Mercedes-Benz yesterday announced a new logistics concept: a demonstrator that combines eSprinter vans with e-cargo bikes to sustainably solve the last-mile riddle. The Sustaineer (sustainability pioneer) tech demonstrator promises a look at delivery transport of the future. So, what does that look like? The electric van is based on the automaker's eSprinter. Mercedes already has fully electric versions of every commercial and private van, and the company expects them to make up more than half of total sales by 2030.

THERE WASN'T A SINGLE TESLA AD DURING THE SUPER BOWL. HERE'S WHY - CNN - If you were to judge the US auto market by this year's Super Bowl ads, you'd think virtually all the cars for sale in America today are electric vehicles made by the world's long-established automakers. And you never would have heard of Tesla, the world's largest EV maker. - Commercials during the game reportedly cost $7 million for 30 seconds, and automakers bought a total of nearly 10 minutes of those time slots, not counting pre- and postgame ads. Those commercial minutes were almost all about EVs. - But now, Tesla is facing more competition than ever for buyers looking to go electric. Established automakers and other upstarts have dozens of new EV models in their pipelines, some of which are already for sale. So some experts think Tesla may have to change its no-ads policy eventually. - The car industry has incredibly deep pockets for ad spending and spends more on advertisements than any other product group. - Automakers invested $4 billion in television ads in the first nine months of 2021, according to Kantar. - Auto dealers spent another $625 million in that same period of 2021. - Many of the cars advertised during the Super Bowl are not yet available to US buyers — and won't be for months or even years. Original Source : https://edition.cnn.com/2022/02/14/business/super-bowl-ev-ads/index.html EV-MAKER POLESTAR'S AD RIBBING MUSK MOST POPULAR AT SUPER BOWL | REUTERS - Leonardo DiCaprio-backed Polestar's ad taking a potshot at rivals Tesla (TSLA.O) and Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) topped the list of the most popular commercials during Super Bowl LVI, new data on Monday showed. - The 30-second ad by the electric-car maker performed roughly 23 times better than other commercials aired during the game, according to consumer search data firm EDO, with its message of "no epic voiceovers," "no empty promises," and "no hidden agendas" aiming squarely at the idea of conquering Mars as well as the Volkswagen Dieselgate. - Five of the top 20 Super Bowl commercials that were the most searched online during and after the event were EV-focused and were made by Polestar, Kia, Nissan, Chevrolet and BMW, EDO said, highlighting the rising popularity of battery-powered vehicles in the U.S. market. Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/world/us/ev-maker-polestars-ad-ribbing-musk-most-popular-super-bowl-2022-02-14/ US TO INVEST ALMOST $3 BILLION IN BATTERY SUPPLY CHAIN - ELECTRIVE.COM - The US Department of Energy has announced funding of 2.91 billion dollars to develop a national battery supply chain – including for electric vehicles. This makes another e-mobility funding from the infrastructure bill concrete. - to support production facilities for battery materials, battery cells and packs, recycling facilities, and second-life applications for batteries - the government of US President Joe Biden wants to ensure “that the United States can produce batteries and the materials they contain to increase economic competitiveness, energy independence and national security”. Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/02/14/us-to-invest-almost-e3-billion-in-battery-supply-chain/ AMPRIUS SHIPS FIRST BATCH OF "WORLD'S HIGHEST DENSITY" BATTERIES | NEWATLAS.COM - Californian company Amprius has shipped the first batch of what it claims are the most energy-dense lithium batteries available today. These silicon anode cells hold 73 percent more energy than Tesla's Model 3 cells by weight, and they take up 37 percent less volume. - Tesla's current Model 3 cells serve as a state-of-the-art comparison, and hold around 260 Wh/kg and 730 Wh/l, according to Enpower. The new Amprius cells are a significant step up, both in specific energy and energy density, holding 450 Wh/kg and 1,150 Wh/l – and the company says that the undisclosed number of cells just delivered to "an industry leader of a new generation of High-Altitude Pseudo Satellites" - The company says the silicon nanowires are rooted right into the substrate of the anode, so conductivity (and thus power) is high. It says the cell cycle life is "excellent" and "continually improving," although it doesn't put any numbers on it, and it also says the anode is the only part of the battery that changes; the rest can be produced using existing manufacturing methods and components. BMW I3 PRICES LOWERED TO QUALIFY FOR THE GOVERNMENT GRANT BMW UK has reduced prices for the BMW i3 and BMW i3s in response to the recent overhaul of Government’s Plug-in Car Grant (PiCG). Prices now starts from £33,805 OTR for the BMW i3 and £34,805 OTR for the sporty BMW i3s before the grant. The government offers consumers grants of up to £2,500 for electric vehicles on cars priced under £35,000, down from the previous maximum of £3,000 for cars under £50,000. The all-electric BMW i3 has a range of 182-190 miles (WLTP) (173-150 miles WLTP for the BMW i3s). TESLA SEMI PRODUCTION LINE AT NEW NEVADA BUILDING "Tesla is building a new Tesla Semi production line at a new building near its Gigafactory Nevada plant, and it plans to produce five electric trucks per week, according to sources familiar with the matter." says electrek: "Now, we can confirm that the building, which sits at 550 Milan Drive (pictured above) next to another building used as a warehouse by Tesla, is housing a new production line for Tesla Semi currently being deployed by the automaker. Reliable sources familiar with the matter told Electrek that Tesla is currently building a low-volume Tesla Semi production line in the building. Once completed, they expect a production capacity of five Tesla Semi electric trucks per week. The plan is still for volume production to happen at Gigafactory Austin once Tesla can also ramp up battery cell production there." https://electrek.co/2021/03/30/tesla-semi-production-line-new-nevada-building-electric-trucks-per-week/ MUSK SAYS CELL SUPPLY SHORTAGE MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO SCALE TESLA SEMI PRODUCTION Elon Musk said in a tweet on Tuesday the near-term cell supply shortage makes it difficult to scale the production of Tesla Semi commercial truck. MERCEDES-BENZ AMG'S FIRST DEDICATED EV ARRIVES IN 2021 "Mercedes-Benz AMG's first dedicated electric vehicle will arrive this year, the company announced late on Tuesday during a presentation of its electrification strategy for the coming years. The vehicle is expected to be a variant of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan (shown above), but it won't be a heavy hitter like AMG's 63 series. Rather, it will sit in AMG's first rung of performance like the current batch of 35- and 53-series cars." says Motor Authority: "AMG has confirmed that its full lineup will eventually be made of EVs, though only when the technology is ready, which could be more than a decade still." https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1127705_mercedes-benz-amg-s-first-dedicated-ev-arrives-in-2021 