Gain Traction
Right To Repair With Roy Littlefield IV, VP of Government Affairs for the Tire Industry Association

Gain Traction

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2025 23:57

Roy Littlefield IV is the Vice President of Government Affairs for the Tire Industry Association. In his role, Roy leads advocacy efforts across state and federal levels to support independent tire and auto repair shops. With deep roots in the industry — his father also served in TIA leadership — Roy has been involved in policy from a young age. He now champions initiatives like the Right to Repair Act, helping protect consumer choice and shop independence nationwide. In this episode… The modern vehicle repair landscape is becoming more exclusive, locking out independent repair shops and consumers from essential data. As cloud-based systems and EV technology evolve, traditional tools like OBD2 ports are being phased out, creating barriers to access. How can the industry and lawmakers ensure fair repair rights for everyone? According to Roy Littlefield IV of the Tire Industry Association, the key lies in mobilizing grassroots support and pushing for bipartisan legislation. Roy explains how right to repair laws, such as those in Maine and Massachusetts, are being held up in court despite overwhelming public support. He also reveals the strategic moves being made to pass a federal Repair Act that would secure nationwide access to vehicle repair data. On this episode of Gain Traction, Mike Edge welcomes Roy for a conversation about the right to repair movement, legislative hurdles, and how independent shop owners can take action. Roy shares insights on consumer rights, industry trends, and the importance of grassroots advocacy. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn:  [02:10] Why Right to Repair is the most urgent issue facing the auto industry [03:25] How EVs and new tech give OEMs the upper hand in the repair market [05:08] The challenge of cloud-based systems replacing traditional OBD2 ports [10:44] Roy Littlefield IV and Mike Edge share personal stories of inflated dealership repair estimates [11:33] How VIP Tire and Auto led a Right to Repair victory in Maine [12:45] Why automakers claim they "can't comply" with basic consumer access laws [15:44] How bipartisan support is building for national legislation [16:25] Grassroots advocacy and how shop owners can make an impact Resources mentioned in this episode: Roy Littlefield IV on LinkedIn Tire Industry Association Report a Right to Repair Issue Brian Bates on LinkedIn EAS Tire and Auto Mike Edge on LinkedIn Tread Partners Quotable Moments:  “Right to repair is the biggest issue right now facing the industry, and it's going to hit us like an avalanche.” “Consumers should have the right to decide who works on their vehicle — and own that information.” “Even something as simple as an oil change is becoming a problem because of data lockouts.” “Despite 80% of voters supporting it, one lawsuit can hold up progress for years.” “Every person matters — whether you're an intern or a CEO, everyone deserves respect and recognition.” Action Steps:  Report blocked repair access: Submit your issue via the TIA advocacy page so it can be used in legal and legislative efforts. Contact your lawmakers: Speak to your local, state, and federal representatives about how Right to Repair affects your business. Educate consumers: Let customers know they have a choice — and a right — to get their vehicle serviced outside the dealership. Display QR codes in your shop: Use TIA's printable posters with QR codes to make it easy for your team to report issues. Support the federal Repair Act: Encourage your trade networks to back bipartisan legislation ensuring nationwide repair access. Sponsor for this episode... 00:00 - Better Than New BONUS SEGMENT: Why You Need a Cheap OBD2 Scan ToolAnd the subject of today's Bonus segment is… an OBDII scan tool. Or more specifically, my pitch to you that you should have at least an inexpensive one so you can quickly check trouble codes and stay on top of your car or truck's operating condition. 00:45 - What is OBD2?OBD2 or On Board Diagnostic Two is a diagnostic system built into every passenger vehicle sold in the US since model year 1996 that allows a mechanic (or you) to interface with sensors in your vehicle that monitor the working condition of the components in the Powertrain, Chassis and Body of the vehicle 01:10 - What Is An OBD2 Scanner? It is a palm or tablet-size electronic device used to read OBD2 engine and drive train trouble codes. It works by plugging into the DLC or “Diagnostic Link Connector”, which is a universal 16-pin connector found typically under the dash on the driver's side of your vehicle. 