, cost of ownership).   Beyond that, I think there is a type of person who will target any nice-looking car, and it's just that more of them get caught when they vandalize a brand new EV because of all the cameras and tech.     Romain Hedouin  • 4 days ago I don't know if people vandalize Teslas because they're EV I think people vandalize any car, it's just that Teslas are pretty much the only ones able to record in ~360 degree view Also they're seen as luxurious so jealous haters obviously vandalize them more... sad world   I believe people still think their tax money is paying the tax credit for rich people's EVs. They don't know the tax credit is the owner's own tax money coming back to them. If they only owe $5000 on their taxes that year they only get $5000, not the full $7500. So they lash out and vandalize EVs and charging stations to feel better about paying for other people's cars. Which we know is incorrect so they have no reason. Josh Pritt Space Coast EV Drivers Florida   AJ TARQUINO I believe that the people that vandalize (Key) EV’s and park their trucks in charging spots is strictly out of their jealousy of the fact we pay less in operating cost and maintenance, which, if they could afford one, they would buy one.  Why else you do what they do ??  I, for one am glad that someday the air we breathe will be cleaner and we will be less dependent on foreign gasoline.  Gasoline fluctuates every week where I live up and down @ $.60, which I feel is crazy.  I play their game and buy when it’s down and wait as long as possible till it comes back down.  I also shop around for the best price.  I also own a Nissan Leaf that helps, too !!   BRIAN C While there are possibly many reasons, I believe most of them are absolute die-hard ICE vehicle drivers. They would rather DIE than to buy, own or drive an EV. Most are surely climate deniers. They feel threatened. Some can see the growing market for EVs and they feel a threat that their freedom to choose to drive an ICE vehicle is going to be taken away from them.   BILL POLLOCK CHARGECAR.CA Do people hate EVs?  I'm not fully convinced of that.  Are they afraid of change...of new things...of things they don't completely understand...of things that will change the way they move through life? I'll bet there is a big Venn diagram overlap between the people who ICE chargers, or resent Electrics, and Brexit supporters and MAGA heads.  I know it is a big assumption on my part, but I am willing to stand by it. I think we all agree that they are mostly small c conservatives (small p conservatives?).  I can't imaging a liberal going out of their way to be overtly resentful of any choice of car.        NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   If I could one something extra in 2020 with EV News Daily, what would it be? Show #591   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 25th September 2019. NEW PORSCHE TAYCAN REVIEW "The Taycan not only spearheads Porsche’s electric vehicle strategy - the Taycan Cross Turismo will follow in 2020, before which the next Macan will go fully electric - but will also provide the platform for Audi Sport’s electric vehicle livelihood when the e-Tron GT debuts later this year." says Stuart Gallagher for evo.co.uk: "Porsche calls it a Performance Battery Plus with 93.4kWh, which doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as a Mezger flat-six. But this powerpack is connected to an electric motors on the front and rear axles, the former driven by a single speed transmission, the latter by an innovative two-speed unit."   And here's something which I didn't read about in all the pre-press: "Simply wait for the batteries to reach operating temperature of around 50C (achieved after around 15-20 mins of regular driving), put your left foot on the brake, right foot on the throttle wait for launch control to engage and go for it. Up to ten consecutive times."   They note all the usual other things like the 800 volt battery, 0-60 in 2.6, 0-100 in 6.3, the quarter mile in 10.8. 270kW charging, carbon ceramic brakes, rear axle steering.   The final quote from evo sums up electric cars in general: "The way in which it delivers its power and torque is borderline undetectable, speed building with no real effort or input required from the driver."   Oh, and they couldn't resist ending the article with the three words: "your move, Tesla".   https://www.evo.co.uk/porsche/porsche-taycan/201782/new-porsche-taycan-review-stuttgart-puts-its-stamp-on-the-electric   VOLVO XC40 ELECTRIC VERSION TEASED AHEAD OF OCTOBER REVEAL "[Volvo] have chosen the XC40 to become Volvo’s very first production EV. Announced in April and teased here ahead of its October full reveal" says motor1.com: "The Geely-owned marque says it will release more details about the pure electric crossover in the coming weeks, prior to a first public showing programmed for October 16. The XC40 sans a traditional engine will follow the recently launched plug-in hybrid model equipped with the T5 Twin Engine powertrain offering a combined 258 hp and 28.6 miles (46 kilometers) of electric range."   