My guest today was diagnosed with ADHD and twice-exceptionality later in life. We have connected through TikTok and are learning a lot from each other. He demonstrates kind accountability in his TikTok posts and shows authenticity in his longer YouTube posts that I greatly appreciate. Join us to hear his unique perspective. Sean Szolek-Van Valkenburgh grew up in Indiana surrounded by orchestral, classical, and contemporary music. His formal musical education began at age 7 when he started studying piano and performing in choral ensembles. As his musical education progressed, he noticed that he had the unusual gift of chromesthesia. Through TikTok, Sean avidly posts about being a professional musician and artist and connects with over 680,000 followers; he refers to them as “kings, queens, and monarchs.” He hopes to provide a safe, inclusive, and entertaining platform that prioritizes genuine content creation and critical thought. Show Highlights: What is chromesthesia? Multiple senses cross in the brain, making it possible to hear music and also see it in colors, textures, and patterns How Sean uses TikTok to share music and chromesthesia Why Sean is intensely passionate about educating and helping people see the world in different ways, especially the “lightbulb” moments of learning How Sean's personal brand of intensity cuts through to the truth and presents it to people, shining light on obscure areas in the legal system As Sean grew up, he was very adamant about certain fixations, like dominoes and Jenga; his twice-exceptionality was masked by his ability to study and learn, but his ADHD was overlooked for a time How his ADHD impacted the way he planned and self-regulated himself and caused imbalance in his mental health How Sean was socially isolated with a few superficial friendships and focused on his hyperfixations How Sean had to learn in college to apply himself to social constructs The cultural factors that affected Sean as he and his sister were black twins adopted by white parents, and how this helped inform his cultural understanding How Sean had to tone himself down as a counselor at a fine arts summer camp and learn how to expend his energy in appropriate ways Why Sean depends on established routines and structures that work with his ADHD How Sean has gotten out of control on social media in exposing the truth and presenting the facts, sometimes finding it difficult to strike a balance How Sean uses his fire for good in helping people channel their fire into artistic expression in different ways How Sean harnesses the power of his intensity through self-regulation and recognizing the power behind his personality and neurodivergence How Sean recognized his twice-exceptionality How Sean has learned to take time for himself and take mental inventory with introspection Sean's advice: “Be educated and aware when you speak about ADHD. Know your abilities and disabilities. It's a long journey. Find your authentic self and work on defining yourself.” How to ask for accommodations What Sean is working on for the future Resources: Find Sean on Instagram:  @seanszolekvanvalkenburgh Find Sean on Twitter:  @SeanSzolek Find Sean on TikTok:  @seansvv

Sean helps people boost their energy so they can make positive changes in their life. His methods for helping people reach their optimal performance levels are multi-faceted.  As a biohacker and natural health enthusiast, Sean has in-depth knowledge in supplementation, diet, and exercise.  Sean also owns a chain of float centers, which are places that offer isolation tanks (a.k.a. flotation tanks). Float therapy is a powerful method for improving the way you feel and function, regardless of age. Sean explains the benefits of using a float tank for your health in this fantastic conversation with Wade.  Sean is also a Certified Life Coach and Performance Coach whose clients include professional athletes, television actors, MLS professionals, and the Luluemon corporate team. His credentials equip Sean to coach you through mindset challenges effectively.   Another tool in Sean’s biohacking toolbox is psychedelics. This podcast episode spends a significant portion of time on this topic, providing a great learning opportunity for listeners who are curious about leveraging psychedelics as a personal growth tool. Although controversial, using psychedelics can provide many health benefits, particularly on a mental and spiritual level, when done under proper guidance with an experienced shaman or practitioner who has your best interest in mind.  Wade asks all the right questions, and Sean is gracious with his time providing in-depth answers that dive into all facets of psychedelics, including spirituality.  