01:30 - What Can An OBD II Scanner Do For You? When a Check Engine Light or other warning light illuminates on your dash, you can use an OBD2 scanner to check for trouble codes to get an idea of what's wrong with your vehicle. Codes for will start with a P, C, B or U, followed by a series of numbers. Codes that start with a “P” are for the powertrain (engine, transmission, ignition, emissions and fuel system)Codes that start with a “B” are for body components (airbags, seat belts)Codes with a “C” are for chassis components (brakes – ABS, brake fluid, etc.Codes that start with “U” (which means undefined) covers anything that doesn't fit in the other 3 code categories. After the Letters P,C,B or U will be a series of numbers that indicate the specific issue. Sometimes a check engine light indicates a major issue and at other times a code indicates a problem that needs to be fixed, but doesn't require immediate attention. Once you know the exact code(or codes), you can search online to find out what that code corresponds to so you can determine if you can fix it yourself or not. If you can make the repair yourself, then use the scan tool after you complete the repair to erase the trouble code(s) before driving your vehicle. If the code comes back again, that's an indication there may be something else wrong. 03:00 - Two Examples of How An OBDII Scanner Can Save You Time And Money Toyota Highlander - O2 Sensor CodeMy 2009 Toyota Highlander had a O2 sensor code (P0151)Using an OBD2 scanner, I was able to determine which sensor was defective Based on that info, I bought a new O2 sensor and replaced the faulty one myselfDoing the repair myself cost less than $100 dollars. A repair shop would have charged between $350 and $400 Audi Wagon - Engine Misfire Code Recent while running an errand, my Audi wagon developed an engine vibration. I assumed it was a coil, a spark plug or a fuel issueWhen I returned home, I used my inexpensive scanner to check for engine codesThere was one code (P0303) which is a cylinder 3 misfire. Typically that code indicates a bad spark plug or coil, so I bought both locally I replaced the spark plug and coil myself in less than an hourThe car started and ran fine and I deleted the code using the scannerThe local German repair shop wanted to charge at least an hour for labor ($180 + 10% tax), plus parts, which were going to be about $65, with a total of about $265. Total cost for parts to do this repair myself was about $30, plus my...

On-board diagnostics (OBD) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia On-board diagnostics (OBD) is an automotive term referring to a vehicle's self-diagnostic and reporting capability. OBD systems give the vehicle owner or repair technician access to the status of the various vehicle sub-systems. The amount of diagnostic information available via OBD has varied widely since its introduction in the early 1980s versions of on-board vehicle computers. Early versions of OBD would simply illuminate a malfunction indicator light or "idiot light" if a problem was detected but would not provide any information as to the nature of the problem. Modern OBD implementations use a standardized digital communications port to provide real-time data in addition to a standardized series of diagnostic trouble codes, or DTCs, which allow a person to rapidly identify and remedy malfunctions within the vehicle. Gears and Beers: The Unashamedly Unprofessional Automotive Podcast

We are back! Happy 2021! We're sorry this episode is later than we had hoped, Corona decided to do an Empire and it striked back and buggered our plans to get back into your ear-holes last week. Anyways, we're back now. We had to re-record this week as GarageBand decided to F us and corrupt our first attempt at this episode, but we persevered. Matt then kicks off the news with a Finnish tyre company wanting to sell 'Lifelong tyres', and the new Ford Ranger has been spied in camo and it looks "very F150-y" and it'll be a shared platform with the next Volkswagen Amarok. Joseph then talks about Toyota's new GR010 LMP1 race-car, and Nissan pretty much gearing up to release the 400Z which will, allegedly, look exactly like the 400Z Prototype. Mitch then talks about Ken Block and Ford getting a divorce and seeing other people; ie, they've parted ways. Ken might potentially go back to Subaru. Then Mitch talks about the new Singer ACS Safari/Rally 911; a two-off commission by a rich bloke. Joseph then talks about