Show #867 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 14th August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. VOLKSWAGEN TO MAKE ELECTRIC CAR CELLS, BATTERY PACKS IN U.S. "Volkswagen said it was expanding its Chattanooga factory in Tennessee to make electric vehicle cells and battery packs in the United States, alongside assembling electric vehicles. The company said it plans to break ground for a laboratory in Chattanooga to develop and test cells and battery packs for its upcoming car models assembled in the U.S., with the goal of a fully operational lab by spring 2021." reports Autoblog: "Volkswagen’s plan to produce its own cells and battery packs for electric vehicles in the United States follows an emissions scandal at the company, which admitted to using illegal software to cheat pollution tests in the country. Insourcing electric vehicle cells and battery packs reinforces Volkswagen as one of the most ambitious traditional carmakers in the electric vehicle domain, Credit Suisse analyst Dan Levy said." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/08/13/volkswagen-plans-chattanooga-battery-production/ ID.3 IS A 4-SEATER "VW does not yet seem to have the new electric car technology under control: Those who want the ID.3 with the large battery have to be content with only four seats. that's what it says on the website of a portal that offers the ID.3 in cooperation with a VW dealership: The two currently available Pro S and Tour variants have "unfortunately only 4 seats", it says there. On the other hand, no information can be found on the order pages of VW itself, neither under the technical data nor with the standard equipment of the ID.3" says teslamag.de: "A Volkswagen spokesperson contacted us after this report was published. He confirmed that only four people are allowed to drive in the ID.3 and cited the total weight and the classification in the homologation as reasons. He also referred to the variants with smaller batteries that have five seats. VW is assuming that the ID.3 with the medium-sized battery (58 kilowatt hours, a little more than the smallest Tesla model) will be the volume model." What about similar sided cars on that platform. ID.4, Skoda enyaq, Seat Cupra el-born. https://teslamag.de/news/nur-4-sitzplaetze-schwaeche-elektroauto-vw-id3-alle-konzern-ableger-29523 ID.3 FIRST EDITION ORDERING WINDOW EXTENDED via ludego.com: "Prebooker phase has been extended. bPrebookers can order a First Edition as a first mover until October 4th and receive the first 3 leasing installments or complete winter bikes free of charge. Only the transfer fees are the same for all customers. All First Editions customers with an additional agreement receive: - Performance upgrade (approx. 2 seconds faster from 0 to 100 km / h) - Pro Performance 58 kWh - One year of free charging up to 2,000 kWh or € 600 with We Charge - Design scope of the 1 ST Edition - Charging with 100 kW DC & 11 kW AC" PORSCHE & CUSTOMCELLS CONSIDER BATTERY FACTORY IN GERMANY "Porsche and the Fraunhofer spin-off Customcells apparently want to build a battery cell factory in Tübingen. The endeavour is still missing EU approval that would enable state funding. cell manufacturer Customcells is to develop battery cells with Porsche for the next generation of the VW subsidiary’s electric sports cars. The two partners have already founded the joint venture called Cellforce Group for this purpose, and production will be located in Tübingen, south of Stuttgart." says electrive: "The project still has to gain approval from the EU whereby the project would be classified as an IPCEI project (Important Project of Common European Interest), which would enable state funding. So far, the IPCEI project has funded the planned battery cell production of the PSA subsidiary Opel in Kaiserslautern and the battery cell production of BMW in Parsdorf near Munich, which was announced a few weeks ago. In total, the German government intends to invest around three billion euros in various battery cell projects." https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/12/porsche-customcells-consider-battery-factory-in-germany/ FORD MUSTANG MACH-E RANGE FIGURES RUMORED TO INCREASE FOLLOWING EPA TESTING "It's believed that Ford will increase the Mach-E range ratings following official EPA testing that's apparently being conducted now. Though the EPA still doesn't have official figures listed for the range of any of the versions of the Mach-E, rumor has it that the initial figures released by Ford will be revised upwards." says InsideEVs. Each distance also represents a record in terms of 64 kWh battery capacity. The nearly 35-hour test took place at Lausitzring, a racetrack in northeast Germany. Dekra, a European vehicle inspection company that has operated at Lausitzring since 2017, monitored the test process and vehicles, recording 36 driver changes. . Each vehicle’s air conditioning and entertainment systems remained off, with available power used solely for propulsion. Only the daytime running lights remained on to comply with the legal requirements for road traffic. The drive teams – one from the renowned German trade magazine Auto Bild and two from Hyundai Motor Deutschland – recorded an average speed between 29 and 31 km/h to reflect typical inner-city traffic speeds in Europe. On the third day, the vehicles managed to cover over 20 km with only 3 percent residual capacity. At zero percent charge, the vehicles continued to drive for several hundred meters before running out of power and coming to a stop. WACKER NEUSON PRESENTS ELECTRIC MINI EXCAVATOR EZ17E "Wacker Neuson, a German firm based in Munich, is expanding its zero-emission range to include the EZ17e electric mini excavator. The manufacturer now offers 12 electric construction machines in this product series."The EZ17e is designed to operate for a whole working day without intermediate charging. If stationary activities permit, it can also be operated by cable and charged while working on power sources ranging from 100 to 415 volts. The operator can monitor how much he loads the site’s power supply system via a display and disconnect the excavator from the grid if necessary. Charging at 415 volts should take around four hours, according to the manufacturer. The battery also has its own heater to allow operation at low temperatures. Despite the power storage, the excavator is very compact and was designed as a zero-tail – i.e. without rear overhang." https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/13/wacker-neuson-presents-electric-mini-excavator-ez17e/ You can listen to all 866 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Show #847 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 22nd July 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. VW ID.3 AVAILABLE TO ORDER FOR PRE-BOOKERS "Volkswagen has opened the order books for its ID.3, allowing those who placed a deposit to specify and confirm their car. The ID.3 1st Edition costs £38,880 (exc. PiCG) and features a 58 kWh (net) battery for a range of 260 miles on a charge. Ultra-rapid charging can be completed at up to 100 kW, allowing drivers to add around 180 miles of range in half an hour." says NExt Green Car: "Powered by a 150 kW electric motor, the ID.3 completes the 0-62mph sprint in 7.3 seconds, and matches a Golf GTI's 0-37mph time." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8953/vw-id3-available-to-order-for-prebookers/ Whats the take from Top Gear? They say: "Cheaper models with less range, performance and kit will follow, but if you want to be among the first to get your mitts on VW’s purpose-built EV, you’ll need to part with £38,880. That’s sounds like a lot, but remember the UK Government will give you £3,000 off (because electricity), so you’ll actually only pay £35,880. Still a lot – that makes the ID.3 1st Edition around £5,000 more than a top-spec Mini Electric or Honda E, but just under £5,000 cheaper than an entry-level Tesla Model 3. The 1st Edition gets a 58kWh battery good for 260 miles of range. The Model 3 Standard Range Plus can do 254 miles, while the Honda and Mini can only do around 140 miles at most." https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/volkswagen-id3-1st-edition-not-cheap BMW SHUTS DOWN FACTORY FOR OVER A MONTH TO PREPARE FOR I4 ELECTRIC CAR PRODUCTION "BMW announced today that it is going to shut down its Munich factory for over a month in order to prepare for the production of its next electric car, the BMW i4. It’s not uncommon for automakers to have scheduled production shutdowns in order to upgrade manufacturing lines, but this announcement from BMW today was surprising due to its length." says electrek: "The Munich factory is where BMW currently produces the 3 Series and it employs 7,800 people. Shutting down the plant for 6 weeks is going to have a major impact on the automaker’s inventory. The BMW i4 is built on BMW’s upcoming fifth-generation electric powertrain. The technology is supposed to enable BMW to produce all-electric, hybrid, and diesel/petrol cars all on the same production line. Plant director Robert Engelhorn commented on the remodel in Munich: “We are gearing up our Munich plant for the future. Once remodelling is finished, we will be able to produce vehicles with diesel, petrol and hybrid drive trains, as well as the fully-electric BMW i4, all on the same line. This will allow us to respond flexibly to customer demand.” BMW claims that the electric sedan is going to be able to achieve a range of 600 km (373 miles) on an 80kWh battery." https://electrek.co/2020/07/22/bmw-shut-down-factory-i4-electric-car-production/ AUDI IS RESEARCHING BIDIRECTIONAL CHARGING TECHNOLOGY "Increasing network stability, lowering electricity costs, and contributing to climate protection – that is the vision that Audi and the Hager Group are pursuing. The incorporation of the electric car into the domestic grid is at the core of an innovative research project on bidirectional charging. This offers major advantages in combination with a photovoltaic system in particular. Excess PV electricity can be stored temporarily and output as needed." says VW: ". At night or during non-productive times of the rate, the car then uses inexpensive electricity to charge up to the desired target SOC (state of charge). Bidirectional charging also provides a security of supply that extends beyond pure cost optimization: In the event of a blackout, the system can supply the house with energy via the high-performance HV battery or it can even operate a building without a grid connection independently in what is known as stand-alone operation." https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2020/07/energy_transition.html RENAULT MARKS MAJOR EV SHARING ORDER FROM THE UK "The UK-based electric car subscription service Onto (formerly Evezy) has ordered 1,100 Renault Zoe. The first units were already delivered." according to electrive: "The remaining vehicles are to be handed over to Onto within six months, according to Renault UK. Originally the subscription provider (then still under the name Evezy) had ordered 180 Zoe. The Zoe ordered at that time and also the now newly delivered Zoe should already be available for the customers. For a monthly fee, Onto provides the car, insurance, breakdown service, maintenance and even charging current. No down payment is required, the subscription can be cancelled or changed every month. According to Renault, the entry-level price for the Zoe is 339 pounds per month – but only for cars of the “previous generation”, i.e. those models that have already been ordered in 2017. What the subscription to the new Zoes with a 50 kW DC charger will cost is not clear from the announcement." https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/22/renault-marks-major-ev-sharing-order-from-the-uk/ SKODA ENYAQ IV: 500KM-RANGE ELECTRIC SUV TO MAKE SEPTEMBER DEBUT "Skoda has revealed its upcoming Enyaq iV will make its world debut in Prague on 1 September. The brand’s first electric SUV will be the first production model based on the MEB electric car platform and boast a range of up to 500km, which is around 311 miles. " says leasing.com: "The Enyaq will be available in rear- or four-wheel drive and offer a choice of three battery sizes and five power variants, depending on requirements. The entry-level model is the Skoda Enyaq iV 50. This has the smallest battery and will offer a maximum range of up to 340km (211 miles). Next up is the Skoda Enyaq iV 60 fitted with a 62-kWh battery that can deliver range of up to 390km (242 miles). The rear-wheel-drive Enyaq iV 80 has a 82-kWh battery and could be able to go as far as 500km." https://leasing.com/car-leasing-news/skoda-enyaq-iv/ TESLA WILL CHANGE ALLOY FOR CYBERTRUCK " Tesla will be changing the alloy it uses for the Cybertruck, CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday. After replying to Teslarati’s coverage of SpaceX building a new full-scale Starship prototype, Musk confirmed to a follower on Twitter that the automaker would also be updating the alloy of the all-electric Cybertruck that is set to begin production in late 2021." according to JOey at Teslarati: The truck’s durability was based on the fact that the 30X cold-rolled exoskeleton was the best that Tesla could find. The company was transparent that if there were a better material out there, they would use it. It seems that Tesla may have found something more durable, and it may be in tune with the new Starship. Tesla has been leveraging SpaceX welding techniques in its vehicles as well." