On December 18, 1898, the Jeantaud electric vehicle set the world's first automotive land speed record of 63.13 km/hr (39.2 mph) over the course of a single kilometer. Although the only electric vehicle at the competition, the Jeantaud handily beat its gasoline-powered competition at the Parc Agricole d'Achères outside Paris. The Jeantaud electric car of 1898 reminds us that electric vehicles once were superior to gasoline cars. If they beat the gasoline competition before, perhaps one day they'll dominate again. Li Auto adjusting their Q1 sales guidance downward was the first topic of discussion in this week's podcast. Of the three WeiXiaoLi triplets, Li Auto has been the darling of Wall Street but their sales have very suddenly hit a wall Tu then gives a short lesson on master production schedules, ordering parts and lead times and how any sudden change in that schedule can complicate things and lead to issues with the supply chain and inventory levels. Tu and Lei move back to a conversation about Xiaomi and their staying power and the power of social media in China and how it can help and hurt you in a very fast and severe way.Lei moves the discussion over to the annual press conference from BMW and how they also would like to continue with free markets for Chinese imports into the European market. The podcast closes out with some quick hits about some photo ops between CEOs, the EV100 and Nvidia GTC conferences, who spoke at them and what they said.

Tu and Lei start this show out by paying homage and giving a big shout-out to their friends that live in Shanghai that are currently on lockdown. After the headlines, Lei gives everyone a lesson on the EV100 Conference that is normally held each January but was delayed and finally put online last week. One highlight of the EV100 was the announcement from Horizon Robotics about licensing their IP to OEMs so that the OEMs could piggyback off of their existing chip technology in order to design their own SoCs.Tu shifts the conversation over to compelling design takes a happy marriage between hardware and software and one without the other would likely make for a bad UX.The discussion then shifts to XPeng earnings. Lei summarizes the ‘flagpoles' that XPeng is planting this year likely hit their margins in 2021. The momentum of the P5 & G9 should help them build on their margins as XPeng only needs to focus on marketing these vehicles and launching them on time and on budget. Tu then shifts to talking about the launch of the Lotus Eletre and the reactions on social media from the various interested parties. Lei discusses how surprised he was about the Lotus's extensive sensor kit for ADAS/AV and how now LiDAR and premium sound have become qualifying features in the near-premium/premium segments. Tu closes out the pod with his take on Vinfast and their aggressive moves into the US market including their recent announcement of building a factory in North Carolina.

Instead of presenting Rivian to the world and asking for funds, he only revealed it with the R1T prototype and plenty of money from Ford and Amazon. The Internet giant wanted an electric van. Apparently, it is close to production since RJ Scaringe tweeted videos of its body in the paint shop.   - It shows a robot painting the interior of the Amazon Van, as it is now known. Amazon alone ordered 100,000 of them   - Having such a massive vehicle submerged in a tank full of zinc phosphate coating is an impressive feat for a company that is yet to deliver its first products but is about to do so. Rivian promised the first R1T and R1S would meet their owners in July.   Original Source : https://www.autoevolution.com/news/rivian-ceo-tweets-videos-of-production-amazon-van-at-the-paint-shop-163667.html   JAGUAR LAND ROVER CLOSE TO SELECTING UK BATTERY PLANT, CEO TELLS PAPER   - Jaguar Land Rover is close to announcing plans to source batteries for its electric vehicles from the UK, CEO Thierry Bollore told the Financial Times. The automaker also will take closer control of key parts such as microprocessors and batteries as it overhauls its supply chain, Bollore told the paper   - Bollore told the FT that batteries will be as critical in future as engine-making is today, and JLR is also "exploring all possibilities" about whether to make or buy batteries for its electric vehicles.   - Sourcing batteries from a UK plant is the "favorite scenario," he said, adding that the company is in final discussions with a handful of battery manufacturers about plant location.   - the Jaguar brand will become all-electric starting in 2025 and Land Rover will aim to make 60 percent of its sales zero emissions vehicles by 2030.   - He said JLR's only full-electric model, the Jaguar I-Pace, will continue for several years including new derivatives, but will not be directly replaced. The Range Rover and Land Rover Defender will get full-electric versions, he said.   Original Source : https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/jaguar-land-rover-close-selecting-uk-battery-plant-ceo-tells-paper   NATIONAL GRID FIRST MAJOR US UTILITY TO COMMIT TO ELECTRIFY ITS FLEET   - Major utility company National Grid is electrifying close to 6,000 vehicles in the UK and US. The energy company, which will electrify 2,879 vehicles in the UK and 2,905 vehicles in the US, also installs charging sites in the UK and will continue to add 2,900 chargers for its fleets to the 1,400 points already deployed in its US territories.   - National Grid is also joining the EV100 initiative and becomes the first major US utility to commit to electrifying its fleet.   - The utility operates 50 medium and heavy-duty electrified vehicles while replacing the company passenger cars with electric vehicles. Those in their 40s were next on the list, buying 2,627 EVs, and those in their 60s purchased 2,013. People in their 30s bought 1,772 EVs, and buyers in their 20s were the smallest segment, purchasing only 466 -- fewer than people in their 70s. Corporate purchases amounted to 4,497 vehicles, or 30.1 percent of the total. People in their 40s were the biggest buyers of imported EVs, purchasing 600 of the 3,357 imported EVs sold here in 2020, according to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association. The data did not include Tesla, which sold 11,826 vehicles in 2020, as the company is not a member of the association.   - According to a survey released this month by the KEPCO Research Institute, a corporate research and development subsidiary of the state-run Korea Electric Power Corp., the average monthly mileage for EVs was 1,984 km -- almost double the figure for internal combustion engines, which was 1,053 km.   Original Source : http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20210621000270   TESLA CHINA TO LAUNCH POWERWALL BATTERIES AND RESIDENTIAL SOLAR FOR DOMESTIC MARKET   - Announcements posted online in China indicate that the Tesla Powerwall is formally coming to the country in two days, with the company holding a solar, storage, and charging event on June 23, 2021. Hybrid vehicles and plug in hybrids are cheaper to run, but only slightly, ringing in at $0.094 and $0.09 per mile to run. Full battery electric vehicles, on the other hand, are much, much less expensive to run and maintain, coming in at just $0.061 per mile. Now, a difference of just four cents per mile might not sound like much, until you realize just how many miles government owned, light-duty vehicles travel each and every year. According to the U.S. General Services Administration, government-owned light-duty vehicles traveled 1,958,202,121 miles in 2019.   - a hypothetical full-electric government fleet would have saved just over $78 million in maintenance costs.   - this calculation doesn't even factor in how much money EVs potentially save in average fuel costs per mile, which would likely widen that $78 million gap to an even more eye-popping sum   - The U.S. Office Of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy has recently given us insight into just how much cheaper electrics can be   Original Source : https://www.motortrend.com/news/government-ev-ice-maintenance-cost-comparison/   PROTERRA AND MIAMI-DADE COUNTY ANNOUNCE FLEET ELECTRIFICATION   - Miami-Dade to install one of the largest fleet charging systems in the U.S. with 75 Proterra chargers across three bus depots. Show #873   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 21st August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   SERIES PRODUCTION OF VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 BEGINS From VW: Volkswagen’s electric offensive continues to gather speed: Series production of the brand’s first all-electric SUV, the ID.4, gets underway in Zwickau. The world premiere of the ID.4 follows at the end of September. Preparations to roll out the electric SUV at international level are also in full swing. Pre-production of the ID.4 has already started at the Anting plant in China, the Chattanooga site will start the ID.4 production in 2022. The SUV will initially be launched with rear-wheel drive, while an electric all-wheel drive version will be added a later date.   PushEVs points out: "The Volkswagen ID.4 made in Europe is using the new NCM 712 battery cells made by LG Chem in Poland. Later on, the made in USA version will get its battery cells from SK Innovation and the made in China version will probably get its battery cells from CATL. Made with very energy dense and affordable NCM 712 batteries – that cost below 100 euros per kWh -, the expensive Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 will be extremely profitable electric cars (on average way more than 15.000 euros per unit). That’s why Volkswagen will only try to sell the cheaper electric triplets (UpMiiGo) made on the old MQB platform when it’s required to reach EU emissions targets. This year thanks to the COVID-19 lockdowns, ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) car sales dropped a lot, this is great but also means that Volkswagen won’t have to sell as many electric cars as it was previously expected. The very profitable ID.3 and ID.4 will be enough to comply with EU emissions regulations and VW doesn’t need to sell any more triplets this year."   https://pushevs.com/2020/08/20/series-production-of-volkswagen-id-4-begins-in-zwickau/   TESLA IS ROLLING OUT SUSPENSION UPDATE WITH REAL-TIME VISUALIZATION "Tesla has started rolling out a new suspension update with real-time visualization of the suspension for Model S and Model X vehicles equipped with the new fully-adaptive damping suspension." says Fred at Electrek: "Model S and Model X vehicles have long been equipped with a standard “smart” air suspension, but when Tesla launched the new Raven Model S and Model X vehicles last year, it updated the vehicles with a new adaptive suspension."   Tesla said: "You can now see a real-time visualization of how the suspension system is dynamically adjusting each wheel’s damping to account for changing road conditions. Tap “Show Suspension Data” to get even more real-time information. Adaptive Suspension Damping now has an ADVANCED setting that allows you to set custom levels of Ride Comfort and Handling in addition to the existing COMFORT, AUTO, and SPORT settings. We have simplified the Tesla suspension control logic to better support both temporary and more permanent heights. If Ride Heights is manually adjusted to High or Very High, your car now automatically lowers after you drive a short distance. In preparation for this transition, officials and pertinent organizations are now initiating a deeper dive into the technology." says Tesmanian: "The call for evidence will look at the Automated Lane Keeping System (ALKS)--an automated technology that can take over control of the vehicle at low speeds, keeping it in the lane on motorways. Following the approval of ALKS Regulation in June 2020 by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)--of which the UK is a member--the technology is likely to be available in cars entering the UK market from Spring 2021. The government is acting now to ensure that regulation is ready where necessary for its introduction."