ESPRINTER TO BE BUILT AT THREE PLANTS Management and employee representatives at Mercedes-Benz have struck an agreement to build the next generation eSprinter van, which is based on the newly developed Electric Versatility Platform, at three locations: North Charleston, South Carolina, Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde in Germany. Based on a new platform announced at the end of 2020, the next generation of the eSprinter targets new customer segments and markets, including the USA and Canada. Mercedes-Benz is investing around €350 million in the next generation eSprinter. The necessary conversion measures in plants and retraining is currently in preparation. MERCEDES EQS HAS A 141CM CURVED SCREEN COVERING 3 DISPLAYS "Mercedes-Benz has unveiled new interior shots of the upcoming EQS. There’s definitely a lot going on here, including a modern, refined interior with a lot more displays and a lot less physical buttons. The headline to the show is the the massive piece of glass in the dash. This curves in three-dimensions and overlays 3 displays. The UI is known as the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) and this new triplescreen interface is known as the Hyperscreen." reports Tech.au: "The optional extra consists of 3 separate displays that span over 141 centimetres wide. The driver display is 12.3″, the largest central display is 17.7″ and the front passenger display is 12.3″. While Merc would love for you to think of this as one seemless display, the reality is, it isn’t. The back row passengers don’t get ignored either with a display of their own, connected to the back of the front seat" https://techau.com.au/mercedes-eqs-has-a-141cm-curved-screen-covering-3-displays-0-menu-levels/1 EQS TO FEATURE BIOMETRIC TECH "Car Throttle reports that the vehicle will use facial recognition technology to recognize both the driver and passengers, and tailor various settings to the riders based on past preferences." says Mobile ID World: "The auto industry is quickly becoming a major commercial adopter of biometric technologies, with computer vision and facial recognition being among the most popular. It has yet to be officially revealed whether the EQS will also feature Mercedes’ MBUX (Merced-Benz User Experience) platform, which brings with it a slew of voice-based interactions, and allows for further user customization. Mercedes did recently announce the renewal of its partnership with artificial intelligence expert Cerence — whose speech recognition technology is behind MBUX — so the inclusion of that platform and its speech recognition capabilities certainly seems possible." https://mobileidworld.com/new-mercedes-eqs-feature-biometric-tech-that-can-recognize-driver-passengers-032906/ EV BATTERY STARTUP POACHES OIL VETERANS TO BUILD ARCTIC FACTORY "A Norwegian battery maker is giving executives from the oil, gas and aluminum industries a new lease of life, tapping their experience to gain an edge in the race to electrify cars." says JWN ENergy: "Freyr AS plans to start a pilot plant near the Arctic Circle in Norway by next year after hiring a handful of executives accustomed to running big, complicated and costly projects. Freyr will invest between $2 billion to $2.5 billion until the middle of the decade. That’s down from an estimate of $4.5 billion as recently as two years ago because of decisions on the technology to use. Its first commercial factory is scheduled to start production in the first half of 2023." https://www.jwnenergy.com/article/2021/3/24/ev-battery-startup-poaches-oil-veterans-to-build-a/ WHY ELECTRIC VEHICLE SUBSIDIES ARE A BAD IDEA "right now they are very expensive. But that does not mean their purchase should be subsidised. It just means that we should wait for the cheaper vehicles. All a subsidy will do is provide a windfall gain for those who were going to purchase an electric vehicle anyway and encourage others to make an expensive purchase. This will contribute nothing to meeting the 2050 target, because by 2050 nearly all those expensive cars will have long since been scrapped" writes The Spinoff: "he EV uptake rate would be higher in New Zealand than in Europe and Japan by 2040 without a New Zealand subsidy, rather undercutting the argument that providing a subsidy now is somehow necessary for the long term development of the EV market." https://thespinoff.co.nz/money/31-03-2021/why-electric-vehicle-subsidies-are-a-bad-idea/ NEW VIRGINIA LAW TO REQUIRE SALE OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has signed a bill that will require car manufacturers to sell a certain percentage of electric or hybrid vehicles. The goal is to reduce air pollution. Transportation is the leading source of greenhouse gas pollution in Virginia, and this measure will help to cut down on that." https://www.nbc12.com/2021/03/31/new-virginia-law-require-sale-electric-vehicles-order-reduce-pollution/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What incentive would make the most difference to you buying an EV? HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 SEEN AHEAD OF DEBUT "Hyundai’s recently launched IONIQ sub-brand is about to unveil its first production model. It’ll take the form of an all-electric hatchback with a design inspired by the Concept 45. " says Motor1.com, meet the IONIQ5: "we expect the production Ioniq 5 to take after the Concept 45 with its square-shaped LED headlights and somewhat boxy overall appearance. he Ioniq 5 will ride on Hyundai’s dedicated EV platform called Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). Not much is known about the powertrain’s capabilities at this point but we know for a fact Hyundai’s new architecture will support the so-called vehicle-to-load (V2L) function where the EV can supply electric energy to outside sources. The company says the system should be able to supply up to 3.5 kW of power and provide enough energy for a midsize AC and a 55-inch TV to work for 24 hours." https://uk.motor1.com/news/459883/hyundai-ioniq-5-spied-teased/ VW ID.6 ON TARGET FOR 2023 "After the ID.3 and ID.4, one of the next additions to the ID range of electric cars is expected to be the ID.6 which will reportedly be available as both a sedan and a wagon. " says InsideEVs: " This model will apparently debut in the fourth quarter of 2023, and even though it will mostly be aimed at China where sedans are still a status symbol, there is a high likelihood that it will be sold elsewhere too. What’s especially cool about the ID.6 is that even though it will occupy roughly the same footprint on the road as a Passat, it will actually offer the interior room of a vehicle from a class above. This is a trick that VW is pulling off very well with the ID.3 and ID.4 already and we can only imagine how much space they will manage to offer in a larger vehicle. The ID.6 will be underpinned by the same MEB platform, come with a single-motor, rear-wheel drive base setup or more powerful dual-motor variants (including a possible performance-minded GTX variant) and it is said to have a range of as much as 700 km or 431 miles on a single charge (with its largest available battery pack)." https://insideevs.com/news/459533/volkswagen-id6-sedan-wagon-here-q4-2023/ MERCEDES-BENZ VANS ANNOUNCES NEXT-GENERATION ESPRINTER Mercedes-Benz Vans is accelerating down its road to full electrification and will make all of its model ranges available with a battery-electric drivetrain with