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-cybertruck-alloy-change-elon-musk/ MERCEDES EQC SPIED ALREADY GETTING READY FOR NEW GENERATION "If you live in the United States, you still can’t put an order for the EQC, Mercedes-Benz’s first all-electric production vehicle on the global market. Even if you check the brand’s official website for the country, you’ll find the EV SUV under the Future category. "Meanwhile, as weird as it may sound, the brand is already working on the next-generation EQC." says MOtor1.com: "why is Mercedes already working on a successor for today’s model when the latter is not even on sale in the United States yet? Simply because the first-gen EQC is based on the EVA-I architecture which is also used by the current C-Class and GLC. It’s a platform designed with combustion engines in mind and there’s limited space for batteries and other physical limitations engineers had to deal with. The new EQC, however, will ride on a new, EV-dedicated architecture that should also underpin a number of other compact EVs from the brand. This platform should be capable of accommodating a larger battery pack and should also provide other benefits compared to the current one. According to the initial details, Mercedes has given the new EQC the green light for a launch at some point in 2022. This could very well mean customers in the US won’t even get the first-gen model at all." https://www.motor1.com/news/435238/new-mercedes-eqc-spied/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news You can listen to all 846 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. MUSK ANNOUNCES TESLA BASIC AUTOPILOT DEAL "With the July price increase to $8000 for FSD (Full Self-Driving) capabilities on the horizon, Tesla CEO Elon Musk dropped a surprise on Tesla owners that if they already own one of the company’s cars and don't have Autopilot installed, they can add the basic Autopilot feature for $2000 until July 1." says Car and Driver: "Currently, Tesla’s basic Autopilot features are standard on all vehicles. But if you bought one of its vehicles before this was the norm, you can now upgrade at a discount. For the company's additional FSD features—Navigate on Autopilot, automatic lane changing, auto parking, Summon, traffic light control, and future self-driving capabilities once Tesla has finalized software—you'll have to pay extra. This deal is only available for vehicles without Autopilot. For those looking to upgrade their current Autopilot suite, you might want to do so before the price is increased on July 1." @elonmusk Enabling basic Tesla Autopilot via Tesla in-app purchase is reduced to $2k until July 1 https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a32935630/musk-tesla-autopilot-upgrade-deal-june/ JAY LENO TAKES THE TESLA MODEL Y FOR A SPIN "We saw that a few weeks ago when Leno had Musk in the shop with the Cybertruck, and there's more today with the Model Y making its first appearance on the show. Leno gives it a thorough once-over before taking a spin, noting that even he thinks electrified vehicles will be common day-to-day transportation in the near future." writes Autoweek: "On the road, Leno notes the Model Y's speed, obviously, as well as the range and general driving dynamics. He also breaks down the pollution aspect and how he understands that the electricity is still coming from polluting power plants, but the vehicle itself is clean. Leno also owns a Tesla Model S, for what it's worth." https://www.autoweek.com/car-life/a32935550/jay-leno-takes-the-tesla-model-y-for-a-spin/ MUSK TWEETS TESLA MODEL Y 3-ROW 7-SEATER MAY LAUNCH SOON "When Tesla CEO Elon Musk first talked about the Model Y, he said it would be built on a brand-new platform. However, that tune changed later, when he said it would actually be built on the same platform as the Model 3 and share many of its sibling's parts, though it would have third-row seats." according to Steven Loveday at InsideEVs: "The Model Y came to market in March and is available in two all-wheel-drive versions: The Long Range and Performance. Much like the Model 3, it should be available in less expensive Standard Range variants in the future. The three-row seven-seat Model Y is also coming later. When people started getting notifications to configure their Model Y, there was some confusion, which caused plenty of speculation. The automaker was telling people to prepare for delivery of Model Y versions that weren't yet available, such as the three-row model" @elonmusk: "probably early Q4" https://insideevs.com/news/430028/elon-musk-tesla-model-y-7-seats/ TESLA BATTERY CELL PRODUCTION TOUR INCLUDED AT COMING TESLA SHAREHOLDER MEETING @elonmsusk: "Tentative date for Tesla Shareholder Meeting & Battery Day is Sept 15. Will include tour of cell production system." "Elon Musk tweeted recently that a new date has been set for the annual meeting of shareholders and Tesla Battery Day, both of which have been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. The announcement came with a bonus." says Clean Technica: "Elon said on Twitter that the event would probably be held in Fremont, California. The list of topics people want to hear about during Battery Day includes news about the so-called million-mile battery, information about what Jeff Dahn and his researchers at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia are up to, news about changes to battery chemistry, electrode composition, how the technology developed by Maxwell is being incorporated into Tesla’s batteries, how the technology developed by Maxwell is being used to manufacture batteries more cheaply, and what Tesla’s plans are in the medium to long term for producing its own battery cells (it currently produces its own modules and packs, but not the cells)." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/06/22/tesla-battery-cell-production-tour-included-at-coming-tesla-shareholder-meeting/ WELTMEISTER EX5 IMPRESSES WITH LOW BATTERY CAPACITY DEGRADATION "Launched last year in China and sold for 139.800 yuan (17.561 euros) after subsidies, the Weltmeister EX5 is a very appealing electric car sized between the Kia e-Niro and the Tesla Model Y" says PushEVs. Motor: 160 kW and 315 Nm of torque Acceleration: 0-100 km/h in 8,3 seconds On-board charger: 6,6 kW DC fast charging: 30 to 80 % in 30 minutes at 120 kW chargers Battery capacity: 69 kWh with lifetime warranty Battery weight: 432 kg Battery energy density: 160 Wh/kg, they use NCM 811 "To help alleviate concerns surrounding one important consideration among car buyers, the degradation of EV batteries over time, WM Motor has long promoted the benefits of high-quality thermal management and battery management systems (BMS) in EV’s to maintain the long-term stability of a battery’s capacity. Data from one of WM Motor’s EX5 models purchased in January 2019 has provided an insight into the car’s long-term battery degradation rate. The driver of this EX5 undertakes lengthy commutes between Wenzhou, Ningbo and Hangzhou, among other cities, and has averaged approximately 500km daily and accumulated over 200,000km of driving since purchasing the vehicle last year. Having been brought in for a regular check-up this week, the battery was found to have degraded by only 2.85% from its original capacity." "Battery data after 200.000 km (124.274 miles): Charged 90 % of the times at DC fast chargers, Charged 1.500 times (partial charges), Battery capacity only dropped by 2,85 %" https://pushevs.com/2020/06/22/weltmeister-ex5-impresses-with-low-battery-capacity-degradation/ CHINA EASES GREEN RULES TO PROMOTE REGULAR HYBRIDS "China re-classified gas-electric hybrid vehicles on Monday so they get more favorable treatment than all-gas or diesel counterparts under new clean car rules, making it easier for automakers to meet environment quotas and offer more choice." says a Reuters reports today: "Automakers in China are obliged to manufacture NEVs to win "points" to make up for a portion of the negative points they incur when they produce internal combustion engine vehicles. However, the system has been criticized for offering few incentives for automakers to improve gas-only cars' efficiency. The policy published on Monday by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology allows automakers to gradually make more gas-electric hybrids and less of the more costly all-electric vehicles from 2021 through 2023." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/06/22/china-easing-green-rules/ APPLE'S NEW IOS COURTS EV DRIVERS "Apple has announced at this year’s WWDC [that] Maps in iOS 14 will get a new “EV routing” feature, too, making it possible for users to plan trips around where and when they’ll need to charge their electric vehicles. The company previously only allowed users to route to or from certain chargers in Maps, but now it will be able to include or add chargers to a trip, even on the fly." reports The Verge: "Apple says Maps will be able to “track your current vehicle charge and factor in things like elevation to automatically add charging stops along the way,” and that it will only route to compatible chargers. Of course, to get that deeply integrated means the company needs cooperation from automakers, and so Apple said it’s only working with Ford and BMW to start." https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/22/21299325/apple-ios14-maps-updates-cycling-directions-electric-charging-wwdc-2020 QUESTION OF THE WEEK How would you like to see Green Plates or Green Stickers used to incentivize EVs? Show #726 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 23rd March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Welcome to a new PRODUCER MADS GYBEL VEJ ANDERSEN ELECTRIC CARS PRODUCE LESS CO2 THAN PETROL VEHICLES, STUDY CONFIRMS "Electric vehicles produce less carbon dioxide than petrol cars across the vast majority of the globe – contrary to the claims of some detractors, who have alleged that the CO2 emitted in the production of electricity and their manufacture outweighs the benefits." reports The Guardian today: "The finding is a boost to governments, including the UK, seeking to move to net zero carbon emissions, which will require a massive expansion of the electric car fleet. Across the world, passenger road vehicles and household heating generate about a quarter of all emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. That makes electric vehicles essential to reducing overall emissions, but how clean an electric vehicle is also depends on how the electricity is generated, the efficiency of the supply and the efficiency of the vehicle. They found that in 53 out of 59 regions, comprising 95% of the world, electric vehicles and domestic heat pumps generate less carbon dioxide than fossil fuel powered cars or boilers. The only exceptions are heavily coal-dependent countries such as Poland. In countries such as Sweden, which gets most of its electricity from renewable sources, and France, which is largely powered by nuclear, the CO2 savings from using electric cars reach as high as 70% over their conventional counterparts." Jean-Francois Mercure, of Exeter University: "“The answer is clear: to reduce carbon emissions, we should choose electric cars and household heat pumps over fossil fuel alternatives.” https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/mar/23/electric-cars-produce-less-co2-than-petrol-vehicles-study-confirms TESLA MODEL Y OWNER DISCOVERS NEW HEAT PUMP AFTER FRUNK “TEARDOWN” "Tesla Model Y saw the introduction of a new heat pump that’s designed to be more energy-efficient and provides a more reliable range in cold weather conditions" says Teslarati: "Tesla owner Erik Strait and host of the DÆrik Youtube channel recently disassembled the front trunk (“frunk”) section of the vehicle to have a closer look at the Model Y heat pump. After removing the plastic liners in the frunk, Erik was able to discover Model Y’s heat pump located on top of the front motor assembly. Coolant lines can also be seen running through the vehicle’s firewall and to a location where Tesla’s Hardware 3 computer resides." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-heat-pump-frunk-teardown/ 2021 CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8 HYBRID SPIED "Though it’s still yet to hit UK soil, first customer deliveries of the all-new, mid-engined C8 Corvette have begun in the US, with the model competing with Porsche’s 992 911 Carrera. Following previous rumours of an electrified variant, photographers have already spotted a hybrid testing on the road." writes evo.co.uk - "Though a more standard hybrisied variant with similar power to the current pure-combustion car was listed, an iteration complete with an electrified 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8 powertrain is said to produce 838bhp and a staggering 922lb ft of torque – these numbers lead us to believe that this would be the range-topping, track-oriented ZR1." https://www.evo.co.uk/chevrolet/corvette/202368/2021-chevrolet-corvette-c8-hybrid-spies-pictures JAGUAR LAND ROVER PLANS NEW ELECTRIC CROSSOVERS, THE J-PACE AND ROAD ROVER "According to a report today from UK’s Autocar, the company’s historic plant in Castle Bromwich will also produce two new electric crossovers – the Jaguar J-Pace and a Land Rover model dubbed “Road Rover.”" according to electrek: "The two new JLR models are expected to go on sale by the end of 2021. Both vehicles will be built on the new MLA (Modular Longitudinal Architecture) platform. JLR is investing £1 billion ($1.15 billion) to convert its Castle Bromwich and Solihull plants to produce MLA cars. There have been hints since last year that the Jaguar I-Pace will eventually move to the MLA platform, likely when a second-generation version is created. Vehicles built on the MLA platform are reported to use a 90.2 kWh battery." https://electrek.co/2020/03/23/jaguar-land-rover-plans-new-electric-crossovers-the-j-pace-and-road-rover/ SWISS RIDER ON HARLEY-DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE SETS ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE DISTANCE RECORD "Harley-Davidson's electric LiveWire offers about 100 miles of riding range, so it's not as well suited to long road trips as its gasoline-powered siblings, but that doesn't mean it can't go the distance. Swiss rider Michel von Tell proved that by setting a new 24-hour distance record (albeit an unofficial one) on Harley's first electric model." reports Autoblog: "Von Toll's record-setting, 1,070-mile trip took him to four countries in 23 hours and 48 minutes. He covered this distance on his own, and he comfortably beat the old, 818-mile record set in 2018 by a team of seven riders who took turns going around a test track on a Zero SR. Data like how much electricity Von Toll used during his trip and how many times he stopped to charge will be published by Harley-Davidson in the coming days." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/03/23/harley-davidson-livewire-electric-motorcycle-distance-record/ AUDI E-TRON HYBRID COMING 2021 "The 2021 Audi A3 Sedan will be on sale in the United States before the end of the year, according to Car and Driver citing inside sources. The A3 sedan in the U.S. will come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with mild-hybrid assistance that will make about 240 horsepower (179 kilowatts)" says Motor1.com: "In comparison, the A3 hatchback in Europe offers buyers significantly more options. The base unit is a 1.0-liter three-cylinder with 110 hp (82 kW). There's also a 1.5-liter unit available with or without mild-hybrid assistance, and both have 150 hp (112 kW). A 2.0-liter turbodiesel comes with either 116 hp (87 kW) or 150 hp. Two plug-in hybrid versions are coming later using a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, electric motor, and six-speed dual-clutch gearbox." https://www.motor1.com/news/405359/2021audi-a3-sedan-rumors/ POD POINT TO DEPLOY TRITIUM DC CHARGERS ACROSS THE UK "The British charging provider Pod Point (recently acquired by EDF), has selected Australian manufacturer Tritium as a preferred supplier of DC fast chargers." write InsideEVs: "The agreement concerns the Veefil-RT 50 kW DC chargers, which will be used in "existing and future network rollouts across the United Kingdom". Probably soon the units will be installed on a high scale at Tesco stores in the UK, as Pod Point, Volkswagen and Tesco are equipping 600 stores with charging infrastructure." "The agreement ensures Tritium’s Veefil-RT 50kW DC rapid charger, renowned for its compact design, ease of use and low maintenance, will be offered to Pod Point’s new and existing customers as part of its continuing nationwide EV charging network rollout. Pod Point chose Tritium as its preferred DC rapid charger supplier due to the proven reliability of Tritium’s chargers, the ease and speed of installation and their unique design, which enable Pod Point to offer selected customers the ability to add their branding to each charger." https://insideevs.com/news/405371/pod-point-tritium-dc-chargers-uk/ PORSCHE RENEWS PLAN TO MAKE MACAN CROSSOVER A "FULLY BATTERY-POWERED MODEL SERIES" "Porsche is continuing plans to make the Macan crossover all-electric. It's a significant move, as the Macan is currently Porsche's bestselling model. In a report of its 2019 financial results, Porsche reiterated that the Macan will be the "second, fully battery-powered model series"—after the Taycan." says Green Car Reprots: "The automaker previously said the electric Macan would launch in 2022; it will arrive after the upcoming Taycan Cross Turismo wagon. Porsche has said the electric Macan will replace the gasoline model entirely, but it has left the door open for the current-generation Macan to be sold alongside the all-electric next-generation model. Porsche's wording likely signals that the company doesn't intend for that transition to last long." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127535_porsche-renews-plan-to-make-macan-crossover-a-fully-battery-powered-model-series QUESTION OF THE WEEK How can the EV community all come together at this time to support each other? GM is making enhancements to Energy Assist, a standard feature available in the myChevrolet mobile app for Bolt EV owners. Energy Assist, first available for customers back in 2017, currently enables Bolt EV owners to plan and manage their routes more effectively, locate available charging stations – both along their route and in the area – monitor their route and receive real-time alerts if their range projections change dramatically. Energy Assist is integrated with data from the vehicle, which enables intelligent planning and precise charge time predictions. GM is now displaying dynamic data from charging networks EVgo and ChargePoint within Energy Assist, and information provided by charging networks includes real-time data on charge station status to indicate if a charging station is available. At eligible charging stations, owners can now link their EVgo account to activate and pay for charging sessions right from the myChevrolet mobile app, eliminating the need to toggle between apps and streamline the payment process. Eligible charging stations are noted within the myChevrolet mobile app. TESLA FIRMWARE REVEALS ~110 KWH BATTERY PACK "Tesla is working on a new 110 kWh battery pack configuration that can stretch range well beyond 400 miles, according to a new discovery made in Tesla’s battery management system (BMS) firmware." says Teslarati: "Jason Hughes, a notable Tesla owner and hacker who first uncovered the company’s plans for a “P100D” variant in 2016, found references to a larger battery pack capacity in the latest BMS firmware. “There is a packID that starts life set to ~109 kWh usable (400+ miles),” noted Hughes via Twitter, further suggesting that Tesla might be preparing for a battery pack as large as 115 kWh in capacity when factoring Tesla’s battery reserve. Additionally, Hughes discovery points to a new battery pack configuration with 108 cells per group at ~450 volts per pack that could very well be a universal design to replace the aging Model S and Model X battery pack, while centralizing architecture for the Model 3 and upcoming Model Y." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-110-kwh-battery-pack-400-miles-range/ A LOOK INSIDE THE NEW LOTUS EVIJA PRODUCTION FACILITY "The new assembly hall is next to the Lotus test track where each of the 130 Evijas to be hand-assembled will be tested before delivery. Lotus says series production and first customer deliveries begin in the summer, with the first year’s production allocation of the circa £2m hypercar already assigned." reports Goodwood.com: "Lotus says the Evija employs its two thousand metric horsepower to get to 62mph in under 3.0 seconds and (more significant) goes from 0-186mph in under 9.0 seconds. The top speed is past 200mph." https://www.goodwood.com/grr/road/news/2020/2/a-look-inside-the-lotus-evija-production-facility/ LITHIUM-ION BATTERY CELL DENSITIES HAVE ALMOST TRIPLED SINCE 2010 "BloombergNEF‘s Colin McKerracher took to the stage at the BloombergNEF Summit in San Francisco last week where he made a case for electric vehicles reaching the “end of the beginning.” The case for electric vehicles moving into the mainstream or out of the early adopter stage of growth has been fueled by the increase in energy density in lithium-ion batteries and the corresponding drop in cost that comes along with it." says Kylie Field for Cleantechnica: ". As energy density increases, more energy can be extracted from a battery pack of the same weight. “Battery energy densities keep getting better,” Colin McKerracher, Head of Advanced Transport at BloombergNEF, said. “They’ve almost tripled at the cell level since 2010.”. McKerracher commented about battery pricing as well, noting that the price of lithium-ion batteries has continued to fall in recent years. The trend is expected to continue in 2020, with BloombergNEF estimating a price drop from $156/kWh in 2019 to $135/kWh in 2020." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/02/19/bloombergnef-lithium-ion-battery-cell-densities-have-almost-tripled-since-2010/ AMERICAN MANGANESE ANNOUNCES UP TO 99.72 PERCENT PURITY FROM RECYCLING TEST "American Manganese Inc. The car enthusiast magazine states, the "previous battery-electric vehicle (BEV) record holder was the Tesla Model S P100D (aka "Plood") Ludicrous+ with its 10.51-second pass at 125.0 mph." However, the tested Taycan Turbo S went "a significant 5.7 mph faster with a 10.47-second, 130.7-mph pass."" https://insideevs.com/news/399558/porsche-taycan-quarter-mile-record/ PORSCHE TAYCAN REPORTEDLY GETTING ENHANCED BATTERY PACK "Porsche is reportedly planning to roll out an enhanced battery pack for Taycan Turbo, Turbo S, and 4S." says Teslarati: "The news about the Porsche Taycan’s enhanced battery pack come amid a barrage of negative reports about the electric car, many of which were driven by the vehicle’s subpar EPA range ratings. Whether it will come as a software or hardware update, this development can help reshape the negative narrative around the Porsche Taycan so far. In December, the Environmental Protection Agency estimated the range of the Taycan Turbo at 201 miles per charge, which shows it lags behind competitors such as Tesla, Audi, and Jaguar. " https://www.teslarati.com/porsche-taycan-enhanced-battery-better-range/ VOLKSWAGEN AND PARTNER ASSOCIATION AGREE NEW SALES MODEL FOR ID. Volkswagen and “Volkswagen und Audi Partnerverband” (Volkswagen and Audi partner association) have agreed a new sales model for the all-electric ID. family in Germany. A format similar to the agency model for major customers that has already proven its worth over many years will also apply for ID. models sold to private customers and small commercial enterprises. Following the go-ahead from retail partners, the agency agreement is to be added to the new dealer contracts that come into effect from April. In their role as agents, dealers make the arrangements for selling the ID. family to private customers and small commercial enterprises. This primarily relates to acquisition, sales consultation, organizing test drives, transaction processing and vehicle handover in coordination with Volkswagen. The customer’s preferred dealer receives a commission and a bonus identical to showroom-based business, even if the vehicle is bought online. At the same time, the partner is no longer tasked with vehicle financing and the sales process is simplified because the partner no longer needs to negotiate the price. https://www.volkswagen-newsroom.com/en/press-releases/volkswagen-and-partner-association-agree-new-sales-model-for-id-family-in-germany-5793 LEVC STARTS MAKING RANGE EXTENDER VANS "The maker of Britain’s iconic black cabs is building a plug-in hybrid van that can travel for 377 miles without recharging or filling up, in a bid to win over long-distance delivery firms and other companies that rely on purely gasoline vehicles." says Bloomberg.com: "The as-yet unnamed one-ton van goes on sale in October and is derived from the TX5 London taxi launched two years ago. The vehicle can run for 80 miles on its electric motor, after which a 1.5.