https://www.motor1.com/news/372720/volvo-xc40-electric-teaser/   BMW X1 GETS PHEV VARIANT IN EUROPE, UP TO 35 MILES OF ELECTRIC RANGE "After introducing a plug-in hybrid version of its entry-level crossover for the Chinese market, BMW is now launching the model in Europe. The X1 xDrive25e is making its debut on the Old Continent, offering “a high level of driving pleasure and thrilling agility.” in our second MOtor1 article today: "Under the familiar skin of the X1 is a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which uses a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine supported by an electric motor, specifically developed for this particular model. The gas unit generates 125 horsepower (92 kilowatts) and 162 pound-feet (220 Newton-meters) of torque, and is mated to a six-speed transmission channeling the power to the front wheels. What’s more important for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, on a single charge of the 9.7-kWh battery pack, the X1 xDrive 25e can travel up to 35 miles (57 kilometers)"   https://www.motor1.com/news/372729/bmw-x1-xdrive25e-phev-unveiled/   NOW HIRING: TESLA SEEKS TALENT AHEAD OF CHINA MASS PRODUCTION "Tesla is on a hiring spree in China for first-line technicians, software engineers and marketing experts, as the electric carmaker gears toward mass production at its Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai by the year's end." reports Nikkei.com: "The company began its Shanghai hiring through its official WeChat account on Sept. 1 and updated its latest job listing Tuesday. The job post suggests the company is assembling a factory firmware team which will be department to develop programmable hardware that controls the production line."   And then we got an ElonTweet: "Tesla is building a major engineering team in China, incl heavy focus on software/firmware for factory & car. This includes original engineering of new factory processes & cars, Great engineers will only join if original engineering is supported, not just localization"   https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Technology/Now-hiring-Tesla-seeks-talent-ahead-of-China-mass-production   Nikkei continues: "The jobs listed on WeChat include first-line technicians, quality controllers, assembly experts and safety guards, among other factory operation roles. The company plans to interview candidates at an upcoming job fair on Thursday, signaling that mass production in Shanghai will begin soon."   https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Technology/Now-hiring-Tesla-seeks-talent-ahead-of-China-mass-production   TESLA STARTS MONITORING DATA USE AHEAD OF STARTING TO CHARGE FOR CONNECTIVITY "Tesla is starting to monitor data usage in its vehicles, which has always been free, but the automaker is now planning to start to charge for connectivity." writes electrek today: "some owners are reporting that Tesla is starting to add a data usage counter in their vehicle (hat tip to Andrew)" who posted a pic which said 0 of 50GB used.   https://electrek.co/2019/09/24/tesla-monitoring-data-charge-connectivity/   HYUNDAI MOTORSPORT BEGINS TESTING WITH ALL-ELECTRIC VELOSTER N ETCR Hyundai Motorsport have completed the first on-track running with the new Veloster N ETCR, the company’s first electric race car project.   The brand new car completed two days at the Hungaroring near Budapest last weekend, completing the test trouble-free. The days at the circuit – already an established part of the FIA WTCR and TCR Europe calendars – allowed the engineers to learn more about the chassis balance on the technical circuit, and to begin to harness the power from the mid-mounted electric motor to maximize performance and efficiency.   Using the expertise in Touring Car racing shown in both the championship winning i30 N TCR and Veloster N TCR, the aim is to produce a similarly strong all-round package for when the ETCR category begins racing next year.   MOTORCYCLE ‘SPEED FREAK’ ZEF EISENBERG SMASHES ELECTRIC WORLD SPEED RECORD "MADMAX Team Rider Zef Eisenberg raced in to the record books at the weekend (21-22 September 2019) setting four new motorcycle records at the Straightliners ACU/FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) World Speed Records event at Elvington, North Yorkshire on board the Nottingham University Isle of Man TT zero bike." says electric cars report: "International multiple ACU Motorbike speed record holder and self-proclaimed ‘Speed Freak’ Zef Eisenberg achieved four FIM World records for an electric motorbike (unfaired), with an ‘average kilometre’ speed of 185mph, and peak GPS speeds of 197mph. He victoriously secured the title for the fastest electric motorbike bike in the world (naked – no fairing)."   