In this podcast, we cover: The daily routines and practices Sean uses to stay positive and at peace during the pandemic Why Sean broke into the flotation therapy business and the benefits his customers get from this still novel health practice Why you should do dopamine fasts and how to do them The dangers of diving into psychedelics unprepared and not taking them seriously Sean’s experiences with ayahuasca and how this psychedelic helps people heal, experience personal growth, and expand consciousness What good is a spiritual awakening if you don’t do anything with it? How social media addictions steal the benefits of our dopamine and shift those benefits to “someone else” (like Mark Zuckerberg or Jack Dorsey) How people working in the digital space can still benefit from a “media fast”  A powerful NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) technique that rewires your brain from a nonproductive emotional state to a productive emotional state Energy is the Key to Making Positive Changes that Last It would help if you had the energy to make lasting impactful changes in your life. Yet, so many are struggling with low energy. This pandemic of lethargy has a lot to do with our modern technological society. Many people are bombarded with digital stimuli and don’t know how to get off that train. Sean talks about some of these positive changes you can make to increase your energy flow.  Things like making some changes in your environment. Are you sleeping with your Wi-Fi on? Do you keep your phone close to your head? When you wake up, is the first thing you do is look at your phone? No wonder you’re getting crappy sleep.  You should establish a quality morning routine to start your day strong. Sean spends time talking about practical things you can do to stoke your creative fires without caffeine dependence.   How do you make sure your ayahuasca retreat provides lasting change - not just a short “experience”? As Sean and Wade discuss the right mindset in using psychedelics for healing and growth, at one point, the discussion turns to what do you do after coming back from an ayahuasca retreat in Costa Rica? Because the same habits, vices, and people are waiting for you when you return home. Here is a snippet of what Sean says in this episode: “The work up to and the work on the backside of experiences is everything because your friends are still at home, your family, your habits. When you left to go do this experience (ayahuasca), seeking greater awareness and clarity, maybe healing - all your same vices, the same habits, and negative thought patterns and trigger points are all there waiting for you.  So unless you have somebody that you can work with to help navigate all that, you must have enough resolve in yourself to say, okay, I’m going to make some behavioral changes. I’m going to give up sugar. I’m going not watch so much media anymore. I’m going to be kinder to my children. Those sorts of changes are like a baseline. You can also start meditating or begin journaling and then build off of that “big experience.”  Like, what good is a spiritual awakening if you don’t do anything with it, right?”   Sean McCormick was introduced to transcendental meditation when he was 12 years old, bringing this podcast one of the most spiritual conversations Wade has ever recorded. Achieving levels of expertise in some of the most cutting-edge biohacking techniques out there today, you don’t want to miss what Sean has to share.  Check out this episode - healing and spiritual growth could be right around the corner.  Episode Resources:  http://seanmccormick.com/podcasts https://www.instagram.com/floatseattle/ https://www.youtube.com/channel https://www.linkedin.com/in/sean-mccormick-47a3b49/

What happens when you bring engineers together with landscape architects and their students to work on real coastal resilience challenges in the field? What can the disciplines of engineering and landscape architecture learn from each other? And what kinds of solutions will they produce when faced with very real coastal risk management issues following a hurricane?   In this episode, we’re talking with Rob Holmes at Auburn University, Sean Burkholder at the University of Pennsylvania, and Brian Davis at the University of Virginia. They are landscape architects who have joined forces with Engineering With Nature® to explore innovative solutions to coastal resilience. Jeff King, deputy lead of the Engineering With Nature program at the US Army Corps of Engineers, shares his excitement about bringing these disciplines together and discusses the synergies, opportunities, and potential for advancing the practice of EWN.   