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/hands-free-driving-could-be-made-legal-on-uk-roads-by-spring-2021   CHINESE EV MAKER NIO LAUNCHES BATTERY LEASING SERVICE "Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker Nio Inc has launched a battery leasing service that will allow drivers to buy an EV without owning the battery pack - one of the most expensive EV components - thereby lowering the starting price of its cars." reports Reuters: "The service, called “battery as a service” (BaaS), entails drivers paying a monthly rental fee for use of the batteries. The cheapest Nio car after subsidies is now an ES6 sport-utility vehicle (SUV) priced 273,600 yuan ($39,553) without ownership of the battery pack, versus 343,600 yuan including the pack. Nio operates 143 battery-swapping stations around China, where drivers can swap spent battery packs for fully charged replacements.  Nio’s battery packs are the same shape and size across its lineup, which is comprised of three SUVs. EV models from peer BAIC BluePark New Energy Technology Co Ltd also have standardised batteries."   https://in.reuters.com/article/nio-battery-electric/chinese-ev-maker-nio-launches-battery-leasing-service-eyes-global-market-idINKBN25G0V4?il=0   ELECTRIC I-PACE SUV GETS A CHEAPER MODEL... FOR GERMANY Jaguar is working on a new entry-level I-PACE but it could be a Europe-only affair. It looks to be a limited-edition model, which is strange considering it makes less power and costs less than the full-fat model, called the ‘EV320 SE’. That numbers refers to the metric horsepower, which translates to 238kW. " according to stuff.co.nz: "Jag reckons the SUV will hit 100kmh in 6.4 seconds, compared to 4.8 for the existing EV400. Velocity tops out 180kmh versus 200kmh but range is an identical 480km. Being a special edition, the EV320 gets optional extras thrown on as standard. That includes 20-inch wheels, an electrically-opening boot, electric heated mirrors, LED headlights, 14-way adjustable leather sports seats, driving assists and a pair of touchscreens on the centre console. Alongside delivering multiple technical and operational enhancements, the introduction of hybrid technology will ultimately reduce the Army's reliance on fossil fuels"   https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-8646565/British-Army-trials-hybrid-powered-military-vehicles-improve-stealth.html   UK SAFARI RE-OPENS USING ELECTRIC VEHICLES "" Hyundai is helping leading family Theme Park and Zoo, Chessington World of Adventures Resort get going again by providing electric cars for the resort's a brand-new Safari Adventure VIP Experience." says Motor1: "In a first for a UK attraction, guests will be driven by a park ranger in a fleet of fully-electric Kona crossovers, travelling among zebras, giraffes and more in the resort's African animal Wanyama Reserve."   https://uk.motor1.com/news/439716/uk-safari-re-opens-using-electric-vehicles/   LYFT JOINS EV100 "Lyft, the ride-sharing company from the US, has joined EV100 by announcing its commitment to reaching 100% electric vehicles on its platform by 2030." says Smart Transport website: "The company is estimating that making the switch will save drivers on its platform around $10 billion in reduced vehicle operating expenses. EV100 is an initiative by international non-profit The Climate Group, bringing together over 70 companies committed to accelerating the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and making electric transport the new normal by 2030.  Other members include Lime, AstraZeneca, and Ingka Group (IKEA)."   https://www.smarttransport.org.uk/news/latest-news/lyft-joins-ev100-and-commits-to-full-ev-switch-by-2030   RENAULT INTRODUCES ZOE IN SOUTH KOREA "Renault, through its Renault Samsung Motors subsidiary (owned in 80.1% by Renault and 19.9% by Samsung), is introducing in South Korea its flagship electric car Renault ZOE." reports InsideEVs: "After deducting generous subsidies of about 11.9 million won ($10,075), the effective prices are from 28.1 to 32.1 million won ($23,900 to $27,300). We can guess that Renault targets to sell at least a few thousand ZOE per year in the country, which might become the largest export market for ZOE outside Europe."   https://insideevs.com/news/439808/renault-zoe-south-korea/   ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES TRIPLE IN AUSTRALIA "Sales of electric vehicles in Australia tripled in 2019 despite a lack of government support, according to the industry’s peak body. The country’s network of electric vehicle charging stations was also growing, the Electric Vehicle Council’s annual report found, including a rise in the number of faster charging stations" writes The Guardian: " There are now 28 electric models on sale, with eight priced below $65,000. Six more were due to arrive before the end of 2021, including two priced below $50,000, the council’s report said. The Morrison government promised a national electric vehicle strategy would be finalised by the middle of this year, but the policy has been delayed. The prime minister, Scott Morrison, last year accused Labor of wanting to “end the weekend” and force people out of four-wheel drives."   Mein Urlaub mit dem ID.3 https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/mein-urlaub-mit-dem-id3-herbert-diess/?trackingId=%2Fp6xj%2FhYvRFRWxMENi8%2FbA%3D%3D   Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Group. Blogging his Summer holiday in an ID.3   From Google Translate: "We had a great time with the ID.3 on the way to Italy and there. Vacation trips with modern electric cars are already working really well today. The cars offer so much comfort and drive so confidently that the vacation can begin with great serenity even with the vacation trip. The charging infrastructure between Munich and Lake Garda was also well developed, only the charging stations will have to be displayed more precisely on our navigation systems in the future - there is currently a discrepancy of around 200 meters with some. The evolution of the bubblegum pop sound from the Platinum Age (1904-1950) to the Atomic Age (1950-1966) to the Golden Age (1966-1970)! A scholarly definition of bubblegum music! Bubblegum is the basic sound of rock'n' roll – minus the rage, fear, and violence, wrote legendary rock critic Lester Bangs, and we follow the growth of that basic sound through almost 150 bubblegum songs from Bob Roberts' "The Woodchuck Song" in 1904 to The Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You" in 1970 and everything in between!

