The continuing decline of institutional trust represents a seismic shift in our culture and society today. Some of that distrust is warranted. In season one, we looked at the credibility crisis facing the church on several fronts. We've considered the rot that's in the church—rot that needs to be removed. But some of our institutional distrust comes from an overly idealistic expectation of what institutions can provide, and from the acids seeping into all areas of our culture, slowly dissolving the structures of the past. On this episode of Reconstructing Faith, join Trevin Wax as he asks the question: how do we rebuild in the aftermath of so much institutional turmoil and destruction? This week, I speak with a Jodie of Palestine Action – a UK-based network of activists using sustained direct action to shut down businesses profiting off of the violent oppression of Palestinians. They've already shut down two facilities owned and operated by Elbit Systems, and their tireless work has led to the cancellation of 280 million worth of British military contracts with Israel. Jodie paints a vivid picture of what it looks like to engage in direct action. We break down the meaning of direct action and how it differs from participating in protests. We discuss what this has looked like for Palestine Action, from lock-ons to large-scale property damage used to shut down facilities by making these blood-soaked capitalist enterprises untenable & unprofitable. Elbit Systems is Israel's largest weapons provider. They produce the drones that monitor and attack Palestinians as well as technology for the apartheid wall. This Israeli company advertises its products as “battle tested” because they've been used extensively against a captive Palestinian population. It uses Gaza as a “weapons testing lab” so that it can market and sell its products to oppressive regimes around the world. Their drones and weaponry have been used in Myanmar, Kashmir, and on the US-Mexico border wall. New episodes broadcast live on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/sotdcast The guys have divided by zero and gone through the looking glass, discussing all of the alternate universes that simply must exist. Aside from that there's the once newsworthy recap of #ChangeTheChannel, a sojourn through Fahrenheit and into Killer Instinct, who has a very topical character for this week. Tom has tales from the Murica Heartland where he's been liberating everyone, even if they didn't want it, GTA III's Chatterbox gets a thorough referencing, and Doki Doki Literature Club is explained very carefully to us by an erudite Chris. This week's focus is of course our cultural exchange between the US and Japanese versions of The Grudge - both are heavily infested with Grudges and you're gonna have to get a guy out to fix it. We discuss what we liked about both - to be honest, there isn't a lot we disliked - and this then leads onto creepy Asian Horror topics like Siren: Blood Curse, P.T. and Silent Hill Downpour. A worthwhile talk around music in horror and how it is misused leads into some closing talk of obscure PS2 titles Lifeline, Echo Night Beyond and Hungry Ghosts. What's that? You'll have to come closer, there's a Grudge in your throat. Episode 157 of the InGoal Radio Podcast, presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, features Buffalo Sabres goalie development coach Seamus Kotyk. In the feature interview, presented by Sense Arena, Kotyk provides a glimpse into a multi-dimensional role with the Sabres that includes everything from coaching the goalies playing for their American Hockey League affiliate, the Rochester Americans, to checking in on prospects in the lower levels, including some still unsigned and playing in college or junior, as well as scouting duties. Kotyk also shares some great insights into his path to the NHL, from his playing days in junior, minor pro and Europe, to working as a goalie coach and assistant coach in the Ontario Hockey League before getting the job in Buffalo. Add in some laughs over a unique between-periods ritual from his playing days, and this is another can't miss interview loaded with great advice for both aspiring young goalies wondering what a scout is looking for, and coaches hoping to follow his path. All that, plus a return trip to The Hockey Shop Source for Sports for a(nother) look at the new Warrior Ritual neck protector, which is finally in stock and the closest thing we've seen at retail to the old pro-favourite Maltese model, but this time we add a Jackass element to the testing process with Cam. Sledgehammers, baseball bats, headphones and dance shoes are proving to be just what the doctor ordered to help stressed South Africans blow off steam. With frustration levels pushed to the limit by the Covid-19 lockdown, a tanking economy, growing unemployment and personal battles, knocking the blues out of discarded electronic equipment seem to lift the mood for high end financial business executives to emotionally exhausted parents alike. To create safe de-stress spaces, SA entrepreneurs have scoured the globe. That search has seen an explosion of Secret Sunrise dance gatherings, where people play music through headphones and dance in silence in public spaces, and demands for rage rooms where people smash out their frustrations on broken appliances with sledgehammers and baseball bats.