This partnership started in the summer of 2017; Jeff and his EWN colleagues hosted a workshop at ERDC in Vicksburg, MS, and invited Rob, Sean, Brian, and other landscape architects. Jeff recounts how that visit really set the stage for collaboration amongst these practices to advance EWN. According to Sean, “the idea that these two disciplines have been parallel for so long and actually are coming together now is a pretty exciting time for us.”   Following the initial workshop, the Galveston District, an EWN Proving Ground, hosted a workshop with students from Brian and Rob’s studios to show them the work being done to create more resilience and ecosystem restoration along the Texas coast. The timing was just after Hurricane Harvey. Jeff recounts taking the students to a house surrounded on three sides by water and their being aghast at the flooding they were seeing: “You could tell they were thinking, ‘Hey, this is real and it deserves real attention’. I just loved seeing that on their faces.”   For the students, getting out of the classroom and into actual landscapes and learning from the District experts about dealing with the fundamental aspects of flood control and risk management was, as Brian notes, “an extraordinary opportunity for the students to build on the great work of others and apply their expansive thinking as landscape architects.” Their ideas and concepts were shared with the Galveston District and, according to Jeff, were very well received. “The integration of natural features, the students’ innovation really resonated. My colleagues and I truly benefited from the novel way the landscape architects addressed some of the coastal resilience challenges we are working on.”   The shared experiences of the students and the engineers—working in the field on real and existential threats to the Gulf coast—really highlights the intersection of shared values between the practices of EWN and landscape architecture. Both focus on producing outcomes that benefit the environment and society.   The Engineering With Nature approach of leveraging natural process to accomplish the desired engineering outcome, while creating environmental and social benefits aligns well with the discipline of landscape architecture where landscapes are co-designed by humans and natural processes. Rob recalled the Army Corps’ Horseshoe Bend project featured in the first season of the EWN Podcast where the island is being “self-designed” by natural processes. “By stepping back and relinquishing some control over how the landscape is shaped, we gain landscapes that are more resilient, more functional, more ecologically healthy, and provide better opportunities for human interaction and engagement. They become better places.”   We discuss the power of combining the practices of landscape architecture in the work Sean, Rob and Jeff are doing with colleagues at the Philadelphia District along the New Jersey coast. As Sean notes, the challenges in New Jersey are vast. The area is experiencing sea level rise and habitat loss and has a population that lives quite close to the coastline. “The primary composition of that landscape is a barrier Island, and a back bay, where you get flooding from the land side and storm surge coming from the sea. We are trying to develop a series of strategies—alternative ways to look at coastal storm risk management—that could achieve cultural, social, and ecological benefits while still serving as proper coastal infrastructure.”   The synergies between landscape architecture and EWN are significant, and the possibilities for collaboration to create new, innovative solutions to coastal resilience challenges seems unlimited. According to Rob, Sean, and Brian, finding out the Corps was solving the basic problems of flooding while also trying to work with in concert with natural systems, for the benefit of society was “like a bolt of lightning for us—it was really striking and exciting!” The opportunities to learn from each other, advance their respective practices, and motivate and challenge future engineers and landscape architects, while they work together on critical coastal resilience projects, is the focus of this podcast.  We hope you enjoy it.   The EWN Program is grateful to the Dredge Research Collaborative (DRC) for their collaboration and partnership over the years and with development of this podcast. As members of the DRC, Rob Holmes, Sean Burkholder, Brian Davis, Justine Holzman and Gena Wirth have contributed greatly to the success of this EWN collaboration.   Related Links: EWN Website ERDC Website Jeff King at LinkedIn Jeff King at EWN USACE Galveston District Rob Holmes at Auburn Sean Burkholder at UPenn Brian Davis at UVA Seven Mile Island Innovation Lab Landscape Architecture on the EWN Website New Jersey Back Bays Landscape Architecture Report Sabine to Galveston Landscape Architecture Report