-liter “range extender” engine kicks in to recharge the battery and increase its span to almost five times that. “You get zero emissions in the city but you can also drive the length of the country with the range extender, so range anxiety becomes a thing of the past. LEVC, owned by China’s Geely sold 2,500 TX cabs last year, almost all of them in the U.K. That was more than double the total for 2018. That still leaves huge untapped capacity at its plant near Coventry in central England, which is capable of churning out 20,000 autos annually.” https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-19/range-busting-electric-van-targets-parcel-firms-to-plumbers NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… Are you happy to pay extra for add-on features or apps for your EV, after you’ve bought it? Show #643 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 16th November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. BMW I4 FIRST SPECS LEAKED: 530 HP, 373 MILES OF RANGE "The BMW i4 EV will go into production in 2021, part of the automaker's big offensive to launch 25 new electrified vehicles by 2023. The i4 will be BMW's proper competitor to the Tesla Model 3, and based on new information Roadshow learned on Thursday, it should put up a proper fight." according to CNET: "The BMW i4 will initially be powered by an 80-kilowatt-hour battery, producing about 390 kilowatts, or roughly 530 horsepower. Accelerating to 62 mph will take about 4 seconds flat, and the i4 will have an electronically limited top speed of 120 mph.The i4 will use BMW's new, so-called Generation 5 battery packs, which are significantly smaller than the Generation 3 and 4 packs used in the company's current EVs. This makes the cells easier to package in the vehicle's floor, and allows them to be more easily scaled for smaller or larger applications. These Generation 5 batteries are also stronger, meaning they can better handle fast-charging situations. BMW says that, on a 150-kW DC fast charger, the i4 should be able to achieve an 80% charge in about 35 minutes." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2021-bmw-i4-official-details/ VOLKSWAGEN GROUP TO INVEST ~€60B IN HYBRIDIZATION, ELECTRIC MOBILITY AND DIGITALIZATION OVER NEXT 5 YEARS "Under the Volkswagen Group’s Planning Round 68, the investment plan for 2020 to 2024, the Group plans to spend nearly €60 billion (US$66 billion) on the future areas of hybridization, electric mobility and digitalization over the next five years." This amounts to slightly more than 40% of the company’s investments in property, plant and equipment and all research and development costs during the planning period. Compared with the Group’s last Planning Round, it represents an increase of around 10 percentage points. The Group intends to invest around €33 billion (US$36 billion) of this figure in electric mobility alone." "About 20 million of the e-vehicles planned through 2029 will be based on the Group’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB). Most of the remaining 6 million vehicles will be based on the High Performance Platform (PPE)." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/11/20191115-vwag.html TESLA MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE’S 0-60 MPH ACCELERATION "Tesla Model 3 Performance vehicles are getting faster 0-60 mph acceleration through the latest power optimization software update." says Electrek: "There are now reports that the Model 3 Performance’s 0-60 mph time has dipped below the 3-second mark. We have seen the update make a difference in drag races between a Model 3 Performance that received the update versus one that didn’t, but now we get some new impressive numbers about the performance after the upgrade. In the previous race, the owner said that the vehicle was getting a 3.2-second, 0-60 mph acceleration, which was already a significant improvement. Now DragTimes reports that the Model 3 Performance is getting a 0-60 mph acceleration time just under 3 seconds" https://electrek.co/2019/11/14/tesla-model-3-performance-0-60-mph-acceleration-dips-below-3-sec-software-update/ TESLA MODEL 3 MID-RANGE NOW GOES 0-60MPH IN 4.9S "When Tesla released the Mid-Range Model 3, it was positioned as an entry-level vehicle that is designed to provide a practical, reasonably-priced way for customers to get into the company’s ecosystem. The Mid-Range Model 3 was thus conservatively specced, with performance figures that were closer to that of the Standard Range Model 3 than the more expensive Long Range AWD variant." reports Simon at Teslarati: "The Mid-Range Model 3 was ultimately retired upon the arrival of the Standard Range and Standard Range Plus. Tesla owner-enthusiast nukem384, who owns a Mid-Range Model 3, recently tested his vehicle’s acceleration after receiving the electric car maker’s most recent performance update. In the Tesla owner’s tests, the Mid-Range Model 3 was able to sprint from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds consistently." TESLA MODEL 3 MOTOR TREND CAR OF THE YEAR? "Not only did Motor Trend (MT) choose the Tesla Model 3 as one of three finalists for its 2020 Car of the Year award, but it also calls the entry-level Tesla midsize sedan the best sport sedan available today." says Steven Loveday at InsideEVs. According to MotorTrend: "The 2020 Model 3 is the best sport sedan on the market. The 2020 Model 3’s interior design continues to be modern and minimalistic, but it’s elegant in its simplicity. The 2020 Model 3’s seats offer more bolstering, and rear passengers now enjoy a more ergonomic position, as the bench has been raised for improved comfort. In terms of driving, the Model 3 offers impressive dynamic performance as well as battery-pack range that continues to be the benchmark for electric vehicles." https://insideevs.com/news/382549/tesla-model-3-motor-trend-car-year/ POLESTAR DETAILS NEW LEASING OFFERS "Volvo’s luxury branch Polestar now offers its first electric model with new leasing rates in Sweden and Germany. The Polestar 2 starts from €599 a month in Germany based on 48 months and mileage of 10,000 kilometres per year." says Electrive: "Polestar also covers routine maintenance and services, including electric vehicle collection and delivery for the first three years. Polestar follows a unique (or Tesla-like) sales concept with sales being made online and in so-called Polestar Spaces. By the end of 2020, Polestar aims to open a total of 50 stores worldwide. Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, considers the new leasing offers to have “competitive conditions and good specifications,” designed to rival the Tesla Model 3." https://www.electrive.com/2019/11/15/polestar-details-new-leasing-offers-for-first-electric-car/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… If you had to pick ONE upside to driving an EV, what would be it be? Show #642 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 15th November 2019. FORD MUSTANG MACH E SPECS LEAKED Foxnews.com kicks us off: "A fumble at Ford may have spoiled its electric pony party. The reservation website for the battery-powered Mustang Mach-E apparently went live for a brief period on Thursday night, revealing pricing and performance details ahead of its scheduled debut in Los Angeles on Nov. 17. The pages were spotted by a member of the Mach E Forum fansite, who screengrabbed and posted them before they were disabled. Ford has not commented on the mishap, but has also not denied the authenticity of the information, which may not represent the final specifications." From Autoblog: "A tinted panoramic roof fills the space overhead, over an interior playing up the minimalist possibilities. A traditional steering wheel gets controls on the spokes, and behind it, a 10.2-inch digital cluster. To the right of the steering wheel, what we'll guess is the start/stop button rests on the instrument panel. In the center of the dash resides a 15.5-inch, vertically-oriented rectangular touchscreen with some kind of dial-looking appendage at the bottom. For cargo, there's 29 cubic feet behind the second row, 59.6 cu-ft behind the first row — and a front trunk with 4.8 cubic feet." Motor Authority on the Mustang heritage: "The exterior of the Mach-E looks every bit inspired by the Mustang badge planted on the front. The LED head and taillights are nearly cribbed from the Mustang but feature their own distinct design elements. The roofline is fast and it will be interesting to find out how much head room is in the rear seat. A glass roof is available, but it's yet to be seen if it'll be standard." Electrek breaks down the variants: Models/Pricing (pre-incentive prices, all models get $7,500 US tax credit): First Edition: $59,900 MSRP (EPA est. 270 miles, mid 5-second, AWD, 19” wheels) Select: $43,895 MSRP (EPA est. 230 miles, mid 5-second, AWD or RWD, 18” wheels) Premium: $50,600 MSRP (EPA est. 300 miles, mid 5-second, AWD or RWD, 19” wheels) California Route 1: $52,400 (EPA est. 300 miles, mid 6-second, AWD, 18” wheels) GT: $60,500 (EPA est. 235 miles, mid 3-second, AWD, 20” wheels All cars will come standard with Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 2.0 According to Roadshow by CNET: "Even with all that range, charging is always a concern, and Ford's leak says that the Mach-E will recoup 47 miles of range in 10 minutes when hooked up to a 150-kW DC fast charger. Things really start to get interesting once you see the inside of the Mach-E thanks to its vast, vertically-oriented touchscreen that definitely reminds us of the one in the Tesla Model S, and that's not a bad vehicle to be compared to." Tech Crunch likes the styling: "It looks like a panorama roof is an option, and that hatchback will probably please a lot of small SUV fans. There’s also something funky going on with the door handles – the front ones appear very small and near the base of the door windows, while I’m not sure how exactly it works on the rear passenger doors based on these photos. There’s also a panoramic sunroof at least as an option, and you can see the interior looks pretty blatantly Tesla -inspired, with a large vertical touchscreen taking up most of the center of the dash – albeit with something that looks like a large physical dial right at the base, instead of going for fully touch-only input. A second digital display appears to replace the instrument cluster behind the steering wheel." From Autocar: "Ford also announced today that it will begin taking deposits for the Mustang Mach-E in the US and Europe immediately after it's revealed, with the first wave of buyers being offered the option of a highly specced First Edition model. However, full pricing hasn't yet been announced, while Chinese buyers won't be able to put down a deposit until a later date. The new car is the first Ford designed as an electric car from the ground up, with a bespoke new platform enabling both rear and four-wheel drive. It will crown the brand’s wide-reaching electrification plan under which European customers will be offered a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric version of every new model launched. " And back