Show #695   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 12th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Professional, well researched, entertaining ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Martin is a professional DJ with a real passion for EVs. The podcast is always well researched, clearly takes many hours to script, record and post. It condenses all the most important news into 15 odd minutes. The only real problem - my commute is more like 30mins :) My biggest frustration - I... MondoTV via Apple Podcasts · Australia · 02/10/20 From down under! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Martin, have been a subscriber before U got to 100 episodes!! Have a background in renewable fuels since late 90’s but now feel EV is the better choice going forward (& have ordered a cybertruck to confirm this) & am impressed with the amount of EV infrastructure already in place in... Cudlee via Apple Podcasts · Australia · 02/10/20   CANOO & HYUNDAI TO CO-DEVELOP EV PLATFORM "The US American electric vehicle startup and the South Korean automotive giant have teamed up in an engineering partnership to develop electric vehicles. Canoo and Hyundai will co-develop an electric vehicle platform based on Canoo’s skateboard technology to be used for upcoming Hyundai and Kia EVs and PBVs (Purpose Built Vehicles)." writes electrive: "Canoo has made waves with their subscription-based EVs designed on a scalable skateboard platform for which they recently opened a waitlist. The company has put particular attention into their functional integration, which they say “reduces the skateboard size, weight and total number of parts, which ultimately provides more interior cabin space and a more cost-effective EV offering.” This kind of flexibility in design would allow for Hyundai to develop a rather large series of EVs."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/11/canoo-hyundai-to-co-develop-ev-platform/   THE NIKOLA MOTOR BADGER WILL HAVE 600 MILE RANGE "Today, Nikola Motors unveiled a new electric truck, the Badger. The vehicle is still in the early stages of development, but the company is working on a battery electric version and a hydrogen fuel cell electric configuration that can also recharge its onboard battery from the grid. The Badger will hit the market with a 600 mile (965 km) range and a 0–60 mph time of 2.9 seconds." writes Kyle at Clean Technica: "The Badger is the result of years of work by the Nikola team, and according to CEO Trevor Milton, it is now ready to hit the market. the massive 160 kWh battery in the Badger brings new functionality to workers with a 15 kW power export outlet that will allow owners to use their truck to provide electricity to power their workday. That’s more than enough juice to run power tools, job lights, compressors, and the like."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/02/10/the-nikola-motor-badger-will-have-600-mile-range-arrive-as-a-bev-fcev/   TESLA IS BUILDING A PILOT BATTERY CELL MANUFACTURING LINE IN FREMONT "If you needed more proof that Tesla is going to make its own battery cells, we’ve now learned that Tesla is building a pilot battery cell manufacturing line in Fremont and designing its own equipment to produce the cells." says electrek": Other job listings also show plans for Tesla to produce its own battery cells in Europe"   https://electrek.co/2020/02/11/tesla-building-pilot-battery-cell-manufacturing-line-fremont/   INNOVATIVE SOLUTION FOR ULTRA-FAST CHARGING ELECTRIC VEHICLES E.ON and Volkswagen Group Components are giving a new impetus with the prototype of a new, flexible ultra-fast charging station that will be presented in Essen. By integrating a battery system, it will be possible to install ultra-fast charging stations almost anywhere and at significantly lower cost without civil engineering or mains connection.. To ensure that the battery installed in the charging station always has sufficient capacity, it is permanently fed by a conventional 16 to 63 ampere power connection. E.ON will operate the rapid chargers exclusively with green electricity. Updates, remote maintenance and billing of the charging points will be carried out via E.ON's central software platform.   https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2020/02/ultra-fast_charging.html   SEAT CUPRA LEON PHEV HOT HATCH TEASED "Following in Skoda’s footsteps, SEAT has officially announced it too will launch its own plug-in hybrid hot hatch (and wagon) versions of the recently unveiled Leon family car. Called the Cupra Leon, it will first be shown at its own launch event on February 20, before being unveiled to the public at the 2020 Geneva motor show." reports InsideEVs: "This particular model is not only the first performance PHEV in Spanish automaker’s history, but it’s the first hot Leon that no longer wears the SEAT badge. Its powertrain will be the same one that motivates the new Skoda Octavia RS plug-in hybrid, comprised of a 1.4-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor and drawing juice from a 13 kWh battery."   https://insideevs.com/news/398035/seat-teases-cupra-leon-phev-hot-hatch/   LACK OF SUPPLY IS SLOWING THE CORPORATE EV TRANSITION "Major international companies are charging ahead on electric vehicles (EVs) to address the climate crisis, tackle air pollution and meet growing customer expectations – but they are increasingly confronted with a lack of vehicle supply says a new report by global non-profit The Climate Group." according to Smart-energy.com: "Five more companies have joined EV100 today from the UK, France, US and Denmark.  The UK’s Lloyds Banking Group will convert its own commercial fleet of 12,000 vehicles and continue to install 83 charging sites at relevant locations for staff and customers. Zenith, independent leasing, fleet management and vehicle outsourcing business, will electrify all of the 48,000 vehicles in its fleet which it procures on behalf of its customers, as well as its own corporate fleet."   