In this episode, I am pleased to welcome Sean Morrissey to the show. Sean began as a buy and hold real estate investor in 2003 with a two-bedroom condo in Hanover Park, IL. Having earned his Illinois real estate broker license in 2007, Sean survived the market crash and assisted homeowners throughout the Chicagoland area and opened Chicagoland Realty Group Partners LLC in 2011. Since that time, Sean has managed over 700+ rental transactions, 200+ homes, and owns and manages his own rental property portfolio in the western suburbs of the Chicagoland area. Sean focuses the majority of his time in growing and managing his real estate portfolio while hosting a podcast named Landlording for Life.   I am always so interested in how and why people get into real estate investing, so Sean started by sharing his background with us. He said he graduated from Purdue University with a BA in Restaurant Management and joined the Peace Corps where he worked in Western Kenya. When he returned home and began working in restaurant management, his dad introduced him to a book about using real estate investments as tax shelters. Sean started joining REIAs to talk to investors and landlords, and bought his first investment property in June of 2003 in the Chicagoland area.   I asked Sean to explain his experience with the Peace Corps and what led him to choose that before starting his corporate work life. He said he was involved in a student exchange program in college which got him interested in international travel and helping others. He was stationed in western Kenya at a technical college helping students work with computers and doing many community outreach projects. Sean said it was an awesome experience and he would love to go back someday soon.   I wanted Sean to explain what led him to get his broker’s license and what he considers the advantages are to do so for a real estate investor. His thought process was that he would have access to the MLS and more deals, and be a better investor. Sean said it made a lot of sense to pursue his license at that time because there was no Zillow or Redfin, which has made a lot of the property information public now. Until 2009, he was still working full-time in the restaurant business, so working more as a realtor initially helped him to figure out how he was going to transition to real estate investing full-time.   As Sean has had his own property management company in the past, we talked quite a bit about common mistakes made by investors when managing their own properties, size of portfolios, and why he sold his company. Sean’s opinion is that a newer investor should manage their own properties until they get over ten doors in their portfolio so that they understand the rigors of the job and learn from any mistakes made. He also talked a lot about what their criteria was for screening tenants, which is very helpful for those landlords who self-manage.    I asked Sean to explain why he has shifted toward an investor-centered model, rather than focusing on his brokerage work or continuing in the property management field. He went into great detail about the several ways you can benefit financially from buy and hold investing versus other types, and also the time and work investment of each.    Sean shares some of his struggles as a landlord, specifics about his business dealings, property management tactics, and so much more! You will not want to miss this fantastic, value-filled episode of the Just Start Real Estate Podcast! Dear Friends & Colleagues,On Friday March 27th 2020, I launched a limited podcast series addressing how the COVID-19 pandemic is reframing American healthcare.  You can find the introductory episode here.  In this series, I am interviewing future-facing, courageous healthcare leaders and entrepreneurs - asking two questions: (1) How is the COVID-19 pandemic immediately changing the way you are delivering healthcare?   (2) How will COVID-19 reframe American healthcare for years to come? The situation is changing rapidly. So, in order to share the remarkable insights from these interviews, as quickly as possible, I’m releasing new episodes as frequently as I can.Our guest this week is Sean Duffy - the co-founder and CEO of Omada Health, one of the leading digital healthcare companies.  I had the good fortune of meeting Sean about 8 years ago, in the early phases of Omada Health.  After a couple of hours of listening to Sean, I was completely enamored with him, his vision and mission, and with the approach he was taking.  It was, and is, breath-taking and brilliant.  Omada Health is based on solid evidence-based medicine. It’s also based on the science of behavior change - which you’ll hear more about in this interview.  I won’t go into any depth providing Sean’s background; but instead, I would urge you to listen to the first interview I posted with Sean on Nov 7, 2017 - I believe is was episode #12 of Creating a New Healthcare.   