IRVIN MUCHNICK is author, most recently, of CONCUSSION INC: The End of Football As We Know It — his third book. He is a widely published journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Sports Illustrated, People, and many other major magazines and newspapers. He has been interviewed on forums as diverse as Fox News' O'Reilly Factor and National Public Radio's Fresh Air with Terry Gross. In 2007, Irv published WRESTLING BABYLON: Piledriving Tales of Drugs, Sex, Death, and Scandal – a collection of his writings on pro wrestling behind the scenes. Soon thereafter, the sensational double murder/suicide of World Wrestling Entertainment's Chris Benoit brought WRESTLING BABYLON to the attention of Congressional investigators and led to the true-crime book CHRIS & NANCY: The True Story of the Benoit Murder-Suicide and Pro Wrestling's Cocktail of Death, published in 2009. Irv's books and blog writings moved to the center of scrutiny of WWE co-founder and former chief executive Linda McMahon's unsuccessful 2010 U.S. Senate candidacy in Connecticut on the Republican ticket.Over the last four years, Irv's work has helped elevate the story of widespread traumatic brain injury and its consequences for National Football League players and other professional and amateur athletes. His reporting has identified Dr. Joseph Maroon – medical director of WWE, team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and a widely quoted NFL consultant – as being among the key figures in manipulating research that was slow to identify and take seriously evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. In the process, the $10-billion-a-year pro football industry was protected and NFL-affiliated doctors profited. The newest developments, including the suicide of retired player and NFL Players Association leader Dave Duerson, and the bargaining impasse between the NFL and the NFLPA, have increased public interest not just in the science of head injuries but also in how it is marketed by America's most popular sport, from the NFL level all the way down to the peewee leagues.Irvin Muchnick, who was assistant director of the National Writers Union from 1994 to 1997 and later a copyright litigation consultant, also is lead respondent of the landmark 2010 Supreme Court case Reed Elsevier v. Muchnick. Publishers Weekly calls the case “the central rights dispute of the digital age.” He blogs about writers' rights issues at http://freelancerights.blogspot.com.Irv can be contacted at info@muchnick.net.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

This was a time when the owner of the WWF, Vince McMahon Jr. was looking to expand his promotion nationally outside of the northeast where it had historically held its matches.

Jimmy Snuka was THE ONLY superstar to be removed from the WWE Hall of Fame. This was the result of an incident that took place of May 10th of 1983. Superfly had arrived in Pennsylvania to pre record a wrestling event. His 'on the road' girlfriend Nancy Argentino, would stay behind at the motel and wait for Jimmy to return. After arriving home after the event, according to Jimmy, he tried to rouse Nancy, with no luck. he then noticed a yellow fluid coming from her nose and mouth. He would tell responding officers, that he and Nancy had been horsing around before he had left that day, and accidentally, Nancy had hit her head, but had seemed fine immediately after the incident. He would follow paramedics after they had intubated Nancy and were trying to get her to the hospital to save her life, at the hospital, his story would change, and he would say now that Nancy had done something to upset his, and he tried to remove himself from a tense situation and he had gently pushed her, and that was how she had sustained the injury.Sadly, at about 2:30am, Nancy would succumb to her injuries. After Nancys autopsy, there was red flags everywhere. But, nothing lowers a red flag quicker than Vince McMahon and a large briefcase full of money. In 2013, a reporter named Adam Clarke would release a story about the 1983 tragedy, for the 30th anniversary. And this would shine a brand new light on Superfly. This is the story of WWE superstar Jimmy Superfly Snuka.Support the showIf you're interested in receiving bonus episodes, early release dates, an everything scary sticker and ‘thank you' as well as a shout out on our regular feed! This week we are without the Brown Recluse, Art Trejo. But never fear I sent the bat signal up and Mr Jordan Olgin from the "Words R Hard" podcast is filling in. So you know what that means, we're going to be covering another riveting story from the Pro Wrestling world! The year is 1983. The WWF is still coming together and in its infancy stages under the Vince Jr regime. This is a time period BEFORE Hulkamania was Running wild on YOUUUU ...and your parents' wallets. THEE Man at the head of the table of the WWF was a Mr. Jimmy "SUPERFLY" Snuka! But ....what kept Snuka from ever being remembered in the same light as Hogan or Macho Man was the rumor/ fact that ...he KILLED his girlfriend/mistress and got away with it....Rumor has it that Vince McMahon himself paid off the police to bury this story and get his prized star off...more than once. Neil and I started Boca Raton Championship Wrestling after meeting Nelio Costa, owner and operator of Coastal Championship Wrestling. We wanted to talk about how this collaboration came