https://electriccarsreport.com/2019/09/motorcycle-speed-freak-zef-eisenberg-smashes-electric-world-speed-record/   EXXONMOBIL CEO DISMISSES ELECTRIC VEHICLES: ‘WHAT’S THE POINT?’ "Exxon CEO Darren Woods recently expressed his doubts about the transportation sector’s transition to electric vehicles. In comments during the 2019 Oil and Gas Climate Initiative meet, the CEO extended a rather blunt dismissal of EVs, suggesting that the zero-emissions vehicles will serve little purpose if they remained charged by a coal-powered grid." reports Teslarati: "“What’s the point of having electric vehicles that will end up being charged by power generated from coal,” Woods said. In the United States alone, data from the US Energy Information Administration reveal that less than a third of the electricity generated in the country was powered by coal in 2018. This number will likely decrease in the near future as well, with clean energy initiatives such as residential solar and battery systems becoming more popular. "   https://www.teslarati.com/exxonmobil-ceo-dismisses-evs-no-point/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   What do you want to hear on this podcast? Only pure EVs?  Show #570   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 4th September 2019. PORSCHE TAYCAN REVEALED   In the words of company boss Oliver Blume the Porsche Taycan is the start of a new era.   2 motors – front and rear axle 93.4kWh battery 270 kW peak charge rate 265 kW regenerative braking capacity   761 horsepower  2-speed transmission All-wheel drive Top speed: 161mph 0-62mph: 2.8 seconds Range: Up to 257 miles    Time to charger up to 80% capacity: 22.5 minutes Boot space: 447 litres (front 81 litres, rear 366 litres) up to 450 km (280 miles) (WLTP)       "The Porsche Taycan is finally here, and the Turbo trim, which is the base model at launch, starts at $150,900 in the United States. Going for the more powerful Turbo S takes the price to $185,000. The online configurator for the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S are already available, and fully loading a Turbo S takes the price to $241,500." according to Motor1.   Let's kick off with the Porsche presentation, 40 mins long but don't worry, this is everything you need to know without all the corportate publicity guff or frankly, the truly awful sound glitches and long periods of silences that showed up on the Youtube stream.   [megacut]   Let's start with an intro from Clint Simone at Motor1.com: [clip]   The Verge says: "consider these important specs: the top-end version, the Taycan Turbo S, will have a 93kWh battery pack that gets a WLTP-estimated 450 km (~280 miles) of range. That’s about 40 miles more than the base Tesla Model S. The Taycan’s regenerative braking will feed energy back into the battery at rates of up to 265kW, which is very impressive. Of course, there was no mention of Dieselgate during the 40-plus-minute presentation. Porsche first unveiled the prototype Taycan, then called the Mission E, back in 2015, just a few days before the scandal broke. Since then, Volkswagen, Porsche’s parent company, has made a hard shift into electric vehicles, and the Taycan is the first major push into that new market."   A very cool use of a spoiler which I hadn't read anything about in all the preview pieces: [top gear]   Talking of stopping, Motor1 has this to say about brakes: "The Taycan's brakes are unlike any ever fitted to a Porsche. They could – and this isn't a joke or an exaggeration – last for 20 to 30 years. That's because the transmission, rather than the physical brakes, handle 90 percent of braking events. The front transmission can apply up to 221 lb-ft (300 Nm) of recuperative torque, while the rear gearbox packs 406 lb-ft (550 Nm). Considering this, we’d argue the physical brakes, featuring dust-reducing tungsten-carbide surface coating, are a bit overkill. Up front, there are 10-piston monoblock calipers clamping down on 16.3-in (415-mm) rotors"   Autogefuhl had a look at the app: [clip]   And what about the platform which could be used for other VW group cars such as the Audi e-tron GT: "The Taycan arrives on a brand new fully-electric platform known as J1, and will be built in new facilities at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen home in Stuttgart. The battery uses lithium-ion pouch cells, arranged to allow a small well in the floor of the car for rear passenger foot room. The Taycan shares some of its suspension components with the Panamera, and also features four-wheel steering as standard. At low speeds, the rear axle will turn in the opposite direction to the front to promote low speed agility, while at pace they’ll turn together to aid stability.  