content: Oct 4, 2018 · podcast: Mar 22, 2019 Audio (MP3): 20181004 - Seven Sledgehammers Lying is the absolute worst. “No, I wasn’t drinking. What the hell are you talking about?” Telling lies. To another person. Makes them crazy. They start to question their own sanity. Someone has a pretty good idea about something and then we go and sow a row of doubt. It’s twofold. Not only are we handing them a flat out lie, we’re also giving them personal conflict. We’re insisting they stop questioning us and question themselves. Self-doubt is one of the worst things we can serve somebody. It’s a car wreck for the soul. Twisted metal and broken headlights. Sure, the fender can be bent back but it’ll never be true. It’s funny that we tell our kids that it’s not what they did that was so bad, it was that they lied about it. And then we grow up as adults and do the same thing. But on a Rushmore, monumental level. I don’t know about you guys but if someone lies to me that’s just it. … I wrote the above back in August. And then it just sat there not feeling finished. It’s all fine and good but it’s also abstract. The real stories in life aren’t. The car crash here is that I lied to somebody yesterday. A flat out lie as mentioned above. First time I can remember since I stopped drinking. I lied because I don’t like this person. I don’t trust them. Being honest gives them ammunition and I don’t like the thought of loading bullets into an unstable person’s gun. I am kind of disappointed in myself, though. Lying goes against what I believe, who I want to be. In all situations. In all dilemmas. However, I don’t feel too bad for lying to this particular person. They lie to me on the bimonthly basis, the latest just this past week. I know they lied because I looked it up. I didn’t crucify this person for it but I wanted to. I mean really wanted to. I could justify the whole situation with some notion about how spiritual truths need not apply in all situations. Cold wars and nuclear armaments. I won’t make more of a case than that because I don’t really have one. Plastic tanks and toy soldiers, peeps. Would I do it again? Tell a flat out lie? Probably not but I don’t know. Sometimes somebody shines a hot spotlight on us and shit just happens. I don’t like how I feel about lying for sure. I don’t like playing the odds that I’ll get caught. Driving fast doesn’t appeal to me anymore. I don’t want to smash up, crash up somebody’s fender. So there’s my confession. Two Jim Carrolls and a bottle of wine. #confessional #diariespodcast jimi hindrance experience · Oct 4, 2018 at 12:02 pm I was just thinking about this this morning. When someone asks me something personal, and I don’t feel like answering, I lie my head off to them about it. I mean I was “literally doing battle with pirates” so how could you dare want to know? Or even if I just think the person is stupid. No, I was using my ultra-light aircraft and just floated above all the traffic. There are other exceptions, starting with if I don’t like the person. I’ll lie. The best reply to all of these situations though is the blank stare. About 5 years ago when I first started at a job, an idiot wanted to know something. After the silence, she says, “Jim I think if you don’t want to answer something you just don’t!” Another person was present, and the second person giggled. I enjoyed that giggle. She let me know she gets me and she was on my side. The inquistor was probably too thick to know how obnoxious they were being, so it might have been all for naught but she eventually stopped asking me stuff like that. $m.wand.ajax_click=true;$m.wand.lightswitch=true; tcr! · Oct 4, 2018 at 12:43 pm “an idiot wanted to know something” … this could be title of many a book. $m.wand.ajax_click=true;$m.wand.lightswitch=true; Add a comment! The guys have divided by zero and gone through the looking glass, discussing all of the alternate universes that simply must exist. Today we are going low-tech. Sledgehammers and paint brushes low tech. Keigo Fukugaki has started his own hotel brand, BnA, which stands for Bed & Art. It’s not a platform. It’s not an online marketplace. There isn’t (yet) even a meaningful e-commerce component. BnA is a new kind of hotel that places travelers not only in hotel rooms with interesting decor, but plugs them into the local artistic community. It’s an incredibly ambitious project, but Keigo and his team have three small prototype hotels up and running, and they are in the process of building a full scale facility in Japan and already in talks about international expansion. With SaaS companies and digital marketplaces dominating the news, sometimes it's nice to know that some startups are running businesses based on concrete and lumber. It’s a fascinating interview, and I think you’ll enjoy it. Welcome to Disrupting Japan, straight talk from Japan’s most successful entrepreneurs. I'm Tim Romero and thanks for joining me. You know, more than anything else, Disrupting Japan is about introducing you to the people who are changing business in Japan. I mean, really introducing you to them. Not the banal book tour interviews you hear everywhere else, but to let you get to know the real people starting things up in Japan. People you would love to sit down and have a beer with and with whom I’m lucky enough to do just that. It’s letting you know the people behind the startups. And although Disrupting Japan is a business podcast, business is personal. Hiding behind every great startup with impressive numbers, there is an interesting story about how it got started. And hiding behind that interesting story is the story of what really happened and the real goals, and the real successes, and real disappointments. And what I love about podcasting is that it makes it so easy for you to hear when someone is telling a PR approved origin story and when someone is really speaking from the heart, when they are telling you about something that really matters to them. Well, I’ve got a great story for you today and listeners have commented that I’ve been a bit tech heavy recently, so today, we’re going to meet someone who is decidedly low tech, as in paint brushes and hammers low tech. Keigo Fukugaki has started his own hotel brand, Bed & Art, in which he tries to merge travel with supporting the local artistic community. It’s an ambitious project to be sure and as the interview progressed, I went from thinking, “This won’t work,” to, “Nah, this is way too much of a long shot to really work,” to “You know, this is just crazy and quirky enough that is just might work.” In this age of SAS, Airbnb, and middleware, sometimes it’s refreshing to find a startup that deals in concrete. But, you know, Keigo tell that story much better than I can. So let’s hear from our sponsors and get right to the interview. [pro_ad_display_adzone id="1404" info_text="Sponsored by" font_color="grey" ] [Interview] Tim: So cheers. We’re sitting here with Keigo Fukugaki of Bed & Art,
In this episode I interview Dan White. Dan has been a school counselor, a high school principal, and a school district superintendent. He is currently the superintendent of a large educational service agency. We talk mainly about decision making, specifically how not to let another person's crisis become your crisis, using the time you have to make decisions, not hitting flies with sledgehammers, making thoughtful course corrections, and much more. This is likely the first of several episodes with Dan related to the nuts and bolts of leadership in general and school leadership specifically. The book Dan mentions towards the end of the episode is Time Present, Time Past by Bill Bradley. Enjoy this interview with Dan White.

Sledgehammers were wielded on the Broadway Pier by the Board of Port Commissioners, cruise line and other officials from throughout the region on August 4 to break ground for construction of a new cruise ship terminal. With a couple of whacks, the group broke the ceremonial concrete slabs. "This marks the beginning of a project that will benefit the entire region,” said Stephen P. Cushman, Chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners. “The new terminal will allow us to welcome passengers in a grander fashion, while also growing our cruise business."
