Show Notes: In today's episode, we talk about: How Sean fought hard to reverse this “death sentence” from his doctors becoming a symbol of healing, hope, and triumph for many others.  Why when bad things happen, it feels like forever, as if it's never going to stop, but remind yourself that it will eventually be okay.  How stubborn is not a bad thing when focused on the right things, especially when you become perversely unyielding to achieve what you want.  Why it is important to live with intention so you can truly experience a good, purpose-driven life.  Learn more about Sean here: Website: https://www.seanswarner.com/ (https://www.seanswarner.com/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sean.swarner (https://www.facebook.com/sean.swarner) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/seanswarner/ (https://www.instagram.com/seanswarner/) Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/seanswarner/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/seanswarner/) Twitter: https://twitter.com/SeanSwarner (https://twitter.com/SeanSwarner) Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8xYMH7f0dkJfPV-Wi3CVnw (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8xYMH7f0dkJfPV-Wi3CVnw)   For more information and to explore podcast episodes, visit themikecroc.com. My guest today was diagnosed with ADHD and twice-exceptionality later in life. We have connected through TikTok and are learning a lot from each other. He demonstrates kind accountability in his TikTok posts and shows authenticity in his longer YouTube posts that I greatly appreciate. Join us to hear his unique perspective. Sean Szolek-Van Valkenburgh grew up in Indiana surrounded by orchestral, classical, and contemporary music. His formal musical education began at age 7 when he started studying piano and performing in choral ensembles. As his musical education progressed, he noticed that he had the unusual gift of chromesthesia. Through TikTok, Sean avidly posts about being a professional musician and artist and connects with over 680,000 followers; he refers to them as “kings, queens, and monarchs.” He hopes to provide a safe, inclusive, and entertaining platform that prioritizes genuine content creation and critical thought. Show Highlights: What is chromesthesia? Multiple senses cross in the brain, making it possible to hear music and also see it in colors, textures, and patterns How Sean uses TikTok to share music and chromesthesia Why Sean is intensely passionate about educating and helping people see the world in different ways, especially the “lightbulb” moments of learning How Sean's personal brand of intensity cuts through to the truth and presents it to people, shining light on obscure areas in the legal system As Sean grew up, he was very adamant about certain fixations, like dominoes and Jenga; his twice-exceptionality was masked by his ability to study and learn, but his ADHD was overlooked for a time How his ADHD impacted the way he planned and self-regulated himself and caused imbalance in his mental health How Sean was socially isolated with a few superficial friendships and focused on his hyperfixations How Sean had to learn in college to apply himself to social constructs The cultural factors that affected Sean as he and his sister were black twins adopted by white parents, and how this helped inform his cultural understanding How Sean had to tone himself down as a counselor at a fine arts summer camp and learn how to expend his energy in appropriate ways Why Sean depends on established routines and structures that work with his ADHD How Sean has gotten out of control on social media in exposing the truth and presenting the facts, sometimes finding it difficult to strike a balance How Sean uses his fire for good in helping people channel their fire into artistic expression in different ways How Sean harnesses the power of his intensity through self-regulation and recognizing the power behind his personality and neurodivergence How Sean recognized his twice-exceptionality How Sean has learned to take time for himself and take mental inventory with introspection Sean's advice: “Be educated and aware when you speak about ADHD. Know your abilities and disabilities. It's a long journey. Find your authentic self and work on defining yourself.” How to ask for accommodations What Sean is working on for the future Resources: Find Sean on Instagram:  @seanszolekvanvalkenburgh Find Sean on Twitter:  @SeanSzolek Find Sean on TikTok:  @seansvv

As much as AI has the ability to change the world in very positive ways, it also can be incredibly destructive. Sean McGregor knows this well, as he is currently developing the Partnership on AI's AI Incident Database, a searchable collection of news articles that covers questionable use, failures, and other incidents that affect people when AI solutions are poorly designed.     On this episode of Experiencing Data, Sean takes us through his notable work around using machine learning in the domain of fire suppression, and how human-centered design is critical to ensuring these decision support solutions are actually used and trusted by the users. We also covered the social implications of new decision-making tools leveraging AI, and:   Sean's focus on ensuring his models and interfaces were interpretable by users when designing his fire-suppression system and why this was important. (0:51) How Sean built his fire suppression model so that different stakeholders can optimize the system for their unique purposes. (8:44) The social implications of new decision-making tools. (11:17) Tailoring to the needs of 'high-investment' and 'low-investment' people when designing visual analytics. (14:58) The AI Incident Database: Preventing future AI deployment harm by collecting and displaying examples of the unintended and negative consequences of AI. (18:20) How human-centered design could prevent many incidents of harmful AI deployment — and how it could also fall short. (22:13) 'It's worth the time and effort': How taking time to agree on key objectives for a data product with stakeholders can lead to greater adoption. (30:24) Quotes from Today's Episode “As soon as you enter into the decision-making space, you're really tearing at the social fabric in a way that hasn't been done before. And that's where analytics and the systems we're talking about right now are really critical because that is the middle point that we have to