https://www.smart-energy.com/industry-sectors/electric-vehicles/lack-of-supply-is-slowing-the-corporate-ev-transition-report/   NISSAN'S COMBUSTION ENGINE 'LULLABY' HELPS KIDS NOD OFF IN ELECTRIC CARS "Nissan has worked with sound engineers to create a 'lullaby' based on the sound of internal combustion engines to help kids nod off in near-silent electric cars like the new Nissan Leaf." says Tech Radar: "The resulting track, Nissan Leaf Dream Drive, is available free on all major music streaming services, including Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music. Nissan found that parents often take young children on short drives at bedtime, using the rumble of the car's engine to help the little ones nod off. The low and mid frequencies have a particularly soothing effect."   https://www.techradar.com/nz/news/nissans-combustion-engine-lullaby-helps-kids-nod-off-in-electric-cars-and-its-free   GIGAFACTORY 4: TESLA APPLIES FOR STATE FUNDING IN GERMANY "Tesla has submitted the expected application for subsidies to the state of Brandenburg for the construction of the Gigafactory 4 near Berlin. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier has now formulated “certain criteria” for a possible federal subsidy." says Laura at Electrive; "On the federal level, Minister of Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier had also promised Tesla State subsidies, this time concerning an earlier application to also build battery cells in Germany, although at a later stage. As Altmaier told the newspaper Welt am Sonntag, companies would have to “meet certain requirements regarding the sustainability and performance of the batteries” to receive government support."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/10/gigafactory-4-tesla-applies-for-state-funding-in-germany/   BATTERIES: WE’RE NOWHERE NEAR THE BOTTOM OF THE PRICE CURVES Electrek says: "On a recent trip to Detroit, we spent a few minutes with Tim Grewe, GM’s director of battery cell engineering and electrification strategy. "The costs are coming down dramatically. We’re not anywhere close to the bottom. When we started [making EVs], we didn’t have the field data. So we were conservative with the batteries. The active material inside the cell was number one. But you still have to work on everything else."   The costs are coming down dramatically. We’re not anywhere close to the bottom. Show #440   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 11th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   U.S. LAWMAKERS MAKE BIG PUSH TO FURTHER EXPAND EV TAX CREDIT "A conglomeration of “bipartisan” U.S. lawmakers want to extend the current federal EV tax credit to 400,000 cars produced. Currently, the credit begins to “sunset” at 200k sold. This current situation works to hinder automakers like Tesla and GM that have worked hard to produce and promote EV adoption. Meanwhile, it gives those that have been slow to adopt a huge and arguably unfair edge. says InsideEVs today: "This new bill — the “Driving America Forward Act” — would work to add an additional 400k EVs on top of each current automaker’s 200k on the previous program. However, it would then lessen the phase-out period to nine months instead of 12-15. Still, the bill would allow hardcore players like Tesla, GM, and even Nissan to take advantage during a time that — in the current situation — other automakers are now just catching up."   kdawg says: "Instead of just adding 400K per manufacturer, they should have set an overall limit for the total plugins sold."   The Reuters report which broke the news said: "GM and Tesla shares rose on Reuters report that the bill would be introduced. Tesla shares recently traded up nearly 1 percent, while GM was up 0.2 percent. The proposal has strong backing from automakers, environmental groups and others, but will face opposition. Last month, the White House proposed immediately eliminating the $7,500 tax credit, a move it said would save the U.S. government $2.5 billion over a decade. Senator John Barrasso, a Republican who chairs the Environment and Public Works Committee, in February proposed legislation to end the credit and impose a highway user fee on EVs to pay for road repairs."   https://insideevs.com/u-s-lawmakers-bill-boost-ev-tax-credits/   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-autos-electric-taxcredit-exclusive/exclusive-u-s-lawmakers-introduce-bill-to-boost-electric-car-tax-credits-idUSKCN1RM1NG   TESLA MODEL 3 BECOMES #1 BEST-SELLING CAR IN SWITZERLAND IN MARCH, BAR NONE "Sales reports from Switzerland have revealed that the Tesla Model 3 was the country’s #1 best-selling car in March 2019, bar none. This marked the first time that an all-electric vehicle was able to top the country’s sales charts, which include vehicles powered by an internal combustion engine." says Simon at Teslarati: "Tesla sold 1,094 units of the Model 3 in Switzerland last month, as indicated by the numbers of sales statistics site Auto Schweiz. The Model 3’s figures were around 27% higher than the second-ranking vehicle in the country, the widely popular Skoda Octavia, which sold 801 units in March. The Model 3’s feat represented significant milestones for the Silicon Valley-based automaker, as it was able to achieve a record market share of 4.3% in Switzerland’s auto market. These are impressive figures, especially since deliveries of the Tesla Model 3 only started in February."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-best-selling-car-switzerland/   TESLA MODEL S ROAMER MOTORHOME IS THE EV CAMPER OF THE FUTURE InsideEVs has details on a Tesla frankenstein motorhome: "The mastermind behind this project is a man named Travis Rabenberg. You might expect this build to incorporate Tesla’s Model X SUV, but it’s actually based on the Model S P90D. Rabenberg calls it the Tesla Roamer, and as you can see, it deletes the sedan’s rear haunches for a small living space that has a pop-up roof, a bed, and provisions for water to operate a sink and toilet also included. And since you can’t have an electric motorhome with solar power, the Tesla Roamer incorporates a solar panel with the capability of generating 1,000 watts of juice."