to be, but we ended up talking about midget wrestling instead. Can we even say Midget Wrestling? Or is it micro wrestling? Either way, it was a big part of the industry back in the day. And still is. We learn from Nelio that he has also wrestled and who some of his biggest influencers are that helped him pave his way into the business. We share stories about the good ole' days of wrestling including stories about WWE legend Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka and why he isn't a character on the TV series - Young Rock. It's finally here; part 1 of the most requested topic in the history of Don Muraco's Magnificent Podcast! This week, The Rock sits down for an hour and a half to talk about Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. In this episode we cover Snuka's early days before wrestling, how Mr Fuji got him fired from his beer delivery job, Snuka in the AWA and why his tag team with Muraco was so short-lived, Jimmy coming to the WWF as a heel, why "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers didn't last as Snuka's manager, the big time angle where Muraco spat on Jimmy, how the Muraco vs Snuka rivalry eclipsed incumbent WWF World Champion Bob Backlund and we watch the legendary cage match from Madison Square Garden where Snuka does the big splash off the top of the cage. Elsewhere, Don talks spending time with "Maniac" Mark Lewin, where Ernie Roth went after he left the WWF, the genesis of eating meatball subs while wrestling and how a match with Tony Atlas led to him never being able to take an atomic drop properly ever again. This may not have been one of the more memorable Saturday Night's Main Events of all time, but it sure featured quite an array of talent as well as built up to Survivor Series 1989. Hulk Hogan defends his WWF Title against Ted DiBiase while the Million Dollar Man has Zeus in his corner. This would be the final appearance for "The All American Boys"; the Fabulous Rougeaus. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper is looking to go through the entire Heenan Family to get to Rick Rude. And this entire show opens up with the Macho King doing battle with Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka! Past the actual quality of the show itself, there's a lot of historical notes from this time period as well as some big stories involving a lawsuit against Dusty Rhodes, when and where Starrcade 1989 would take place, Verne Gagne and the AWA going absolutely mental, and much more!FOLLOW US ON TWITTER & INSTAGRAM: @MainEvent_MarksFOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK: facebook.com/maineventmarkspodEMAIL US AT: maineventmarkspod@gmail.comSEARCH FOR US ON YOUTUBE AT: Main Event Marks--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/appSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mainevent-marks/support Learn more about your ad choices. Andrew Anderson is not your typical meathead wrestler. He graduated St Peter's College in 1989 with a degree in Business Administration. He got his start in the wrestling world in 1997,discovered by wrestling legend Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. He trained extensively under the tutelage of Gino Caruso, Nickolai Volkoff, and the Kodiak Bear at Caruso's ECPW gym in Lake Hiawatha. His first tag team partner was Volkoff back in 1997. Anderson has a great love and respect for the wrestling greats that he watched as a child, and it's fitting that he now has earned their respect. Andrew Anderson is the first JCW heavyweight champion, a title he won back in 2000.

We were all set to have some fun with the news regarding the decision regarding wrestling in Florida, but then we were hit with the news of the passing of WWE Hall Of Famer Howard "The Fink" Finkle. Howard started out as the Madison Square Garden ring announcer when the then WWF was merely a Northeastern US wrestling promotion. As Vince McMahon expanded the promotion and started to take it national, Howard became more of a national presence as the voice of the company with his familiar call of "Coming down the aisle" signifying the entrance of some of the biggest stars of the 80s & 90s, even into the 2000s. He even played an active role at times in various angles with the company. We have reached out to several former WWF/E stars to join us to talk about Howard. Greg Garard, Oscar of Men On A Mission will definitely be joining us and we hope to have some more. The announcement a few days ago by Florida governor Ron DeSantis that professional wrestling was being declared an "essentisl business" caused shock waves that reverberated around the country. It took 24 hours before word leaked out that money changed hands and the name McMahon was at the forefront of that money exchange, except the first name was NOT Vince. We'll go into the particulars of the situation in order to let you connect the dots. There have been consistent rumors over the years of Vince McMahon paying officials in various states to either get things he wanted or to keep his stars out of trouble. This week's episode of DARK SIDE OF THE RING and the companion AFTER DARK seemed to show this as the case of the death of Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka's girlfriend Nancy Argentino was examined. We will also talk about the mass releases and what the NXT roster was told. Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride tonight.
