Guys, we all have a story about the first time we saw pornography.  For me (and maybe you too), it involved finding a Playboy in the woods.  Or someone snagged one of their dad's or uncle's magazines and brought it to guys' night when you were in high school. It might've felt pretty harmless at the time–but for our kids, things are VERY different. How different? I read recently that 50% of kids have seen pornography by the time they're between the ages of 11 and 13, and that twice as many adolescents have seen porn of some kind than their parents realize. Of those kids, more than half saw pornography unintentionally. As someone with a 12 year old boy, this is a topic I've been thinking about a lot–and it's why I needed to chat with Sean Clifford. Sean's the CEO of Canopy, an online parenting app designed to help kids lead a safer existence online. Installed on over 2 million devices worldwide, it uses AI to identify nudity and pornography, can help prevent sexting, and makes it easier for parents to keep tabs on their kids' screen time without rendering the internet unusable. He's also a father of four, so he's deeply invested in all of this. In our chat today, Sean and I talk not just about protecting our kids from pornography, but how to raise children who can make sense of (and resist) all the addictive content out there in our modern world.  Sean Clifford Podcast Highlights What is Canopy, and why should parents care about it? Why is content (including pornography) more addictive than ever before–and only getting more addictive? Why Sean mostly doesn't let his kids use devices as home–and how he and his wife are trying to model acceptable device usage. At what age should we start talking about pornography and problematic content with our kids? Why is it so dangerous to completely disengage from what our kids do online? Why Canopy is not a silver bullet–and why that's okay. What happens when you take screens away from your kids? What we learned from taking screens away on our six week road trip. How do we deal with dopamine hits, serotonin, and feeling fulfilled? How can you do a digital reset for yourself and your family? My guest today was diagnosed with ADHD and twice-exceptionality later in life. We have connected through TikTok and are learning a lot from each other. He demonstrates kind accountability in his TikTok posts and shows authenticity in his longer YouTube posts that I greatly appreciate. Join us to hear his unique perspective. Sean Szolek-Van Valkenburgh grew up in Indiana surrounded by orchestral, classical, and contemporary music. His formal musical education began at age 7 when he started studying piano and performing in choral ensembles. As his musical education progressed, he noticed that he had the unusual gift of chromesthesia. Through TikTok, Sean avidly posts about being a professional musician and artist and connects with over 680,000 followers; he refers to them as “kings, queens, and monarchs.” He hopes to provide a safe, inclusive, and entertaining platform that prioritizes genuine content creation and critical thought. Show Highlights: What is chromesthesia? Multiple senses cross in the brain, making it possible to hear music and also see it in colors, textures, and patterns How Sean uses TikTok to share music and chromesthesia Why Sean is intensely passionate about educating and helping people see the world in different ways, especially the “lightbulb” moments of learning How Sean's personal brand of intensity cuts through to the truth and presents it to people, shining light on obscure areas in the legal system As Sean grew up, he was very adamant about certain fixations, like dominoes and Jenga; his twice-exceptionality was masked by his ability to study and learn, but his ADHD was overlooked for a time How his ADHD impacted the way he planned and self-regulated himself and caused imbalance in his mental health How Sean was socially isolated with a few superficial friendships and focused on his hyperfixations How Sean had to learn in college to apply himself to social constructs The cultural factors that affected Sean as he and his sister were black twins adopted by white parents, and how this helped inform his cultural understanding How Sean had to tone himself down as a counselor at a fine arts summer camp and learn how to expend his energy in appropriate ways Why Sean depends on established routines and structures that work with his ADHD How Sean has gotten out of control on social media in exposing the truth and presenting the facts, sometimes finding it difficult to strike a balance How Sean uses his fire for good in helping people channel their fire into artistic expression in different ways How Sean harnesses the power of his intensity through self-regulation and recognizing the power behind his personality and neurodivergence How Sean recognized his twice-exceptionality How Sean has learned to take time for himself and take mental inventory with introspection Sean's advice: “Be educated and aware when you speak about ADHD. Know your abilities and disabilities. It's a long journey. Find your authentic self and work on defining yourself.” How to ask for accommodations What Sean is working on for the future Resources: Find Sean on Instagram:  @seanszolekvanvalkenburgh Find Sean on Twitter:  @SeanSzolek Find Sean on TikTok:  @seansvv

