IRVIN MUCHNICK is author, most recently, of CONCUSSION INC: The End of Football As We Know It — his third book. He is a widely published journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Sports Illustrated, People, and many other major magazines and newspapers. He has been interviewed on forums as diverse as Fox News' O'Reilly Factor and National Public Radio's Fresh Air with Terry Gross. In 2007, Irv published WRESTLING BABYLON: Piledriving Tales of Drugs, Sex, Death, and Scandal – a collection of his writings on pro wrestling behind the scenes. Soon thereafter, the sensational double murder/suicide of World Wrestling Entertainment's Chris Benoit brought WRESTLING BABYLON to the attention of Congressional investigators and led to the true-crime book CHRIS & NANCY: The True Story of the Benoit Murder-Suicide and Pro Wrestling's Cocktail of Death, published in 2009. Irv's books and blog writings moved to the center of scrutiny of WWE co-founder and former chief executive Linda McMahon's unsuccessful 2010 U.S. Senate candidacy in Connecticut on the Republican ticket.Over the last four years, Irv's work has helped elevate the story of widespread traumatic brain injury and its consequences for National Football League players and other professional and amateur athletes. His reporting has identified Dr. Joseph Maroon – medical director of WWE, team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and a widely quoted NFL consultant – as being among the key figures in manipulating research that was slow to identify and take seriously evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. In the process, the $10-billion-a-year pro football industry was protected and NFL-affiliated doctors profited. The newest developments, including the suicide of retired player and NFL Players Association leader Dave Duerson, and the bargaining impasse between the NFL and the NFLPA, have increased public interest not just in the science of head injuries but also in how it is marketed by America's most popular sport, from the NFL level all the way down to the peewee leagues.Irvin Muchnick, who was assistant director of the National Writers Union from 1994 to 1997 and later a copyright litigation consultant, also is lead respondent of the landmark 2010 Supreme Court case Reed Elsevier v. Muchnick. Publishers Weekly calls the case “the central rights dispute of the digital age.” He blogs about writers' rights issues at http://freelancerights.blogspot.com.Irv can be contacted at info@muchnick.net.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
In this 3rd and final episode of "Vince McMahon's Ownership of Janel Grant, Jim dives deep aftermath of the shocking allegations against Vince McMahon, the owner of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), made by Janelle Grant.Grant, who had a meeting with McMahon in March of 2019, claims to have experienced sexual assault and trafficking during a three-year nightmare. She filed a lawsuit against McMahon, leading to a stir within the WWE and McMahon's personal camp. Both sides release statements while Grant's lawyer holds the WWE executives accountable for the abuse.Jim explores McMahon's family history in WWE, including Shane McMahon's departure from the company and the tension between Vince and Shane. It is speculated that Shane's departure may be related to his disapproval of his father's behavior, shedding a new light on the situation.Jim covers the rise in the organization of Vince McMahon's other daughter, Stephanie McMahon, who eventually became a member of the board in the company. Rumors suggest that Stephanie and her husband, Triple H (A wrestling superstar), were aware of the allegations against Vince and tried to prevent them from tearing apart the company.Allegedly, Stephanie eventually concluded that her father engaged in the actions mentioned in the current lawsuit, causing a rift between them. McMahon denies the allegations but resigns from his executive chairmanship and TKO board. We then delve into prior allegations against Vince, including the case of Nancy Argentino who is believed to have been murdered by wwe superstar Jimmy "superfly" Snuka, as well as the scandals surrounding Mel Phillips