In a land before time, when the WWF wasn't about saving animals, but about sweaty men grappling in the ultimate area, there was a legendary wrestler that could fly higher, was more illiterate and probably murdered his wife... That wrestler is none other than Jimmy Superfly Snuka. Justin Waaland of Heavy Hole joins us to discuss this large stupid man, his drug abuse and his probable homicide.

We'll analyze his performance as he gets a featured role just over a year into the WWF and just a few weeks removed from his first WWF Championship reign. We've also got plenty of our signature Watch-Along riffing as we discuss the hilarious eliminations of Big Boss Man and Sgt. Twenty-three year old Nancy Argentino had left her life in Brooklyn behind to hit the road with her new boyfriend, wrestler Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. It was a whirlwind romance that would ultimately end in violence. After a violent incident involving police in January of 1983, Nancy's family begged her to stay home and avoid Snuka. Unfortunately, Nancy did not heed their advice and went back with Snuka. Just four months later in May of 1983, Nancy was rushed to a hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania where she later died as the result of head trauma.Snuka alleged that Nancy had fallen and hit her head, though this was contradicted by the official autopsy report and the fact that Snuka gave more than six different stories of what happened that night. Snuka walked and was not charged, though why no one could ever explain.Over the course of the next thirty years, rumors and speculation ran rampant about what may have happened. Finally, after thirty two years, Snuka was charged with murder but would never stand trial. To this day it is hotly debated, how did Nancy Argentino die and what role did Jimmy Snuka play in her death? For more information please visit: https://www.trace-evidence.comhttps://www.patreon.com/traceevidence Social Media:https://twitter.com/TraceEvPodhttps://www.instagram.com/traceevidencepod/https://www.facebook.com/groups/traceevidencepodMusic Courtesy of: "Lost Time" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Sources: https://fabwags.com/nancy-argentino-wwe-jimmy-snukas-girlfriend/ | https://www.mcall.com/news/breaking/mc-timeline-jimmy-snuka-charges-dismissed-20170103-story.html | http://whatculture.com/wwe/13-things-you-need-to-know-about-jimmy-snuka-murder-case | https://www.vocativ.com/falsestart/395847/jimmy-snukas-lies-murderer-legacy/index.html | https://www.postandcourier.com/sports/the-rise-and-fall-of-superfly-jimmy-snuka/article_2ea642fa-e02a-11e6-8040-6fd7c3a81534.html | https://deadspin.com/murder-case-against-jimmy-superfly-snuka-dismissed-1790721929 | https://www.cbsnews.com/news/jimmy-superfly-snuka-murder-case-dismissed-against-ex-wrestler-in-girlfriends-1983-death/ | https://www.complex.com/sports/2015/09/jimmy-snuka-murder-case/vince-mcmahon | https://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/breaking/84899197-132.html | https://www.ewrestlingnews.com/articles/jimmy-snuka-death-nancy-argentino | https://www.thedailybeast.com/family-begged-girl-to-dump-superfly-snuka-before-she-died | https://www.mcall.com/news/local/mc-superfly-snuka-nancy-argentino-lawyer-20150905-story.html | https://www.latimes.com/mc-full-coverage-jimmy-superfly-snuka-and-the-death-of-nancy-argentino-20150902-storygallery.html | https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/708862-wrestler-jimmy-superfly-snuka-cold-case-nancy.html | https://www.mandatory.com/wrestlezone/news/616233-vince-mcmahon-jimmy-snuka-case | https://www.syracuse.com/crime/2015/09/months_before_womans_murder_jimmy_superfly_snuka_charged_with_assault_in_cny.html
Professional wrestling boomed when cable hit in the late '70s and early '80s. Shows like Georgia Championship Wrestling and Mid-South Wrestling planted dreams of glory in the heads and hearts of muscular southern boys. Ted "The Million Dollar Man" DiBiase, Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka and Billy "Superstar" Graham all had important matches in Georgia. They are among dozens of stars who took hits outside the ring. The documentary film 350 Days looks into the hard knock lives of professional wrestlers in what's known as the golden age of wrestling.