BMW shitting the bed with the new M2 CS promotional video, which features the audio-track of an Audi V10 super-imposed over the video... Basically, BMW is having an identity crisis at the moment. Joseph then talks about GM's crap new logo that is just pure crap. Mitch then goes on a rant about how he got banned from commenting on Ozzy Tyres' Facebook page, then Joseph and Mitch then talk about getting OBD2 readers for their cars, and we talk about Mitch's new Android head unit and GME UHF. Then Joseph talks about his OS Giken 1.5 LSD Diff that's being installed very soon, and Joel talks about his recent issues with his 300ZX. I'd like to get some facts from you about what are harmful temperatures of the oil in automatic transmissions. I drive a 2.8l Prado with auto transmission & occasionally tow a camper trailer weighing 1.6 tonnes. Connected to the OBD2 port in the Prado is a ScanGauge2 that allows me to see the readings from many of the sensors on the car. I've been particularly interested in the readout of the transmission temperature. "Some time ago you published a video that recommended using auto setting to tow & not to use the transmission as a "manual". Normally when towing I'd set the transmission into the 1:1 ratio 4th gear & tow in that mode. After watching your video, on the next camping trip to western Qld I put the Prado into Drive to see what, if any, difference it made. It did drive a little differently & shifted gears a lot more as it moved between the 5th & 6th overdrive gears to 4th gear or lower depending on the terrain. The transmission temperature in this auto mode was regularly in the range of high 90 to over 100 deg C with the ambient temperature in the mid to high 20's. "Next I went back to my default towing mode with the transmission set to 4th as the highest gear ratio used. There were less gear changes (no surprises there) but the transmission temperatures were definitely lower, mostly in the 80's & occasionally into the low 90's. Ambient temperatures were the same as before. The downside was that the fuel consumption was slightly higher. At a service after that trip I got my mechanic to change the transmission oil as on inspection it appeared much darker than normal. I'm not sure whether this was a result of the way it was driven on this trip or not. "My understanding is that the optimum temperature for longevity of an auto transmission is somewhere in the 80 deg range & anything higher was likely to cause long term damage if the oil wasn't changed regularly (the Prado service schedule is for an oil change each 40,000 kms or 2 yrs). Can you give me some guidance on whether this is correct or not & what regularly running at the types of temperatures seen in auto mode are damaging. There must be many Prados (and other makes) out there that are used for towing & driven in a set & forget fashion that could be just waiting for an expensive appointment with a service centre. "I'd appreciate your comments on this subject." Many thanks Barry

In the traditional IT industry, about 80% of the vulnerabilities and the attacks that we have seen are socially engineered. Anybody can inject the malware into your vehicle and take control of your vehicle theoretically. There are several possibilities whenever you want to access the vehicle. One is physical access to the vehicle through the OBD2 port and number two is remote access. The holy grail of car hacking is to get to the CAN bus of the vehicle which is the actual network of the car where you control everything. In this video, Our CEO Dr. Hasan Ibne Akram, and the Matrickz team are going to show a setting that we will have remote access to the vehicle, and then we will inject the malware that is allowing you to communicate with the vehicle and in our case, we have simulated the malware using the Raspberry Pi, connected to the OBD2 port so that you can access the CAN bus. https://www.matrickz.de JOIN AUTOMOTIVE CYBERSECURITY TRAINING: https://lnkd.in/debNaRe Visit our CEO pages: https://lnkd.in/enezJpa https://lnkd.in/dYW9nu9 https://lnkd.in/dcug-Fa Take a peek at our activities: https://lnkd.in/dME_Y3C https://lnkd.in/dPrATbH https://lnkd.in/dTWug5T https://lnkd.in/dbD__bU Hear our Podcast: https://lnkd.in/dEZAdQD https://lnkd.in/ds5uGJd https://lnkd.in/d-95gFX #CarHacking #CarHack #CarSecurity #ECUHacking #CANbus #CarHacker #AutomotiveSecurity #AutomotiveSafety #AutomotiveCyberSecurity #ISO21434 #AutomotiveIndustry #ISO26262 #AutonomousVehicle #Hacker #CyberSecurity #hacking #hack #CANHack #FunctionalSafety #CarCyberSecurity #Hacked #RaspberryPi #OBD #OBD2Port