meet in and to find those points of compromise.” - Sean (12:28)   “I think that a lot of times, unfortunately, the assumption [in data science is], ‘Well if you don't understand it, that's not my problem. That's your problem, and you need to learn it.' But my feeling is, ‘Well, do you want your work to matter or not? Because if no one's using it, then it effectively doesn't exist.'” - Brian (17:41)   “[The AI Incident Database is] a collection of largely news articles [about] bad things that have happened from AI [so we can] try and prevent history from repeating itself, and [understand] more of [the] unintended and bad consequences from AI....” - Sean (19:44)   “Human-centered design will prevent a great many of the incidents [of AI deployment harm] that have and are being ingested in the database. It's not a hundred percent thing. Even in human-centered design, there's going to be an absence of imagination, or at least an inadequacy of imagination for how these things go wrong because intelligent systems — as they are currently constituted — are just tremendously bad at the open-world, open-set problem.” - Sean (22:21)   “It's worth the time and effort to work with the people that are going to be the proponents of the system in the organization — the ones that assure adoption — to kind of move them through the wireframes and examples and things that at the end of the engineering effort you believe are going to be possible. … Sometimes you have to know the nature of the data and what inferences can be delivered on the basis of it, but really not jumping into the principal engineering effort until you adopt and agree to what the target is. [This] is incredibly important and very often overlooked.” - Sean (31:36) “The things that we're working on in these technological spaces are incredibly impactful, and you are incredibly powerful in the way that you're influencing the world in a way that has never, on an individual basis, been so true. And please take that responsibility seriously and make the world a better place through your efforts in the development of these systems. This is right at the crucible for that whole process.” - Sean (33:09)   Links Referenced seanbmcgregor.com: https://seanbmcgregor.com AI Incident Database: https://incidentdatabase.ai Partnership on AI: https://www.partnershiponai.org Twitter: https://twitter.com/seanmcgregor

Sean Nastelon is a holistic health coach who believes with conviction that he's figured out the perfect diet for the human genome. What does that mean? I have no idea. So I sat him down to talk about it. On this episode we cover these topics and more: The issue with the traditional American diet, and how we were lied to since childhood. Why and how eating meat is bad for your health. The science behind the vegan diet. The water your drinking is not what you think it is. Alkaline versus acidic foods and why knowing the difference could change your life. Inflammation and its effect on the body. How Sean practices extreme discipline, and doesn't give in to temptation. I connected with Sean on Instagram a couple of years back. I thought he was going to try to sell me a workout program, but he turned out to an extremely kind and community-oriented person. He went on to build an Instagram community of like-minded people which was the result of multiple podcast guests for myself and even a collaboration with a fellow artist 'GitheRapper,' in 2020. In this episode of CHATTINN CYBER, Marc Schein interviews Sean Hoar, of Lewis Brisbois and chair of the Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice. He has extensive experience managing responses to digital crises and effectively marshaling resources to contain and remediate information security incidents. He served as the lead cyber attorney for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Oregon, and he worked closely with the Computer Crime & Intellectual Property Section in Washington D.C. He holds the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), the Global Information Security Professional (GISP), and the Certified Information Privacy Professional/United States (CIPP/US. Sean served in the US Attorney’s Office for many years where he handled career cases that exposed him to the digital world of electronic surveillance. He believes that cyber hackers have evolved fast and have become more sophisticated over the years, leveraging the systems and applications. Sean explains that as long as cybercriminals are able to monetize data; ransom and other exploits are going to continue, the most dangerous of which right now is extortion. Sean explains how he advises his clients to give information to the FBI who gather evidence across the country and attribute each case to malicious actors, they hold them accountable, and criminally charge them. Sean explains why security starts with setting up foundational basics in an organization. He also describes the criteria they use to ensure advanced cybersecurity for their clients: they make sure the internal teams understand what they’re supposed to do, and the external teams stay in touch with their obligations. Companies need to put cyber procedures in place to avoid financial consequences in the long run if they are not proactive. “But for me, it’s a matter of helping them really visualize what it will look like, and until they understand that, it’s going to be hard to get them to take action.” Companies that carry cyber insurance are well educated and have immediate attention and deployment of resources they need to go from one side to the other, which limits the expense and the impact of the attack. Companies without insurance, on the other hand, struggle on who they should call because they don’t have the education and systems in place to go from one side to the other. They contact the wrong people which results in more confusion and expenses. What You Will Learn: The danger of cyber ransom exploits and extortion in risking data privacy online. Why cybercrimes are only going to increase in the future and become more dangerous How Sean helps his clients visualize their cyber exposure procedure as a long-term financial investment. The difference between companies that carry cyber insurance and those who don’t. The tools that Sean created to deal with information security control assessments and response planning for the private sector. The power of building a stable effective team with the right attitude.