“350 Days” shows the real-life sex, drugs and rock and roll lifestyle of the pro-wrestling business in the decadent 80s. Director Fulvio Cecere spoke with 72 legends of the business who shared very candid details about what it was like to spend most of the year traveling from town to town in vans and cars with other wrestlers. They spoke about the drugs, the booze, the "ring rats," and the bust-ups of their marriages, families, and personal relationships, and Fulvio shares some of the behind-the-scenes details on what it took to get wrestlers like Bret Hart, Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, JJ Dillon, Ox Baker, Tito Santana, Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, Ted DiBiase, and the Masked Superstar to open up about their experiences. Fulvio shares some of his favorite stories from his 21 days of shooting interviews, who he wishes he could have spoken with, and what he plans to do with all the hours of extra footage that didn’t make the documentary. Good Morning Gjallarhorn Episode 029 – Gnome More Mistakes Good morning Horners! It's Lions week, or when this comes out actually game day. Ted Glover, Drew Bunting, and I get together and preview what should be a fun-fest held within US Bank Stadium as our Minnesota Vikings take on the Detroit Lions. In this episode, we talk about getting things right, like getting selected to win a gnome. We talk about no more mistakes. The Vikings, due to their own play, which has included mistakes in various aspects of the game, be it by players or by coaches, absolutely have little to no room left to make any mistakes if they wish to make the playoffs. A good example of this was the time management issue during the New Orleans Saints game. Norse Code’s Arif Hasan, asked Coach Zimmer about this. This plays into some midseason grades that Drew asks Ted and me to give. Looking ahead to the game, we talked about the impact of Detroit trading away one of their best receivers, in Golden Tate. He always used to be a thorn in the Vikings side just about every time they played the Lions. He is now gone leaving only Marvin Jones Jr and Kenny Golladay as the two only viable receivers for Matthew Stafford to throw to. Stafford has all the talent in the world but is inconsistent at times, just like our own Kirk Cousins can be, but has seemed to have pulled rabbits out of his hat when it comes to beating the Norsemen in their home stadium. Drew brings his normal bird’s eye view of the stats, and suggest that will be easily able to run against this team. It’s looking like Dalvin Cook is likely to return to play, and Latavius Murray is running well, so this could very well be the case. We are still looking forward to production from Adam Thiel and Stefon Diggs. Diggs however, has already been ruled out for the game with a rib injury he suffered while landing on the ball last week. Aldrick Robinson has stepped up and caught touchdowns just about every time he's been on the field, that will have to continue Sunday as he is expected to get more playing time. Even though the Lions traded away Golden Tate, they traded and got the week before, Damon "Snacks" Harrison to sure up their defensive line and beef up their run defense. The Vikings interior three, are going to have their hands full with that big man. This is the point where the rubber hits the road and the team must respond under the pressure. Vikings fans will be looking forward or hoping for, a convincing win just like in the old days when Dick the Bruiser and Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka were tearing it up in the ring. On the show, you have heard Drew talk about his playing days not only in football but as a rock bassist. He was part of a band called Little King, and a fan sent in a YouTube of them where you can see Drew knocking it out of the park, just like we expect the Vikings to do on Sunday. If you like loud, hard rock, hair band music, check out the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_hCzhpjBvw&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR3RQQQhdJEIP7kquCuol9hpS_OHXKTHC3ngqWae-oNYyy79kIuzMd1Wd3Q Like, subscribe, and ring that damn bell! This week Danny & Mero spoke to journalist and author, Irvin Muchnick, who is one of the world's best investigative journalists. The lads spoke to Irvin about George Gibney, the former Irish Olympic Swimming coach who is at the centre of a child sex abuse scandal that has rocked irish swimming for more than three decades. Since the mid 90's Gibney has lived in the USA under a cloud of suspicion and a desire from many to have him extradited to Ireland to face charges. Irvin has also worked extensively on pro wrestling stories, most notably the story involving Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka and the death of his girlfriend Nancy Argentino. Further to this Irv has also covered the infamously tragic story of the Benoit double murder suicide which shocked the world in 2007.
