Sauté the chopped onion until it turns light and translucent. Add the spinach to the pan and cook until wilted (about 10 minutes). You might need to add the spinach in two batches. Cook until excess water evaporates. Season with turmeric, salt, and pepper. Create small wells in the spinach using a spoon and crack the eggs into these wells. Cover the pan and cook for a few minutes until the eggs reach your desired doneness. Serve the Persian Spinach and Eggs on its own or with some bread (such as lavash, barbari, Turkish pide, or pita bread). In a big world, we might feel a little lost in the mix, like there's nothing really special about us. But much like a chef skillfully combines ingredients to create the perfect recipe, God uses challenges, experiences, and talents to give us all a one-of-a-kind design. This week, Food Network personality and author Aarti Sequeira shares how cooking as a hobby turned into a sacred place for her, and how the conversations she would have with God in the kitchen led to a deep and meaningful relationship with Him, and with others who came to dine at her table. Chef Darnell Ferguson came from a place in the inner city where he couldn't find much to believe in—much less himself. It took a special teacher to see the spark of talent he had, and though he would continue to struggle with feeling forgotten and alone, an encounter with God at church turned his world around. After we hear Aarti's and Darnell's stories, be sure to stay with us until the end of the show for a special reading from Reba McEntire herself, straight from her new audiobook, Not That Fancy.    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Melissa d'Arabian Upcoming interview: Nicole Avant Reba McEntire Not That Fancy Operation Christmas Child   Aarti Sequeira Mumbai  Dubai  Gulf War  Larry King Live Suzanne Goen Aarti Paarti Food Network Star www.aartisequeira.com Unwind   Darnell Ferguson Emeril Live Superchef Family Cookbook   Interview Quotes: “Growing up in Dubai, I was like, well, I'm not Arab, I'm not English, I've always felt like I don't quite fit in here. But the beautiful thing about that is that I think it put in me this heart of wanting to connect with people, finding something in common with them so that we could feel connected.” - Aarti Sequeira “I started to feel really worthless because my identity was so wrapped up in achieving professionally and being a journalist. Once that was taken away from me, who even was I anymore? I felt like a failure.” - Aarti Sequeira  “I felt like God would teach me and meet me in the slicing of the vegetables, the sizzling of the garlic and those things. He would just remind me, ‘I am Creator and you are made in my image, and so when you are cooking, this is you acting out of Me.'” - Aarti Sequeira “When I cooked, the kitchen became this place of real sanctuary for me, a place where the chaos of my life could turn into order, where I could take a mess of ingredients and turn them into something beautiful, nourishing, helpful, purposeful. It really sort of took me over.” - Aarti Sequeira  “I want people to recognize that when they are in any way impressed by anything I'm saying or doing or cooking or creating, it's not me. If you knew who I was before the Lord took me, I was unremarkable.” - Aarti Sequeira   “The very basic nature of sitting elbow to elbow with someone and talking to them face to face is something that our soul is actually aching for.” - Aarti Sequeira  “I feel so, so grateful that I have this filter of Jesus through which I look at the whole world. I look at every person through it, and I just have so much compassion for people because of that.” - Aarti Sequeira  “I had to learn the hard way. And it also made me understand how much I need forgiveness, how much I need grace, because I know where I came from and I know where a lot of people are at today.” - Darnell Ferguson  “If you can attach yourself to the truth about what God says about who you are, it will change your entire life. Hooray! We are celebrating the 100th episode of the Jesus Storybook Bible Podcast, and while we can't believe we're already at this milestone, we're honored to share the celebrations with a special guest host today, our friend, Ellie Holcomb. Ellie walks with us down memory lane as we visit some powerful episodes with guests who speak to God's never stopping, never giving up, unbreaking, always and forever love; including Amy Grant, Bishop Michael Curry, Jodi Benson, Michelle Hord, Aarti Sequeira, and the late and beloved pastor and writer, Tim Keller.    Quotes “Isn't it so beautiful to learn and to rest in the knowledge that we are all part of God's story?”  – Ellie Holcomb “When I walk into a situation and I want to be a part of it, I ask, ‘What do I already have?' I want to share what I have and I want to share it in a way of believing that a little bit can go a super long way in God's hands.” – Amy Grant  “Love makes room and space for others to be. Because that's what love does.” – Bishop Michael Curry “This verse just spoke to my heart and spirit, and I truly believe it was God throwing me a lifeline: Job 13:15, ‘Though He slay me, yet will, I trust Him.' This verse became a battle cry for me.” – Michelle Hord “What I always wanted was that my relationship with God would be so real that it would just leak out of me… I think God has done that. I can't talk about hardly anything without talking about what God thinks about it.” – Aarti Sequeira  “God can do extraordinary things through ordinary people who obey Him. If you can walk in obedience in something that's terribly uncomfortable, then let Him take it from there.” – Jodi Benson “If you are a Christian, you know that your relationship with God is impossible unless God forgives you. He doesn't make you repay your debt because your debt is far more than you could pay. And it's also true that if you do know you're forgiven by God, then you turn to other people who owe you, who have wronged you, and you're able to forgive them.” – Tim Keller   Guest's Links Ellie Holcomb's Facebook Ellie Holcomb's Instagram Ellie Holcomb's Twitter Ellie Holcomb's Website   Resources Mentioned in This Episode Amy Grant's Episode Part 1 Amy Grant's Episode Part 2  Bishop Michael Curry's Episode Jodi Benson's Episode Aarti Sequeira's Episode Michelle Hord's Episode Tim Keller's Episode   Connect with Sally Lloyd-Jones Jesus Storybook Bible Facebook Jesus Storybook Bible Instagram  Sally's website Sally's Facebook Sally's Instagram   *Episode produced by Four Eyes Media*

Aarti is married to Brendan and together they have two daughters, Eliyah and Moses. They recently moved to Raleigh, NC after living in LA for two decades. Y’all, this was a really special episode and Aarti has a WORD for us. In today’s episode, Aarti talks about how growing up in Dubai during the Gulf War sparked a deep passion for news and journalism. She eventually got a job at CNN and although it was her dream on paper, she always felt like something didn’t fit. Aarti ended up moving across the country, and through a long season waiting for another job opportunity, she found comfort in cooking AND later accepted Christ as her personal Savior. How amazing is it that God truly meets us in any season? Postpartum depression is a serious illness and we need to talk about it. In fact research shows nearly 20% of women suffer some form of PPD in the US alone. Now a new documentary aims to bring this diagnosis out of the darkness, and into the light to let women know they are not alone. In this episode I talked with Lindsay Gerszt, one of the producers of When The Bough Breaks: A Documentary About Postpartum Depression. It's narrated by Brooke Sheilds who had a very public battle with PPD herself. The film follows Lindsay's experience with postpartum and we meet several women who have experience PPD in varying degrees. I say this in the podcast and I'll write it here: This is a powerful movie for new moms. I can't tell you how many women I know who say they experienced some form of postpartum depression after the birth of their child.  It's a very real mental health issue that needs to be taken as seriously as a cancer diagnosis.  And Lindsay says that's the goal of this film. I was very moved by this film. The women sharing their stories are so raw, and unfiltered. I never experienced PPD but after seeing this my heart goes out to women who have. And you can bet I will be more vigilant in watching for signs of it with my friends.  This movie explores everything from the "baby blues" to infanticide, where a parent takes their own child's life within the first year. Several women give their accounts of taking their own child's life, or wanting to, while experiencing postpartum depression. This illness is that serious and needs attention. Lindsay is so courageous for telling her story. She opens up in the film about her struggle to find help through numerous treatments and medications. We follow along as she explores western, holistic, and eastern medical treatments. I'll let you watch to see how it all turns out for her. But I can tell you that some of the women in the film like celebrity moms Carnie Wilson and Aarti Sequeira talk about what happened when the "fog" lifts, and they are able to recover from their PPD. When The Bough Breaks is available now on iTunes. Please watch it and share with anyone you know who might be suffering from postpartum depression.  Also the film's producers have put together a helpful list of resources where moms can read about the signs of PPD and contact someone for help. Find out more at whentheboughbreakdsfilm.com.