and his involvement with underage ring boys.Jim gives a deep overview of many allegations and controversies involving McMahon and the WWE, including other incidents of assault, harassment, and misconduct within the wrestling industry. Former wrestlers share their thoughts, with some defending McMahon and others remaining silent. This final episode in the McMahon saga will leave you wondering why and how this took so long to get out into the public eye. Irvin Muchnick - Justice Denied - The untold story of the death of Nancy ArgentinaThe world of professional wrestling and what goes on behind the scenes is the subject for analysis in this episode of the Opperman Report.Backgound from Trace EvidenceTwenty-three year old Nancy Argentino had left her life in Brooklyn behind to hit the road with her new boyfriend, wrestler Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. It was a whirlwind romance that would ultimately end in violence. After a violent incident involving police in January of 1983, Nancy's family begged her to stay home and avoid Snuka. Unfortunately, Nancy did not heed their advice and went back with Snuka. Just four months later in May of 1983, Nancy was rushed to a hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania where she later died as the result of head trauma. The ensuing chaos of the case is covered by Irvin's research, which he dissects with Ed to expose an almost accepted level of behaviour in the industry and the seamier side hidden behind the glitter, lycra and canvas.BookJustice Denied - The untold story of the death of Nancy ArgentinaTwitterIrvin MuchnickYoutube Wrestling BabylonGuest InfoGuest InformationThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement
Jimmy Snuka was THE ONLY superstar to be removed from the WWE Hall of Fame. This was the result of an incident that took place of May 10th of 1983. Superfly had arrived in Pennsylvania to pre record a wrestling event. His 'on the road' girlfriend Nancy Argentino, would stay behind at the motel and wait for Jimmy to return. After arriving home after the event, according to Jimmy, he tried to rouse Nancy, with no luck. he then noticed a yellow fluid coming from her nose and mouth. He would tell responding officers, that he and Nancy had been horsing around before he had left that day, and accidentally, Nancy had hit her head, but had seemed fine immediately after the incident. He would follow paramedics after they had intubated Nancy and were trying to get her to the hospital to save her life, at the hospital, his story would change, and he would say now that Nancy had done something to upset his, and he tried to remove himself from a tense situation and he had gently pushed her, and that was how she had sustained the injury.Sadly, at about 2:30am, Nancy would succumb to her injuries. After Nancys autopsy, there was red flags everywhere. But, nothing lowers a red flag quicker than Vince McMahon and a large briefcase full of money. In 2013, a reporter named Adam Clarke would release a story about the 1983 tragedy, for the 30th anniversary. And this would shine a brand new light on Superfly. This is the story of WWE superstar Jimmy Superfly Snuka.Support the showIf you're interested in receiving bonus episodes, early release dates, an everything scary sticker and ‘thank you' as well as a shout out on our regular feed! This week we are without the Brown Recluse, Art Trejo. But never fear I sent the bat signal up and Mr Jordan Olgin from the "Words R Hard" podcast is filling in. So you know what that means, we're going to be covering another riveting story from the Pro Wrestling world! The year is 1983. The WWF is still coming together and in its infancy stages under the Vince Jr regime. This is a time period BEFORE Hulkamania was Running wild on YOUUUU ...and your parents' wallets. THEE Man at the head of the table of the WWF was a Mr. Jimmy "SUPERFLY" Snuka! But ....what kept Snuka from ever being remembered in the same light as Hogan or Macho Man was the rumor/ fact that ...he KILLED his girlfriend/mistress and got away with it....Rumor has it that Vince McMahon himself paid off the police to bury this story and get his prized star off...more than once.