Our guest today is a copywriting historian and eight-figure practitioner of direct response copy. His name is Sean Vosler and I've wanted to have him on the show ever since I saw some of his detailed, comprehensive mindmaps connecting the early pioneers of advertising to the world of today. He's also the founder of Increase.Academy and author of the best-selling guide “7 Figure Marketing Copy.” He specializes in helping business scale to seven and even eight figures. We're going to talk about a bunch of things today, including how he scales businesses with direct marketing copy. But just as important is his unique and penetrating research back into the 1880s and 1890s, where he is on a mission to find out how we got to where we are today in the world of direct response marketing. Of course, one of the reasons Copywriters Podcast got to where we are are today is the following: Copy is powerful. You're responsible for how you use what you hear on this podcast. Most of the time, common sense is all you need. But if you make extreme claims... and/or if you're writing copy for offers in highly regulated industries like health, finance, and business opportunity... you may want to get a legal review after you write and before you start using your copy. My larger clients do this all the time. On today's show, we heard some wild tales about: -Why Sean is so eager to get to New York - The great copywriters of the late 19th Century, and how their influence stretches from Claude Hopkins to all of us today - How he got into becoming such a prodigious copywriting historian - His new book, 7-Figure Marketing Copy You can find out more about the book at: Sean.co/copywriterspodcastSean.co/copywriterspodcast Download.

Sean helps people boost their energy so they can make positive changes in their life. His methods for helping people reach their optimal performance levels are multi-faceted.  As a biohacker and natural health enthusiast, Sean has in-depth knowledge in supplementation, diet, and exercise.  Sean also owns a chain of float centers, which are places that offer isolation tanks (a.k.a. flotation tanks). Float therapy is a powerful method for improving the way you feel and function, regardless of age. Sean explains the benefits of using a float tank for your health in this fantastic conversation with Wade.  Sean is also a Certified Life Coach and Performance Coach whose clients include professional athletes, television actors, MLS professionals, and the Luluemon corporate team. His credentials equip Sean to coach you through mindset challenges effectively.   Another tool in Sean’s biohacking toolbox is psychedelics. This podcast episode spends a significant portion of time on this topic, providing a great learning opportunity for listeners who are curious about leveraging psychedelics as a personal growth tool. Although controversial, using psychedelics can provide many health benefits, particularly on a mental and spiritual level, when done under proper guidance with an experienced shaman or practitioner who has your best interest in mind.  Wade asks all the right questions, and Sean is gracious with his time providing in-depth answers that dive into all facets of psychedelics, including spirituality.  In this podcast, we cover: The daily routines and practices Sean uses to stay positive and at peace during the pandemic Why Sean broke into the flotation therapy business and the benefits his customers get from this still novel health practice Why you should do dopamine fasts and how to do them The dangers of diving into psychedelics unprepared and not taking them seriously Sean’s experiences with ayahuasca and how this psychedelic helps people heal, experience personal growth, and expand consciousness What good is a spiritual awakening if you don’t do anything with it? How social media addictions steal the benefits of our dopamine and shift those benefits to “someone else” (like Mark Zuckerberg or Jack Dorsey) How people working in the digital space can still benefit from a “media fast”  A powerful NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) technique that rewires your brain from a nonproductive emotional state to a productive emotional state Energy is the Key to Making Positive Changes that Last It would help if you had the energy to make lasting impactful changes in your life. Yet, so many are struggling with low energy. This pandemic of lethargy has a lot to do with our modern technological society. Many people are bombarded with digital stimuli and don’t know how to get off that train. Sean talks about some of these positive changes you can make to increase your energy flow.  Things like making some changes in your environment. Are you sleeping with your Wi-Fi on? Do you keep your phone close to your head? When you wake up, is the first thing you do is look at your phone? No wonder you’re getting crappy sleep.  You should establish a quality morning routine to start your day strong. Sean spends time talking about practical things you can do to stoke your creative fires without caffeine dependence.   