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-s-roamer-motorhome-ev-camper/   CHINA EV STARTUP BORDRIN SKIPS FLASH, KEEPS REAL-CAR FOCUS "Chinese electric vehicle makers have proliferated in recent years, with dozens sketching ambitious plans to enter the market. Some of the top competitors have spent millions showcasing concepts at places such as CES to ensure they stand out amid a crowded field. Bordrin Motor Corp., on the other hand, has been content to keep quiet." says Autmotive News China: "Since its founding in 2016 by former Ford senior engineer Ximing Huang, Bordrin has concentrated on building real cars. The results of these first efforts will soon be seen by outsiders for the first time. This week, the company will unveil its first production model, the B31 SUV, along with a premium-segment concept that Lavine says is "pretty damn feasible." The debuts will take place Thursday, April 11, at a company event that precedes the Shanghai auto show, where the public will see them starting April 16."   http://www.autonewschina.com/en/article.asp?id=18872   HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC SEES MSRP SPIKE AFTER CHEVY BOLT INCENTIVE DROPS "This isn’t about dealer price gouging, but instead, Hyundai quietly raised the Kona Electric’s official starting price." according to Steven Loveday at INsideEVs.com: "Fortunately, the Hyundai Kona Electric’s new MSRP is only up by $500. It may make no difference in the end, since dealers set prices and some are already charging a premium for the popular vehicle. However, it could mean that the Kona Electric will become even more expensive. This quiet move by Hyundai comes on the heels of GM’s federal EV tax credit halving."   https://insideevs.com/hyundai-kona-ev-msrp-spike/   AUSTRIAN AND SWISS POSTAL SERVICES PLEDGE TO GO 100% EV BY 2030 "National postal companies Swiss Post and Austrian Post have committed to fully electrifying their delivery fleets by 2030. The announcement comes as they join EV100, an EV initiative led by non-profit The Climate Group." reports Ryan Austin for ChargedEVs: "To join EV100, companies must make public commitments to integrate EVs into their service fleets or install EV chargers on premises for staff and customers. As part of its pledge, Austrian Post is set to switch more than 9,000 vehicles to electric drive. Post CH (a subsidiary of Swiss Post) said it will switch more than 10,000 vehicles to electric as part of its EV100 pledge. The company has already electrified its mail delivery fleet of 6,000 three-wheeled vehicles. It now plans to switch 4,600 delivery vans (up to 3.5 tons) and 180 service vehicles to EVs by 2030."   https://chargedevs.com/newswire/austrian-and-swiss-postal-services-pledge-to-go-100-ev-by-2030/   INFINITI TO LAUNCH FIRST ELECTRIC CAR, TO BE MADE IN CHINA And finally a Reuters report on Autoblog today: "The first electric car for Nissan's premium brand Infiniti will be a sporty sedan produced in China, the Japanese carmaker said in a statement viewed by Reuters ahead of a public announcement expected as soon as Wednesday. The vehicle would hit the market in around three years, and consumers would get a taste when the company unveils a concept car, dubbed the Qs Inspiration electric sedan, at the Shanghai auto show later this week, Nissan officials said. Brand officials have said that from 2021 every Infiniti model launched will be either an all-electric car or so-called "e-Power" hybrids, underlining Nissan's previously announced plan to make Infiniti primarily an electrified offering."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/04/10/infiniti-electric-car-china-qs-concept/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.     TESLA MODEL 3 U.S. DELIVERIES DIP AS IT SHIPS TO GLOBAL MARKETS First week of February and InsideEVs are estimating the January Tesla Model 3 sales numbers: "The expected result of shifting to overseas is seen in our estimates, but that doesn’t imply that demand for the Model 3 has fallen. In fact, demand abroad is high and is being fulfilled now, so on the U.S. side, a slip was inevitable. Our estimates show that Tesla delivered some 6,500 Mo del 3 to U.S. buyers in January 2019. Yes, that’s down considerably compared to the later months of 2018, but it’s actually way up from the 1,875 sold in the U.S. in January 2018."   As for the LEAF: "How will the announcement of the upcoming 2019 Nissan LEAF Plus (e+) impact Nissan LEAF U.S. deliveries? (LEAF sales are bleak at 717 for January, but this still parallels January 2016 and 2017 figures. It’s not really fair to compare LEAF sales from January 2018.)"   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-sales-u-s-january-2019/   https://insideevs.com/january-2019-u-s-plug-in-ev-sales-report-card/   TOYOTA'S HUGE SALES DIP MARKS A ROUGH START TO 2019 "Toyota is already down 7.1% on North American automobile sales this year, as compared to January 2018, and Lexus isn’t far behind with a 2.8% decrease in volume." reports Jalopnik: "Most of the losses are lead by aging models like the Prius."   https://jalopnik.com/toyotas-huge-sales-dip-marks-a-rough-start-to-2019-1832303081   TESLA’S CCS ADAPTER ENABLES MODEL S AND X TO CHARGE UP 120 KW, WILL NOT BE STANDARD Some confusion around a story over the weekend about Tesla CCS connectors. "Starting this month, Tesla is including a new CCS adapter with all new Model S and Model X orders in Europe so that owners can take advantage of the growing CCS fast-charging networks on the old continent, according to an update on their website." reported Electrek. And then updated their story: "Tesla responded to this story saying that the update on their website was inaccurate. It will not be standard and it’s unclear when it will be available as an accessory." "Tesla has updated its charging connector support page in Europe to show that the new CCS adapter is standard on “all custom order Model S and Model X vehicles from February 1.” Update: Tesla now says that it was a mistake on their part and it will not be standard."   