Show #734   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 31st March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   CLEANER AIR IN CHINA, ITALY, UNITED STATES OBSERVED "The Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak has seen widespread disruption of manufacturing operations as well as trade and sporting events worldwide, however it appears there is a silver lining of sorts in the wake of significantly reduced movement; satellite data appears to show reduced nitrogen dioxide emissions across the United States, China and Italy." says PaulTan.org: "California became the first state in the United States to issue a shelter-in-place order effective from March 19, while many cities have made their decision to shut down earlier, according to Gizmodo. Los Angeles marked a clear reduction in pollution owing the the city’s car culture, the website noted, meanwhile in the northeast region, New York City also marked a significant reduction. In Europe, Italy has also seen air quality improvements, also with a reduction in nitrogen dioxide emissions over the span of a month, from February 8 to March 7.   https://paultan.org/2020/03/31/cleaner-air-in-china-italy-united-states-observed-potential-impact-of-electric-vehicles-shown-report/   ENVISION SOLAR DELIVERS FOUR EV ARC™ EV CHARGING STATIONS Charlotte, N.C. purchased four of the Company’s EV ARC™ solar-powered EV charging stations for public and city use. Each off-grid unit includes an emergency power panel and can be relocated for city events or in case of emergency power needs. EV ARC™ DC fast charging systems provide up to 1,100 miles per day. The EV ARC™ system’s solar electrical generation is enhanced by EnvisionTrak™ (patented) which causes the solar array to follow the sun, generating up to 25 percent more electricity than a fixed array. The energy is stored in the EV ARC™ product’s on-board energy storage for charging day or night, and to provide EV charging and emergency power during grid failure. The EV ARC™ product is a permanent solution that provides Level I, Level II and DC Fast Charging, but because it requires no trenching, foundations or installation work of any kind, is deployed in minutes and can be moved to a new location with ease.   https://finance.yahoo.com/news/envision-solar-delivers-four-ev-120010277.html   ASAHI TANKER ORDERS WORLD'S FIRST ZERO-EMISSION ELECTRIC PROPULSION BUNKER TANKERS "Japanese marine transportation company Asahi Tanker Co. Ltd. on Friday (27 March) said it has decided to build two of the world’s first zero-emission electric propulsion bunker tankers." according to Manifold Times: "Asahi states the tankers will utilise the “e5 tanker” design by e5 Laboratories Inc and construction is expected to be completed in March 2022 for the first tanker and March 2023 for the second. The vessels are pure battery tankers powered by large-capacity lithium-ion batteries, and are anticipated to enter Tokyo Bay as marine fuel supply vessels. Both vessels are designed to completely run on batteries to achieve zero emissions from carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulfur oxide (SOx), and soot to reduce impact on the health of the crew onboard and the environment."   https://www.manifoldtimes.com/news/asahi-tanker-orders-worlds-first-zero-emission-electric-propulsion-bunker-tankers/   AS VOLVO GOES ELECTRIC, HERE’S HOW IT’S MAKING ITS BATTERIES TOP-NOTCH Ulrik Persson, who leads traction-battery development at Volvo: "Up until now, we have bought complete battery systems. Starting with the BEV, it's a whole different ballgame," Persson told us. "Of course, it's possible to outsource that as well, working very closely with the supplier, but from our side we felt it was a strategic decision to take ownership of this new component. It's definitely the most expensive component in the vehicle, and as it's integral to the crash structure of the vehicle it really makes sense.""   Ars Technica says: "That means there's no shared components or cells between the 10.4kWh pack in a Volvo PHEV and the 78kWh pack that will power the XC40 Recharge (as well as the Polestar 2). For European and US XC40s, those packs will use LG Chem pouch cells, but China-bound BEVs will contain prismatic cells courtesy of CATL. The rapid pace of development applies equally to software—just witness how many more miles Tesla can eke out of a kilowatt-hour today compared to a few years ago. Persson confirmed that Volvo will use the same approach of collecting real-world data and using it to roll out improvements via over-the-air updates. Well before that stage, his team engages in extensive