How do you make sure your ayahuasca retreat provides lasting change - not just a short “experience”? As Sean and Wade discuss the right mindset in using psychedelics for healing and growth, at one point, the discussion turns to what do you do after coming back from an ayahuasca retreat in Costa Rica? Because the same habits, vices, and people are waiting for you when you return home. Here is a snippet of what Sean says in this episode: “The work up to and the work on the backside of experiences is everything because your friends are still at home, your family, your habits. When you left to go do this experience (ayahuasca), seeking greater awareness and clarity, maybe healing - all your same vices, the same habits, and negative thought patterns and trigger points are all there waiting for you.  So unless you have somebody that you can work with to help navigate all that, you must have enough resolve in yourself to say, okay, I’m going to make some behavioral changes. I’m going to give up sugar. I’m going not watch so much media anymore. I’m going to be kinder to my children. Those sorts of changes are like a baseline. You can also start meditating or begin journaling and then build off of that “big experience.”  Like, what good is a spiritual awakening if you don’t do anything with it, right?”   Sean McCormick was introduced to transcendental meditation when he was 12 years old, bringing this podcast one of the most spiritual conversations Wade has ever recorded. Achieving levels of expertise in some of the most cutting-edge biohacking techniques out there today, you don’t want to miss what Sean has to share.  Check out this episode - healing and spiritual growth could be right around the corner.  Episode Resources:  http://seanmccormick.com/podcasts https://www.instagram.com/floatseattle/ https://www.youtube.com/channel https://www.linkedin.com/in/sean-mccormick-47a3b49/

Ben and I talk to Sean, who works for Behave and Detox here in South Florida in today's episode. He is here to share his story of addiction and his recovery process. Sean shares what to look for in a detox center and details about the detox process. Born in the Bronx, Sean moved to Brooklyn with his mom when his parents separated. Brooklyn was a tough place filled with violent crime, drugs, and alcohol - similar to his household. Today, his father has over 30 years of sobriety, and Sean follows in his footsteps. His mother was physically violent with him from an early age. "What I got as corporal punishment back then is considered child abuse now." He didn't get into drugs or selling drugs because he was too afraid of his mother beating him. At 12, Sean developed addictive behaviors as drugs and alcohol were easy to hold in his town. "That was when crack had first come out, and I rarely went to school in the 8th grade. He was offered his first drug in junior high during 6th grade. "When I really got in trouble in the neighborhood, my mother decided to take me out of there." He and his mother moved to Florida for a better life when he was 14. Once in Florida, he started doing drugs and alcohol. Every summer, he would visit his family in New York without rules or boundaries. An addict at 18, he had to change high schools five times before receiving his diploma. His mother wanted him to go to community college. "I said, save your money, I'm going to a party. That's what I wanted to do because that's all my friends did." Getting into the plumbing industry at the age of 22, he quickly spent his money on drugs and alcohol. As per tradition, apprentices in the union didn't pay for alcohol at the bar. For five years, he never paid for a bar tab. "That was the deal, Thursday at lunch we'd cash our paychecks, we'd go to the bar, and I'd drink for free. Then I'd go home and have my own party." Listen in to find out why Sean was constantly drinking and drugging, how he made excuses for not going to rehab and the events that led him to check in to rehab for the first time at the age of 33. In Episode 89 I sit down with a long time friend of mine, Sean Ryan. Sean and I recently caught up for dinner and he expressed interest in changing his lifestyle. Particularly given that cardiovascular disease runs in his family and he is ticking quite a few of the boxes when it comes to modifiable risk factors for having a heart attack or stroke. In fact lifestyle changes are something that Sean has been embarking on for the better part of a year with mixed results. He cannot help but feel confused by all of the mixed messages that that exist across the internet and among health professionals in his community and in many respects has been left feeling disempowered and unsure what to do. As Sean and I got talking during our dinner I realised how valid his questions were and suggested we shared our conversations, and his journey to better health, as a series on this show to hopefully inspire others. He generously agreed and here we are - the first of a handful of episodes with Sean.In this episode we cover:1 - Why Sean wants to change his lifestyle2 - We hear bit's and pieces about Sean's past and life growing up3 - Why he is confused about what to eat4 - Why some of the things I say are evidence based are different to what the Heart Association recommend5 - Answers to questions he has about a plant-based diet6 - A plan from hereOver the course of the next few months I will upload follow up conversations with Sean where we check back in, get an update, go through any questions he has and make plans for the next period. In the next episode we will be discussing