Today on a special episode, the guys don't cover a medical topic and only discuss an entertainment one: the rise and fall of the WWE's Vince McMahon (2:51). Even if you don't like wrestling, or actively hate it, this episode is a fascinating listen. The guys start off by discussing why professional wrestling has continued to be popular over the years and how ‘meta' commentary on wrestling has been covered by writers such as David Shoemaker. Asif then goes over the history of wrestling and discusses how the charge of wrestling being ‘fake' has been around for over 100 years. They then talk about the rise of Vince McMahon and how he changed the landscape of professional wrestling. They then discuss the recent allegations against Vince which prompted him to retire from the WWE. Finally, they discuss where the WWE is heading and the ‘Succession'-type backroom dealings in the organization. The opinions expressed are those of the hosts, and do not reflect those of any other organizations. This podcast and website represents the opinions of the hosts. We look back at a special wrestling event that took place 36 years ago as we write this, the first date on the 1986 Great American Bash tour, held on July 1, 1986 at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. The Winter Palace host was at the shot and has a couple guests to look back at the show. First up is one of the hardest working man in the podcast business, Kris Zellner (@kriszellner), co host of Between the Sheets (@BTSheetspod) , Exile on Badstreet, Cover 2 Cover and more. We go over the card, match-by-match and talk about some of the infamous stories that happened backstage. We also talk about the 1986 Bash tour as a whole, where it was successful and where it was not. We also talk about a bunch of other subjects including the logistics of watching wrestling in the 1980s, the days of tape trading, how Kris managed to find the time to do all those shows and some recommendations of classic matches to watch online. (52:18) Also on the show is Mark's high school friend Jim, who, to protect his real identity, we will call Jim K. Fabe. Jim and Mark were impressionable 16-year old wrestling fans who attended that Bash show in Philadelphia. We talk about what we remember about the show live, other wrestling shows we attended back in the 1980s, favorites then vs favorites and more. We also talk about the current problem in popular culture of separating the art from the artist, centering about Jim's teenage fandom for Jimmy Snuka and reconciling that with what we know about the death of Nancy Argentino. That branches out into the same problems effecting creators in film and tv, sports, comics and more. It was Jim's first podcast appearance and we think he did a bang up job talking a trip down memory lane.

We were all set to have some fun with the news regarding the decision regarding wrestling in Florida, but then we were hit with the news of the passing of WWE Hall Of Famer Howard "The Fink" Finkle. Howard started out as the Madison Square Garden ring announcer when the then WWF was merely a Northeastern US wrestling promotion. As Vince McMahon expanded the promotion and started to take it national, Howard became more of a national presence as the voice of the company with his familiar call of "Coming down the aisle" signifying the entrance of some of the biggest stars of the 80s & 90s, even into the 2000s. He even played an active role at times in various angles with the company. We have reached out to several former WWF/E stars to join us to talk about Howard. Greg Garard, Oscar of Men On A Mission will definitely be joining us and we hope to have some more. The announcement a few days ago by Florida governor Ron DeSantis that professional wrestling was being declared an "essentisl business" caused shock waves that reverberated around the country. It took 24 hours before word leaked out that money changed hands and the name McMahon was at the forefront of that money exchange, except the first name was NOT Vince. We'll go into the particulars of the situation in order to let you connect the dots. There have been consistent rumors over the years of Vince McMahon paying officials in various states to either get things he wanted or to keep his stars out of trouble. This week's episode of DARK SIDE OF THE RING and the companion AFTER DARK seemed to show this as the case of the death of Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka's girlfriend Nancy Argentino was examined. We will also talk about the mass releases and what the NXT roster was told. Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride tonight.

