In this episode, Anne-Laure Le Cunff, author of Tiny Experiments: How to Live Freely in a Goal-Obsessed World, joins the show to discuss her experimental approach to goal-setting and personal growth. Anne-Laure, a neuroscience enthusiast and founder of Ness Labs, explores how shifting from traditional goal-setting to small, iterative experiments can lead to greater fulfillment and personal discovery. In this conversation, we explore: • The Flaws of Traditional Goal Setting: Anne-Laure explains why linear goal-setting, with its rigid outcomes and assumptions, often leads to burnout and disappointment, and how this approach can be replaced with more flexible experimentation. • The Power of Small Experiments: We dive into how small, manageable experiments allow you to explore your curiosity without the pressure of fixed outcomes and why this method encourages learning and growth rather than focusing solely on achieving goals. • Reimagining Success and Failure: Anne-Laure discusses how adopting an experimental mindset allows you to redefine success and embrace failure as a crucial part of the learning process. • Shifting from Kronos to Kairos: Anne-Laure introduces the concept of Kairos, or qualitative time, and how it contrasts with the rigid, quantitative time-focused mindset (Kronos) that often fuels productivity anxiety. • Practical Tips for Conducting Tiny Experiments: We discuss how to start small with experiments—whether it's trying out new routines or learning new skills—and how to evaluate and adjust based on your results. Anne-Laure's fresh perspective offers a way to navigate the pressures of a goal-obsessed world with curiosity, flexibility, and a willingness to embrace the unknown. Her approach empowers you to live intentionally without the rigid constraints of traditional goal-setting. Learn more about Anne-Laure and her book Tiny Experiments at TinyExperiments.org. In this reflective New Year's Eve episode, we cast the spotlight on effective goal-setting strategies, shaking up the old with a novel twist—championing "STUPID" goals over the traditional SMART goals. The hosts dissect the merits of frequent reviews, urging listeners to set goals on monthly or even weekly schedules to prevent slippage. Jennifer shares her plans for better time management and self-care, while Patricia plots the start of new ventures, exemplifying the proactive approach we champion. Amidst the business talk, expect engaging conversations on the role of trust, with Jennifer offering personal insights from her life experiences, including a candid discussion on trust dynamics post-divorce. The hosts touch on how a "12 week year" goal setting can bring structure and urgency, and there's a nod to Jennifer's participation in a Joint Venture directory, enhancing networking opportunities for you, our loyal listeners. As we blend insightful business advice with light-hearted New Year traditions, including countdowns and ball drops across time zones, our hosts reflect on the year's learnings and express hope for success in the coming months. So, settle in as we bid farewell to the old year and eagerly anticipate the new, all while keeping an eye on the bottom line that truly matters. Happy New Year! Bios: On the "It's the Bottom Line That Matters" podcast, three insightful hosts come together to explore professional & personal success, offering wisdom and humor on a variety of topics. Daniel McCraine, a pragmatic host, shares his expertise in business strategy and goal setting. He draws from personal experiences, like the lesson learned from considering the purchase of a dry cleaning business, to illuminate the differences between running a business and self-employment. His focus is on maintaining alignment with business missions and core activities, while cleverly avoiding distractions such as the alluring "shiny object syndrome." Daniel's approach emphasizes setting realistic goals within one's control, promoting business relationship nurturing as a key strategy. Jennifer Glass brings passion and energy to the podcast, advocating for unconventional goal-setting approaches. She challenges her audience to embrace "stupid" goals over traditional SMART goals, fostering a mindset of bold aspirations. Beyond goal setting, Jennifer emphasizes the necessity of action & accountability, sharing personal goals of improved time management & self-care to prevent