his baseline blood tests, his first grocery experience, how he is feeling physically and mentally, what it's been like creating meals without animal products and of course any new questions that he has.Slightly different format that I hope you enjoy. "If I was going to [make it as an artist], I wanted to prove that I could do without any favors or any connections." Watching his teacher render models out of charcoal on a canvas was like magic, and he was ready to dedicate his life to this creative art. After he decided to move to New York and follow his dream of being a successful artist, he didn't realize until he arrived how naïve he was, and how difficult his journey would be. This week we’re taking off the gloves! My son Sean and I–along with Tiffany and Adrianne–get down and dirty in a heated discussion about Capitalism and Socialism. It all started with a controversial Facebook post I wrote about why I’m a proud Capitalist Pig… oink, oink! We’re also going to talk about… An online tool that allows you to “exponentialize” your social media content. You can create content one time and have it show up in many different social media platforms, “automagically.” The time I fell into the dangerous trap of judgment. Why and when you should or should not judge others and what the consequences of doing so can be if you’re as careless or insensitive as I was. Why Sean and I believe Socialism is “evil.” How a government based on Socialist financial ideas is holding a gun to the head of every business owner. How to put out the fire of a heated political debate. Hint: all it takes is a quick Q & A about hoverboards, 10-inch bellybuttons, and tastebuds in your butt… You’ll see… Click here to download or listen to this episode now. Spiritual Foundations This week I share what I learned from a painful “foot-in-my-mouth” situation. The worst part was, my words were directed at a friend was dying from cancer… I ate a heap of humble pie as a result… (1:45) With weeks to live, my friend told me how much the ministry of a famous TV pastor meant to him. Hear how insensitive I was and what it taught me about being quick to pass harsh judgment. (2:35) Patiently allowing me to explain why I thought this TV minister was theologically wrong, my friend gently helped me see what a fool I was being. I had let my judgment of the minister cloud my mind and make me blind to the more important, more truly ‘Christian’ lesson my friend taught me. Ray’s Tip of the Week: (3:52) This is the coolest service I’ve seen in a long time. Are you a content creator like me? If so, you won't want to miss this ‘tip of the week’ … it will change your life! (4:05) Use this tool to repurpose to content across the internet. For example, do you host a podcast? This tool converts your episodes into several shorter, engaging videos. It posts them to all the major platforms “automagically.” Imagine the amount of time this will save you and your team! Feature Presentation: We had all kinds of fun and got pretty riled about the ideas and ripple effects of Socialisms and it’s pervasiveness in our culture. (5:30) Hear the word-for-word “rant” I posted on Facebook about being a Capitalist Pig. Get a load of some of the outrageous 184 responses I got. I won’t use the 4-letter words, but you’ll get the gist. (6:46) Why one of my friends suggested I run for President in 2020. Ha! Fat chance! But… just in case… #RayEdwards2020. (8:01) Sean shares 2 socialist “horror” stories from the family coffee shop, Revel77. The real threat to their business and how he’s not going to put up with it anymore. (10:00) Why remaining silent when evil ideas are spread is almost as bad as spreading them yourself. How this discussion prompted a zinger of a comment from one of my friends… “Don’t expose people to the truth. They’re very fragile.” (11:40) What people started assuming about my beliefs based on the few things I said. This drives me bananas! (11:59) Tiffany’s thoughts about the ridiculousness of a $15/hour minimum wage. What is says about the people who get this kind of pay with little to no education and how it’s harming society. (12:42) Adrian shares her thoughts about minimum wage and how hard she had to work early in her career to get that kind of money. Why it’s not fair to pay someone the same amount when they have little to no training. (13:59) The benefits of being paid on merit. Why do people think that somehow it’s my fault if the Walmart Greeter doesn’t make enough to support him or herself? (15:27) The most undemocratic thing a country can do. The only two ways governments get money to fix social ills. (16:18) Why we’re all in a constant state of “dilution.” How the government dilutes the value of the dollar with either of its methods of increasing the amount of cash available in the economy. (17:50) The twisted insult that made me wonder whether this “friend” is really much of a “friend” after all. Even his attempt at softening the blow drove the dagger deeper. (18:34) How Socrates described the recourse of losers. The truth hurts pretty bad, after all. (19:00) Why welfare checks and giving people a basic living wage violates human nature. The basic differences between animals and humans prove Capitalist ideas as the most rewarding way for people to adapt and survive. (21:29) The secret to a long and prosperous