On Dec 6, 1989, Marc Lepine carried out a targeted attack on women at the Ecole Polytechnique engineering school in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The rampage resulted in 14 women losing their lives and 14 other people being wounded, while countless others were forever traumatized. This was the largest mass shooting in Canada until 2020. Thank you to Pierre Poilievre for the term! Jagmeet Singh has become a caricature of a feckless politician: is it time for him to go? Just in time for the anniversary of Ecole Polytechnique, another gun confiscation announcement. You can bet Lewis is less than impressed. Arif Virani has offered to split C-63 to get it passed, but will it see the light of day? And more!
New releases from West Africa, Vancouver, Barcelona, Italy, England, Eire, and Scotland. Plus concert previews, a memorial for the 14 women murdered at Ecole Polytechnique in 1989, a couple of Sugaree songs, and a few cuts to herald the incoming Winter and holiday season.
On December 6, 1989 a lone gunman walked into Montreal's École Polytechnique and began shooting female students. The young man was motivated by his misogynistic hatred for women. He targeted his victims because they were women.By the time his rampage was over, 14 young women lay dead.It was a tragedy that shook the nation to its core. Never before had our country seen such horrific violence targeted at young women. The Polytechnique shooting galvanized the women's movement in Canada and put a national focus specifically on violence against women.Parliament went on to create a national action plan on combating violence against women.Every year on December 6 we mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.Still, violence against women remains an epidemic in this country.Host David Smith speaks with Ecole Polytechnique survivor Nathalie Provost about her memory of that terrible day and her work advocating for stricter gun control laws in Canada. Around 5:30 on Wednesday, December 6, 1989, the Café Campus at the Université de Montréal was busy as usual. It had been a favorite spot for students and because the temperatures were below zero that day, it was a warm place for students to gather. It was the end of the semester, and for some, it had been the last day of classes before the holiday break. Suddenly the normal buzz of the café was interrupted when customers in the Café saw a tidal wave of people in a panic running down the hill towards them. It was soon discovered that a gunman was on the loose on campus and the attack.SOURCES:1) "Because They Were Women: The Montreal Massacre" by Josee Boileau2) Marc Lepine's Suicide Note

Episode 22 The Ecole Polytechnique Massacre Quebec experienced intensive social upheaval over the course of the 20th century, affecting everything from university structures to social commentary. In 1989, Quebec women were gaining more and more footholds in previously male dominated careers. And while the Ecole Polytechnique was at the forefront of female academic empowerment, one disgruntled young man was on a mission to eradicate feminism. In the span of twenty minutes, the enraged killer murdered ten women and injured several others for the crime of trying to graduate with degrees in engineering. In the aftermath of his violence, Quebec was forced to reckon with its national views on feminism, as well as its policies on firearms. I met Elisa Hategan and became familiar with her incredible story last year while researching the Anti-hate movement. Elisa is almost single-handedly responsible for taking down former Neo-Nazi hate group "Heritage Front," complete with parliamentary Testimony in 2011 that spelled the end for guys like Ernst Zundel and Grant Bristow. Elisa has been the target of hate and anti-hate groups and has an incredibly unique story. After getting out of the Heritage Front, Elisa says she has been on a 12-year journey to fight real racism and real extremism and knows how the hate sausage is made. What Elisa sees in terms of radicalization today that worked 20 years ago? The profile of those who are racially radicalized. How to reach fascists and extremists. Montreal Canadiens Goalie Carey Price stepped into the Gun Debate, turning himself into a pariah overnight. After posting his support for legal gun Owners VS the Canadian Government Bill-C21, new handgun, and assault rifle restrictions, Price was DRAGGED. He supported the Canadian Coalition For Firearms Rights lobby efforts in his IG post, and that's a problem. A week before the memorial of the mass murder of female engineering students at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal, used POLY as a promo code to give gun nuts 10% off guns and hunting paraphernalia last week. Lousy Timing or is Carey Price the muted version of Theo Fleury? Should we be advocating for the rights of responsible gun owners? We close with the video of the year of the world's worst paramedics so you can get on with your day!

In this Episode, while we pay respects and remember the victims of the Montreal Massacre 33 years ago, Frank also makes the case for Carey Price and his comments and concludes, he did nothing wrong by stating his honest thoughts. The only blame lies with the media for igniting the flame and The Habs for mishandling the entire situation.

It's been more than three decades since the killing of 14 women at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. But how much has really changed since that day, when it comes to violence against women? It's called the “King of musical instruments" for its size, complexity and power. But it's not as commonly known as piano or violin..probably because a pipe organ is not very portable. An organist tells us why the organ deserves to transcend its traditional church setting and get more attention. The NDP argues that the province's chief medical officer of health should be an independent officer of the legislature. The party is introducing a private member's bill to make the change.

It is the beginning of a new year and the perfect time to reflect on the way you lead. As you move forward into 2022, let's make sure you are thinking about being strategic in your leadership. Today Victoire de Lajudie joins Deepa to discuss - what is a strategic leader exactly and how do you keep your strategy alive throughout the year. Victoire's tips for being a strategic leader:Being a leader is being strategic. Make sure you think about your strategy before diving into a project. Leaders should: learn fast, fail fast, and have empathy. Learning includes curiosity and pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. A mission can be short–term. The most important piece is for everyone to know and stay connected to why they are working on the project. Creating a vision needs a team, it is a collective responsibility. Dream big and don't get stuck wondering “how”. Ask questions to keep your organization on track for culture change and strategy. Challenge the stories and assumptions that run your organization. Vulnerability is needed for connection and connection fuels collective work. What practices do you put into place to reflect on your goals? Do you write in your journal or have an accountability partner? Remember being a strategic leader does not end in January - keep going throughout the year. We hope you liked this episode!