Three-chamber air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management is also included, enabling a softer setup for cruising, a harder setup for performance and track driving, and a lift function for additional ride height. "   Edmunds has this to say about the two speed gearbox: [clip]   As for the technicals, Autocar say: "Although the Taycan’s 90kWh battery pushes the car’s weight above 2.2 tonnes, the Taycan has the lowest centre of gravity of any Porsche on sale today – and close to the 918 Spyder’s – and weight distribution is a near ideal 49:51. Throttle response is five times quicker than on a combustion engined car, for instance, traction control 10 times faster and torque vectoring front to rear five times faster, while an electronic limited slip differential can respond to wheelslip 50 times faster than a mechanical set-up. Porsche Stability Management can be used, sit in a Sport mode that offers limited intervention or, crucially for enthusiasts, be switched off entirely. "   In their conclusion, Autogeful noted Porsche's size and choice of interiors: [clip]   Some extras not about the car but about ownership, from Motor1.com: "During the first three years of ownership, the first 30 minutes at Electrify America stations is free for Taycan drivers via the Porsche Charging Service. But while that gives you a place to charge, the Porsche Charging Planner is the real star. Working alongside the navigation system, the Charging Planner does a few key things. First, it looks at the route and plots the shortest, fastest path (we'd classify that as the minimum responsibility of a navigation system, after all) and then continuously monitors conditions along the way. If, though, the Charging Planner realizes the Taycan's battery is going to be a bit low – 13 percent or less – upon arrival, it factors in charge stops, reorienting the route based on where the battery will get the fastest recharge rate. A 50-kW DC charger might be right off the freeway exit, but if there's a 270-kW charger 10 minutes out of the way that will cut the charge time in half, Charge Planner takes that into account when plotting the journey. Once that's settled, the system will also precondition the battery to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, a temperature that allows the fastest of fast charges. With a route engaged, a journey timeline shows when and where to stop, and even how long to charge for."   Now we've talked about the Taycan, let's look at the competition with Bloomberg: "Despite all its engineering muscle as the world’s largest automaker, VW has struggled to slow Tesla’s march. The debut of the e-Tron, a challenger to the Model X sport-utility vehicle, was marred by delays and a recall. Tesla chief Elon Musk has meanwhile stretched downmarket with the lower-priced Model 3, which started selling in Europe this year and is about to begin production in China. The technologically refined car will go head-to-head with Tesla’s aging Model S, after Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar and Audi opted for SUVs to kickstart their electric-car offerings. Tesla is facing concerns over whether it can deliver sustainable profits amid waning demand for its older models while sales rise for the cheaper Model 3."   https://www.motor1.com/news/368730/2020-porsche-taycan-debut-official/   https://www.motor1.com/features/368891/2020-porsche-taycan-configurator/   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/porsche/taycan/92807/new-all-electric-2020-porsche-taycan-bolts-in-with-up-to-750bhp   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motor-shows/new-porsche-taycan-arrives-pivotal-electric-sports-car   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-09-04/porsche-unwraps-debut-e-car-in-backdrop-of-water-wind-and-fire?srnd=hyperdrive     QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week.   What’s your favourite EV experience, or experience you’d like to have?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 245 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.     TESLA MODEL 3 U.S. DELIVERIES DIP AS IT SHIPS TO GLOBAL MARKETS First week of February and InsideEVs are estimating the January Tesla Model 3 sales numbers: "The expected result of shifting to overseas is seen in our estimates, but that doesn’t imply that demand for the Model 3 has fallen. In fact, demand abroad is high and is being fulfilled now, so on the U.S. side, a slip was inevitable. Our estimates show that Tesla delivered some 6,500 Mo del 3 to U.S. buyers in January 2019. Yes, that’s down considerably compared to the later months of 2018, but it’s actually way up from the 1,875 sold in the U.S. in January 2018."   As for the LEAF: "How will the announcement of the upcoming 2019 Nissan LEAF Plus (e+) impact Nissan LEAF U.S. deliveries? (LEAF sales are bleak at 717 for January, but this still parallels January 2016 and 2017 figures. It’s not really fair to compare LEAF sales from January 2018.)"   