burnout. Her personal anecdotes, including reflections on trust derived from her divorce, add depth, bringing both professional advice & personal growth stories to the table. She also provides listeners with free resources, such as a useful Joint Venture directory link, showcasing her commitment to community success. Patricia Reszetylo infuses the podcast with entrepreneurial spirit, sharing her aspirations to start new businesses & secure positive cash flow ventures in the coming year. Her methodical approach includes setting up weekly reminders to evaluate & adjust goals, customized to individual needs. Patricia values reflection through her practice of questioning what worked, what didn't, & what needs to change. Her laid-back personal tradition of sleeping before midnight on New Year's Eve represents her practical yet optimistic view on goal achievement and life balance. Together, Daniel, Jennifer, & Patricia form a dynamic trio, each contributing unique experiences and perspectives on achieving success, cultivating both professional acumen & personal growth as they prepare to welcome a fresh start with the New Year. In this week's episode, we identify five common business mistakes that could be hindering the growth and enjoyment of your business. As an independent expert — whether you're a solopreneur, coach, speaker, or consultant — these insights might be just what you need to pivot from feeling stuck to building a profitable, fulfilling business that complements your lifestyle. From worrying about the 'how' before clarifying the 'what', to getting caught up in daily struggles and forgetting the long-term game, we'll explore practical strategies to overcome these hurdles. Plus, I'll share details on our upcoming webinar series and the Business Accelerator programme designed to offer you personalised support and accountability. Ready to redefine success and build a business you truly love? Let's get started! Key Takeaways: Mistake 1: Worrying About the How Before the What Focus on defining what you want your business to accomplish and why, before getting bogged down by the how. Mistake 2: Getting Caught Up in Today and Forgetting the Long Game Remember that building a sustainable business requires a long-term perspective; don't get discouraged by short-term challenges. Mistake 3: Copying Other People's Business Models Develop an intentional business model that aligns with your unique skills, values, and lifestyle. Mistake 4: Selling Yourself Short Value your expertise and don't be afraid to charge what you're worth. Mistake 5: Waiting for Perfect Clarity Before Taking Action Embrace imperfection and take action; clarity often comes through the process of doing. In the second part of our mini-series exploring the concept of value in academic medicine, Dr. Ankur Kalra once again engages in a compelling discussion with Dr. Nandan Anavekar. Dr Anavekar, a Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and consultant for both the Cardiovascular and Radiology Departments at Mayo Clinic, also serves as the Program Director for the Adult Cardiovascular Diseases Fellowship program. In this stimulating and thought-provoking episode, Dr. Kalra and Dr. Anavekar delve into the topic of measuring success in medicine. Dr. Anavekar puts forward the argument that the ambiguous definition of academic achievement often results in damaging biases that have long-term repercussions on the medical field. As a program director, Dr. Anavekar believes that the number of published articles should not be the only or most crucial criterion for evaluating early-career faculty. He argues that it's important to also consider the "distance travelled" by candidates. Dr. Kalra raises pertinent questions about the practical implications of this approach, and Dr. Anavekar provides candid insights into his responsibilities. The conversation also sheds light on the "publish or perish" mentality and highlights the need to prioritize patient needs over the ideals of the experts treating them. Can we move beyond binary thinking when it comes to measuring success in medicine? How does Dr. Anavekar tackle research questions? What is the true essence of being "academic"? Questions and comments can be sent to “podcast@radcliffe-group.com” and may be answered by Ankur in the next episode. Guest: @nandananavekar, host: @AnkurKalraMD and produced by: @RadcliffeCARDIO.
