In this episode of the Moral Imagination Podcast I speak with Fr. J. Augustine Wetta about his book Humility Rules: Saint Benedict's Twelve-Step Guide to Genuine Self-Esteem. The world teaches us to assert ourselves, to follow our passions, to speak up, talk back, “get yours,” don't let anyone stand in your way. But it doesn't really work. As Tyler Durden proclaims in Fight Club: “We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact.”In contrast to the world's and Fight Club's response (which we won't talk about), Fr. Augustine looks at the Rule of St. Benedict and his ladder of humility as a guide for real happiness and true self-esteem, which comes not from self-assertion, but from self-denial, selflessness, serving others, and not being a slave to one's own will and desires. We discuss Fr. Augustine journey from a lifeguard, surfer, and rugby player to a Benedictine monk, and some of his stories teaching high school students, and throwing himself into a rosebush. In his Rule for monks, St. Benedict explains that any progress toward holiness, happiness, and relationship with God and others must be grounded in humility. He describes humility as a ladder – with one side as the soul and the other as the body. …if we want to reach the highest summit of humility, if we desire to attain speedily that exaltation in heaven to which we climb by the humility of this present life, then by our ascending actions we must set up that ladder on which Jacob in a dream saw angels descending and ascending (Gen 28:12). Without doubt, this descent and ascent can signify only that we descend by exaltation and ascend by humility. Now the ladder erected is our life on earth, and if we humble our hearts the Lord will raise it to heaven. We may call our body and soul the sides of this ladder, into which our divine vocation has fitted the various steps of humility and discipline as we ascend. (St. John's Abbey) Fr. Augustine goes through each of the steps on the ladder of humility * Fear of God * Self-Denial * Obedience * Perseverance * Repentance * Serenity * Self-Abasement* Prudence * Silence * Dignity * Discration* Reverence The book is excellent. It is morally and spiritually serious and entertaining. I laughed out loud several times.Fr. Augustine offers apparently outlandish advice to to people struggling with anxiety, worry, and broken relationships* Don't speak up* Be someone's doormat* Don't follow your dreams* Put your worst foot forward And gives “homework” to practice each of the steps including:* Make no excuses next time you are reprimanded * Clean a toilet * Say thank you next time someone tells you something you already know * The next time you see something not done your way - leave it be if it worksIn addition to Humility Rules we discuss a number of topics including:· His book on decision making called , Pray, Think, Act: Make Better Decisions with the Desert Father· Joy cannot be grasped, but is the fruit of love and self-denial.· St. John Cassian and his writings on the eight vices – including the vice of self-esteem, and why focusing on ourselves prevents us from building good relationships and finding happiness.· Challenges of modern life, particularly the impact of digital distractions on mental health and spiritual well-being· The difference between contemporary meditation practices with traditional Catholic contemplative prayer.· The importance of cultivating an attitude of reverence and gratitude· The role of obedience in spiritual growth – and why it's probably not a good idea to throw oneself into a rosebush.· How chastity requires us to see others as persons and subjects, not objects for use· St. Benedict's rule on Silence, how silence increases mental clarity and attention to others, and the magnificent quote from Dom Paul Delatte OSB Commentary on the Rule of St. Benedict“The fundamental purpose of silence is to free the soul, to give it strength and leisure to adhere to God.It delivers us from the low tendencies of our nature and of fixing us in the good.“Biography Augustine Wetta is a monk of Saint Louis Abbey in Saint Louis Missouri. Atene 1896, Parigi 1900, Saint Louis (Missouri) 1904. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Britany Kilgore was your typical girl next door from Saint Louis Missouri. She was kind, respectful, and always played by the rules. She met and fell in love with Corey Kilgore at 18 and the couple got married at 19 then moved across the country to California to live on the marine base Corey was stationed at. It was at this base where Brittany would meet 45 year old staff sergeant, Luis Perez. On the night of April 13th, 3 days after Brittany filed for divorce against Corey, she went on a date with Luis. But this would be the last time Brittany was ever seen. Luis said that she went on the date with him and vanished but the police will later find details to the story that showed the dark and twisted double life of Luis Perez. CAROLYN SHIELD - Mary Magdalene, the Madonna and Uriel - Carolyn Shield has lived in Saint Louis Missouri most of her young life. She was raised by a devout Catholic family. She attended Catholic schools for grade, high school and college. She graduated from Maryville School of Nursing. Oncology Nursing was just beginning and she can say that she helped over a thousand souls make the journey home. It was the time when dying in the hospital was the most common thing. Now she welcomes new souls to this new life. Pediatrics and nursery is her new home and she has welcomed over a thousand little souls over 18 years. The big awakening happened over Dan Brown's book Da Vinci Code. It was Leonardo Da Vinci's two paintings the Last Supper and the Madonna on the Rocks that made her take a second look at what she had been told in school. In Da Vinci's Last Supper she has come to realize that there is a woman (Mary Magdalene) sitting next to Jesus at the table. In the Madonna on the Rocks it was Uriel the Archangel that she discovered was booted out of his fourth Archangel position by Pope Zachary at a council in Rome in 745c.e. He downgraded Uriel with seven other Archangels to Saints. In the Gospel of Barnabas, Uriel is one of the four Archangels who protect Jesus and his family throughout his life. Uriel is also the famous angel that carries the flaming sword and guards the Gate of Eden. Carolyn started reading and researching. Her quest turned to looking at the holy places she often prayed in with different eyes. I posted a You Tube video called Looking for Mary Magdalene showing my quest. Who would guess I got a email from the editor of Rhedesium asking where I got a picture of Mary Magdalene with her hands folded like the Mary Magdalene on the altar at Rennes Chateau. I didn't know at the time that Ben Hammott had discovered a corpse with a Crusader flag on it in a cave near Rennes Chateau. It wasn't till I saw the movie Bloodlines that I saw that the embalmed body also had the same folding hands. I later found out that Jean Cocteau when he was buried also had his hands folded the same way. Some people have said he was Grandmaster of the Priory of Sion. Since then I have found another painting with a pregnant Mary with the same folded hands at the Miraculous Medal Shrine at Perryville Missouri. Just by chance my father's life was saved by the Miraculous medal. A policemen shot in the hip in a gunfight of which the bullet was deflected by the medal on his key chain. This not the only incident that is special in my family with Our Lady. Each chapter of the book focuses on one topic such as managing mileage, balancing intensities, recovery, and many more. The chapters at the end contain training plans for 5k, 10k, half-marathon, marathon and ultramarathon distances. »

My grandfather was cured by Lourdes Water. - www.bepureofheart.com*** AND NOW ***The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.comThe ‘X' Zone TV Channel Radio Feed (Free - No Subscription Required) - https://www.spreaker.com/show/xztv-the-x-zone-tv-show-audio The ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewspaper.com (Free)To contact Rob McConnell - misterx@xzoneradiotv.com

We need a multicultural shift in awareness of who we are as individuals; as a people. The way we think about each other and the way we think about ourselves is what causes the entire engine of every industry, every system, and every organization to move. My grandfather was cured by Lourdes Water. - www.bepureofheart.comFor Your Listening Pleasure for these Lockdown / Stay-At-Home COVID and Variants Times - For all the radio shows available on The 'X' Zone Broadcast Network visit - https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv.Our radio shows archives and programming include: A Different Perspective with Kevin Randle; Alien Cosmic Expo Lecture Series; Alien Worlds Radio Show; America's Soul Doctor with Ken Unger; Back in Control Radio Show with Dr. David Hanscom, MD; Connecting with Coincidence with Dr. Bernard Beitman, MD; Dick Tracy; Dimension X; Exploring Tomorrow Radio Show; Flash Gordon; Imagine More Success Radio Show with Syndee Hendricks and Thomas Hydes; Jet Jungle Radio Show; Journey Into Space; Know the Name with Sharon Lynn Wyeth; Lux Radio Theatre - Classic Old Time Radio; Mission Evolution with Gwilda Wiyaka; Paranormal StakeOut with Larry Lawson; Ray Bradbury - Tales Of The Bizarre; Sci Fi Radio Show; Seek Reality with Roberta Grimes; Space Patrol; Stairway to Heaven with Gwilda Wiyaka; The 'X' Zone Radio Show with Rob McConnell; Two Good To Be True with Justina Marsh and Peter Marsh; and many other! That's The ‘X' Zone Broadcast Network Shows and Archives - https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv
