Fun Fact Friday - Rangoli

It is the start of Diwali, the major festival of light celebrating the triumph of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, light over dark. It is one of the most popular celebrations for Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists. During the festival, one common decoration one might come across is rangoli. Rangoli is more than just a pretty design. It is traditionally believed to be a harbinger of luck. The tradition of creating rangoli on floors and tabletops is passed down through generations largely unchanged, but there are variations of the practice in different areas. Rangoli designs began in India, Nepal and Bangladesh. The distribution of colors has a spiritual connotation often utilizing radial symmetry and a yin yang type of even balance that is not only visually satisfying but also considered to be a symbol of luck, growth, and prosperity. Rangoli are traditionally placed at the main entrance or a courtyard as a way of extending a warm welcome to the Goddess Lakshmi The word rangoli comes from the Sanskrit word “rangavalli” for a creative expression of art by means of color. Those colors traditionally are created using colored rice, sands, flowers, or paints. Today some people incorporate other materials for embellishments such as glitter or even stickers. It is a design that is handmade and open to a lot of creative embellishments. Along with variations on the designs, there are also many names for the designs people in the west often refer to under the umbrella term “rangoli” India has many regions and many languages, so the tradition may look a little different and goes by different names such as Kolam, Mandana, Chowkpurana, Alpana, and Jhoti. Each of these is a little different springing from different regions, but generally, they are all used to mark celebrations and bring good luck. During Diwali, rangoli designs are often decorated with lit diyas making them even more stunning as they bring light and color in such beautiful balance to look upon them is a meditative experience.

Alpana ---------- Stithapragya - manogathan - all the desires of the mind are renounced. Self does not have any desires. No desires - no ambition? Not doing anything is an action! Instinctive actions show that even without desires we act Fear & attachment are also out of desires. When people suffer with a pattern - we may want to help; not to get any particular outcome. When this goes away, there are no dissipation of energies. When one has given up desires, what is the purpose of life? Stitapragya is happy within self, by self. One has realized their own swaroopa. When happiness is from within, then nothing needs to be done to 'derive'happiness. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/happilyoga/message

This week we're joined by restaurateur, TV personality, and former Master Sommelier, Alpana Singh for a talk about vulnerability. Alpana was the youngest woman to ever be awarded the title of Master Sommelier back in 2003, but with the recent scandal surrounding the Court of Master Sommeliers, she decided to relinquish her title. Will Guidara speaks with her about what drove that decision and the adversity in the wine world, the challenges she's faced throughout her career as a woman of color, and what's been keeping her levelheaded during this difficult year. The Welcome Conference has gone digital and to find out more, visit virtual.welcomeconference.com.

In an October 2020 New York Times article, Julia Moskin shared accounts of sexual harassment and assault of 21 women at the Court of Master Sommeliers Americas.  She wrote a follow up article, where the Chairman of the Court, Devon Broglie, stepped down amidst sexual misconduct allegations of his own.  Many sommeliers, wine professionals, and some Master Sommeliers were vocal about their outrage and much-needed changes.  Alpana Singh is one of them.  At 26, she became the youngest female and only South Asian to pass the rigorous Master Sommelier test.  Her impressive resume doesn’t end there.  She is the host of the Emmy-award winning TV Show “Check Please” on Chicago’s PBS station and the owner of 3 restaurants. Today, Alpana and I talk about her rocky 20+ year history with the Court, what changes are needed, why she gave up her Master Sommelier title, advice she has for younger wine professionals, and how this experience influenced her professionally and personally.Instagram: @alpanasinghWebsite: www.alpanasingh.com

Delivery startup Go Puff has just announced its acquisition of alcohol beverage retailer BevMo. While Bevmo already has an online presence and delivery service Go Puff’s network, which delivers convenience store items will make it even more opportune for people to channel their inner couch potato. Convicted wine counterfeiter Rudy Kurniawan has finished serving his federal prison sentence and is now in the custody of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Where he will end up is anybody’s guess. I appears Rudy may be just as difficult to keep track of as the bogus collectible wines he forged in the past.Jeff Siegel who writes the wine blog the Wine Curmudgeon pens a nice piece on how we have grown to accept expensive wine. How much is too much to pay for a bottle of wine that you plan to consume? Alpana Singh, a master sommelier in the U.S. has resigned her title. Esther Mobley interviews Alpana who reveals her decades long experience as a woman of color within the Court of Master Sommeliers. Bill and I discuss these items and more in this week's addition of VinoWeek. Thanks to everyone for listening. Cheers!

In this discussion, we discuss: 1. We discuss how Chaturmasa food restrictions & the 'sankalpa' some of us have taken, we mapped it to Sadhana Chatushtaya. Like for example, how not eating some food item - is it damah, titikshah or vairagya? We discuss our perspectives. 2. We then discuss what is causal body - the discussion goes on for a long time.