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-sales-u-s-january-2019/   https://insideevs.com/january-2019-u-s-plug-in-ev-sales-report-card/   TOYOTA'S HUGE SALES DIP MARKS A ROUGH START TO 2019 "Toyota is already down 7.1% on North American automobile sales this year, as compared to January 2018, and Lexus isn’t far behind with a 2.8% decrease in volume." reports Jalopnik: "Most of the losses are lead by aging models like the Prius."   https://jalopnik.com/toyotas-huge-sales-dip-marks-a-rough-start-to-2019-1832303081   TESLA’S CCS ADAPTER ENABLES MODEL S AND X TO CHARGE UP 120 KW, WILL NOT BE STANDARD Some confusion around a story over the weekend about Tesla CCS connectors. "Starting this month, Tesla is including a new CCS adapter with all new Model S and Model X orders in Europe so that owners can take advantage of the growing CCS fast-charging networks on the old continent, according to an update on their website." reported Electrek. And then updated their story: "Tesla responded to this story saying that the update on their website was inaccurate. It will not be standard and it’s unclear when it will be available as an accessory." "Tesla has updated its charging connector support page in Europe to show that the new CCS adapter is standard on “all custom order Model S and Model X vehicles from February 1.” Update: Tesla now says that it was a mistake on their part and it will not be standard."   https://electrek.co/2019/02/02/tesla-ccs-adapter-standard-model-s-x-europe/   MERCEDES-BENZ EQV ELECTRIC MINIVAN TO DEBUT IN GENEVA "Mercedes-Benz will unveil an electric MPV concept at this year’s Geneva motor show, previewing a rival machine to the forthcoming Volkswagen ID Buzz." reports Autocar: "Confirmed at the launch of the facelifted V-Class MPV, the Concept EQV is described as a ‘near-series study’ that will likely closely mirror the production version. It's the fifth confirmed vehicle in the German firm’s electric EQ range, following the EQC SUV that launched last year and the forthcoming EQA hatchback, EQB small SUV and EQS luxury saloon. Those models, along with the EQV, are all due to go on sale by 2022. Mercedes-Benz Vans board member Wilfried Porth described the EQV as the firm’s “next big statement” in the class. Mercedes-Benz Vans already offers the electric eVito and will launch the eSprinter later this year. The eVito is based on the architecture of the regular van and is intended as a ‘last-mile’ delivery vehicle suited to urban use. It's powered by three lithium ion batteries with a total capacity of 41.4kWh, connected to a 113bhp, 221lb ft motor, providing a range of around 93 miles."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mercedes-benz-eqv-electric-people-carrier-due-geneva   31 COMPANIES JOIN DRIVE TO SWITCH TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES "More than 30 global corporates have now pledged to switch their road fleets to electric vehicles through the EV100 initiative, which has set a target of electrifying two million vehicles by 2030 through its membership." according to Michael Holder for Business Green: "Published today, The Climate Group's first annual report on its EV100 initiative reveals 31 companies with a combined revenue of over $500bn have now made EV commitments as part of the campaign, including high profile names such as BT, IKEA, Unilever, EDF, and Heathrow Airport. The report provides a detailed update on the commitments made by 23 member companies, which have together pledged to switch 145,000 vehicles to electric in 66 markets around the world by 2030. Collectively, the EV commitments from these 23 firms could help to save an estimated 6.6 million metric tonnes of CO2, the equivalent carbon footprint of 1.9 million UK households, according to the report."   https://www.businessgreen.com/bg/news/3070355/ev100-31-companies-join-drive-to-switch-to-electric-vehicles   ELECTRIC VW FOR LESS THAN $22,900 COMING BY 2023-2024 "Michael Jost, Head of Strategy at Volkswagen, said officially that in 2023, or at the latest in 2024, the company will introduce a truly affordable electric car, which will start from less than €20,000 ($22,900). It will be a small car, the size of a T-Roc, which could be described as a compact crossover utility vehicle." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "“MEB and ID. Family are part of the Volkswagen Group’s electric offensive, for which the company is investing around €30 billion by 2023. By 2025, the Group brands plan to increase the number of their all-electric cars from six today to more than 50. Jost, who is also the head of Group Product Strategy, emphasizes that electric vehicles are by no means synonymous with sacrifice: “We build cool electric cars that are fun to drive, beautifully designed and fully networked.” He notes that starting in 2023, or at the latest in 2024, Volkswagen will launch an electric model, which will be the size of a T-Roc, for less than €20,000.”   