https://electrek.co/2019/02/02/tesla-ccs-adapter-standard-model-s-x-europe/   MERCEDES-BENZ EQV ELECTRIC MINIVAN TO DEBUT IN GENEVA "Mercedes-Benz will unveil an electric MPV concept at this year’s Geneva motor show, previewing a rival machine to the forthcoming Volkswagen ID Buzz." reports Autocar: "Confirmed at the launch of the facelifted V-Class MPV, the Concept EQV is described as a ‘near-series study’ that will likely closely mirror the production version. It's the fifth confirmed vehicle in the German firm’s electric EQ range, following the EQC SUV that launched last year and the forthcoming EQA hatchback, EQB small SUV and EQS luxury saloon. Those models, along with the EQV, are all due to go on sale by 2022. Mercedes-Benz Vans board member Wilfried Porth described the EQV as the firm’s “next big statement” in the class. Mercedes-Benz Vans already offers the electric eVito and will launch the eSprinter later this year. The eVito is based on the architecture of the regular van and is intended as a ‘last-mile’ delivery vehicle suited to urban use. It's powered by three lithium ion batteries with a total capacity of 41.4kWh, connected to a 113bhp, 221lb ft motor, providing a range of around 93 miles."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mercedes-benz-eqv-electric-people-carrier-due-geneva   31 COMPANIES JOIN DRIVE TO SWITCH TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES "More than 30 global corporates have now pledged to switch their road fleets to electric vehicles through the EV100 initiative, which has set a target of electrifying two million vehicles by 2030 through its membership." according to Michael Holder for Business Green: "Published today, The Climate Group's first annual report on its EV100 initiative reveals 31 companies with a combined revenue of over $500bn have now made EV commitments as part of the campaign, including high profile names such as BT, IKEA, Unilever, EDF, and Heathrow Airport. The report provides a detailed update on the commitments made by 23 member companies, which have together pledged to switch 145,000 vehicles to electric in 66 markets around the world by 2030. Collectively, the EV commitments from these 23 firms could help to save an estimated 6.6 million metric tonnes of CO2, the equivalent carbon footprint of 1.9 million UK households, according to the report."   https://www.businessgreen.com/bg/news/3070355/ev100-31-companies-join-drive-to-switch-to-electric-vehicles   ELECTRIC VW FOR LESS THAN $22,900 COMING BY 2023-2024 "Michael Jost, Head of Strategy at Volkswagen, said officially that in 2023, or at the latest in 2024, the company will introduce a truly affordable electric car, which will start from less than €20,000 ($22,900). It will be a small car, the size of a T-Roc, which could be described as a compact crossover utility vehicle." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "“MEB and ID. Family are part of the Volkswagen Group’s electric offensive, for which the company is investing around €30 billion by 2023. By 2025, the Group brands plan to increase the number of their all-electric cars from six today to more than 50. Jost, who is also the head of Group Product Strategy, emphasizes that electric vehicles are by no means synonymous with sacrifice: “We build cool electric cars that are fun to drive, beautifully designed and fully networked.” He notes that starting in 2023, or at the latest in 2024, Volkswagen will launch an electric model, which will be the size of a T-Roc, for less than €20,000.”   https://insideevs.com/electric-vw-cheap-coming-2023/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 20th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   CORRECTION: NORWAY'S ELECTRIC PLANE TOOK OFF First of all I can't begin without sorting out my mistake yesterday because I’m an idiot. And I need to learn which day of the week is Monday. On yesterday's show I talked with you about Norway’s electric plane taking off next Monday. Think again genius. It took off last Monday. Reuters reports: "Transport Minister Ketil Solvik-Olsen and Dag Falk-Petersen, head of state-run Avinor which runs most of Norway’s airports, took a few minutes’ flight around Oslo airport in an Alpha Electro G2 plane, built by Pipistrel in Slovenia. "Norway aims to be 100 percent electric by 2040 for all short-haul flights. Avinor, which is responsible for the country's 44 airports, has bought the electric aircraft used Monday. The operator plans to launch a tender offer to test a commercial route flown with a small electric plane with 19 seats, starting in 2025."   https://phys.org/news/2018-06-peek-future-electric-plane-cruises.html   SMALL FIRE, ELON ASKS STAFF TO REMAIN VIGILIANT IN THE FACE OF SABOTAGE Tesla said in an email that on Sunday night there had been a "Smouldering in an air filter in the welding area of the body line. The smouldering was extinguished in a matter of seconds. There were no injuries or significant equipment damage, and production is back online." The company did not specify the location of the fire, which Reuters was unable to independently confirm. And then came the really big news about sabotage. "I was dismayed to learn this weekend about a Tesla employee who had conducted quite extensive and damaging sabotage to our operations. This included making direct code changes to the Tesla Manufacturing Operating System under false usernames and exporting large amounts of highly sensitive Tesla data to unknown third parties. The full extent of his actions are not yet clear, but what he has admitted to so far is pretty bad. His stated motivation is that he wanted a promotion that he did not receive. In light of these actions, not promoting him was definitely the right move. As you know, there are a long list of organizations that want Tesla to die. These include Wall Street short-sellers, who have already lost billions of dollars and stand to lose a lot more. Then there are the oil & gas companies, the wealthiest industry in the world — they don't love the idea of Tesla advancing the progress of solar power & electric cars. Don't want to blow your mind, but rumor has it that those companies are sometimes not super nice. Then there are the multitude of big gas/diesel car company competitors. If