life. How ignoring this truth has created a nation of sick people who don’t know how to live life and thrive on Cheeto dust and Netflix binges instead. (22:20 ) Why charity has to be completely voluntary or else it becomes a form of slavery. How most forms of taxation are little more than “charity at gunpoint.” (23:46) How governments use the threat of violence to prove safety nets and welfare for people who refuse to take care of themselves. Why entrepreneurs, not politicians, are the real job creators. (25:22) Why Capitalist Pigs are responsible for all the great things we have in society today. Why governments think can they control and over-regulate businesses and how it destroys the potential for economic growth. (26:19) Why considering holding someone at gunpoint is the best way to determine how you should vote for a new law or policy. This litmus test quickly clarifies your moral feelings on any given policy change. (29:18) Why the government's socialistic practices make it so expensive to run a business. Why this made us seriously consider closing the coffee shop and giving up on this style of business. (31:28) How important it is that we not let dangerous soul-killing ideas spread uncontested. Why keeping your head down and your mouth shut can be as harmful as causing the injustice in the first place. (32:17) Two toxic doctrines of demons so prevalent in our society. Why the only hope for humanity is to ruthlessly abandon these ideas. Tiffany’s “Would You Rather” Q&A Session: (33:35) Would we rather live in a world where huge friendly gummy bears walk around or where hoverboards exist? (35:15) Would we rather live the rest of our lives with Cheeto dust on our fingers or have taste buds in our butts? (35:31) Would we rather have accordions for legs or have 10-inch long belly buttons? (36:42) What were the high points and the low points of our week? One included working on Sunday and the other involved an accidental double dose of medication. (38:45) What were the best parts of our recent trip to Nashville? We picked between live music, shopping, and Tiffany being like a grandma and going to be early. (40:58) Adrian's simple cure for pink eye and how to use a type of baby soap to clear it up in a jiffy. Sometimes the best ideas happen while sharing a meal. In the case of GroupRaise, it’s not just ideas that get shared, but a percentage of the profits as well. GroupRaise is a fundraising organization that partners with restaurants across 50 states to offer time slots where local organizations and international charities can book fundraisers in a few clicks. But most people don’t realize that GroupRaise is one of the most cost effective ways of getting new clients into the restaurant and getting them to come back again. Of 100 people who go to a GroupRaise, 40 are new clients, 82 spend more than average and 96 come back in the future! On this episode of Crossing Borders, Sean Park, one of the GroupRaise co-founders, joined me at the Magma Partners office in Chile to talk about how he helped start the tastiest way to change the world. This is a great conversation I think you will enjoy!            Position yourself to lead, regardless of where you are Every entrepreneur could tell a different story of how they gained leadership experience when they started and the most notable lessons they learned along the way. For Sean Park, that story started in South Korea, led him to Canada and then eventually Chile. “I moved to Canada on my own to attend school when I was 14,” he said. Soon after finishing school, Sean traveled back to South Korea to serve as a medic in the military, as was required by the Korean government. At 21 years of age, he was leading more than 50 people for several months at a time. “Most 21-year-olds don’t get that kind of leadership exposure,” he stated. That experience allowed him to learn the process of creating a leadership culture, a skill that he now uses to manage a remote GroupRaise team in Santiago, Chile. Check out the rest of his story, he shares some great leadership perspectives.            How I got to Chile and why I never left After two years in the military, Sean received an invitation to join the GroupRaise project. This ultimately led him to Chile, where his team received funding from Start-Up Chile. When I asked him why he never left, this is what he had to say. “I didn’t have to convince anyone that staying in Chile was a good idea,” he laughed. There were business reasons, as well as personal that influenced the decision. Besides developing a local team that worked very well together, the lifestyle Chile affords was also a motivating factor. After living in snowy Canada for 10 years, the sunny weather offered him the chance to get out and explore. “Bi-weekly, I go up into the mountains, or I go to the beach and surf” he offered. For anyone who has an interest in Chile, Sean offers a great taste of the culture one might experience.   The first is the most important I asked Sean to share advice for leaders building teams across borders, and what challenges remote teams might face. “The first employee you hire is the most important...you need to hire someone who can lead because they will establish the culture for all of the employees that come after,” Sean said. For him and his co-founders, a deep trust was established early on, which then became a foundation for the culture he wanted to build within the company. He also emphasized the importance of clear communication, and how building a “culture sheet” can organize how companies handle issues and answer important questions around company identity and long-term vision.       