Twenty-three year old Nancy Argentino had left her life in Brooklyn behind to hit the road with her new boyfriend, wrestler Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. It was a whirlwind romance that would ultimately end in violence. After a violent incident involving police in January of 1983, Nancy's family begged her to stay home and avoid Snuka. Unfortunately, Nancy did not heed their advice and went back with Snuka. Just four months later in May of 1983, Nancy was rushed to a hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania where she later died as the result of head trauma.Snuka alleged that Nancy had fallen and hit her head, though this was contradicted by the official autopsy report and the fact that Snuka gave more than six different stories of what happened that night. Snuka walked and was not charged, though why no one could ever explain.Over the course of the next thirty years, rumors and speculation ran rampant about what may have happened. Finally, after thirty two years, Snuka was charged with murder but would never stand trial. To this day it is hotly debated, how did Nancy Argentino die and what role did Jimmy Snuka play in her death? For more information please visit: https://www.trace-evidence.comhttps://www.patreon.com/traceevidence Social Media:https://twitter.com/TraceEvPodhttps://www.instagram.com/traceevidencepod/https://www.facebook.com/groups/traceevidencepodMusic Courtesy of: "Lost Time" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Sources: https://fabwags.com/nancy-argentino-wwe-jimmy-snukas-girlfriend/ | https://www.mcall.com/news/breaking/mc-timeline-jimmy-snuka-charges-dismissed-20170103-story.html | http://whatculture.com/wwe/13-things-you-need-to-know-about-jimmy-snuka-murder-case | https://www.vocativ.com/falsestart/395847/jimmy-snukas-lies-murderer-legacy/index.html | https://www.postandcourier.com/sports/the-rise-and-fall-of-superfly-jimmy-snuka/article_2ea642fa-e02a-11e6-8040-6fd7c3a81534.html | https://deadspin.com/murder-case-against-jimmy-superfly-snuka-dismissed-1790721929 | https://www.cbsnews.com/news/jimmy-superfly-snuka-murder-case-dismissed-against-ex-wrestler-in-girlfriends-1983-death/ | https://www.complex.com/sports/2015/09/jimmy-snuka-murder-case/vince-mcmahon | https://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/breaking/84899197-132.html | https://www.ewrestlingnews.com/articles/jimmy-snuka-death-nancy-argentino | https://www.thedailybeast.com/family-begged-girl-to-dump-superfly-snuka-before-she-died | https://www.mcall.com/news/local/mc-superfly-snuka-nancy-argentino-lawyer-20150905-story.html | https://www.latimes.com/mc-full-coverage-jimmy-superfly-snuka-and-the-death-of-nancy-argentino-20150902-storygallery.html | https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/708862-wrestler-jimmy-superfly-snuka-cold-case-nancy.html | https://www.mandatory.com/wrestlezone/news/616233-vince-mcmahon-jimmy-snuka-case | https://www.syracuse.com/crime/2015/09/months_before_womans_murder_jimmy_superfly_snuka_charged_with_assault_in_cny.html

Known for his high-flying top rope action, Snuka is regarded as one of the original Superstars that vaulted professional wrestling from a standard sport to it's own entity. In recent years, Snuka's health took a turn for the worse. He suffered from stomach cancer, and an Alzheimer's-like neurodegenerative disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. Just 12 days after a Lehigh County, judge dropped third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter charges against him in the 1983 death of his ex-girlfriend, Nancy Argentino, Snuka passed away due to complications from Dementia. He was 73 years of age.
This week Danny & Mero spoke to journalist and author, Irvin Muchnick, who is one of the world's best investigative journalists. The lads spoke to Irvin about George Gibney, the former Irish Olympic Swimming coach who is at the centre of a child sex abuse scandal that has rocked irish swimming for more than three decades. Since the mid 90's Gibney has lived in the USA under a cloud of suspicion and a desire from many to have him extradited to Ireland to face charges. Irvin has also worked extensively on pro wrestling stories, most notably the story involving Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka and the death of his girlfriend Nancy Argentino. Further to this Irv has also covered the infamously tragic story of the Benoit double murder suicide which shocked the world in 2007.
Just another week in the world of wrestling with murders, shootings and strangulations. Solomonster has EVERYTHING you need to know about Jimmy Snuka being charged with the murder of Nancy Argentino, why it took 32 years for it to happen, the role Vince McMahon may have played, Snuka's Hall of Fame status and how this may impact Tamina. Plus, a TNA star arrested for domestic violence, a crazed fan shot outside the WWE Performance Center, Hulk Hogan's apology on Good Morning America and why he only made things worse for himself, RAW IS TRIPLE H IS GOD, Eva Marie's awful botch on NXT, some surprising faces in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, the 20th anniversary of the debut of WCW Monday Nitro and some of its best moments, thoughts on the PWI 500, WWE doing its own G1 Climax-style tournament, BUY OR SELL on Brock Lesnar in 2002 or Brock Lesnar today, and who was more ruthless - Vince McMahon in the 80's or Eric Bischoff in the 90's? Via TMZ Former WWF superstar "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka -- a member of the WWE Hall of Fame -- will be charged with murdering his girlfriend in an incident that happened 32 YEARS AGO. Officials in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania say the 72-year-old will be charged with 3rd degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Investigators believe Snuka killed Nancy Argentino following an attack in a motel in Allentown back in 1983. Snuka has already been arrested -- he was taken into custody at his home in NJ earlier today. He's been booked. Bail has been set at $100,000.