a focus on reliability, quality and optimized total cost of ownership (TCO). To create even greater added value for customers in the future, Mercedes-Benz Vans developed the new Electric Versatility Platform for the large van segment. This innovative e-drive platform will be the technical basis for the next-generation eSprinter. The core elements of the new platform are three modules that enable the greatest possible flexibility in the development and design of different body types. This allows for new eSprinter body configurations previously only available with combustion engines. Following the eVito and eSprinter, Mercedes-Benz Vans will ultimately cover the battery-electric range in all commercial transporter segments with the future eCitan. https://media.daimler.com/marsMediaSite/en/instance/ko.xhtml?oid=48383169 EV VERSION OF MG3 COMING 2021 MG is going to launch a third EV for the UK, following the MG ZS EV and the MG5 Estate. The MG3 EV will be an all electric supermini at the bottom end of the range. It's due for launch in Q4 2021 and be based on the same size as the MG3 piston car. The MG ZS EV has a 44.5kWh battery which might be too big for this car so perhaps MG will ship with smaller. But if they can squeeze it in, it would have a larger battery than a MINI or Honda E. A range of 150 miles would be sufficient for that class of car. The key is price and if they can bring it in low enough to encourage more people to drive electric. BRITISHVOLT CHOOSES SITE FOR GIGAFACTORY Britishvolt has selected Blyth, Northumberland as the site of its first battery Gigafactory. By the final phase of the project in 2027 it will be employing up to 3000 highly skilled people, producing over 300,000 lithium-ion batteries for the UK automotive industry. It will further provide up to 5000 jobs in the wider supply chain. Britishvolt's Gigafactory is widely regarded as being strategically important for the UK automotive industry in order for it to maintain competitive advantage as we accelerate towards an increasingly electrified future. Quarter four of 2023 has been targeted as the start of production in Britain's first gigaplant. CHARLOTTE CHOSEN AS LOCATION FOR ARRIVAL HEADQUARTERS IN US "Arrival, the UK based electric bus and truck startup, has chosen Charlotte, North Carolina as the site for its US headquarters. The company said in a press release this week it will add 150 employees and invest $3 million to establish its corporate outpost in America." says CleanTechnica: "Arrival has developed a standardized battery electric platform is says can accommodate a wide range of vehicles. It also plans to build its products in local minifactories located close to its customers. The first of its US minifactories will be located in Rock Hill, South Carolina, which is only about 30 miles south of Charlotte. Arrival has been selected by UPS to build 10,000 delivery vans in the UK and left the door open for an additional 10,000 in the future. The company has attracted investments from Hyundai and KIA, two companies who are also providing financial support to Canoo, a West Coast EV startup that has also developed its own highly scalable EV platform". https://cleantechnica.com/2020/12/10/charlotte-chosen-as-location-for-arrival-headquarters-in-us/ VOLVO CARS TO PRODUCE ELECTRIC MOTORS IN SWEDEN Volvo Cars will assemble electric motors at its powertrain plant in Skövde, Sweden, and plans to establish complete in-house e-motor production by mid-decade. It will invest 700 million SEK (€68.2 million) to this end in coming years. Volvo Cars announced earlier this year that it is investing significantly in the in-house design and development of e-motors for the next generation of Volvo cars. With the planned investments in Skövde, it now takes the first steps towards in-house e-motor assembly and manufacturing. PEGATRON REVEALS LARGE INCREASE IN TESLA MODEL 3 PARTS ORDERS "Another sign Tesla is planning for a big year in 2021 is a recent report that a parts supplier has seen a big increase in orders from the automaker." reportd Drive Tesla Candada: "Pegatron manufactures the central control system for the Model 3. According to sources who spoke with DIGITIMES, the electronics manufacturing company has an usually large increase in orders for those parts. While it is unclear when or where these parts will be used, there is a good chance many of them will go to Giga Shanghai. Tesla is targeting to produce 550,000 vehicles in 2021 at Giga Shanghai alone, with more than half of those being the Model 3." https://driveteslacanada.ca/model-3/pegatron-reveals-large-increase-in-tesla-model-3-parts-orders/ ARTEMIS GOES INDEPENDENT "Audi’s Artemis task force for highly automated electric cars has now been spun off into an independent company. Alexander Hitzinger, managing director of the new Artemis GmbH, made the announcement on LinkedIn." according to electrive: "Audi, under new CEO Markus Duesmann, had established the Artemis project at the end of May. The task force was to develop a “groundbreaking” model “quickly and without bureaucracy.” The highly efficient electric car is to hit the road as early as 2024." https://www.electrive.com/2020/12/10/artemis-goes-independent/ BOLLINGER UPDATE THEIR DESIGNS "The reveal of the production-spec Rivian R1T and R1S, as well as the unwrapping of the Tesla Cybertruck, might have pushed Michigan-based Bollinger's B1 and B2 electric SUV and pickup out of the limelight. Nevertheless, the company's still tinkering away at its boxy models, and Bollinger's latest images give us a better clue as to what the saleable B1 and B2 will ultimately look like." says MotorTrend: "The B1 and B2 benefit from a taller belt line, which helps lower the models' visual mass for a less top-heavy look. The updated design nets more passenger headroom and a bigger frunk. The entire greenhouse is taller, too, while the B2 now features a bed that's no longer integrated with the cab" https://www.motortrend.com/news/bollinger-b1-b2-ev-truck-suv-production-design/ OCTOPUS ENERGY'S ELECTRIC JUICE NETWORK HAILED AS 'BEST EV INNOVATION' "Octopus Energy has been awarded the 'Best EV innovation' award at the Driving Electric awards for its simplified EV charging system, the Electric Juice Network." says EV Research": Electric Juice Network users can benefit from a single card that is usable at any participating charger and from the costs of the charge sent directly to their home energy bill, making it faster and easier to get around. The service is open to all drivers of electric cars so that everyone can benefit from this new and more convenient way of charging - whether or not they are already one of Octopus Energy's 1.8 million customers." https://www.electricvehiclesresearch.com/articles/22581/octopus-energys-electric-juice-network-hailed-as-best-ev-innovation You can listen to all 946 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Show #878 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 28th August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA, THE FBI AND $1M HACK ATTACK "Earlier this week, the FBI arrested a 27-year-old Russian citizen for attempting to carry out a ransomware attack against a US company. It turns out that company was Tesla" says Autoblog: "Egor Igorevich Kriuchkov traveled to the U.S. and contacted a Russian speaking, non-U.S. citizen who was working at the Tesla Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada. After meeting with that individual, Kriuchkov allegedly proposed a deal. He would pay the employee $1 million to deliver malware to computer systems at the Gigafactory. Kriuchkov and his associates allegedly planned to extract data from the network and threaten to make it public if Tesla didn’t pay a ransom." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/08/29/tesla-fbi-ransomware-attack-nevada-gigafactory/ LUCID TEASES POSSIBLE WORLD RECORD 1/4-MILE WITH AIR DREAM EDITION "Lucid has released a teaser for its first sedan, the Air, indicating that it may have set a new electric vehicle world record before its highly-anticipated unveiling event on September 9th." according to Joey at Teslarati: "The video did not reveal any specific time, but the quickly ticking timer that appears in the teaser goes as low as 10.48 seconds, but it is doubtful that this time is the lowest that the vehicle achieved. Lucid used the same style of video for the Air’s range unveiling, and that video only went as high as 441 miles. Lucid revealed the Air had 517 miles of range just four days later. The current world record for a quarter-mile for an electric sedan is held by the Tesla Model S, which completed a drag race in just 10.452 seconds at the Tulsa Raceway Park on May 17th, 2020. The Model S used Ludicrous Mode and the “Cheetah Stance” to record this time." The unveiling date is 9th of the 9th. So, 9.9 seconds? https://www.teslarati.com/lucid-teases-quarter-mile-world-record/ LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT IS SELLING ITS FLEET OF BMW I3 VEHICLES "Thereafter, BMW won a bid with LAPD to supply one hundred BMW i3s each year for three years starting in 2016. Fitted to the i3s were the base 22kWh battery pack, the Deka World interior package, and the standard 19" aluminum wheels." reports InsideEVs: "CBS Los Angeles reported some i3s that accumulated just several hundred miles making the whole proposition look more ineffective. If LAPD had around a dozen of these vehicles, the story probably would never have been brought to light, but LAPD had 200, $45,000 electric cars sitting in a parking garage collecting dust. New Century BMW, the dealer that handled the leases initially, is currently selling them as CPO models. some are priced around $15,000, unbeatable for an under warranty, lightly-driven electric car. The only issue that one may see is that some of these i3s were sitting, presumably for prolonged periods." https://insideevs.com/news/441238/los-angeles-police-fleet-bmw-i3-being-sold/ AMAZON ORDERS OVER 1,800 ELECTRIC VANS FROM MERCEDES "Amazon orders more than 1,800 electric transporters from Mercedes-Benz Vans. The order includes around 600 eVito and more than 1,200 eSprinter delivery vans, with Amazon expecting deliveries to begin this year. This is the largest order for electric vehicles from Mercedes transporter unit to date." according to electrive: "The internet retailer is reportedly expecting 10,000 electric delivery vans to come through Rivian, a US start-up, by 2022. The total order is for no less than 100,000 electric delivery vehicles by 2030. In Europe, Amazon has relied on established manufacturers such as Mercedes. In Munich, they use 40 StreetScooters and ten Mercedes eVito. Amazon recently added 340 charging stations and operates more than 150 electric delivery vehicles every day at its distribution centre in Essen together with a Mercedes partner." https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/28/amazon-orders-over-1800-electric-vans-from-mercedes-benz/ RIMAC AUTOMOBILI WELCOMES NICO ROSBERG "Rimac Automobili has welcomed 2016 Formula One World Champion Nico Rosberg to the family, as he joined the team in Croatia to customise his personal C_Two and test an advanced prototype. Nico’s announcement was captured in a video on his YouTube channel. Nico is one of just 150 people worldwide that will own a C_Two, having ordered his car in early 2019, following a viewing with the founder and CEO, Mate Rimac. Just recently, Nico visited the team – now numbering more than 700 – in Sveta Nedelja, Croatia, to decide on the bespoke configuration of his car, which will be delivered along with other customer cars in 2021." 4 liquid-cooled permanent magnet synchronous electric motors placed at each wheel. 400 miles range. 258 mph top speed. 0-60 mph 1.85 secs with a one foot rolout. https://electriccarsreport.com/2020/08/rimac-automobili-welcomes-nico-rosberg-to-the-family-of-owners THE FIRST 700 VW ID.3 ELECTRIC CARS LAND IN NORWAY "Volkswagen has confirmed that the first 700 VW ID.3 electric cars have landed in Norway as deliveries of the important new electric vehicle are about to start. It has been in production since November of last year and they have manufactured thousands of them while they completed the vehicle’s software. The result is that they plan to start deliveries with a pretty large inventory in the coming weeks." writes electrek: "Jürgen Stackmann, VW’s head of marketing, confirmed that today by sharing footage of the first 700 VW ID.3 electric cars landing in Norway, which is expected to be an important market for the electric car:" https://electrek.co/2020/08/28/vw-id-3-electric-cars-land-norway/ PANAMA CANCELS ORDER FOR DIESEL BUSES, WILL PURCHASE 195 ELECTRIC BUSES INSTEAD "MiBus has decided to cancel an order for 160 new diesel buses and purchase electric buses from BYD instead. In total, MiBus will spend $35 million to purchase 195 medium size electric buses for use in Panama City." ays CleanTechnica: "In a telephone interview with the Panama Star, Luis Campaña, manager of MiBus, explained that the year long triual period demonstrated the value of regenerative braking and that the buses air conditioning systems were capable of managing the hot, humid environment of Panama. he MiBus representative clarified that his company originally thought of “presenting a proposal for the purchase of 35 medium or 10 meter electric buses, plus 160 diesel buses to partially replace the existing fleet,” but came to believe “it would be better to expand the framework and acquire 195 electric buses .”" https://cleantechnica.com/2020/08/29/panama-cancels-order-for-diesel-buses-will-purchase-195-electric-buses-instead/ WIND AND SOLAR ARE 30-50% CHEAPER THAN THOUGHT "Electricity generated from wind and solar is 30-50% cheaper than previously thought, according to newly published UK government figures. The new estimates of the “levelised cost” of electricity, published this week by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), show that renewables are much cheaper than expected in the previous iteration of the report, published in 2016." reports Simon Evans writing for CarbonBrief: "The new report is the government’s first public admission of the dramatic reductions in renewable costs in recent years. In 2013, the UK government estimated that an offshore windfarm opening in 2025 would generate electricity for £140/MWh. By 2016, this was revised down by 24%, to £107/MWh. The latest estimate puts the cost at just £57/MWh, another 47% reduction. The new estimates include similarly dramatic reductions for onshore wind and solar, with levelised costs in 2025 now thought to be some 50% lower than expected." BEIS now expects offshore wind to become cheaper than onshore by the mid-2030s. This is primarily due to much larger turbine sizes, reaching 20 megawatts (MW) by 2040, up from 9MW today. https://www.carbonbrief.org/wind-and-solar-are-30-50-cheaper-than-thought-admits-uk-government You can listen to all 877 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Daimler deliberately took a new approach as it developed its new generation of electric vans. Long before the market launch of the eVito and the eSprinter, Daimler conducted direct talks to find out and analyse customers’ wishes and expectations.