Way too many people (especially women) are addicted to being busy. The thing is, this is how most of us were brought up. Do more, work harder, be more. Keep going no matter what. If you're busy “doing,” you'll be fine. Go to the gym, do side projects, and meet friends for happy hour. Keep stepping up, achieving, and doing ALL the things (plus more). And whatever you do … DON'T STOP! Remember that time you booked a “relaxing” vacation? The kind of vacation where you had nothing to do but lounge on the beach and relax. But 2 days in, the edgy uneasiness crept in. And by day 3 you were climbing the walls. Thank god for the piña coladas or you never would've survived! You learned your lesson. From that point on, even your vacations were jam-packed with things to do. Then, in 2020 the pandemic hit, and everything shut down. If you were lucky, you still had work. But everything else you used to do with your time was off the table. And you were forced to sit in the edgy uneasiness that comes with having nothing to do. Nobody knew what would come next. The rules and roadmap to what you're “supposed to do” were gone. And each person had a choice. You could wallow in the uneasiness, drink more, slide into depression, and let the anxiety overtake you. Or you could “let go” of the old way, reimagine a new better-for-you way, and take the steps to make it a reality. With or without a pandemic, this is how you create empowering, perfect-for-you careers and lives. And as a Career Empowerment Coach, it's why I love talking to people like Dora Fang. She created a whole new way of life for herself, living outside the boundaries of what we're “supposed to do.” She went from building strategic partnerships, creating new markets, and catalyzing growth at big companies to traveling full-time in a Winnebago Navion motorhome with her black lab, Tessa. She started an outdoor adventure business in her 20s, before going to graduate school. She loves figuring out new businesses, industries, and ecosystems (she's worked in 6 so far, including medical devices, automotive, renewable energy, and e-commerce). Starting in 2020, she downshifted, fatFIRE'd, and is focused on enjoying adventure/nature and experiencing/learning new things. Dora's focus on helping women achieve self-sufficiency and self-confidence began freshman year in college while volunteering at the local battered women's shelter. Recently in San Francisco, she's helped with shelter operations and events for the Asian Women's Shelter, along with grocery delivery for the local food bank. She was also on the Asian Women's Shelter 25th Anniversary Steering Committee and a shelter volunteer/advocate. While living in Park City, Utah, she served on the Board of Peace House and as liaison to the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition. She also volunteered as a Victim Advocate for the Park City Police and Summit County Sheriff. She is often active with alumni groups, having served as Co-President of the Dartmouth Club of Utah, long-time member of Duke University's Alumni Admissions Advisory Committee, and Young Alumnae President for Chi Omega in Washington DC. She is also a leader within Burning Man crews in California and Utah, having served as a board member of Airpusher Collective and its inimitable airship and treasurer/petrol lead for Cosmiquarium Village. Dora earned her undergraduate degree at Duke University in Public Policy and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. She is a California-certified Domestic Violence Counselor and fluent in Mandarin Chinese. In 2021, Dora moved out of San Francisco, CA into a Winnebago Navion motorhome to travel full-time with her sweet rescue pup, a 9(ish) year old black lab mix named Tessa.

It's an extra long episode but an extra special one at that, well worth a listen. Today I speak with Dr. Ruth Gotian - author of the recently published book, The Success Factor, a fascinating read that explores how we might understand and learn from the mindset and skill set of peak performers, from Nobel Prize winners and astronauts to Olympic champions and political change-makers. The Chief Learning Officer and Assistant Professor of Education in Anesthesiology, and former Assistant Dean of Mentoring and Executive Director of the Mentoring Academy at Weill Cornell Medicine, Ruth has made her name in management thinking and was hailed by the journal Nature and Columbia University as an expert in mentorship and leadership development. Selected as one of 30 people worldwide to be named to the Thinkers50 Radar List in 2021, Ruth was also a semi-finalist for the Forbes 50 Over 50 list, and recently won the Thinkers50 Distinguished Achievement, Radar Award given to a “thinker with the potential to change the world of theory and practice”. A regular contributor to Forbes, Psychology Today and Harvard Business Review, Ruth's work has been widely published in academic journals, and her take on what pro-social success can look like in a rapidly changing world is what drew me to speak with her on the show today. Recorded 9th February 2022.
Welcome to episode 12 of series 3, where we're discussing what success and achievement look like, particularly for people who identify as women. We break down what society says women need to have to "have it all" and discuss our experience of what having it all does to you on an individual basis. We talk about how the disproportionate care and domestic workload that women are expected to shoulder creates an environment that is incompatible for women to achieve substantive career goals and why continuing to hold us to this "traditional" standard is so damaging. Bodily and individual autonomy are at the core of this discussion and breaking free of historical expectations of what women are supposed to be is the only way to secure this for the girls and women who come after us.- Please check out our "Feminism 101" suggested reading list here if you're at a loose end for a great read from a Feminist author.- Find out more about the amazing artists, Nubefy, behind the graphics we use here.