A remote team is not the same as outsourcing Sean and I addressed a common misconception that remote teams are “just support” for the teams based in the United States. Remote teams are often seen as “outsourcing” work when in reality, they carry as much responsibility and importance as their US partners. Businesses are going to operate within the reality that works best, that makes the most sense for that company, Sean said. Remote individuals are one thing, teams are another. He shared that companies with remote teams should pay careful attention how communication is happening across borders. To solve some of these issues at GroupRaise, the company assigns specific tasks for certain days, they plan times to share content with teams in other countries and time zones and work to communicate everything, not just the “necessary” information. Sean says that the sensitive communication dynamics means an increased level of detail and planning, a culture that is strong at GroupRaise. There is a ton of great content that he talks about, so make sure to listen to this episode.      Outline of This Episode [3:00] Sean’s background, From South Korea to Canada to Chile [12:30] Why Sean considers his military experience invaluable [16:00] Sean shares valuable lessons and advice from the restaurant industry   [19:30] How to build an effective leadership team [24:15] Sean’s transition to Chile and the entrepreneurial lifestyle [29:30] Unique leadership struggles Sean had to overcome [34:10] The outsourcing misconception   [37:30] Practical steps to build a strong employee culture [46:15] Sean’s advice to his younger self: learn how to learn [49:30] The value of knowing where you are headed next      Resources & People Mentioned GroupRaise Delivering Happiness BOOK How to Win Friends and Influence People BOOK   Connect With Nathan www.NathanLustig.com www.MagmaPartners.com On Twitter On LinkedIn

What does it take to become the top of mind person in your niche - you know, the person people in the community think of when they think of that business or niche? My guest on this episode, Sean Carpenter has proven what it takes to become top of mind. He says it’s relationships and that in his business (real estate), houses are the widgets used to foster beneficial relationships. He’s never focused on selling a house or listing a property - he’s focused on helping the people who live in the houses or helping the people who need to sell the house. It’s served him incredibly well. Be sure you listen to get a taste of why Sean is an outstanding mentor in his part of the country when it comes to real estate success. Want to be top of mind? Remember to solve problems. Sean Carpenter reminds us that when you are able to truly solve problems that real people have, you become a trusted advisor and a great resource to them. And if you can do it in a way that makes the experience fun and memorable, you’re well on the way to being their top of mind person in your industry. Sean shares how you can work toward having people think of you specifically when they think of your discipline and business niche, on this episode of Real Relationships. Confidence, competence, and consistency give people a positive feeling about you. And that’s what it takes to become top of mind for your ideal clients. They need to first KNOW that you can do the job, and then they have to know that you WILL do the job reliably. It’s the act of building trust and it happens over time. Those are the kinds of relationships that make you so valuable to people that they can’t help but think of you. Find out how to go about building that kind of awareness in the minds of others from Sean Carpenter, on this episode of Real Relationships. When it comes to maintaining relationships, either you control your schedule or someone else does. Most people feel that the follow-up or consistency needed to keep up with online or distance relationships is not possible for them. But most people who say that simply aren’t in control of their schedule and haven’t prioritized the activity of follow-up as a business building activity they need to do every day. Sean Carpenter describes how he’s been able to put a consistent practice of follow-up in place in spite of his busy schedule and gives some great advice on who you can start doing the same, on this episode. Remembering and using people’s names is the most non-obvious thing to move you forward. When I asked Sean Carpenter for the most non-obvious but important thing he would advise his younger self to do in order to be successful, he responded without skipping a beat. He said that it’s vital to learn how to remember and use people’s names. Your name is the only aspect of language that you own personally, and the power of using someone’s name not only blesses and benefits them, it also makes you stand out in their minds because few people take the time to remember and use their name. Find out more simple but powerful tips like this from my guest, Sean Carpenter by listening to this episode.