BMW INEXT, I4 AND IX3 BMW wants you to know it’s getting serious about electric vehicles. After all, it’s not every day an automaker sends out its own “spy” photos attached to a press release divulging various details." Says Christopher Smith for Motor1.com US Edition: "Getting a bit more specific, the photo above (and the gallery below) features the almost-primetime-ready BMW iX3 SUV as well as the i4 four-door and iNext crossover. Of these, the iX3 garners our immediate attention because it’s confirmed as entering production next year. That means we’ll likely see the compact SUV revealed later this year, showing us its solid kidney grille and fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology and boasting a range of over 249 miles. BMW also says it can access 150-kilowatt charging stations, which supports the rumours we’ve heard that it can be fully recharged in just a half hour. "Why did we go to Sweden for testing? For several weeks the development team subjected the fully-electric van to a true endurance test. At temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius with icy roads and deep snow, the eSprinter proved its operability under extreme conditions." "The eSprinter is equipped with an integrated fast-charging function with which it can recharge around 80 % of its energy in 30 minutes – this is a great advantage in the daily routine of a van which must function reliably whatever the temperature. #eMobility" "The eSprinter was subjected to its final winter endurance tests before it follows the eVito onto the market in the second half of 2019. Initially, it will be available as a panel van with a high roof and a permissible gross vehicle weight of 3,5t. Maximum load volume is 10.5m³." https://twitter.com/Daimler/status/1110451579784757248 TESLA, ELON MUSK WIN DISMISSAL OF LAWSUIT OVER MODEL 3 PRODUCTION "A federal judge in San Francisco dismissed for the second time a securities fraud lawsuit brought by Tesla Inc shareholders alleging that the company made misleading comments about the production status of its Model 3." Writes Alexandria Sage for Reuters: "U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer sided with Tesla, granting the electric vehicle company dismissal of the lawsuit brought in October 2017. It said shareholders bought “artificially inflated” shares because Musk and other executives misled them with bullish statements about the production ramp of the Model 3, failing to disclose that the company was “woefully unprepared” for the vehicle’s production." Says InsideEVs.com: "Germany and Norway are the top two markets by volume, followed by the Netherlands, France and Switzerland. There is a high correlation between countries with the highest number of registrations and highest number of orders. February, as the first month of volume deliveries, was just a preview of what is happening as the numbers for Norway alone are already similar to all of Europe the past month, with a few days to go still." https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-registrations-february-2019/ Tom Randall on Bloomberg today said: "Tesla has made a big splash in Europe, but it's still only selling the two most expensive versions of the Model 3. The average selling price is a whopping $72k, according to data from the Netherlands, which is the only country that reports sale prices in real time." Despite a $72k selling price, the Model 3 is on track to outsell the next two best-selling EVs combined this quarter (VW Golf, Nissan Leaf), according to public data from Netherlands+Norway+Spain. And the Model 3 only arrived mid-February https://eu-evs.com/ Tesla has yet to introduce the long-range rear-wheel drive, standard range, and right-hand-drive versions. In the U.S., the standard range is now by far the most popular, according to data from the Bloomberg tracker. A big question is cannibalization of the pricier Model S and Model X. Europeans prefer smaller cars, and so far the substitution has been significant. That could strain the program and take a bigger hit to margins when the cheaper models arrive. Several people are pointing out that Q1 is typically a slow quarter for Model S & X. Even so, they're seriously underperforming previous Q1s in Norway and Netherlands. There are plenty of things that could explain it, but it's a fair comparison. According to the Tesla owner, the company’s new charging solution was able to charge his vehicle from 9% to 90% in just 35 minutes." Reports Simon at Teslarati: "Supercharger V3 immediately showed a charge rate of 255 kW as soon as the Model 3 was plugged in. This rate stayed on for around 15% before the charge rate started to normalize at around 177 kW. 9% – 50% = 12 minutes 9% – 60% = 15 minutes 9% – 70% = 19 minutes 9% – 80% = 25 minutes 9% – 90% = 35 minutes" https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-supercharger-v3-insights/ SURVEY: DOUBLE PLUG-IN GRANT TO SHIFT COMPANY FLEETS INTO GREENER GEAR "Fleet managers could shift their buying power to support electric vehicles (EVs) in their droves if government hiked the amount of cash on offer under its Plug-In Grant scheme, according to the results of a new YouGov survey seen by BusinessGreen." According to Madeleine Green today: "The survey, which was commissioned by environmental law firm ClientEarth and questioned 368 UK-based fleet managers, found almost three-quarters would be more likely to invest in zero emission electric vehicles if government grants doubled from £3,500 to £7,000 per car. Encouraging companies with large commercial fleets, such as delivery or logistics firms, is seen as a swift way to eliminate a chunk of airborne pollutants from city centres." https://www.businessgreen.com/bg/news/3073116/survey-double-plug-in-grant-to-shift-company-fleets-into-greener-gear 'COAL IS ON THE WAY OUT': STUDY FINDS FOSSIL FUEL NOW PRICIER THAN SOLAR OR WIND "Around three-quarters of US coal production is now more expensive than solar and wind energy in providing electricity to American households, according to a new study." Report UK Guardian today. Mike O’Boyle, the co-author of the report for Energy Innovation, a renewables analysis firm: "Even without major policy shift we will continue to see coal retire pretty rapidly. Our analysis shows that we can move a lot faster to replace coal with wind and solar. The fact that so much coal could be retired right now shows we are off the pace. We’ve seen we are at the ‘coal crossover’ point in many parts of the country but this is actually more widespread than previously thought,” O’Boyle said. “There is a huge potential for wind and solar to replace coal, while saving people money.” COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. I wish. And Partner of the Podcast Sascha Pallenberg was tweeting this morning about the Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche and something he said about a potential partnership with Tesla. Now it may have been in German but Sascha kindly translated: "Our CEO Dieter Zetsche just confirmed during the annual #Daimler pressconference that #Tesla is interested in our #MercedesBenz eSprinter for their service fleet. Ongoing