This week, the crew mourns the loss of Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka by talking about his murder case. Then, Kevin tells us about how Vince McMahon tore BOTH of his quads. And finally, our special guest Brandon tells a story that is full of so many things, I could only write down highlights: MONSTER TRUCKS! HULK HOGAN! THE YETI! Hulk may say "It's Not Hot!" whenever he touches water in the dungeon of doom, but this episode is PRETTY on fire. Also, the intro music is still temporary but it's called Addicted by The Zombie Dandies and we got it from the Free Music Archive. If you have any music you think would be better, email us at talesfromthekayfabe@gmail.com

Given enough time, even Michael Cole can be good. 2017 is going to be a strange year, friends. The Slambros Boman12L and Illa YC return for the 16th episode! As always, the dirt sheets are packed with rumors and news from both in and out the ring. We say goodbye to Jimmy Superfly Snuka. After ten years, the WWE has found Kurt Angle and will be inducting him in their Hall of Fame WrestleMania weekend. While the WWE UK Tournament showed us Michael Cole can be good on commentary, Illa YC wants to know “what happens next?” The UK belts is by far one of the best designed belts in years, but will Tyler Bate be defending that title anytime soon? RAW, like Michael Cole, showed it too can be good if a little effort is made. When WWE is not too busy editing video clips to make it appear people care for the life and times of Roman F. Reigns, they can put on a fairly decent wrestling show. Lucha Underground is on break, but rumors say it could be heading soon to Netflix. Smackdown Live continues its strong run with cage matches and logical reveals. We have recaps and more, so stay tuned. Listen to the show and follow us on Twitter at @SlamBrosPod!

This week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show features sports journalist Irvin Muchnick. In addition to many articles, he is the author of Justice Denied; Wrestling Babylon; and Concussion Inc.. He is a smart, direct, and incisive writer who is expert at locating events in the "world of sports" within their broader social context. In this installment of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Irvin and Chauncey talk about how the worlds of professional wrestling and broader American culture and life intersect, the rise of Donald Trump, Irvin's groundbreaking journalism on the Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka domestic violence-murder case, as well as the Chris Benoit tragedy. Irvin also shares some great insights about the N.F.L. concussion scandal and his new work on sexual exploitation and abuse in the USA Swimming organization. This episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show also features Chauncey talking about the hypocrite Ben Carson and how his adviser Armstrong Williams is apparently a closeted gay man who was accused of sexual harassment, and how the GOP's horrible last debate is more evidence of the ways that Fox News is Right-wing state-controlled media. At the end of this week's episode, Chauncey gets personal and gives some inside advice to the students who are protesting racism at Yale and the University of Missouri based on his background as a student activist and quick few years as a college administrator.

Kevin and Kornflake are far from Chickentown this weekend, because it's finally time for MarsCon! But worry not; right before we ran screaming from the studio, we recorded this special episode... all about 1980s WWF wrestling! It's the only era of wrestling we care about -- the era of crazy characters like the Junk Yard Dog, Hillbilly Jim, the Iron Sheik, Jimmy Superfly Snuka... and those are some of the guys we didn't even get around to mentioning. Kornflake provides a Top 4 1/2 List of her favorite wrestlers, including one guy who also appeared in our list of giants! (Now who could that be?) And along the way we uncover what may be the greatest photo in the history of everything. (Does it involve Mr. T and a rubber chicken, and they're both wearing kilts? Maybe...) Also: We learn about butterflies. Space Butterflies, specifically. (This show has a lot of range.)

This week's episode begins with the disappointment that Tim and Tom were unable to attend this year's Wrestlemania and the full intention of doing the episode about a different subject entirely before the power of Wrestlemania flat-out demands that they instead indeed talk almost exclusively about wrestling. Of course this means talking about the recent Hulk Hogan Uncensored at the Beacon Theatre that neither attended, a nearly screenplay accurate recounting of the Wrestling Buddies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XllxxslzkGU) commercial and Tim's close encounter with a Murphy bed. Also discussed in depth this week: Tom's legacy as a two-term class president in high school and his attempts at recreating a wrestling fundraiser he and Tim both attended as young children where Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka screamed at him. This episode is brought to you by MailChimp, a great service that we use ourselves. Check it out at mailchimp.com.