testing of battery tech at the factory, using Volvo's new $60 million in-house battery testing lab."   https://arstechnica.com/cars/2020/03/as-volvo-goes-electric-heres-how-its-making-its-batteries-top-notch/   FASTNED 2019 RESULTS REVEAL HIGH GROWTH OF CHARGING BUSINESS "Fastned, the Dutch fast-charging network, closed the year 2019 with total revenues of around €6.4 million, out of which €4.5 million was related directly to charging (up 175%)." reports InsideEVs: "Over the 12 months of 2019, the company delivered nearly 8 GWh of electricity (up 175%) to over 42,800 active customers (up 139%). The growth looks amazing, although the ongoing expansion is also reflected in €12 million of total net losses (92% higher than in 2018). The network consists of 114 stations (as of the end of 2019), installed mostly in the Netherlands (98) and Germany (15) plus a single station in the UK. The average revenue per single station is currently at nearly €40,000 per year, by delivering some 70 MWh of electricity."   https://insideevs.com/news/407042/fastned-2019-results-high-growth/   BUFFETT-BACKED BYD TO SUPPLY ELECTRIC-CAR PARTS TO RIVALS "BYD Co., the Chinese electric-vehicle maker backed by Warren Buffett, will start offering a full suite of EV components to rivals and aspiring auto manufacturers to diversify its revenue sources amid sputtering car demand." writes Bloomberg today: "Among the parts that the Shenzhen-based company makes and now sells are electric-car batteries, powertrains and lights, founder Wang Chuanfu said in an online press conference on Sunday. BYD, China’s biggest maker of vehicles powered by alternative energy for the past six years, will use the brand name FinDreams for the parts business. Last year, BYD signed an agreement with Toyota Motor Corp. on EV battery supply and joint product development, with the companies setting up an jointly owned venture this month. BYD also cooperates with Daimler AG on making Denza brand electric vehicles."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-29/buffett-backed-byd-to-supply-electric-car-parts-to-rivals   TROPOS MOTORS BEGINS PRODUCTION IN EUROPE "The European branch of Californian electric vehicle manufacturer Tropos Motors has started manufacturing electric commercial vehicles in Germany with Mosolf Group in the city of Herne." according to electrive: "In future, up to 3,000 compact commercial vehicles in the L7E-CU category are to be produced here annually. The light transporters feature a small turning circle, adaptable body options and easy charging at domestic sockets.  The vehicles named Able are 3.70 metres long and 1.40 metres wide. The net payload important for transporters is 565 kilograms. A useful detail for use in city centres or narrow factory premises is that the Able has a turning circle of less than four meters. The Tropos Able ST is the standard model with an AGM battery for a range of 80 kilometres and a top speed of 40 km/h. The Able XR is equipped with a lithium-ion battery that lasts for 105 to 260 kilometres, depending on the model. The XR has a top speed of 85 km/h."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/03/31/tropos-motors-begins-production-in-europe/   TESLA MODEL Y POWER READING SHOWS MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE CAN GET EVEN QUICKER "Tesla Model Y Performance is higher than that of the Model 3 Performance, according to measurements of power output from the vehicle’s dual electric motors." according to Teslarati: "Brooks Weisblat of the DragTimes YouTube channel measured each vehicle’s power output through a Bluetooth-enabled OBD2 interceptor dongle and the “scan me Tesla” app. Weisblat’s measurements of both motors on each vehicle reveal that both the Front and Rear motors on the Model Y have a higher energy output than that of the Model 3, despite them being the same. The front motor of the Model Y has a higher output by 18 kW, while the rear motor of the Model Y is producing 15.5 kW more."