Two genuinely ridiculous things crossed Hawk's desk today, and they rhyme. First, The Atlantic reports that with his approval parked in the low thirties, the president sat his advisors down to figure out how to spend a roughly $400 million super PAC war chest, and the master plan they landed on is more of himself. The diagnosis from his own team is that voters just haven't been properly introduced to his accomplishments yet, which is a bold thing to say about the most photographed man alive. The cure is ads. About him. Problem solved. Then there's the convention. Parties hold conventions in presidential years. Everybody knows this except, apparently, the people planning a two night Trump convention in Dallas on September 9th and 10th, keynote speaker both nights, him. It lands on NFL opening night, which is a fight with the NFL that the NFL does not know it is in and will win anyway. And the cover charge is the punchline: House candidates reportedly pay their own super PAC to walk in, tiered all the way up to a six figure package Hawk reads out with the delight it deserves. His take, more or less: if you were trying to lose on purpose, it would look a lot like this. The Downballot ran the numbers on 110 special elections since January 2025. Democrats are outrunning Kamala Harris's 2024 margins by 12.5 points on average and Joe Biden's 2020 numbers by 8.4. That implies a roughly 12 point environment in House and Senate races, slightly better than what the same measure showed heading into 2018, when Democrats gained 40 House seats. Brandon Dukes just flipped Pennsylvania's 12th, the 31st legislative flip of the cycle. Democrats have won every one. Ron Brownstein's piece for CNN gets at the other half. The risk to Republicans is subtraction rather than addition: low propensity Trump voters who turn out only when his name is on the ballot, and it will not be on one again. Meanwhile Democratic primary turnout is hitting numbers not seen in decades. Nearly 800,000 in Wisconsin, 1.5 million in Michigan, surges in Texas and Georgia. In Alaska's primary, Mary Peltola outpolled Dan Sullivan by four points. James Talarico's numbers in Texas are worth a look too. Gas prices at an August high, groceries up sharply, a one bedroom in San Francisco averaging 4,000 dollars a month, and Maggie Haberman's reporting that a large share of the president's attention is going to White House renovations. Approval sits around 32 percent. Hawk's frustration is not reserved for one side: with less than 90 days to the midterms, he watches voters who agree on nearly everything tear each other apart over primaries they lost, and says he feels more politically homeless than at any point in his adult life. Several respected polls, Quinnipiac and AP among them, now put Trump's approval rating in the low thirties, with one at 30 percent. Some of those figures sit below where he was after January 6th. He is an anchor on Republican candidates while endorsing people like Ken Paxton. Shawn Ryan and Megyn Kelly have both gone public with their disillusionment over the second term, the self enrichment, the Epstein files, Todd Blanche, Pam Bondi, and the economy. Hawk raises the obvious question about whether that shift is sincere or audience management, and points to how little of it reaches right wing media consumers. There is also the simplest explanation for why Trump wants Republicans to hold the House and Senate. Not legislation.