For those of you who have read my book, Reframing Healthcare, you’ll know that I quote Sean extensively in the book.  Sean and Omada Health have come a long way in the past few years.  Omada Health has come a long way in the past couple of years.  And, as you’ll hear in this interview, Omada has come a long way in the past couple of months during the COVID-19 pandemic.  There are numerous critical lessons for the future of US healthcare that emerge from this interview.  The major take home lesson for me is that chronic condition management is more - much more - than a virtual visit or a remote monitoring device.  As Sean points out, it takes a lot of finely tuned and expertly managed instruments, playing all together in sync, from the same symphonic sheet to make meaningful, beautiful and emotionally moving music.  Omada Health has taken a holistic or “whole person” approach, which includes: remote monitoring; 24/7 asynchronous “signal” collection and responsiveness; machine learning and automated responses that enhance customization and personalization of care; expert health coaching and group facilitation; the power of social community to enhance engagement and behavior change; the inclusion of behavioral health monitoring and treatment into its general chronic condition management programs; and advanced motivation and behavior change approaches that include behavioral economic and habit formation techniques.Omada Health has existed in the digital/virtual/remote realm for many years prior to the COVID-19 era.  As a result, they have a vast trove of experience delivering care in this advanced way, and they can innovate at an accelerated pace.  Another major ‘ahah’ for me during this interview was the point Sean made about the data that is being collected.  Omada Health has, for years, been collecting physiologic, emotional and behavioral signals continuously.  As a result, they’re able to, in real time, analyze and understand how the various phases of the pandemic are affecting its clients and the populations they serve.  This has allowed them to rapidly iterate and adjust their care offerings to anticipate and meet their clients’ current and evolving needs during the pandemic.  This capability will contine to serve them and their clients in the post-COVID-19 era.  One example of the “signals” they’ve been able to collect in real time is the marked increase in depression and anxiety, which they’ve  almost immediately responded to by the inclusion of more behavioral health services in their programs.  I came away from this interview with a greater appreciation for the work that Omada Health has been doing.  My hope is that healthcare systems across the country take advantage of these 'representatives from the future'; and collaborate in a way that allows us to collectively leapfrog into a more advanced system of health, that not only delivers better care but also delivers more humanistic care.   Until next time, be safe and be well.Zeev Neuwirth, MD

He recommends a book, "David and Goliath", by Malcolm Cladwell. These short stories about individuals who came from not-so-sumptuous backgrounds to become successful points out that sometimes overcoming tough circumstances can be an advantage and not a disadvantage. As Sean says, it may not have been the smartest thing to dig himself a big hole from which to climb out, but that's the way it happened and he dealt with it. The shock value of the LA County jail was what it took to turn him around, but it worked. So what's been happening? In Episode 89 I sit down with a long time friend of mine, Sean Ryan. Sean and I recently caught up for dinner and he expressed interest in changing his lifestyle. Particularly given that cardiovascular disease runs in his family and he is ticking quite a few of the boxes when it comes to modifiable risk factors for having a heart attack or stroke. In fact lifestyle changes are something that Sean has been embarking on for the better part of a year with mixed results. He cannot help but feel confused by all of the mixed messages that that exist across the internet and among health professionals in his community and in many respects has been left feeling disempowered and unsure what to do. As Sean and I got talking during our dinner I realised how valid his questions were and suggested we shared our conversations, and his journey to better health, as a series on this show to hopefully inspire others. He generously agreed and here we are - the first of a handful of episodes with Sean.In this episode we cover:1 - Why Sean wants to change his lifestyle2 - We hear bit's and pieces about Sean's past and life growing up3 - Why he is confused about what to eat4 - Why some of the things I say are evidence based are different to what the Heart Association recommend5 - Answers to questions he has about a plant-based diet6 - A plan from hereOver the course of the next few months I will upload follow up conversations with Sean where we check back in, get an update, go through any questions he has and make plans for the next period. In the next episode we will be discussing his baseline blood tests, his first grocery experience, how he is feeling physically and mentally, what it's been like creating meals without animal products and of course any new questions that he has.Slightly different format that I hope you enjoy. You've heard it all before. Young hairdressers, they're not passionate! They can't be bothered! They don't work the hours we used too! Maybe you agree with these statements, but it so happens that todays guest certainly doesn't. Joining me to discuss this contentious topic is one of our most respected British hairdressers, Sean Dawson. Today we'll be learning from Sean on why he believes we need to give young hairdressers a break! I have long admired Sean Dawson. Continually producing stunning hair work over the last 3 decades, I also love how he never shy's away from being open and honest in discussing and debating controversial topics. Most certainly young people and how they want to do things different to the generation before it never fails to deliver some heated conversations. Having worked within the hairdressing industry for over 33 years, Sean is a multi-award winning session stylist and educator. With a true passion for educating, he has nurtured and developed many young people to go on to become great hairdressers themselves. This has led him to see that young people are willing to work hard and are committed to what they do – if we get them engaged and inspired. Moaning how they can't be bothered is simply not good enough or acceptable! As Sean says: "It's our responsibility and duty to develop young people!". Having the same old approach to how we used to work for young hairdressers is outdated thinking. Instead you need to individually tap into what motivates them and then tailor a dynamic plan to fuel their ambitions. Sean has some great ideas to this, along with a new approach to apprenticeships. All of this and more in today's podcast, so be sure to listen in.   Thanks for Listening To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. As Sean said, we did curse poems in the last episode, so we're doing love poems next to get the bitter taste out of our mouths." In this episode, we talk about how love poems are always starting with the threat of sentimentality, always have an implied narrativity, and are always in defiance of Rilke's directive to his young poet addressee, "Don't write love poetry." In this episode, with attention to the fact that we all hate-to-love and love-to-hate love poems, and extra attention to some canonical love poems that are talking about LGBT relationships before the poets could openly talk about them, we talk about Walt Whitman's lesser-known "From Pent-Up Aching Rivers"; Elizabeth Barrett Browning's famous Sonnet 44 about married love; and Frank O'Hara's sweet "Having a Coke with You." People are seeing the need for a preteen specific ministry but are not willing to pull the trigger to start one. So many times, the ministries feel like it is a gigantic boulder, too large to make it past. And in some cases, there is one leader that will see the vision and then see the boulder ahead of them and wonder if they will be able to accomplish it by themselves. Sean goes on to share two impactful times he had when he first started the preteen ministry and the mighty boulders he will never forget. The lack of volunteers to help prepare for services and the addition of multiple VBS camps during the summer. He had low points while starting the ministry but just remember that getting the boulder going is tough but the bigger the boulder the more momentum it will build and the bigger the impact it will make. NOTE: The title of today's episode is the work of Ben Settle, who promptly smacked my wrist for grabbing one of his old subject lines – and rightfully so. Ben is a friend – but we don't steal from our enemies. We certainly don't steal from our friends! So sorry, el Benbo. The slight was not intentional, but that don't make it right. We changed the name of the episode to reflect Ben's ownership of the term, and we also changed the graphic for the post. Finally, I emailed out subscribers explaining this to them. We do credit Ben in the episode itself – that was always there. And now… on with the show! The week we were recording this we were heading to San Diego for one of the best conferences in the online marketing industry, Social Media Marketing World. We also