https://insideevs.com/electric-vw-cheap-coming-2023/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 23rd July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   MICROLINO EV LOOKS POISED TO HIT EUROPEAN ROADS SOON "You may soon see these little electric runabouts flitting around European cities. The flat-out-adorable Microlino is a modern riff on BMW's Isetta, the three-wheeled, front-door bubble car from the 1950s" writes Chris Paukert at cnet.com: "Micro Mobility Systems AG, the Swiss electric scooter company behind the project, has announced that the under-8-foot-long Microlino has just passed the final tests for EU homologation. That's right, it's now road-legal in Europe. The version powered by the 8kWh battery achieved 78 miles in testing, while the 14.4kWh version managed over 125 miles. Those may not seem like particularly impressive range figures, but they should be plenty for this strictly city-minded vehicle."   RENAULT ZOE CLIMBS TO #1 IN GERMANY "The German plug-in electric car (PEV) market grew 23% in June, to 5,709 registrations, with plug-in hybrids (+25%) and fully electric cars (+21%) growing at a similar pace. In 2018, all-electrics are reaching 1% share, while plug-in hybrids have also grown their share to 1%, resulting in a total PEV share of 2%." reported Jose Pontes for Clean Technica: "But the most interesting story on the fuels mix is the Titanic-like drop of diesel vehicles sales. In June, their sales sank 16%. The most popular EV this year so far is the Renault Zoe"   IN JUNE, OVER 78,000 PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CARS WERE SOLD IN CHINA But from Germany, to China, let's supercharge those numbers. "In total, some 78,260 New Energy Cars were sold at 3.1% market share. It’s the world’s largest plug-in car market with nearly 373,000 cars sold during the first six months." according to Mark Kane at InsideEVs   TESLA POLICE CARS START TO PATROL IN LUXEMBOURG com has news of yet another police force going electric: "Police in Luxembourg have added two Tesla electric cars to their fleet, hoping that their speedy acceleration will help them nab more criminals while also trimming the tiny country's carbon emissions"   TESLA MIGHT SOON HAVE A 'NEAR-MONOPOLISTIC' HOLD ON THE EV MARKET Raul Hernandez notes that: "According to a team of Berenberg analysts led by Alexander Haissl, Tesla's competitors have opted for a "low-risk, low-investment" strategy when it comes to electric vehicle manufacturing. That will leave Tesla in the driver's seat with its all-in approach." The analysts write: "With no clear pathway to high-volume EV [electric vehicle] production for these OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] before the mid-2020s Tesla will be given a near-monopolistic opportunity to gain market share and outcompete the incumbent automotive industry." They continue to say: "Tesla/Panasonic continue to exhibit a clear advantage on cell and pack technology compared to all peers, on chemistry, cooling and cost," write Berenberg analysts. "Tesla's small and actively tube-cooled cells, which are not currently replicated and are unlikely to be so by competitors, drives significantly better residual values and cost-of-ownership advantages." "Tesla will invest roughly $32.7 billion into electric vehicle projects over the next five years, which is 40% more than Daimler and Volkswagen combined, according to Berenberg estimates.   MODEL 3 ARRRIVES AT CLEAN TECHNICA Kyle Field at Clean Technica has a Model 3!: "One of our early reservations turned into a car this week as we took delivery of the CleanTechnica Tesla Model 3 at the Tesla Santa Barbara showroom. It’s a Long Range Black Model 3 with the Premium Upgrade Package!" He says: "Let’s talk looks. Yes, I know not everyone likes the looks of the car – especially the dash – but I absolutely love it. It feels so high end and sleek on the inside that it just makes me smile every time I get in. It’s simple enough to not feel cluttered but still manages to do everything I need it to do."   MODEL 3 TRACK MODE "YouTuber Marques Brownlee recently had an opportunity to drive the Model 3 Performance on a track, and he pointed out an experimental "Track Mode" that takes the gloves off" spotted Jon Fingas at Engadget: "The in-testing feature switches on "stability control and powertrain settings configured for track driving," and it's no secret what that means: you can drift, understeer and otherwise push the electric car past its usual limits. It's not certain when this will reach customers, or even what the final name will be. And as enthusiasts will tell you, it's not a novel concept -- many sports cars have the option to turn off handholding features. It's still relatively rare among street-going electric vehicles, though, and serves as another signal that Tesla is interested in EV performance beyond straight-line acceleration."   COMMUNITY NIO EP9   You can listen to all previous 188 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.