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-electric-motors-power-output/   THIS CHICAGOAN IS ON A MISSION TO HELP AUTO DEALERS SELL ELECTRIC VEHICLES "When Chicagoan Neda Deylami decided she wanted to buy an electric vehicle, she shopped around at Nissan and Chevy dealerships hoping to get help from salespeople in making her decision. But the experience was frustrating. She felt she knew more than the salespeople about the Nissan Leaf" according to energynews.us: "She more recently traded her Leaf in and bought a Tesla, a totally different experience. As much as she likes her Tesla, she said she feels strongly that to promote the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, other dealers need to become knowledgeable and supportive of them. Show #691   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 8th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   GM TEASES MODULAR EV PLATFORM "General Motors has unveiled an updated electric vehicle roadmap. Originally shown in 2017, the latest roadmap is largely unchanged except for the addition of an electric pickup truck. That shouldn’t be too surprising as GMC recently announced the HUMMER EV will be introduced on May 20th and go on sale in the fall of 2021." reports CarScoops: "GM confirmed the first vehicle to ride on their all-new electric vehicle platform will be a crossover from Cadillac. As we exclusively reported last month, it will use the same architecture that underpins the Cruise Origin.  GM teased their modular electric vehicle platform. The company didn’t say much about it, but noted it allows for larger footprints and a lower height. It will also feature an all-new battery system which has a higher energy density and a “high-power” DC fast charging capability. While a lot remains unknown, we can expect upcoming electric vehicles to have a range of at least 300 miles (483 km). GM CEO Mary Barra has previously described that distance as the “sweet spot” and noted the 2020 Bolt isn’t too far from it as the model can travel 259 miles (417 km) on a single charge."   https://www.carscoops.com/2020/02/gm-teases-modular-ev-platform-says-most-future-cadillacs-will-be-electric-and-have-real-names/   TESLA'S WILD WEEK "Tesla’s (TSLA) wild stock ride began Monday with a whopping 20% increase to $780 per share. That was followed by a 17% price spike Tuesday, sending prices near the $1000 dollar mark. Year-to-date that’s a 170% increase in Tesla’s share price, and a quadrupling since its low of $178 in June 2019." says Forbes: "Even after a 17% correction Wednesday the company is still up 71% on the year – sitting at $755 per share as of this writing. Tesla has now overtaken Volkswagen, General Motors, Daimler, and Ford, only trailing Toyota in total market capitalization. About half of the nation’s EVs are located in California, where a state mandate for zero emission vehicles is helping to drive demand.  EV adoption is driving investment in battery technology, which leads to increased battery performance and reduced costs. Average market prices for battery packs have plunged from $1,100/kWh in 2010 to $156/kWh in 2019, an 87% fall in real terms according to Bloomberg."   https://www.forbes.com/   ZOE WITH 345,000KM ON CLOCK STILL HAS NEAR PERFECT BATTERY "An all-electric Renault Zoe with an impressive 345,000 kilometres on the clock has caught our attention this week – not due to the distance it has been driven, but because of the apparently near perfect state of its battery." according to The Driven.io: "But in an interesting video shared by the “official” Renault Zoe owners club on Twitter on Monday, a Turkish Youtuber Erdem Çizmecioğulları has shown that one Zoe electric hatchback has been 345,000km and its battery is still going strong. Using an OBD2 device which allows access to the battery data via a smartphone app, the 2017 Renault Zoe shows the 96% state of health, and an 82.1% usable state of charge giving 41kWh usable capacity from the vehicle’s original 52kWh."   eRally Motorsport: "We've been thrashing the hell out of our eRally Zoe and it's still 100% Soh, according to CLIP after it's BMS update."   https://thedriven.io/2020/02/07/zoe-with-345000km-on-clock-still-has-near-perfect-battery-or-does-it/   https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=6&v=0Dcj5foFdyQ   VOLVO XC40 RECHARGE PLUG-IN HYBRID T5 2020 REVIEW "The XC40 Recharge Plug-in Hybrid T5, to give it its full name, completes the Swedish firm’s goal of offering a plug-in version of every model in its line-up. It’s also the first Volvo to use the new Recharge branding" writes James Attwood for Autocar: "While Volvo’s other plug-in models, built on the SPA architecture, feature an electric motor that drives the rear wheels, the XC40 twins the three-cylinder 1.5-litre engine with a front-mounted electric motor, powering the front wheels only. Both motors are driven through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. unlike some plug-ins, the XC40 has the same boot capacity as the regular version. But the moment the XC40 accelerates from standstill on a soothing push of electric power, there’s no doubt that a hybrid powertrain propels the car. The reason the boot is unaffected is because the whole powertrain is located under the bonnet. The three-cylinder engine produces 178bhp, with the electric motor adding 80bhp. The electric unit draws power from a 10.7kWh lithium ion battery, which is located in the central drivetrain tunnel of the car, and allows for a claimed 31 miles of electric-only running."