they're willing to cheat so much about emissions, maybe they're willing to cheat in other ways? Please be extremely vigilant, particularly over the next few weeks as we ramp up the production rate to 5k/week. This is when outside forces have the strongest motivation to stop us. Looking forward to having a great week with you as we charge up the super exciting ramp to 5000 Model 3 cars per week!"   2019 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV WLTP-RATED 45 KILOMETERS OF ELECTRIC RANGE AutoEvolution is one of a few outlets today reporting on the updated Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: "A significant update over the previous model year, the Outlander PHEV tops at 135 km/h (84 mph) in all-electric mode compared to the old version’s 125 km/h (78 mph). But being a plug-in hybrid, it’s best to drive the mid-size utility vehicle at lower speeds in order to maximize the efficiency of the drivetrain. In addition to the mechanical improvements, electric range also goes up to 45 kilometres (28 miles) on WLTP." The battery gets a bump to 19.5kWh.   WHY GHOSN'S RENAULT PAYCHECK DEPENDS ON EV SALES Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn has a new incentive to promote development and sales of electric vehicles: A significant part of his pay now depends on it." according to AutoNews.com: "Under the new pay plan, 30 percent of Ghosn's long-term incentives depend on electric-vehicle sales (shareholder return, free cash flow and alliance platform transition, another new category, make up the rest). An increase of 5 percent over internal forecasts will earn him the full 30 percent, but if sales meet targets, he will get only 21 percent." "last year the company sold 36,000 all-electric vehicles, including about 32,000 Zoe compact hatchbacks (the remainder were almost all Kangoo small vans). That was an increase of about 10,000 from 2016."   HOW BIG WILL THE BATTERY BOOM GET? TRY $548 BILLION, BNEF SAYS "Batteries will attract $548 billion in investments by 2050 as costs fall and homes and businesses push to use more clean energy" according to Mark Chediak at Bloomberg.com: "That’s one of the conclusions of the New Energy Outlook released Tuesday by analysts at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Batteries will become increasingly viable on the grid as demand for electric cars spurs manufacturing of lithium-ion systems, driving down prices. Batteries will allow more solar and wind to meet demand -- even when the sun isn’t shining or wind isn’t blowing, helping end the era of fossil fuel dominance on the grid by mid-century, BNEF said. Battery prices are expected to fall to $70 a kilowatt-hour by 2030, down 67 percent from today, according to the report. BNEF expects 1,288 gigawatts of new batteries to be commissioned by 2050."   SMART CHARGING COULD DELIVER EVS A DECADE EARLIER "Smart charging of electric vehicles (EVs) could cut the cost of integration into the UK power system by over £1 billion compared to standard charging, according to a new report that also found running an EV could be ten times cheaper than a conventional car." on CurrentNews.co.uk: "On top of the financial advantages to grid operators, Vivid Economics also argues such action would have a direct benefit to consumers, who could save substantial amounts on their annual car bill." The report says: "“The smartness of the transition to electric vehicles will be the main factor determining how cost effective the transition is, not the speed of the transition" One the big unknowns when it comes to modelling the grid is how much we'll be using Vehicle 2 Grid on our EVs.   OFF GRID ENERGY CEO HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF BATTERY STORAGE Danny Jones is the founder and CEO of Off Grid Energy and has stressed the importance of battery storage and smart charging systems as the take up of electric vehicles. He says: "The benefits of deploying these systems are manifold and are absolutely necessary to prevent a delay in EV deployment because of the cost and lead-in times to reinforce the electricity network at substations, not to mention they can start working right away with minimal installation time needed."   CHRISTCHURCH AIRPORT LEADING THE CHARGE TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Christchurch Airport is the first business in the South Island to sign up to a global initiative, EV100, committing to transitioning its vehicle fleet to 100% electric." "The airport already has eight electric vehicles (EVs) so its fleet is currently 40% electric. It also hosts Yoogo an EV sharing scheme for community use. EV100 is an initiative of The Climate Group, an international not-for-profit based in London, New Delhi and New York, with the mission of accelerating climate action. EV100 members commit to becoming 100% electric by 2030."     COMMUNITY Youtube comments. Tervitused Viljandist!

Meil on seekord 2 külalist. Alustuseks räägime järgmisel nädalal algavast Viljandi komöödiafilmide festivalist Wilkom. Festivali juht Ando Kiviberg annab ülevaate, mida põnevat kindlasti vaatama peaks. Ühtlasi anname teada, et Filmikägu nr. 49 läheb 5. mail otse-eetrisse samuti Viljandist. Tulge otsige meid üles :).  Teine külaline on dokumentalist Heilika Pikkov ja temaga räägime järgmisel nädalal kinno jõudvast lühidokumentaalide kogumikust "Juured", mis on ühtlasi järgmine teos EV100 filmiprogrammist.  Uudiseid jagub seetõttu vaid Uncut versiooni. Ja siis on muidugi sel nädalal kinos üks "väike" Marveli film nimega "Tasujad: Igaviku sõda" ja kellele kohe üldse lükras ringi jooksvad koomiksikangelased ei imponeeri, võib minna vaadata, kuidas habetunud Joaquin Phoenix filmis "Sind polnud kunagi siin" haamriga karistust jagab.

EV100 filmiprogrammi avab Moonika Siimetsa "Seltsimees laps".

41. Filmikägu pakub ülevaate EV100 filmiprogrammi raames kinodesse jõudvatest filmidest, millest esimene on juba 23. märtsil esilinastuv "Seltsimees laps".

Meie vestlus leidis aset Eesti Vabariigi 100. aastapäeval 24. veebruaril 2018, vaid mõni tund enne San Francisco lahe piirkonna eestlaste pidulikku koosviibimist
Sunnyvale’is Californias.