talks..." @sascha_p So we're talking about the eSprinter here. Jerome Guillen, Tesla’s President of Automotive, is also former Daimler. On the Tesla earnings call Elon Musk said his focus was ono improving service including Tesla Ranger Service. Most recently I've seen pics of them using Model S's, but this would be a proper electric van. This sounds like a supply deal for Tesla to use Mercedes-Benz vans rather than some sort of collaboration project. The eSprinter has a 55kWh hour pack and 93 miles (150km) of range which might not be enough. Let me remind of you an Elon Musk tweet from 19th November 2018: "Lot on our plate, so it’s either get van gliders (no battery, powertrain or compute tech) from Daimler & produce sooner or do all & produce later. Not a big difference to total vehicles produced either way. Priority list is Model Y, solar roof tiles, pickup, semi, Roadster." And: "Maybe interesting to work with Daimler/Mercedes on an electric Sprinter. That’s a great van. We will inquire." TESLA MODEL 3 GETS ANOTHER PRICE REDUCTION "Not long ago, Tesla reduced its prices by $2,000 in an attempt to assist buyers after the U.S. federal tax credit entered its initial sunset phase" reports InsideEVs, and now: "When the Model 3 Mid Range first arrived, it was priced at $46,000. The price dropped recently to $44,000, and now it’s down to $42,900. Tesla is moving closer and closer to that $35,000 price point, and the base model has yet to arrive. As for the rest of the Model 3 lineup, the Long Range Dual Motor is priced at $49,900 and the Performance model now comes in at $60,900. In reply to a question on the above Twitter thread, Musk said Tesla is doing everything it can to get to the $35,000 base Model 3. Elon Musk tweeted that the car starts at “~$35k (after ~$8k of credits & fuel savings).”" https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-price-reduction/ 2019 VW PASSAT FACELIFT DEBUTS IN EUROPE WITH PLENTY OF TECH "After Volkswagen gave China an all-new Passat last year and the United States a not-so-new Passat last month, it’s now Europe’s turn to meet the refreshed midsize sedan. The plug-in hybrid Passat GTE (pictured below, on the left) has been updated as well and can now do up to 34 miles (55 kilometers) in pure electric mode per the more realistic WLTP cycle" reports Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "For the sake of comparison, the pre-facelift Passat GTE only did 31 miles (50 km) using the now defunct NEDC procedure." https://www.motor1.com/news/304079/2019-vw-passat-europe-reveal/ NEW BMW 7 SERIES PLUG-IN HYBRID LAUNCHES IN SPRING AT £76,815 "BMW has revealed the new plug-in hybrid versions of its 7 Series saloon, which will go on sale in the UK this spring. The luxury limo will be available in a choice of long- and short-wheelbase guises, with prices starting at £76,815." according to James Fossdyke for the UK version of Motor1.com: "That money will buy you the standard-wheelbase 745e xDrive, which combines a 3-litre six-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to create a 389 bhp powertrain capable of 0-62 mph in 5.2 seconds and a 155-mph top speed. Thanks to a larger battery than found in the old 7 Series hybrid, the new model offers an all-electric range of between 34 and 36 miles despite the new, more stringent economy test. The car also uses the eight-speed automatic gearbox as a generator, taking the energy otherwise wasted during deceleration to recharge the battery and further exploiting its zero-emission potential. In Hybrid mode, the car will do 68 mph on electric power alone, with the petrol engine taking over above that speed, but in Electric mode, that top speed is stretched to 87 mph." Here's the interesting thing about performance - 0-62mph for the fastest version is 5.1 seconds, the Tesla Model S is 3.1 unless you spec Ludicrous mode. https://uk.motor1.com/news/303916/bmw-7-series-plug-in-hybrid/ BMW iNEXT IN PRODUCTION SPEC MAKES AN UNDERCOVER APPEARANCE IN SWEDEN "Last fall, BMW showed off its iNEXT electric crossover concept packed full of fanciful design and high-tech features. The company promised it for 2021, and we figured we wouldn't see much of it for a while. But instead, BMW just released images of the production model undergoing cold weather testing in Sweden." reports Autoblog.com: "The front fascia is more upright and blunt, and the hood is flatter, resulting in a sharper transition between the two. BMW still isn't saying much about the production iNEXT's feature set except that it will be fully electric and feature all-wheel drive." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/02/05/bmw-inext-production-test-model-photos/#slide-7513711 LAGONDA ‘ALL-TERRAIN’ ELECTRIC CONCEPT SET FOR GENEVA DEBUT "Since the Lagonda brand’s revival in 2011 we’ve seen only a hint of what the British luxury firm is capable of...last year’s Vision Concept revealed at the Geneva motor show." says evo: "At this year’s show we’ll see another, much clearer indication of Lagonda’s intentions, with the All-Terrain Concept – a car that will eventually go into production. while a solitary teaser image shows that the All-Terrain takes several design cues from last year’s Vision Concept, it clearly cuts a taller and more imposing form than the low-slung, one-box Vision. We learned last year that Lagonda’s first two all-electric production vehicles will share a platform with the Aston Martin DBX (itself an SUV), with an electric motor per wheel allowing for full torque-vectoring, and no doubt some impressive on-paper performance figures." https://www.evo.co.uk/news/22235/lagonda-all-terrain-electric-concept-set-for-geneva-debut PORSCHE EXPANDS CHARGING SERVICE IN EUROPE TO 49,000 CHARGING POINTS "Porsche is expanding its Porsche Charging Service – launched in May 2018 – to five new countries, which will enable access to more than 49,000 charging points under single contract, through Porsche ID card or smartphone app." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com "“In Germany, the fee for using the Porsche Charging Service is €2.50 per month. The costs for actual charging come on top of this: these depend on the provider as well as the amount of power charged. The prices are shown in detail and also according to power class/charging speed if wished. The app can be used on all mobile devices with iOS or Android operating system. The service is generally available to all drivers of hybrid or electric vehicles. It is not limited to Porsche sports cars. Registration is possible via www.porsche.com/connect-store.”" https://insideevs.com/porsche-charging-europe-49000-points/ LYFT ADDS ELECTRIC VEHICLES, 'GREEN MODE' TO RIDE-HAILING APP "Your chances of riding in an electric vehicle just went up: Lyft users will soon be able to request a zero-emission or hybrid vehicle directly from the home screen of the app." according to Sasha Lekach for Mashable: "Using the new setting, passengers can request an electric vehicle through the app and get matched with a battery-powered (or hybrid) car for their ride. Lyft says the new feature will be rolled out to other cities after the Seattle pilot." https://mashable.com/article/lyft-electric-vehicles-green-mode/?europe=true#8OIiWF8YeGqq DHL EXPANDS GREEN FLEET WITH 63 WORKHORSE ELECTRIC DELIVERY VANS DHL is preparing to roll out a new fleet of electric delivery vans that will serve U.S. markets. Capable of running up to 100 miles on a charge, the vans have ultra-low floors