discuss… (13:40) The three reasons why most companies have what Ben Settle (at BenSettle.com) calls “phantom pooping prospects” and what you can do to help these customers feel calm and confident when it’s time to buy. (18:42) Sean’s journey in applying Seth Godin’s most exciting recent teaching… “People like us do things like this” …  to the Revel77 Coffee Shop. (45:10) My answers to more of Tiffany’s embarrassing questions about things like sacrificing your organs, deciding whether to travel to the past or the future if time travel was a real possibility and why you might consider avoiding the shower for a month. Click here to download or listen to this episode now. Ray’s Tip of the Week: (7:41) This new duo of apps is helping our team be more consistent and classy with our Instagram Stories. (8:10) Why the free templates for this app kind of suck and what to get instead. Spiritual Foundations: (9:25) The New Testament verse that urges you to be like a snake and how it can save your business. (11:59) Why the common idea that Jesus was always meek and gentle is completely wrong and why the Lamb of God suggested we take a leaf out of the Serpent's playbook. Feature Presentation: (13:40) Why many of your company’s prospects are like dogs sniffing around for the perfect place to poop. They circle, they look like their going to do the deed, and then they move on to another spot asking themselves, “is this the perfect spot for me?” (15:22) What business owners need to learn about their “phantom pooping prospects.” This lesson can help even the most constipated buyers feel safe and comfortable enough to make a smooth move into your business. (15:40) The three mistakes most businesses make with their “phantom pooping prospects.” Each of these mistakes is easy to fix. All it takes is a little empathy. (18:42) The live “consulting call” that shows you how to apply master-marketer Seth Godin’s revolutionary teachings to your brick and mortar business. As Sean takes the conversation into an extended tangent about the running of Revel77 Coffee Shop, you’ll discover the high-level psychological reasons for making certain judgment calls in your business and how they can either help or hinder your marketing success. (30:20) Why simple questions like “who is your perfect customer” and “what’s the real problem you’re solving” can fix even the most complicated decisions in your company culture. Even the challenges of creating a unique atmosphere and being different than others in your market all come down to these basic questions. (37:55) Why something as simple as “punch cards” in your store can spoil your company’s image and put you out of business. Even the dilemma caused by giving your customers what they want and seeking uniqueness in your market teaches you something important about your phantom pooping prospects, what kind of dogs they are, and how best to serve them. Tiffany asks embarrassing questions: (45:10) What was one of the most difficult things you’ve had to overcome, apart from the physical challenges you have with Parkinson's disease? How a submarine commander played by Matthew McConaughey can help everyone overcome the scariest unknowns in life. (47:27) Would you rather sell one of your possessions or one of your organs? And if it’s an organ, which one? (48:40) Would you rather give up bathing for a month? Or the internet? (49:26) Would you rather have hands that kept growing as you got older or feet that kept growing as you got older? (50:15) Would you rather be transmitted permanently 500 years into the future or 500 years into the past? Clip from Episode 267 - Doctor Who Series 11, Gender, and Political Regression

This is a clip from this week's full podcast, in which we covered a lot of topics, including this season of Doctor Who and its many creative failings. I wanted to clip out one part of that discussion and share it separately, however, because I think it's the most important part of our comments, and I think it speaks to something few critics are genuinely trying to grapple with this season: Have Chris Chibnall and the Doctor Who creative team done right by the character and the responsibilities of representation in their push for greater on-screen diversity this year? As Sean and I argue here, the politics of this season are actually shocking regressive and pro-status quo, and in creating the first female Doctor, Chibnall's writing has reduced the character to a shallow series of heavily gendered 'quirks,' with the most important character in the season, the character through whom all of the major themes flow, being the one middle-aged white guy on screen. It's a nuanced, complicated discussion, but I wanted people to hear this section if they hear nothing else, so it's excerpted here for that purpose. Enjoy.