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/volvo/xc40/first-drives/volvo-xc40-recharge-plug-hybrid-t5-2020-review   EXPERTS UNCOVER DEEP FLAWS IN EFFICIENCY TESTS FOR PLUG-IN HYBRID VEHICLES "Studies have shown hybrid cars, which run on plug-in electric batteries and a combustion engine, could produce three times more carbon dioxide than thought and use up to three times more fuel. Studies by the UK's Emissions Analytics and a 2018 academic study in Norway, among others, have shown that tests performed on the plug-in hybrid vehicles failed to take into account driving habits." repotrs The National.ae: "They found drivers were far more likely to neglect to charge their cars than was accounted for in laboratory testing. This, combined with the fact that the cars have a range of up to only 40 kilometres when properly charged, meant drivers were often failing to use the battery at all. In effect, many vehicles were emitting more gas and using more fuel than they would have with a normal combustion engine, because of the extra weight of a battery. Nick Molden, chief executive and founder of Emissions Analytics, told The National the problem was not of companies misleading the public, but that they were legally required to carry out their tests in laboratory settings."   PaulTan.org said: "A study conducted by The Miles Consultancy, a fuel management firm, found that vehicles produced by BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, and Volkswagen often returned fuel consumption figures that are up to three times higher than advertised. In fact, 187 regularly-charged BMW PHEVs were audited, and the average fuel economy is only 42 mpg (6.7 litres per 100 km) versus the claimed figure of 137 mpg (2.1 litres per 100 km). Experts such as Paul Hollick, the managing director of The Miles Consultancy, questioned whether some plug-in hybrid cars ever get to see a charging cable. “In a lot of cases, we see PHEVs never being charged, doing longer drives and this is not a good fit for a lot of car users,” he said.e of the UK’s most popular electrified cars is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, but Emissions Analytics boss Nick Molden said “the problem is the official figures are very sensitive to assumptions about how PHEVs are being charged and driven.”"   https://www.thenational.ae/world/europe/experts-uncover-deep-flaws-in-efficiency-tests-for-plug-in-hybrid-vehicles-1.975192   https://paultan.org/2020/02/07/phevs-consume-3-times-more-fuel-in-the-real-world/   U.S. HOUSE DEMOCRATS PROPOSE ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING NETWORK "Two U.S. lawmakers on Thursday unveiled legislation that would create a nationwide electric vehicle (EV) charging network to promote the shift from gasoline-powered vehicles and reduce greenhouse gas emissions." reports Reuters: "Democratic Representatives Andy Levin and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez released legislation dubbed the "EV Freedom Act" to create a network of high-speed charging stations within five years along the public roads of the national highway system in the United States at a U.S. Capitol press conference.  The 18-page bill reviewed by Reuters notes a lack of charging stations poses a significant barrier to higher electric vehicle sales. Levin said creating a new fleet of charging stations nationwide will be expensive but will create good paying jobs. A separate bill introduced this week by Representative Yvette Clark and others would focus on increasing access to EV charging stations in low-income and disadvantaged communities. Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg would require all new cars by 2035 be electric and would build a highway charging network with the goal of a station every 50 miles (80 km)."   https://finance.yahoo.com/news/u-house-democrats-want-create-141229757.html   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   On a scale on 1-10, (1 being not at all, 10 being completely) how much does/did environment come into your love of EVs?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 231 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Brent Picasso has been racing since 2009 and has since created a company that provides the RaceCapture and Podium real time telemetry and data capture/display systems.  