Ben and I talk to Sean, who works for Behave and Detox here in South Florida in today's episode. He is here to share his story of addiction and his recovery process. Sean shares what to look for in a detox center and details about the detox process. Born in the Bronx, Sean moved to Brooklyn with his mom when his parents separated. Brooklyn was a tough place filled with violent crime, drugs, and alcohol - similar to his household. Today, his father has over 30 years of sobriety, and Sean follows in his footsteps. His mother was physically violent with him from an early age. "What I got as corporal punishment back then is considered child abuse now." He didn't get into drugs or selling drugs because he was too afraid of his mother beating him. At 12, Sean developed addictive behaviors as drugs and alcohol were easy to hold in his town. "That was when crack had first come out, and I rarely went to school in the 8th grade. He was offered his first drug in junior high during 6th grade. "When I really got in trouble in the neighborhood, my mother decided to take me out of there." He and his mother moved to Florida for a better life when he was 14. Once in Florida, he started doing drugs and alcohol. Every summer, he would visit his family in New York without rules or boundaries. An addict at 18, he had to change high schools five times before receiving his diploma. His mother wanted him to go to community college. "I said, save your money, I'm going to a party. That's what I wanted to do because that's all my friends did." Getting into the plumbing industry at the age of 22, he quickly spent his money on drugs and alcohol. As per tradition, apprentices in the union didn't pay for alcohol at the bar. For five years, he never paid for a bar tab. "That was the deal, Thursday at lunch we'd cash our paychecks, we'd go to the bar, and I'd drink for free. Then I'd go home and have my own party." Listen in to find out why Sean was constantly drinking and drugging, how he made excuses for not going to rehab and the events that led him to check in to rehab for the first time at the age of 33. At Rock Recovery Center, we take a humanistic approach to recovery, teaching our clients how to live independently in a sober world. We care about the success and safety of each and every one of our clients from the moment they step into our center to the future of their well-being. Painter, shop owner, decorator, and author Sean Scherer joins us this week. We talk about creating authentic interiors that tell a story, and Sean shares the inspiration behind his new book, Kabinett & Kammer. We also talk with Sean about using scale and composition to keep balance and flow within a room, using small objects and bright colors to create a large impact, and why it’s okay to just go ahead and purchase that piece you’ve been eyeing up. What You’ll Hear On This Episode: Trials and triumphs on some expensive roman shades, rewiring a lamp, a broken chair, tree talk, and exciting new house plans! In Sean’s new book, Kabinett & Kammer, he celebrates practical yet beautiful interiors in an honest and humble way. It’s all about taking the things we already have and love and displaying them in a new way to get a striking effect. Sean’s mother was a collector, and by watching her reorganize and repurpose, he fell in love with the process. In Sean’s new book, Anderson Cooper wrote the foreword and appreciated the aspect of how we can create a unique and authentic sanctuary for ourselves in our home. We can play with scale to make smaller objects more noticeable, and also use smaller objects as a way to experiment with bright colors. How Sean shops for the Kabinett & Kammer storefront, and uses the shop as another form of artistic output. If you really love something, buy it! It’s all part of building a conversation in our home that shows what we love and who we are. Ways we can take an object and successfully use it out of context, like a great taxidermy piece. It was always what I wanted to do." Sean's love of music and his true desire to be a musician. How classical music was a kind of "bubble" and an escape for Sean, a place where he could be comfortable. "Going abroad was a realization of a dream."8:52 - Sean remembers how performing expressively was a challenge, partly because of what Sean calls the "cultural pressure" of his upbringing - to be quiet, to listen to adults - and how some of this affected his playing and put him at a disadvantage as he confronted conflicting messages. "I wasn't supposed to express myself."11:10 - The challenges of "assimilation": "Why are you being snobbish? Why are you disrespecting your trio mates?" How a music coach shamed a 14-year-old Sean for being reserved and quiet. How this music coach failed to understand or feel the need to understand Sean's background as well as his limited English at that time. How the burden of assimilation is placed on immigrants to adjust their behaviors, customs, and personhood for the comfort of the dominant culture. "My quietness was misunderstood and taken almost as an act of defiance."15:04 - "In this society, one is assessed by how he/she talks and acts....the initial impression is everything, the first 10-20 seconds can form someone's impression, sometimes permanently." Without knowing this because, as Sean puts it: "in Asian societies, things work slightly differently," Sean recounts his struggles with inadvertently making a "not good first