Talking about poop can be taboo, and this social norm may be hurting our health. Dr. Trisha Pasricha says around 40% of people in the U.S. have bathroom issues so bad it affects their daily lives. Pasricha, a gastroenterologist, says her patients' bathroom and bowel education ends during potty training and doesn't continue into adulthood. This is why she wrote the book You've Been Pooping All Wrong. In this episode, Pasricha speaks with host Regina G. Barber about the three P's of pooping: pliability, propulsion and pelvic floor. They address whether to squat and whether certain fiber is the answer to better bathroom breaks. If you liked this episode, check out our episodes on urine myths and recurring UTIs.Interested in more health science? Most people think you need to poo every day to be healthy. You don't. In this episode, we explain how to tell if your poo is normal, the warning signs you shouldn't ignore, and the gut mistake you may be making on the toilet every day. Dr Trisha Pasricha, a leading Harvard gastroenterologist, a columnist for the Washington Post and author of the book You've Been Pooping All Wrong, explains how your poo, gut health, and disease risk are linked, and when you should see a doctor. Dr Pasricha guides us through why frequency, colour, and consistency all matter, and why there is no single “normal.” You'll learn how to spot changes that could signal disease, including early warning signs linked to cancer and long-term brain health. You'll hear simple advice you can use straight away. This includes how to recognise your normal pattern, what changes to look out for, and how to avoid the common toilet habit that may affect your gut. Are you looking at your poo every day? And, if not, what might you notice if you did?
Could your gut hold the key to preventing Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease? Researchers believe the first signs of these diseases could be digestive issues that occur years before neurologic symptoms appear. In this live Q&A, gastroenterologist and researcher Dr. Trisha Pasricha joins Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Podcast to break down the powerful connection between the gut microbiome and brain health — and what it could mean for your future. From constipation as an early signal to the power of diet in shaping gut health, this episode uncovers the science behind the gut-brain axis.
Have you ever looked in the toilet bowl and wondered, ‘Is that normal?' Well, you're not alone — and according to neurogastroenterologist Trisha Pasricha, it's time to talk about poop. Pasricha says understanding what's normal about your bowel movements isn't just a silly or squeamish conversation, but one that can be lifesaving. Digestive issues affect millions of Americans, yet many of them are scared to discuss them, even with their doctors. Meanwhile, the rate of irritable bowel syndrome or IBS has doubled since the COVID-19 pandemic, and the number of young people dying from colon cancer is rapidly increasing. On this episode, we talk with Pasricha about her new book, “You've Been Pooping All Wrong: How to Make Your Bowel Movements a Joy.” She answers our embarrassing yet universal questions — from why no one poops normally on vacation to how childhood trauma can haunt your gut today. She also digs into what researchers are learning about the gut-brain relationship and how it shapes digestion.
If you've ever wondered whether your bloating is normal, what your poop is supposed to look like, or why your stomach seems to have a mind of its own… you are definitely not the only one. This conversation is hilarious, science-backed, and packed with the answers to questions we all have but rarely ask. By the end, you'll understand your body better, feel less embarrassed about what it's doing, and finally have a practical guide to taking care of your gut instead of guessing. Today, Dr. Trisha Pasricha is here to answer every question you've been too embarrassed to ask out loud. Dr. Pasricha is a Harvard Medical School physician-scientist, a board-certified gastroenterologist, director of the Institute for Gut-Brain Research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and the longtime “Ask a Doctor” columnist for The Washington Post. She's also the author of the new book You've Been Pooping All Wrong. She's funny, brilliant, and completely unafraid to talk about the things most doctors avoid, from poop and bloating to hemorrhoids, colon cancer risk, and the surprising ways your gut influences your mood and brain. In this episode, you'll learn: -What a normal poop looks like and when you should go to a doctor -Why you're bloated and what to do about it -Why looking at your phone on the toilet dramatically increases hemorrhoid risk (and the 5‑minute rule every GI doctor follows) -The #1 mistake make that causes constipation -Why more young people are getting colon cancer, and the early warning signs of colon cancer you should never ignore -What your gut is telling you about your stress and mental health -The simple habits that support digestion, gut health, and long-term wellness This is the ultimate no shame conversation that will help you finally understand how to listen to your gut. Dr. Pasricha will change the way you think about digestion, gut health, and yes, even poop. For more resources related to today's episode, click here for the podcast episode page. Pasricha argues that happiness should not solely depend on external circumstances but can be cultivated from within. He introduces the concept of the "happiness equation," which is a framework for understanding and achieving happiness. The happiness equation, as outlined by Pasricha, consists of nine secrets or principles:1. The Three Doors: Pasricha introduces three choices we make in every situation - happiness, unhappiness, or neutrality - and encourages readers to choose happiness as often as possible.2. The Tetris Effect: Drawing inspiration from the popular video game Tetris, Pasricha explains how our brains tend to focus on patterns and advise readers to train their minds to see opportunities and positivity in everyday life.3. The Fallacy of Retirement: Pasricha challenges the notion that happiness is solely achieved through retirement or a future event and emphasizes the importance of finding fulfillment in the present moment.4. The Virtuous Circle: Pasricha explains how small, positive actions can create a positive feedback loop, increasing happiness and motivation.5. The 20-Minute Replay: This principle encourages individuals to spend 20 minutes each day engaging in an activity that brings them joy, such as reading, meditating, or pursuing a hobby.6. The Do It for 20 Days Rule: Pasricha suggests that consistently practicing a new habit for 20 days can help create lasting positive change in one's life.7. The Social Investment Principle highlights the significance of nurturing social connections and investing time in relationships with family, friends, and loved ones.8. The Five Thieves of Happiness: Pasricha identifies five common obstacles to happiness - control, conceit, consumption, coveting, and comfort - and provides strategies for overcoming them.9. The Ever Upward Theory: The final principle encourages readers to embrace a growth mindset, pursue personal growth and development, and continuously strive for improvement.Buy The Book on Amazon https://geni.us/HappinessEquationGet the summary via Blinkist https://blinkist.o6eiov.net/AoNonaBecome a Moonshot Member https://www.patreon.com/MoonshotsThroughout the book, Pasricha shares anecdotes, scientific research, and practical exercises to help readers apply these principles in their own lives.