We cover the development history and capabilities of the system, as well as his racing history.  With what originally began as a self-tweeting race car, they have been able to develop one of the best and most complete systems we have seen to date. Podium is capable of being used with virtually all data collecting systems and converts the data into many potential formats to aid in understanding and analyzing.  RaceCapture is a separate  system that comes in three levels suitable for once in a blue moon track day participants to full time professional racing teams. His initial racing history began at Thunderhill with what was originally intended to be a Peugeot entry but eventually led to turbo Miata and 1,000 penalty laps and the race to zero laps began.  The initial wheel to wheel racing action set the hook and he hasn’t looked back since.  Since then, in addition to the Peugeot, his conquests included a turbo 3-cylinder Mercur XR4Ti, a Crown Vic, and a second gen V6 MR2. (Bill really wants a piece of that MR2 since he had one in college)  1)  The development history of both RaceCapture and Podium and how each can be used together or with other data capture systems like AIM, MoTeC etc.  2)  The use and capabilities of the various systems and how they interact 3)  Data collection capabilities as well as how the data can be followed, used, and displayed, both in real time at the track, remotely, or within the racing car itself. 4)  There are three levels of the RaceCapture system, what they are used for and how they differ 5)  Podium app capabilities, use, and several upcoming features and capabilities 6)  Ability to look at data in real time or as a review, especially with racing coaches and friends. 7)  These systems appear to lower the barrier to look at and use any data you are collecting currently or in the future 8)  Driver data comparison techniques and use 9)  Some of the key improvements of this environment is the lower barrier to using and understanding and improving as a result of the data 10)  The interface is also able to be used as a real time, in car dashboard and/or dashboard replacement 11)  It is also able to be used not only in the car, but also in the garage/paddock at the track, and even remotely, all in real time on a wide variety of hardware including computers, laptops, iPads, phones, etc. 12)  What is predictive lap time, how it is calculated and potentially used on the track 13)  How the system works with driver changes etc., so common in endurance racing 14)  Pit use vs in car use vs post-race review usage and options 15)  Options and thoughts for use with multiple cars/multi car teams 16)  We try to overview the installation process and requirements, as well as how they vary depending on the car being used, its OBD2 capabilities etc. 17)  Options and thoughts regarding additional sensor use for things like brake pad temperature or tire temperatures 18)  What is Canbus and how it can be used with the system to increase the capabilities and data that can be collected and monitored in real time, like differential temperature etc. 19)  Shift X3 capabilities and usage to form alarms and warning systems for the driver of potential car issues such as engine rpm shift lights, oil and water pressure and temperatures etc.  20)  Advanced customization options are also available for those interested through Lua programming capabilities built into the system 21)  Options and use within dedicated race cars, as well as occasional track/daily driver cars 22)  In car dashboard replacement options with using the system 23)  We are very excited with several of the upcoming additions to the systems and steps to continuously improve the ease (of use and data “digestion”) and capabilities of the systems and how they integrate with each other and external data sources like video etc., as well as several advanced pit-to-car communication capabilities All of this can be used for track days, HPDE events, and racing events at all types of venues and tracks, including impromptu tracks and non-traditional racing areas common with Autocross events etc.    We are placing our order for several of these systems next week and will likely have our review in an upcoming episode(s) as we progress.  Best regards, Bill, Vicki, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team   Several links mentioned within the podcast: Autosports Lab/RaceCapture:  https://www.autosportlabs.com/ Podium App:  https://podium.live/software Aim Sportline:  https://www.aim-sportline.com/index.htm MoTeC:  https://www.motec.com.au/products-currentrange/product-directory/