His first goal was to crawl 8 feet from the hospital bed to the bathroom. He went on to Redefine Impossible by climbing 29,035 feet to the top of Mt. Everest with one lung! From there he stood atop the highest point on all 7 continents, skied to the South and North Poles, and completed the Hawaii Ironman. Sean has been interviewed by Steve Harvey, CBS Evening News, Fox & Friends, The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Early Show, Huffington Post, Outside the Lines, Sports Center, Washington Post, USA Today, Sports Center, and countless others. His numerous articles with thought leaders such as Sir Richard Branson and Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu put him in a category by himself. The first cancer survivor to stand on the top of the world! With only one functioning lung, a prognosis of fourteen days to live, and being in a medically-induced coma for a year, Sean Swarner is the first cancer survivor to stand on top of the world… Mt. Everest. Sean has broken through defined human limitation in order to redefine the way the world views success. Sean was diagnosed with two deadly, different, and unrelated forms of cancer, once at the age of thirteen and again at the age of sixteen. After an incredibly poor prognosis, and being read his last rites, Sean astounded the medical community when he survived both these brutal diseases. He realized that after defeating cancer twice, no challenge would ever be too great, no peak too high. Sean proved his theory when he crested the peak of Mt. Everest. As the first cancer survivor to do so, Sean decided to continue climbing and has since topped the highest peaks in Africa, Europe, South America, Australia, Antarctica, and North America, thus completing the “7-Summits”. Upon skiing to both the South and the North Poles, Sean completed the Explorer’s Grand Slam. With the completion of the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii, Sean is the only person in history to accomplish these inhuman feats. As Sean continues to defy the odds, test his own endurance and inspire and motivate people around the world, he shares his message of healing, hope, and triumph with cancer patients worldwide. Sean also serves as a source of inspiration as the founder of the non-profit organization, The CancerClimber Association, as author of the book “Keep Climbing,” and as a motivational speaker to corporations, universities, and other organizations around the globe. 2018 Official Oscar® Entry – FRANCE Best Foreign Language Film BPM tells the story of how a passionate group of Parisian activists goes to battle for those stricken with HIV/AIDS, taking on sluggish government agencies and major pharmaceutical companies in with bold, invasive actions. The organization is ACT UP – the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power – and its members embrace their task as a literal life-or-death mission. With more than 6,000 new diagnoses made each year in France, there is no time to waste. And yet, the officials and the corporations are not moving fast enough. “BPM” tells the story of that fight from the inside-out. Amid the rallies, fierce debates and ecstatic dance parties, intimate connections are made and vibrant life rages against death. As the activists scramble from boisterous street demonstrations and boardroom face-offs to dance floors pulsing with light and rhythm, Nathan and Sean’s relationship deepens. They confess individual memories of sexual initiation that are profoundly tied, in different ways, to the emerging AIDS crisis, and sexual intimacy itself becomes a kind of resistance. As Sean gets sicker, their passion sparks against the shadow of mortality, and the activist community of activists plots its most dramatic protest yet. Director and writer Robin Campillo joins us for a conversation on his intimate and thoughtful tale of activism and struggle in the face of intractable indifference and antipathy. In 2010, Sean moved to Atlanta, Georgia to work with a successful entrepreneur and learn the hacks of the business world. He and his friend then launched an online fitness program that "failed miserably." The rebound from his first business was Nectar, an affordable, stylish lifestyle and specialty sunglasses brand. As Sean said, "I just remember being in the shower and my dad had called me and was like, 'What are you doing down there?' I was like, 'I got an idea. It's for sunglasses.' And I just remember being in the shower looking down, just staring and thinking, 'This better fucking work.' I was broke and really had failed in my mind. And I'm competitive enough to want to redeem myself full throttle." The inspiration for the line was based on the surfing, skating, snowboarding and all things "outside lifestyle." The goal was to create a product that he was passionate about and could really get behind. As he describes it, "With Nectar, we promote the sweet life: go do what you love. And that's why we offer a low price point, so people can not be afraid to wear their glasses to the beach or to the river. And they should be an asset to your adventure and your outfit, and not a burden." After killing it for three years, but observing the competition in the sunglasses market, Sean said, "we were looking for new channels to reach out and grow out products." He got in touch with a local celebrity glass blower in Virginia who inspired them to make a line of glasses for glass blowers. As they expanded their specialty line, Sean saw the cannabis industry expanding and knew he wanted to be involved. He also identified a gap in the market for glasses for growers. "We wanted to find a price point that made sense for people who got sticky fingers half the time..these things might get destroyed over the course of a year." About a month ago, after many prototypes, testing Nectar launched their real edition HPS version glasses for high pressure sodium lighting. This was shortly followed by their LED version with the wrapped frame, designed to block as much of the light as possible.