to reduce physical stress on workers’ knees and back, and a high roof design that maximizes cargo space. HONDA PARTNERS WITH CATL ON LI-ION EV BATTERIES "Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL) signed a cooperation agreement with Honda Motor in Tokyo to cooperate formally to develop electric vehicles for the future market." says Green Car COngress: "Under the agreement, CATL will become Honda’s partner in the field of lithium-ion EV batteries. CATL will guarantee the supply to Honda of about 56 GWh of lithium-ion EV batteries before 2027. CATL currently uses NCM as a core material in its automotive cells; energy density is as high as 240 Wh/kg." Honda makes an excellent PHEV, the Clarity PHEV with an electric range of 47 miles, almost as good as the Chevy Volt which unfortunately will be discontinued soon. https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/02/20190206-hondacatl.html VANDOORNE FINDING MORE JOY WITHOUT F1 POLITICS com's Scott Mitchell reports: "Ex-McLaren driver Stoffel Vandoorne says he is enjoying Formula E following his Formula 1 exit because of the difference in camaraderie between drivers and paddock “politics”." TESLA MODEL 3 U.S. DELIVERIES DIP AS IT SHIPS TO GLOBAL MARKETS First week of February and InsideEVs are estimating the January Tesla Model 3 sales numbers: "The expected result of shifting to overseas is seen in our estimates, but that doesn’t imply that demand for the Model 3 has fallen. In fact, demand abroad is high and is being fulfilled now, so on the U.S. side, a slip was inevitable. Our estimates show that Tesla delivered some 6,500 Mo del 3 to U.S. buyers in January 2019. Yes, that’s down considerably compared to the later months of 2018, but it’s actually way up from the 1,875 sold in the U.S. in January 2018." As for the LEAF: "How will the announcement of the upcoming 2019 Nissan LEAF Plus (e+) impact Nissan LEAF U.S. deliveries? (LEAF sales are bleak at 717 for January, but this still parallels January 2016 and 2017 figures. It’s not really fair to compare LEAF sales from January 2018.)" https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-sales-u-s-january-2019/ https://insideevs.com/january-2019-u-s-plug-in-ev-sales-report-card/ TOYOTA'S HUGE SALES DIP MARKS A ROUGH START TO 2019 "Toyota is already down 7.1% on North American automobile sales this year, as compared to January 2018, and Lexus isn’t far behind with a 2.8% decrease in volume." reports Jalopnik: "Most of the losses are lead by aging models like the Prius." https://jalopnik.com/toyotas-huge-sales-dip-marks-a-rough-start-to-2019-1832303081 TESLA’S CCS ADAPTER ENABLES MODEL S AND X TO CHARGE UP 120 KW, WILL NOT BE STANDARD Some confusion around a story over the weekend about Tesla CCS connectors. "Starting this month, Tesla is including a new CCS adapter with all new Model S and Model X orders in Europe so that owners can take advantage of the growing CCS fast-charging networks on the old continent, according to an update on their website." reported Electrek. And then updated their story: "Tesla responded to this story saying that the update on their website was inaccurate. It will not be standard and it’s unclear when it will be available as an accessory." "Tesla has updated its charging connector support page in Europe to show that the new CCS adapter is standard on “all custom order Model S and Model X vehicles from February 1.” Update: Tesla now says that it was a mistake on their part and it will not be standard." https://electrek.co/2019/02/02/tesla-ccs-adapter-standard-model-s-x-europe/ MERCEDES-BENZ EQV ELECTRIC MINIVAN TO DEBUT IN GENEVA "Mercedes-Benz will unveil an electric MPV concept at this year’s Geneva motor show, previewing a rival machine to the forthcoming Volkswagen ID Buzz." reports Autocar: "Confirmed at the launch of the facelifted V-Class MPV, the Concept EQV is described as a ‘near-series study’ that will likely closely mirror the production version. It's the fifth confirmed vehicle in the German firm’s electric EQ range, following the EQC SUV that launched last year and the forthcoming EQA hatchback, EQB small SUV and EQS luxury saloon. Those models, along with the EQV, are all due to go on sale by 2022. Mercedes-Benz Vans board member Wilfried Porth described the EQV as the firm’s “next big statement” in the class. Mercedes-Benz Vans already offers the electric eVito and will launch the eSprinter later this year. The eVito is based on the architecture of the regular van and is intended as a ‘last-mile’ delivery vehicle suited to urban use. It's powered by three lithium ion batteries with a total capacity of 41.4kWh, connected to a 113bhp, 221lb ft motor, providing a range of around 93 miles." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mercedes-benz-eqv-electric-people-carrier-due-geneva 31 COMPANIES JOIN DRIVE TO SWITCH TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES "More than 30 global corporates have now pledged to switch their road fleets to electric vehicles through the EV100 initiative, which has set a target of electrifying two million vehicles by 2030 through its membership." according to Michael Holder for Business Green: "Published today, The Climate Group's first annual report on its EV100 initiative reveals 31 companies with a combined revenue of over $500bn have now made EV commitments as part of the campaign, including high profile names such as BT, IKEA, Unilever, EDF, and Heathrow Airport. The report provides a detailed update on the commitments made by 23 member companies, which have together pledged to switch 145,000 vehicles to electric in 66 markets around the world by 2030. Collectively, the EV commitments from these 23 firms could help to save an estimated 6.6 million metric tonnes of CO2, the equivalent carbon footprint of 1.9 million UK households, according to the report." https://www.businessgreen.com/bg/news/3070355/ev100-31-companies-join-drive-to-switch-to-electric-vehicles ELECTRIC VW FOR LESS THAN $22,900 COMING BY 2023-2024 "Michael Jost, Head of Strategy at Volkswagen, said officially that in 2023, or at the latest in 2024, the company will introduce a truly affordable electric car, which will start from less than €20,000 ($22,900). It will be a small car, the size of a T-Roc, which could be described as a compact crossover utility vehicle." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "“MEB and ID. Family are part of the Volkswagen Group’s electric offensive, for which the company is investing around €30 billion by 2023. By 2025, the Group brands plan to increase the number of their all-electric cars from six today to more than 50. Jost, who is also the head of Group Product Strategy, emphasizes that electric vehicles are by no means synonymous with sacrifice: “We build cool electric cars that are fun to drive, beautifully designed and fully networked.” He notes that starting in 2023, or at the latest in 2024, Volkswagen will launch an electric model, which will be the size of a T-Roc, for less than €20,000.” https://insideevs.com/electric-vw-cheap-coming-2023/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. It’s Wednesday 30th May 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. ZIPCAR TO DEPLOY E-GOLFS IN LONDON Ride sharing services, whether that's cars or bikes, are one way of getting a lot of people to try something - and in the case of ZipCar in London, a lot of people soon will be getting their first experience of an electric car. Zipcar