to Autoblog: "Standard features for all models include LED headlights and taillights, the side-door E-Latch and using a smartphone as a key, wireless phone charging, memory seats, navigation, Ford CoPilot 360 and 360 Assist 2.0, and an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty on the battery. The entry-level Select trim can't be ordered with the panoramic roof, and makes tech like memory seats, power folding mirrors, and foot-activated tailgate optional. The panoramic roof is an option on the performance-focused GT, as are Active Park Assist and the 360-degree camera that come standard on every other trim but Select" Finally we're short of battery info but Electrek does the maths: "Finally, though shots don’t tell us the electric car’s battery capacity, they do tell us the approximate charge rate. Ford claims the car will be able to charge 47 miles in 10 minutes on a 150 kW charger. If the car has capacity of ~80 kWh for the 300-mile version, this suggests a DC charge speed of closer to ~80kW, which is a little on the low side compared to the competition. Show #624 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 28th October 2019. TESLA TO UNLOCK EXTENDED RANGE FOR WILDFIRES "Tesla owners living in areas affected by the ongoing CA wildfires will be able to tap into the maximum range offered by their vehicles, even if they purchased trims that feature a software-limited battery pack. The update was confirmed by CEO Elon Musk on Twitter Monday morning." says Simon at Teslarati: " owners of electric cars such as the Model S 40, Model S 60, and Model S 70 will be able to gain extra range for their electric cars. This is made possible by Tesla equipping the vehicles with a larger battery pack that is software-locked. The Model S 40, for example, is equipped with a 60 kWh battery that’s software-limited to 40 kWh. Tesla is yet to confirm if the Standard Range Model 3 will also have its full battery capacity unlocked. Musk’s recent tweet seems to confirm that free unlimited Supercharging will also be enabled for owners in areas that are affected by the ongoing CA wildfires. " https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-range-upgrade-ca-wildfires-elon-musk/ TESLA CUTS PRICE OF SOLAR AND POWERWALL INSTALLATIONS FOR PEOPLE AFFECTED BY WILDFIRES "Elon Musk says that Tesla is focusing installations for people affected by the California wildfires: “Apologies to those waiting for Solar/Powerwall outside California, as we are prioritizing those affected by wildfires.” The CEO even said that they are offering $1,000 discounts to them" according to Electrek: "Musk has especially been talking about the capacity to avoid power outages by combining solar power with Powerwall battery packs. The CEO says that Tesla Energy is becoming a distributed global utility and it could outgrow its automotive business." GENERAL MOTORS SIDES WITH TRUMP "General Motors, Fiat Chrysler and Toyota say the reason they’re backing the Trump administration in its assault on California’s decades-old campaign to reduce auto emissions is to avoid fragmenting the industry in search of a single national environmental standard." reports The LA TImes: " Those companies and the coalition, which includes such other manufacturers as Subaru, Hyundai, Mazda and Nissan, filed a brief for the defense — that is, the Trump administration — in a lawsuit challenging its effort to roll back existing auto emission and mileage standards." https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2019-10-29/automakers-trump-emissions MINI COOPER SE ELECTRIC CAR PRICES FOR US MARKET "MINI was one of the first auto manufacturers to offer a battery electric version of a production car. In 2009, it began leasing its MINI E, a modified version of the popular MINI Cooper, in selected US markets. That car had an EPA range of 100 miles" according to Steve Hanley for CleanTechnica: "Now the battery electric MINI Cooper SE is ready for its debut in world markets and the company has just announced its starting price in the US will be $29,900 plus $850 shipping and handling. The first cars will reach dealers in America in March of 2020. With federal, state, and local incentives, a new MINI Cooper SE could cost as little as $17,900 and come with special privileges such as access to HOV lanes during commuting hours." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/10/28/mini-cooper-se-electric-car-prices-for-us-market-announced/ MINI COOPER SE ELECTRIC CAR STARTS AS LOW AS $17,900 Meanwhile electrek notes: "When BMW unveiled the production version of the electric Mini Cooper SE earlier this year, some people were disappointed by the fact that the vehicle was based on the older BMW i3 electric platform. It’s equipped with the i3’s older 32.6 kWh battery pack, which Mini says is good for a range of 235 to 270 km (146-168 miles) based on the WLTP cycle. It means closer to 130 miles on the EPA cycle. The battery pack is limited to 50 kW DC fast-charging and it feeds a 135 kW/184 hp motor." https://electrek.co/2019/10/28/mini-cooper-se-electric-car-price-us/ RENAULT’S K-ZE OFFERED CHINA HEADS TO EUROPE "Renault is planning a modified version of the City K-ZE small electric car offered at competitive prices in China for the European market. However, the price for Europe is still unclear, as is the brand under which the K-ZE will be sold in Europe." says Electrive: " it is most likely that the European version of the City K-ZE will be offered by the Renault brand Dacia. Renault presented the K-ZE at the Shanghai Motor Show in April, and the car has been on sale since September for 61,800 yuan, the equivalent of just under 7,900 euros. It has an engine power of 33 kW, a torque of 125 Nm and a 26.8 kWh rechargeable battery" https://www.electrive.com/2019/10/28/renaults-k-ze-offered-china-heads-to-europe/ WORLD’S LARGEST STORAGE BATTERY — 2.5 GWH A site on Vernon Avenue in Queens, New York, once was home to 16 gas powered peaker plants. Only 2 remain in operation today. Soon, all of them will be demolished to make room for a 316 MW/2528 MWh storage battery that will be the largest in the world. The proposal to build the new facility was approved last week by the New York Public Service Commission." reports CleanTechnica: "The proposed storage project will consist of 136 battery storage and inverter units, 64 of which will be double stacked on the property." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/10/28/worlds-largest-storage-battery-2-5-gwh-to-replace-gas-peaker-plants-in-queens/ FORD OF EUROPE PILOTING GEOFENCING AND BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY "Ford is extending its European plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) trial to Cologne. The study, which is also testing Ford PHEVs on the streets of London and Valencia, Spain, aims to better analyse and show the real-world benefits of such vehicles for the environment and for commercial vehicle owners and operators." says Green Car Congress: "Each of the 10 PHEVs in the 12-month Cologne trial features the FordPass Connect on-board cellular modem, and a plug-in device which enables the geofencing and blockchain capabilities. Whenever a trial vehicle enters a controlled zone, its electric-drive mode is triggered and the zero-emission driving green miles are documented. The emissions mode and time that vehicles enter or leave a controlled zone are recorded to a secure distributed ledger—a blockchain—ensuring emissions data is safely stored and shared among relevant parties including city authorities and the vehicle or fleet owners." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/10/20191028-ford.html THE FIRST GAS STATION TO CONVERT TO AN EV-CHARGING STATION IN AMERICA From Jalopnik: "About a month ago, RS Automotive opened in Takoma Park, Maryland, as the first U.S. gas station that’s been converted fully to an EV charging station, reports NPR. Its owner, Depeswar Doley, has kept the station looking largely the same as a regular gas station, so sometimes there’s confusion from drivers who pull up with their internal combustion engine cars, looking to fill up." “A lot of them pull up and get upset” https://jalopnik.com/this-is-the-first-gas-station-to-convert-to-an-ev-charg-1839412347 QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… Set by listener Martin Young: “What were some of your biggest surprises about living with a BEV?” I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 256 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #570 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 4th September 2019. PORSCHE TAYCAN REVEALED In the words of company boss Oliver Blume the Porsche Taycan is the start of a new era. 2 motors – front and rear axle 93.4kWh battery 270 kW peak charge rate 265 kW regenerative braking capacity 761 horsepower 2-speed transmission All-wheel drive Top speed: 161mph 0-62mph: 2.8 seconds Range: Up to 257 miles Time to charger up to 80% capacity: 22.5 minutes Boot space: 447 litres (front 81 litres, rear 366 litres) up to 450 km (280 miles) (WLTP) "The Porsche Taycan is finally here, and the Turbo trim, which is the base model at launch, starts at $150,900 in the United States. Going for the more powerful Turbo S takes the price to $185,000. The online configurator for the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S are already available, and fully loading a Turbo S takes the price to $241,500." according to Motor1. Let's kick off with the Porsche presentation, 40 mins long but don't worry, this is everything you need to know without all the corportate publicity guff or frankly, the truly awful sound glitches and long periods of silences that showed up on the Youtube stream. [megacut] Let's start with an intro from Clint Simone at Motor1.com: [clip] The Verge says: "consider these important specs: the top-end version, the Taycan Turbo S, will have a 93kWh battery pack that gets a WLTP-estimated 450 km (~280 miles) of range. That’s about 40 miles more than the base Tesla Model S. The Taycan’s regenerative braking will feed energy back into the battery at rates of up to 265kW, which is very impressive. Of course, there was no mention of Dieselgate during the 40-plus-minute presentation. Porsche first unveiled the prototype Taycan, then called the Mission E, back in 2015, just a few days before the scandal broke. Since then, Volkswagen, Porsche’s parent company, has made a hard shift into electric vehicles, and the Taycan is the first major push into that new market." A very cool use of a spoiler which I hadn't read anything about in all the preview pieces: [top gear] Talking of stopping, Motor1 has this to say about brakes: "The Taycan's brakes are unlike any ever fitted to a Porsche. They could – and this isn't a joke or an exaggeration – last for 20 to 30 years. That's because the transmission, rather than the physical brakes, handle 90 percent of braking events. The front transmission can apply up to 221 lb-ft (300 Nm) of recuperative torque, while the rear gearbox packs 406 lb-ft (550 Nm). Considering this, we’d argue the physical brakes, featuring dust-reducing tungsten-carbide surface coating, are a bit overkill. Up front, there are 10-piston monoblock calipers clamping down on 16.3-in (415-mm) rotors" Autogefuhl had a look at the app: [clip] And what about the platform which could be used for other VW group cars such as the Audi e-tron GT: "The Taycan arrives on a brand new fully-electric platform known as J1, and will be built in new facilities at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen home in Stuttgart. The battery uses lithium-ion pouch cells, arranged to allow a small well in the floor of the car for rear passenger foot room. The Taycan shares some of its suspension components with the Panamera, and also features four-wheel steering as standard. At low speeds, the rear axle will turn in the opposite direction to the front to promote low speed agility, while at pace they’ll turn together to aid stability. Three-chamber air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management is also included, enabling a softer setup for cruising, a harder setup for performance and track driving, and a lift function for additional ride height. " Edmunds has this to say about the two speed gearbox: [clip] As for the technicals, Autocar say: "Although the Taycan’s 90kWh battery pushes the car’s weight above 2.2 tonnes, the Taycan has the lowest centre of gravity of any Porsche on sale today – and close to the 918 