Lindsay Lipton Gerszt shared her story about the difficulty she experienced after the birth of her son. Her story is highlighted in a new documentary called “When the Bough breaks- a documentary about postpartum depression”. I was able to see this documentary when it screened and can attest to the power and necessity of this film. If you’ve been listening to the podcast and hearing stories from mothers, you may be seeing that pregnancy and postpartum mood changes happen to a lot of women. Hearing their experiences is so important, so that we can really have a heartfelt understanding of moms during this time of life. I’m honored to have Lindsay here to share her story. Lindsay was born and raised in Miami, Florida.  Lindsay had the pleasure of working with, managing and doing PR for some of the biggest artists in the music industry. In 2007, she stepped back from the music industry to begin her beautiful family. It was at this stage in her life, that she came face to face with postpartum depression. She has now committed herself to raising awareness for PPD, it's many faces and the path to a healthy life and family.  Her commitment to PPD has included working on the important documentary...When The Bough Breaks-a documentary about postpartum depression, as well as fundraising, producing and telling her story, along with helping other women tell their story. This effort has become her passion.   About the Film (from the website): "When The Bough Breaks is a feature length documentary about postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. Narrated and Executive Produced by Brooke Shields, this shocking film uncovers this very public health issue which affects one in five new mothers after childbirth. The film follows Lindsay Gerszt, a mother who has been suffering from PPD for six years. Lindsay agrees to let the cameras document her and give us an in depth look at her path to recovery. We meet women who have committed infanticide and families who have lost loved ones to suicide.  Babies are dying, women aren't speaking out and the signs are being missed. When The Bough Breaks takes us on a journey to find answers and break the silence.  This film also features stories from singer Carnie Wilson, actress Tanya Newbould, celebrity chef Aarti Sequeira and Peggy Tanous of The Real Housewives of Orange County." Aarti Sequeira I’m very honored and excited to have the super awesome Aarti Sequeira on with us today. She is here to share her personal experience and journey through postpartum depression and now She has become a powerful advocate for maternal mental health. After her experience she competed in Cutthroat Kitchen, where she chose Postpartum Support International as her charity for donation, after having been helped by a PSI volunteer. As a result she has helped raise awareness of postpartum depression and the importance of maternal mental health. She is in the documentary called When the Bough Breaks- a documentary on postpartum depression and was keynote speaker at the PSI conference this summer. Aarti is well known from being on the Food Network and for two things: spinning her Indian soul into American favorites, and her laugh. Armed with both, the former CNN producer won Food Network Star, going on to host Aarti Party a cooking show that grew out of the popular blog and YouTube show shot in her kitchen with actor-director husband, Brendan McNamara. Her cookbook, Aarti Paarti ranked in the top three Indian-Middle Eastern cookbooks on Amazon, outdone only by Yotam Ottalenghi! A judge on Guy’s Grocery Games and Clash of the Grandmas, she also contributes to Unique Sweets, and competes on behalf of Postpartum Support International, the organization that helped her on the road to healing from postpartum depression. Catch her on Today Show, The Talk, Dr. Oz and her podcast, Pass the Salt. She lives in Los Angeles with Brendan and her two daughters, Eliyah and Moses. Find Aarti in these awesome places... Ep. 152- Next Food Network Star Aarti Sequeira is this week's podcast guest, but just as a warning- she and Zach spend most of the first half hour of the show talking about a Twitter war Zach got into with another food writer a week and a half ago (a topic Aarti discussed on the most recent episode of the podcast she does with her husband Brendan McNamara called Pass the Salt.)  Once they get through that, Zach asks her what music she listened to growing up in Dubai, what similarities she sees between Next Food Network Star and American Idol, and how these days food personalities are probably criticized more for selling out than musicians. Plus we talked with her about Tori Amos' aura, and the awesomeness of Guy Fieri.

She's a TV personality, a chef extraordinaire, mom to a gorgeous 11 month old and a ray of sunshine. Newly published cookbook author, AARTI SEQUEIRA cohosts today and discusses our good/bad/funnies (Baby winks! Apologizing for your baby! Dirty Diapers in Trader Joes Parking Lots!) before diving into listener questions about: at what age do you flip carseats to forward facing (and whether that's a battle worth fighting), how much socializing a young child needs early on, and lastly a doozy of a question about becoming a surrogate. Enjoy!