is launching a fleet of more than 300 Volkswagen e-Golf electric cars in London, with 325 on the streets of the capital by the end of this year. ZipCar's Flex service means you can drop off your car whenever and wherever you're done using it, which does pose an interesting question about charging. "For consumers, car-sharing services could be a good opportunity to try out an electric car before making the commitment to purchase one. With dealers doing relatively little to sell electric cars, and automakers spending little on advertising, anything that gets the word out could be a big help" say The Drive. Wireless charging is one way to fix the charging problem with car sharing services, or so would be returning the car back to the same spot and ensuring the car is plugged into the charger before your sessions was officially over. SIXT CEO SAYS EVS A POLITICAL MISTAKE From car sharing to car hiring, and the CEO of German rental company Sixt has been wading into the conversation for electric cars. He said a political effort to push the mass rollout of electric cars is a costly political error. “I don’t believe in e-cars, politically it’s a grave mistake,”: said during a conference call yesterday adding critical raw materials, including cobalt, were already under the control of Asian companies. “Range is still a catastrophe. You have to invest billions and billions,” Sixt said, adding that some rental customers who try out electric cars often end up stranded. If I’m wrong we’ll buy as many electric cars as our clients want us to,” said in a call to discuss earnings. NIO FILES FOR $2 BILLION U.S. IPO Chinese company NIO has submitted a confidential filing for an IPO sometime later this year. The Initial Public Offering could raise up to $2bn. That will be used to introduce their range of electric cars, the ES8 being the first for the Chinese market, which they say is already off to a quick start with sales. NIO say "The NIO ES8 is a 7-seater high-performance electric SUV exclusively for the China market. It is a mobile living space on wheels with performance in its DNA." JAGUAR I-PACE SVR COULD DO 0-60 MPH IN 1.8 SECONDS The Jaguar I-PACE is already a fast, well handling car, getting to 60mph in 4.5 seconds from the 394hp on offer. But what if you let Jaguar’s Special Vehicle Operations department the chance to tweak it? Product planning boss Hanno Kirner says they could make a lot quicker, almost too fast. We're talking 0-60 in 1.8seconds. “Yes, we can make it do 0-60 miles per hour in 1.8 seconds,” Kirner said. “It’s a good headline, but once you’ve done it once or twice, and lost your eyes in the back of their sockets, you might not want to do it again. I do worry that the instant torque and performance might be too much for untrained drivers,” he continued. “It may be that we have to impose some kind of restriction so that the performance is limited until they have gone on a driving course or something." MERCEDES-BENZ ESPRINTER TO DELIVERY YOUR PARCELS FOR 93 MILES OF RANGE Not only are the number of EVs sold important to follow, but also what types of electrified vehicles, because working vehicles do far more emission-free miles compared to personal cars. "Next year, we'll see the new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, the electric version of the German automaker's latest cargo van." says Autoblog: "We finally have the details on the new e-van. Mercedes will offer two batteries: a 41 kWh battery that delivers 71.5 miles of range and a 55 kWh battery that offers 93.2 miles of range. The eSprinter is focused on short-range driving for all-day deliveries for companies like UPS and FedEx rather than long-haul driving. The 41 kWh battery can be fully charged in six hours, while the larger battery takes a full eight hours to charge. Using a DC fast charger, however, both batteries can be charged to 80 percent capacity in just 45 minutes." https://www.autoblog.com/2018/05/29/mercedes-benz-esprinter-ev-electric-range/ BMW I3 SAMSUNG SDI 94 AH BATTERY RATED FOR 524,000 MILES The quality of the BMW i3 doesn't just include the carbon fibre construction or the recycled interiors, but down to cell level too. The 94 Ah cells from Samsung SDI have some of the longest life-cycles available. InsideEV's say: "Samsung SDI expects up to 4,600 charging cycles at 25ºC to End-Of-Life (EOL), which in the case of batteries is the point when capacity decreases to 80% (battery still can be used, but is generally not desirable in cars any longer). Since the BMW i3 (33 kWh) is rated at 114 miles (183 km), 4,600 cycles would be more than 524,000 miles (more than 843,000 km). It’s one of the best results in the industry and it’s totally doable because the i3 pack is equipped with a thermal management system." MILK & MORE BUYS 200 STREETSCOOTER ELECTRIC VEHICLE For many years, milk has been delivered to doorsteps by electric milk float. Sadly most of those old milk floats which ran on a bank of 12v car batteries are replaced by diesel vans. However news yesterday looks like we’re going back to the future. The UK’s Milk&More service, which delivers milk and other groceries to your doorstep overnight so they’re ready for you when you wake up, has ordered 200 of the StreetScooter all electric vans. “The StreetScooter is also in keeping with the tradition of British milkmen, who have used electric vehicles for their deliveries since 1930.” Says electric cars report… “We wanted to make this unique tradition relevant again to the requirements of today’s customers,” says Patrick Müller, Managing Director of Milk & More. “In order to do this, we need a local product portfolio, new IT systems as well as reliable, quiet and environmentally friendly vehicles. In the StreetScooter, we have found the ideal vehicle for our needs.” “As a leading innovator, we are also helping customers to take innovative paths in their own industry,” says Jürgen Gerdes, Board Member Corporate Incubations at Deutsche Post DHL Group and responsible for the StreetScooter. “In this way, we achieve sustainable success together.” VOLKSWAGEN EXPECTS TO BEAT ELECTRIC CAR SALES GOAL ON CHINA, EUROPE DEMAND Volkswagen’s core brand expects to beat the company’s stated target of selling 1 million electric cars by 2025, a senior manager said, citing solid demand in China and Europe, as well as untapped potential in the southern hemisphere" according to a Reuters article. Christian Senger, head of electric mobility at the Volkswagen (VW) brand, says: “In the cycle plan where we again and again undertake forward planning for up to 15 years, we see that the markets even want more (electric) cars than we have earmarked.” Reuters continue: "To stoke mass demand, VW is aiming to sell its EVs at the price of conventional combustion engine cars, drawing on MEB synergies and falling battery costs, Senger said. Designed to underpin nearly 30 battery-driven models from four group brands, ranging from the Golf-size I.D. hatchback to the Vizzion sedan, the MEB platform will allow the VW group to gain savings in a production cycle due to economies of scale. VW group has a goal of selling 3 million EVs by 2025, including models from premium brands Audi and Porsche, and Czech division Skoda. Waiting lists for the e-Golf have grown to more than 12 months after state and industry-backed incentives led the model’s price to drop by about a third to about 25,000 euros ($29,020), according to VW." I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