impression" and how for the longest time he wondered, "why don't people like me? Why am I so unpopular among my classmates and teachers?"16:07 - How it was only in his 20's and 30's that Sean began to examine and reflect upon his experiences and how the difference between his Taiwanese culture and American culture was bigger than he wanted to admit, even to himself.17:03 - The implicit bias that Asians experience in white culture. The myth of meritocracy and how that burdens non-whites with the belief that all things are fair and equal in American and therefore, the deficiencies lie not within the system but within the individual who fails to be "good enough."18:50 - Sean and I share our experiences with microaggressions and how we experience them on a nearly daily basis.19:28 - What led Sean to his multi-faceted career as a violinist, scholar, and conductor. How the perception of specialism versus generalist has affected his career.22:22 - How Sean's scholarship in musicology changed his approach to violin playing.25:20 - "The freedom one gains from knowing more." "Knowing more helps me make better decisions and helps me teach."30:04 - Sean's challenges in finding a career path after graduation while also balancing his family's needs, leading him to playing country music in Nashville, teaching at various institutions, joining Ars Lyrica Houston, executive directing Bach Society Houston, and now, conducting and teaching at the Longy School of Music of Bard College.33:50 - Sean talks about times in his career when he became aware of his race. How "Asian musicians are admired for showmanship and not so much musicianship." How people make assumptions about Asian musicians.39:19 - The "bamboo ceiling" that continues to prevent Asian musicians from rising to positions of executive power. "It seems that in order to get to the same place as white colleagues, an Asian has to work almost twice as hard."44:40 - How Sean feels the priorities have changed for current students and graduates of music schools today.47:36 - "At times, it's healthy to not feel all that comfortable."53:22 - East West Music, a non-profit that Sean founded that commissions new music for Western and Eastern instruments.54:40 - Sean's "practical advice" to his younger self, about the importance of having an "artistic identity" and the importance of breaking from tradition.

He worked at the University of Utah Hospital doing research on artificial hearts and quickly realized that he doesn't like working for someone else (or have someone controlling his time, pay, and future). Sean discovered Real Estate Investing a few months later and the amazing world of Real Estate. Ever since he has been passionate about REI, and he thinks about it every spare moment he has. Sean did a couple of flips and buy-and-holds in 2016. On February 1st, 2017, he quit his job as an Engineer and partnered up with Memphis Investment Properties to act as their co-partner and Chief Operating Officer. There, he manages the day to day operations of acquiring, fixing and selling Turnkey properties. He uses his engineering skills to organize and streamline the day-to-day systems and processes of the business. Over the past three years, they have done roughly 250 flips a year in Memphis TN. I’ve said it before and I’m going to keep saying it: There are only opportunities around you right now. Take some time to reconfigure your real estate dreams and start making some money. Sean Terry from Flip2Freedom has shifted over to remote wholesaling over the last 20-30 months, and he has some awesome advice for how he’s reworked his business to adjust for this change. Surprisingly, Sean and I are both seeing old leads bubbling up from months ago as sellers feel a lot more motivation to sell and regain some liquidity. But Sean warns that you have to structure in the COVID-19 pricing, which means offering just a little bit less than what was offered even 90 days ago. Maybe you’ve heard me talk about my success in small towns, but you’re a little nervous that you’re going to get stuck holding the house in a market that doesn’t move. And I get it. But both Sean and I have only had success in these hot little real estate markets. Even in this mess, with everything closed down and everyone working from home, Sean can still do deals virtually. By using the ultimate close question and walking the seller through the process over the phone, Sean is still closing deals and making money all over the country. Moving to virtual wholesaling is the perfect answer to the uncertainty that’s in the market right now, so if you need some help with a script or getting a system in place, Sean’s set up a course right now called Remote Millions that can help you transition over to virtual work. And he knows a lot of you might be struggling, so he’s offering 50% off the price now. You’re still going to be able to do business remotely, and that’s one of the true beauties of real estate. So if you need a little help getting started, I highly recommend working with Sean. What’s Inside: —Massive buyers like Redfin and Zillow are pulling out of markets like Phoenix, so Sean’s seen a huge surge of leads while his marketing costs remain the same. —Sean has one of the absolute best ways to find sellers and buyers for small towns. —How Sean’s phone system lets his team work virtually, but still stay connected. —Marketing that currently works for Sean, and if he plans on changing it.