Spyder’s – and weight distribution is a near ideal 49:51. Throttle response is five times quicker than on a combustion engined car, for instance, traction control 10 times faster and torque vectoring front to rear five times faster, while an electronic limited slip differential can respond to wheelslip 50 times faster than a mechanical set-up. Porsche Stability Management can be used, sit in a Sport mode that offers limited intervention or, crucially for enthusiasts, be switched off entirely. " In their conclusion, Autogeful noted Porsche's size and choice of interiors: [clip] Some extras not about the car but about ownership, from Motor1.com: "During the first three years of ownership, the first 30 minutes at Electrify America stations is free for Taycan drivers via the Porsche Charging Service. But while that gives you a place to charge, the Porsche Charging Planner is the real star. Working alongside the navigation system, the Charging Planner does a few key things. First, it looks at the route and plots the shortest, fastest path (we'd classify that as the minimum responsibility of a navigation system, after all) and then continuously monitors conditions along the way. If, though, the Charging Planner realizes the Taycan's battery is going to be a bit low – 13 percent or less – upon arrival, it factors in charge stops, reorienting the route based on where the battery will get the fastest recharge rate. A 50-kW DC charger might be right off the freeway exit, but if there's a 270-kW charger 10 minutes out of the way that will cut the charge time in half, Charge Planner takes that into account when plotting the journey. Once that's settled, the system will also precondition the battery to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, a temperature that allows the fastest of fast charges. With a route engaged, a journey timeline shows when and where to stop, and even how long to charge for." Now we've talked about the Taycan, let's look at the competition with Bloomberg: "Despite all its engineering muscle as the world’s largest automaker, VW has struggled to slow Tesla’s march. The debut of the e-Tron, a challenger to the Model X sport-utility vehicle, was marred by delays and a recall. Tesla chief Elon Musk has meanwhile stretched downmarket with the lower-priced Model 3, which started selling in Europe this year and is about to begin production in China. The technologically refined car will go head-to-head with Tesla’s aging Model S, after Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar and Audi opted for SUVs to kickstart their electric-car offerings. Tesla is facing concerns over whether it can deliver sustainable profits amid waning demand for its older models while sales rise for the cheaper Model 3." https://www.motor1.com/news/368730/2020-porsche-taycan-debut-official/ https://www.motor1.com/features/368891/2020-porsche-taycan-configurator/ https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/porsche/taycan/92807/new-all-electric-2020-porsche-taycan-bolts-in-with-up-to-750bhp https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motor-shows/new-porsche-taycan-arrives-pivotal-electric-sports-car https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-09-04/porsche-unwraps-debut-e-car-in-backdrop-of-water-wind-and-fire?srnd=hyperdrive QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. Show #563 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 27th August 2019. Hello to new PATREON PRODUCER PELLE KROG 10 stories to bring you today. POLESTAR OPENS NEW PRODUCTION CENTRE IN CHINA Polestar, the electric performance brand, today opens its first production facility, a key milestone for the rapidly growing car company. The new Polestar Production Centre in Chengdu, China, sets a new industry benchmark in electric vehicle manufacture and will produce the Polestar 1 – an exclusive, carbon fibre-bodied Electric Performance Hybrid. The facility, which has been completed on schedule, will produce vehicles for both China and global export markets with first customer deliveries expected before the end of 2019. The inauguration underlines China’s maturing industrialisation, an improving reputation for quality manufacturing, and, crucially, access to the right skills. Five hundred Polestar 1 cars are planned to be built per year in the new Chengdu facility, with a total of 1,500 planned over a three year production cycle. https://www.polestar.com/press-release/2019/08/27/polestar-announces-world-manufacturer-identifier-and-opens-new-production-centre-in-china ELON MUSK IS RUMORED TO UNVEIL FIRST CHINA-MADE TESLA MODEL 3 AT EVENT THIS WEEK "Tesla CEO Elon Musk is going to Shanghai later this week, and he is now rumored to unveil the first China-made Tesla Model 3 at an event on Thursday." reports Fred at Electrek who does say you should take this one with a pinch of salt: "On Thursday, Musk is set to kick off the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai with a fireside chat with Alibaba cofounder Jack Ma. Musk confirmed that he also plans to launch a Chinese division of his Boring Company during the trip. Both of those things don’t have much to do with Tesla, but Shanghai is also where Tesla is currently building Gigafactory 3, the automaker’s first Chinese factory. Now local media reports are suggesting that Musk also plans to unveil the first China-made Tesla Model 3 at the WAIC." https://electrek.co/2019/08/27/elon-musk-tesla-china-made-model-3-rumor/ THE UPGRADED VW PLUG-IN HYBRID "The Volkswagen Passat GTE has been given an EV range boost thanks to a larger capacity lithium-ion battery pack." reports CarAdvice.com.au: "The Passat GTE's battery capacity has been boosted from 9.9kWh to 13kWh. Electric-only driving range under the WLTP standard is now rated at 56 kilometres for the sedan, and 54km in the wagon. With this boost in battery capacity, Volkswagen claims the Passat GTE is capable of completing most commutes around major European cities without any tailpipe emissions. The rest of the drivetrain remains unchanged with a 115kW 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine and an 85kW electric motor built into the six-speed dual-clutch transmission." https://www.caradvice.com.au/787212/2020-volkswagen-passat-gte-gains-bigger-battery/ FARADAY FUTURE RUMORED TO RESTRUCTURE "Embattled Chinese electric vehicle maker Faraday Future (FF) has added another chapter to its tumultuous history, as the company is rumored to be restructuring its organization and CEO Jia Yueting will step down as the firm’s leader." according to PenDaily.com: "Following FF’s very public break up with the Chinese real estate giant and lead financier, Evergrande Group, the electric vehicle company lacked the funds to continue much of its operations. FF was forced to lay off many employees and sell its Los Angeles headquarters. With Jia stepping down as the leader of the firm, the company should be able to try and revive itself, whether that is via a joint venture partnership or some other type of structural reorganization." https://pandaily.com/faraday-future-to-restructure-ceo-to-step-down/ BMW IX3 TO BE AVAILABLE IN EUROPE FIRST IN 2020 "As we approach 2020, the picture of BMW iX3 market launch becomes clearer. This new model, actually the first with the 5th EV generation drivetrain from BMW, is scheduled for production in China in 2020 by BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture in Shenyang." so says InsideEVs: "Unofficially, the first version of the iX3 will be rear-wheel-drive with a 75 kWh battery pack named sDrive75. With more than 200 kW of power, probably up to around 200 miles of real-world range and 150 kW DC fast-charging capability, the most important factor will be the price - it must be competitive with the highly anticipated Tesla Model Y. sales to start in 2020 in Europe, then also in China and North America" https://insideevs.com/news/367360/bmw-ix3-first-in-europe/ ELECTRIFIED ICEBREAKER REACHES NORTH POLE "A Norwegian Coast Guard icebreaker equipped with ABB’s Azipod electric propulsion system has reached the North Pole as part of an international environmental research expedition." according to electrive: "The KV Svalbard, built in 2001, was on its way in Arctic waters as part of the Coordinated Arctic Acoustic Thermometry Experiment (CAATEX). The expedition aims to place seabed sensors with which scientists could monitor water temperatures in Arctic waters. Such sensors at and around the North Pole are now expanding the researchers’ database." https://www.electrive.com/2019/08/26/electrified-icebreaker-reaches-north-pole/ WORLD PREMIERE FOR “NEW VOLKSWAGEN” AT THE FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW At this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the Volkswagen brand is celebrating two world premieres. In addition to the full-electric ID.3, the brand is presenting its new logo and its new brand design to the public under the motto of “New Volkswagen”. SONNEN, ROCKY MOUNTAIN POWER TO DEPLOY 12.6MWH VIRTUAL POWER PLANT "Rapidly-globalising energy storage company Sonnen has teamed up with utility Rocky Mountain Power to take its virtual power plant concept to the US state of Utah." writes energy-storage.news: "an apartment complex of 600 homes in Herriman, Utah, will be equipped with 5MW of solar PV and a total of 12.6MWh of battery energy storage, aggregated together from individual units in each apartment. When it is completed by the end of December 2020, with residents set to start moving in this September, Sonnen’s Utah project is claimed to be the “largest fully installed and operational residential battery demand response solution in the United States”. https://www.energy-storage.news/news/sonnen-rocky-mountain-power-to-deploy-12.6mwh-virtual-power-plant-in-utah VATTENFALL & MHI VESTAS INAUGURATE 407 MEGAWATT HORNS REEF 3 OFFSHORE WIND FARM "Swedish energy group Vattenfall and offshore wind turbine manufacturer MHI Vestas joined with the Crown Prince of Denmark and Danish Prime Minister last Thursday to open the country’s largest offshore wind farm, the 407 megawatt Horns Reef 3." says CleanTechnica: "Vattenfall won the right to construct Horns Reef 3 back in 2015 and the first foundation was laid in October 2017. The first electricity was delivered just over a year later and it is now delivering electricity equivalent to the needs of approximately 425,000 Danish households. Built using the world’s currently most powerful wind turbine platform — MHI Vestas’ 8.3 MW V164 model (soon to be succeeded by a number of more powerful turbines) — Horns Reef 3 is delivering electricity at one of the cheapest prices in Europe" https://cleantechnica.com/2019/08/26/vattenfall-mhi-vestas-inaugurate-407-megawatt-horns-reef-3-offshore-wind-farm/ CLAIMS DATA POINTS TO HIGH-END ELECTRIC CAR RISKS: AXA "Electric luxury cars and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) may be 40% more likely to cause accidents than their standard engine counterparts, possibly because drivers are still getting used to their quick acceleration, French insurer AXA said." and reported by Reuters: "The numbers, based on initial trends from claims data and not statistically significant, also suggest small and micro electric cars are slightly less likely to cause accidents than their combustion engine counterparts, AXA said at a crash test demonstration on Thursday. Half of electric car drivers in a survey this year by AXA had to adjust their driving to reflect the new acceleration and braking characteristics." https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-autos-insurance/claims-data-points-to-high-end-electric-car-risks-axa-idUKKCN1VC1R4 QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. Show #402. Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 1st March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to new Patreon PRODUCER it’s ANTHONY CARROLL from Seattle, and thank you CHARLES HALL for increasing your support. More on the Tesla news from Tom Randall at Bloomberg: "The top-line performance Model 3 price declined to $58,000 from $60,900. That’s $20,000 cheaper than when it was first released last year. It’s also a bit quicker, going from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds and having a top speed of 162 mph. Musk told reporters that making these final price cuts has been “excruciating,” and there will be no future price reductions to the Model 3. He declined to answer a question about the base model’s profitability. Tesla also reintroduced a lower-priced Model S sedan, which now starts at $79,000 with 270 miles of range. There’s also a long-range version starting at $83,000 with a 335-mile range, and a performance version starting at $99,000." NISSAN REVEALS U.S. PRICING FOR LEAF E-PLUS: COSTS MORE THAN MODEL 3 "Nissan has just revealed U.S. pricing for the 62-kWh version of the LEAF. Unfortunately, pricing seems a bit too high following yesterday’s $35,000 Tesla Model 3 announcement." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs: "There’s a lot to like with this new LEAF. Its 62-kWh battery provides a range of up to 226 miles. Had it not been for Tesla shocking the world last night with the Model 3 base price announcement, we’d be rather excited for the LEAF. However, all versions of the LEAF e-Plus check in at a higher price than $35,000. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) for the 2019 Nissan LEAF PLUS are: LEAF S PLUS $36,550 USD, LEAF SV PLUS $38,510 USD, LEAF SL PLUS $42,550 USD" Inside EVs Forum user Bloggin: "$35k gets you the standard Model 3, but who wants a Tesla without Autopilot?? Add the $3k and it’s $38k. Want a color other than black and now it’s $39,500. Want wheels other than black, now it’s $41k and well equipped and still below the Leaf SL at $42,550." And user Brian: "Leaf still qualifies for the full tax credit whereas Tesla only gets half. In four more months, Tesla will only get a fourth of the credit. By the time the Leaf loses the credit, Nissan will have put cash on the hood. So the e-Plus will always cost less than even a base Model 3." https://insideevs.com/nissan-u-s-pricing-leaf-e-plus/ PEUGEOT BRINGS FULLY ELECTRIC STAND TO GENEVA PEUGEOT will be showcasing its new plans for an electric future at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, unveiling the all-new 100% electric PEUGEOT e-208 alongside the all-new PEUGEOT 208 petrol and diesel variants and hybrid 508 PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED Concept. Joining the new models will be a Plug-in Hybrid range and a revamped electrified version of the iconic PEUGEOT Lion. PEUGEOT will be unveiling the all-new PEUGEOT 208 model, which will be available with a choice of petrol and diesel powertrains along with a zero emission all-electric derivative, the all-new PEUGEOT e-208. Powered by a 100 kW motor, the all-new PEUGEOT e-208 will be the first electric model available from PEUGEOT’s new electric range. The 5-door hatchback features a 50kWh battery, positioned under the floor to maintain interior space, which provides a range of up to 211 miles (WLTP) from a full charge. The all-new PEUGEOT e-208 comes with three driving modes: Eco, to optimise range, Normal, tuned for comfort, and Sport, which puts the emphasis on performance. Customers can choose from a range of charging methods for the all-new PEUGEOT e-208, including 100 kW rapid charging, capable of 80% charge in 30 minutes. http://www.peugeotpress.co.uk/releases/1726 AUDI STAND AT GENEVA WILL BE EXCLUSIVELY ELECTRICELECTRIC/HYBRID "The Audi stand at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show will be exclusively occupied by electrically powered models, including the world premiere of the Audi Q4 e-tron concept and the European presentation of the Audi e-tron GT concept." according to Robin Whitlock for Renewable Energy Magazine: "In all, a total of four all-electric cars will headline for the brand, all of which will have been rolled out in series production form by the end of 2020. In addition four new plug-in hybrid models will also make their debuts, and the world of Formula E racing will be represented by the latest Audi e-tron FE05 racing car. Deliveries of the Audi e-tron, the first member of this new quartet of electric vehicles, are set to begin soon. The series-production version of its coupé equivalent, the Audi e-tron Sportback, will be introduced later in 2019. Another electric car – the Audi Q2 L e-tron - will be presented in a few weeks in China and will reach its first customers in that market in 2019. Two further series-production debuts will then follow in 2020: the Audi e-tron GT and Audi Q4 e-tron. Concept cars on the stand in Geneva provide a look at these two future models." https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/audi-stand-at-geneva-will-be-exclusively-20190228 SEAT SHOWS VW MEB-BASED EL-BORN EV IN GENEVA "We've already seen spy photos of the production version of Volkswagen's new Golf-sized fully electric car, alternatively referred to as the I.D. or the Neo. As an intent to show that the MEB platform underpinning the Volkswagen will be utilized on other Volkswagen group cars, Seat, the Spanish carmaker, has released images of its own take on the MEB architecture." reports Autoblog: "Volkswagen will bring the I.D. electric hatchback to market first, instead of using Seat to test the waters. But the Seat is hardly a second banana, as its figures are convincing enough: the 62-kWh battery pack gives it a range of 260 miles (on the WLTP cycle), and its 204-horsepower electric powertrain takes it to 62 mph in 7.5 seconds. With 100-kW DC charging, the battery reaches 80-percent capacity in 47 minutes. The VW version's production is slated to begin in November 2019." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/01/seat-el-born-ev-vw-meb-geneva/#slide-7533531 JAGUAR I-PACE NAMED UK CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD 2019 The Jaguar I-PACE has emerged victorious at the UK Car of the Year Awards 2019, after a closely fought battle with three other manufacturers. Having been named the Best Executive car when the category winners were announced in February, the Jaguar was pitted against the 11 other triumphant new cars to fight it out for the top honour. The UK Car of the Year Awards judges were quick to praise the attributes of Jaguar’s first electric vehicle. TV presenter Jonny Smith said: “Few traditional manufacturers can match the I-PACE for ground-up groundbreaking design and tech. A wonderful combo of unique design, spirited driving behaviour and useful EV range/rapid charge capability.” WHY HONDA BOSSES WEREN'T CONVINCED ABOUT THE E PROTOTYPE "The project manager of the Honda e prototype has admitted that the development team had to overcome opposition from company management before the car was confirmed for production." says Autocar: "The retro-styled electric-powered machine, whose styling closely resembles that of the Urban EV prototype, is a compact city car with a range of around 125 miles. Kohei Hitomi said Honda management was not initially convinced by the car's styling, small size and limited range. " He said: "“The positive feedback for the Urban EV concept car was certainly a breakthrough to convince internally that a small-size EV would make sense and be appreciated. I also tried to convince people that an EV is meant to be used in urban conditions, [where] the [small] size of the car is the most important aspect. That's where it makes most sense. From that perspective, the small size is the most important aspect, so that was how we tried to convince people. The concept helped the production car to get approval, and the production car helped the concept to look like what it looked like." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/why-honda-bosses-werent-convinced-about-e-prototype KIA TO DISPLAY UPGRADED HYBRID NIRO MODELS AT GENEVA MOTOR SHOW "Kia has announced that refreshed versions of the Niro Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid will be make their public debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Both models now come with an exterior design in-line with the all-electric e-Niro, an improved interior finish and new tech features." says Jack Healy for CarKeys: "The South Korean marque has given the Niro hybrid models new front and rear bumpers, redesigned headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED rear lights and new alloy wheel options. Inside, Kia has made significant tech upgrades in the form of the optional 10.25-inch widescreen touchscreen and seven-inch instrument cluster display, which can be fitted instead of the standard eight-inch infotainment screen and 4.2-inch instrument panel. Both versions of the Niro use a 1.6-litre petrol engine that is teamed with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Hybrid pairs the combustion engine with a 1.56kWh lithium-ion battery pack, while the PHEV comes with an 8.9kWh unit." https://www.carkeys.co.uk/news/kia-to-display-upgraded-hybrid-niro-models-at-geneva-motor-show COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 25th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. AUDI E-TRON GETS CLOSER We're now just over a month away from the official launch of the Audi e-tron Crossover, the first fully electric Audi and the first of the e-tron range. Reuters report "The e-tron crossover will be revealed Aug. 30 in Brussels and will have a range of about 240 miles. Audi CEO Rupert Stadler quoted the price in Germany as 80,000 euros (about $95,000) — that's compared to 77,850 euros for the entry-model Jaguar I-Pace S AWD and 92,230 euros for the entry-level Tesla Model X 75D." Sometimes on here I get bit of kickback for being positive of ALL electric car makers, and especially when those large legacy auto makers are being forced into it by Tesla, because we know they can operate at scale when they want. And Audi in Hungary is one example, where 6,000 employees produce about 9,000 engines each day for 32 production plants of the Volkswagen Group, that's almost 2million combustion engines in 2017. If they turn their focus to EVs it would be huge news. And from the VW Press Office: "On Tuesday, series production of electric motors officially started in Győr. The company has invested a double digit million amount to set up the motor production facility. Approximately 100 people are employed in this new area at present. For the production of electric motors, Audi Hungaria installed the innovative production equipment and islands within just one year. The departments for the development of electric motors and for production planning cooperated closely with the prototype manufacturing/ production technology centre in Győr to develop the required expertise. The current production capacity is for approximately 400 electric axle motors each day and can be gradually increased. At present, about 100 people are employed in this new area, to be increased to more than 130 by the end of the year. Production is with one‑shift operation, but will soon change to three shifts." "The electric motor from Győr offers numerous new features. With the stator – one of the core components of the motor – the aim is to insert as much of the thin enamelled copper wire as possible into the casing: the tighter the winding, the more efficient the power delivery. A new winding and inserting centre at Audi Hungaria makes it possible to wind the optimal amount of enamelled copper wire particularly compactly and then insert it into the casing. The electric axle consists of other large components such as the power electronics, which are located in their own housing, the gearing and two flange shafts that transmit the power to the wheels. The employees produce two electric axle drive systems for each Audi e-tron, as both the front and rear axles are driven – in good quattro tradition." https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2018/07/Audi_Hungaria.html THREE MORE MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE REVIEWS CNET's Kyle Hyatt: "the moment you mash the accelerator a whole new sensation hits, and it's immediately apparent what you're getting for the (considerable) added price. based on these early impressions, the Performance seems to be exactly what we expected all along: an experience not dissimilar from the standard Model 3, just a heck of a lot quicker." MotorTrend: "Even with four aboard, the Model 3 DMP surged ahead so startlingly that it stopped conversation. Except maybe for an uttered "Oh my god." I braked pretty hard and arched up the on-ramp toward the freeway. It was a flourish more akin to swiping a navigation route on your phone than driving a car on the actual road. In maybe 120 wheel revolutions, a high-performance hierarchy has been rattled. The European marques perennially atop the sport sedan podium are about to have trapdoors release beneath them. Although nothing has fundamentally changed with the car's steering or suspension (besides an imperceptible but CG-lowering 5-10mm drop in ride height), the dual motor and all-wheel drive give the compact Tesla a tensed, hair-trigger potency for leaping ahead or around whatever's in the way. It's pure jungle cat." Mark Vaughn, West Coast Editor for Autoweek: "Controlling all that power on its way to the wheels is a new vehicle dynamic control (VDC) system. Tesla no longer uses Bosch VDC but has instead made its own. Tesla says this allows engineers to more precisely tune the distribution of torque front and rear as well as side-to-side. Acceleration is strong; thrilling, even. It’s still unclear whether you have to do that chemically ridiculous 30-minute pre-conditioning drill to get the 3.5-second 0-60 figure, but whatever figure I was experiencing was impressing the heck out of me." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/auto/2018-tesla-model-3-performance/preview/ https://www.motortrend.com/cars/tesla/model-3/2018/2018-tesla-model-3-dual-motor-performance-review/ http://autoweek.com/article/car-reviews/first-drive-tesla-model-3-performance HYUNDAI KONA: GREAT LONG-RANGE, ALL-AROUND EV "The long anticipated Hyundai Kona EV, with a battery capacity up to 64 kWh, is now starting to arrive in the hands of customers and testers. It appears to be everything EV fans have hoped for, and more. If you want one, get your order in ASAP!" writes Max Holland for CleanTechnica: "Hyundai is only planning for 30,000 units per year in the near term. Most of the exports are currently going to Europe, and won’t be arriving in the US till later in 2018. Pricing for the long-range, 64 kWh version varies by market, but starts from around €34,000/US$40,000 equivalent in Norway (NKR 326,000), €39,000 in Germany, £36,000 in the UK, or €42,000 in France. US pricing will emerge towards the end of 2018. Incentives in some markets will effectively reduce these prices further. In Norway, at this price, the 64 kWh Kona is a similar cost to the Bolt/Ampera-e." Clean Technica say the charge speed is 80kW, and I thought it was 100kW. Checking the official Hyundai website says: "Charge Time / Quick Charge (DC) (connected to 100 kW DC fast charger). Approx. 54 min up to 80% state of charge" CHINESE LUXURY EV STARTUP GYON LAUNCHES NEXT MONTH IN L.A. "Another new Chinese electric car brand is on the way, called Gyon. Bankrolled by Sitech, itself an electric car brand under pioneering Chinese car manufacturer FAW, Gyon will launch during the summer. " KIA KX3 EV: CRETA-BASED ELECTRIC CAR SPOTTED "Images of the Kia KX3 EV have surfaced online. The Creta-based electric vehicle (EV) is rumoured to go on sale by the end of 2018 in China." according to Team BHP.com: "The KX3 in the all-electric guise is expected to be powered by an 109 BHP electric motor with a claimed top speed of 150 km/h. It gets a 45.2 KWh lithium-ion battery, however its maximum range is not yet known." https://www.team-bhp.com/news/kia-kx3-ev-creta-based-electric-car-spotted CARBONCOUNTER.COM MIT published a useful tool for comparing life cycle emissions (gCO2/mile) and TCO of different vehicle types. The plot area shows more than 100 popular new car models in the U.S. Move over each data point to get more information (on a touch device, tap). The x axis shows the lifetime cost of each vehicle per mile driven. The y axis shows the greenhouse gas emissions of each vehicle per mile driven. We include emissions from producing the different fuels and vehicles. Our results show that you don't have to pay more for a low-carbon-emitting vehicle. While the average greenhouse gas emissions of all cars are more than 50% higher than the 2030 target, most hybrid and electric vehicles meet that target today, with today's electricity mix. Greenhouse gas emissions from electricity production in California are half the U.S. average, and it shows. Emissions from electric vehicles drop below the 2040 climate target. Using a combination of low electricity emissions, high fuel prices, and a high share of city driving, we can construct a best case scenario for electric vehicles (EVs), where EVs are cheaper than comparable combustion engine vehicles. We can also do the opposite, choosing conditions that favour combustion engine cars. Even so, electric vehicles emit less than comparable combustion engine vehicles. Disabling the federal tax refunds and low fuel prices do make EVs quite pricey compared to gasoline cars though." Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 25th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. TESLA EMPLOYEE TWEETS ABOUT PRODUCTION RATES Elon Musk tweets about Tesla's production rates, the challenges, the successes. Dave from accounts does NOT. Linda from HR does NOT. John from the Gigafactory does NOT. Except, John Totah did exactly that yesterday. John Totah is the Lead Material Flow for Model 3 at Gigafactory 1 and a Twitter account using his name, so we're assuming it is really him, make some bold claims before they were swiftly deleted. John said: "Our original goal was 2,500/wk and we didn't hit it. Now we just hit 5,000/wk throughput in June. Insanely hard work by @Tesla team." If you didn't know that’s exactly the kind of language and tweet we would get from Elon. You know, the CEO. One of a handful of people on the planet who can comment publicly on Tesla. And not just because they're being precious but because the Q2 production and deliveries, whether batteries or completed cars, is potentially the most important announcement in the history of the company. This is the last week of the quarter. On the bright side that's a doubling in two months so understandably he's proud. He even had time to send a follow up, before he found the delete button: "We want to sustain over 5k/wk since current capacity of the lines are built for a max 6k/wk. It was incredibly difficult to hit 2500 in March. We revised many processes and built new systems that worked better. Incredible work and brain power." As you may have heard before on the podcast, when I was talking about the production lines heading from Tesla Grohmann Engineering in Germany to Nevada, to fix one of the four zones, that was when Elon replied directly to me to confirm it. Super exciting, so we knew they had a shutdown to speed up Gigafactory. And once JB Straubel was tasked with sorting out Zone 4 at Giga, and it would amazing new if true before batteries were a bottleneck at one point. He wasn't clear on his tweet whether the throughput was specifically about his area of responsibility, or overall Model 3 production rates at Giga. And remember none of this means Freemont is on target for 5,000 Model 3's week. The twitter account has now been protected. The news was reported on Reddit, Electrek etc, so I feel it can be reported on. ANOTHER TESLA INTERIOR UPDATE InternetDude: "So I finally got my 2018 Tesla Model S P100D. I ordered it with cream interior but it was supposed to have figured ash dark wood. Tesla made a production change just about 10 days after I ordered and changed almost all of the aluminium accents to dark graphite colour instead. They also changed to the wood to a natural oak decor finish, more like the Model 3." MAD MAX MODE FOR AUTOPILOT LANE CHANGE Elon has tweeted a picture of the centre display with the car running in 'development mode'. Within Feature Settings you can now enable Mad Max mode in the 'Blind Spot Threshold'. He also joked: "We considered going beyond Mad Max to “LA Freeway” level, but that’s too loco". It follows his retweeting of an old post from 2017 from a twitter user which photoshopped a Tesla Semi into a Mad Max type future. The current options you can see in Dev Mode are Standard, Aggressive and Mad Max. He also talked about how a self-driving car is programmed to yield in the event of a conflict: "It’s a tough call. Reality is that it will be pretty easy to bully a self-driving car, as it will always yield. Will prob have a manual override that requires continuous press for hardcore lane changes." Surely this will be part of Version 9 software coming this Autumn with self-driving features. So whereas currently you initiate a lane change with the blinker, it's your call to ensure the road is clear, this is a hint towards more autonomy. The other options you can see now are “Follow Nav,” “Blinker to Fork,” “Enable ULC,” and “Vision Stops." CAR MAGAZINE - MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV REVIEW: A STRONG CASE FOR HYBRIDS CAR Magazine UK: "we headed out to Provence, France, for a spin to see how the changes stack up. This engine revision plus work on the battery – which gets 10% more power output and total capacity of 13.8kWh thanks to new cells and better management - has allowed Mitsubishi to recalculate maximum electric range, fuel economy and CO2 emissions for new-age, more realistic WLTP testing, and the results are more impressive for that reason. We’re talking 30 miles on electric power, 141mpg and 46g/km. You’re also able to drive faster on electric power – now 84 rather than 78mph. ts PHEV tech is so effective, in fact, that it’s set to be rolled out to larger Renault and Nissan models in the coming years as that new alliance comes to fruition. In return, pure EV bits from the Leaf will go the other way and be used on smaller Mitsubishis." https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/mitsubishi/outlander-phev/ FIRST 350KW CHARGER OPENS IN GERMANY Fastned are a charging network here in Europe with 73 stations in and they just posted a Twitter video of their first station opening in Germany. That's the first of 18 in Germany this year but goal is in the hundreds. They say it's in the A3 at Limburg an der Lahn and if you have a car which can take advantage of slightly faster speeds like a Hyundai IONIQ or Jaguar I-PACE you'll be pleased to hear they're 350 kW DC chargers. The charging station is covered in solar panels too, and all of the energy they source is renewable. Bart Lubbers is the co-founder of Fastned and said: "In the next few years, German car manufacturers such as Porsche, Audi, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes will introduce fully electric models that can charge at high power. This is a great challenge and opportunity for the automotive industry and charging companies like Fastned.” We heard recently Fastned also have plans for the UK and Belgium. ITALY AIMS TO PASS NORWAY AS EUROPE'S NO. 1 EV MARKET Bloomberg broke the news yesterday: "The populist government in Italy, Europe’s most sluggish market for electric cars, has a big-bang plan to put 1 million of the vehicles on the nation’s roads. Getting anywhere near that target could cost the state $10 billion in incentives." com: "Italy’s new populist government has a plan to put 1 million electric vehicles on the nation's roads by 2022 in an effort to go from being the region's weakest EV market to replacing Norway as its strongest. Italians last year bought just some 2,600 full-electric cars, out of a total of about 2 million vehicles sold, and the number rises only to around 4,800 if plug-in hybrid models are included, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Fewer than 5,000 full-electric models are estimated to be on the country's roads today. And that's the problem, critics say. To go from being an EV backwater to Europe's biggest market, the Italian government would need to roll out incentives at least at the level of Norway's, which could cost several billion euros, analysts say. Even that might not be enough." JAGUAR LAND ROVER'S £13.5BN INVESTMENT Times Of India report: "Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover has lined up investment worth 13.5 billion pounds in the next three years on new models, technology development and capacity addition. The investments will be on new models, technology, capacity with significant amount of it on electrification and on a new platform" JLR said: "Our roll out to MLA will be fully complete by 2025, at which point every product can cater for an ICE (internal combustion engine), BEV (battery electric vehicle) or PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) derivative." NEW PEUGEOT 308 PHEV COMING IN GTI FORM French motoring site Caradisiac says the next gen Peugeot 308, which you'll be able to buy in 2020, will rely on electric power for GT and GTi status. The GT model most likely to couple up a gas engine with electric motor both driving 220 hp to the front wheels. Whilst the GTi will add an electric motor to the rear axle for AWD and 300hp.