Big Quotes Highlighting expertise in the Spiceworks community (20:16): “We use what we call the pepper scale system. You get points for engaging the community. Everyone starts as a little Pimento, and you can work your way up to Pure Capsaicin. One of the challenges with that is we have individuals who are up at Ghost Chili, Thai Pepper, even Pure Capsaicin and, when they’re making posts, people are automatically giving it an assumption of expertise. The challenge there is with IT professionals, there’s so many avenues, there’s so much technology, technology is changing so much that just because I’m a Pure Capsaicin, that just means I post a lot. [We started a new status system, which] gives you a level expertise [based on those] different technology areas. I could be an expert when it comes to Active Directory, but I may know nothing at all when it comes to Linux. Now that’s highlighted on my profile, but also in the topics themselves.” –@ashentemper Making the most of your data resources (34:05): “I used to be a front end developer myself. I know a little SQL. Don’t ever hire me for it. We do data downloads, every day, of what’s going on with the community. I was running my own reports in spreadsheets. One of our business analysts came by one day, and they saw this Excel sheet with 50 tabs, doing all these weird things. They’re like, ‘What are you doing?’ I said, ‘This is showing my first-time posters. This is showing my retention rate based off of the different pepper levels.’ I guess they were so insulted about how bad these Excel sheets were that they actually went and built the real dashboards [for me].” –@ashentemper The importance of anonymity for some community managers (42:20): “Back when I just started community management, at least in the game industry, you didn’t use your [real] name. Part of the reason was fear of people coming and finding you and putting pies in your face. [Once], a user found the office and had a VHS of just videos of someone getting a pie in their face for 40 minutes. Then, at the end of it, said ‘see you soon.’ You never use your real name. If you go look at the game industry, especially back in the early 2000s, everyone had these weird [usernames].” –@ashentemper About Sean Dahlberg Sean Dahlberg is the director of community for a vertical network dedicated to technology professionals called Spiceworks. It’s a new month and change is coming to the EcomCrew Podcast.  If you haven’t listened to last Thursday’s goals update, I talked about us reducing the number of episodes in a week from two to one. We want to provide you with the best possible content and, in order to do that, it was a decision to go for quality over quantity. Today’s episode is something that I believe fits the bill. As entrepreneurs, we tend to fall prey to our own success. The struggle to keep up with growth often means that our cash flow takes a beating. Affording inventory can become a real problem.  This is why I’m excited to have Kickfurther CEO Sean de Clerq and VP of Business Development David Koifman on the show.  Kickfurther is a platform that brings together businesses with inventory funding needs and individuals looking to grow their money on ecommerce. The platform helps cash-strapped businesses grow by raising funds from individual buyers to pay for the business' next order. When the business sells the inventory successfully, the individual buyers get paid and earn a profit. In this episode, you’ll learn: How a Kickstarter campaign and Sean's financing problem gave birth to the idea of Kickfurther - 2:34 How Kickfurther deals first came together - 8:23 How Sean found early backers who trusted their brand-new platform - 10:35 Criteria for a business to be on the platform - 19:08 Step-by-step process for a business to get funding - 23:53 Timeline for a business to get funding  - 28:13 Kickfurther's finance charges - 29:59 What returns have been historically for investors - 36:22 Risk factors - 44:38 Consignment setup - 48:44 Special Kickfurther deal for EcomCrew listeners - 53:43 If you want to try out Kickfurther for yourself, head over to ecomcrew.com/kickfurther.
