Martin Conway & Camilo Erlichman: DEMISE OF A DREAM? SOCIAL JUSTICE PAST AND PRESENT

Martin Conway, Camilo Erlichman, Fabio Wolkenstein, Julia Hofmann, Eva Maria MuschikDEMISE OF A DREAM? SOCIAL JUSTICE PAST AND PRESENTToday, we live in a time of a post-liberal challenge to social justice. Over much of the twentieth century, social justice has been closely associated with liberal democracy, with its claims included, in one way or another, in the political programmes of all democratic parties and movements. The expansion of social justice into the rhetoric of both the political right and left, however, has led to the universalization of social justice claims, and its promises have become an essential part of the ways in which illiberal movements and authoritarian regimes in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have constructed their legitimacy. What can this history teach us to face the challenges of today more effectively? Here, historians will discuss the modern evolution of concepts and practices of social justice in conversation with social scientists, engaging with questions such as: What have historically proven to be successful forms of collective mobilization around issues of social justice in both democracies and authoritarian regimes? Do individual appeals to social justice matter? What languages does social justice speak? How was social justice reimagined during the twentieth century? Does the debate and concept of social justice in the twentieth century differ from today? The talk and discussion occur on the occasion of the release of Social Justice in Twentieth-Century Europe (Cambridge U Press, 2024), edited by Martin Conway and Camilo Erlichman and written by an international team of leading historians. The book provides the first historical account of the evolution of notions of social justice across Europe since the late nineteenth century. It analyses the often divergent ways in which political movements, state institutions, intellectual groups, and social organisations have understood and sought to achieve social justice. Martin Conway, Professor of Contemporary European History at the University of OxfordCamilo Erlichman, Assistant Professor in History at the Department of History, Maastricht UniversityFabio Wolkenstein, Associated Professor, Department of Political Science, University of ViennaJulia Hofmann, Sociologist, Chamber of Labour, ViennaModeration: Eva-Maria Muschik, Assistant Professor in Development Studies, University of Vienna A joint event of the Bruno Kreisky Forum and the MSCA Research Project WORK-AGE-JUST

Today's guest is Virginia Dignum, Director of the AI Policy Lab, Professor of Computer Science at Umeå University, and an Associated Professor at Delft University of Technology. In this special episode of the “AI Futures” series on the AI in Business podcast, we offer an exclusive sample from the Trajectory podcast, hosted by Emerj CEO and Head of Research Daniel Faggella. Together, Virginia and Daniel hypothesize what human governance over artificial general intelligence (AGI) might look like, and the many challenges NGOs and international bodies face today in creating the foundations for these governing structures. Virginia challenges the prevalent AGI narrative, advocating instead for a focus on what she terms “Human General Intelligence” (HGI), emphasizing collaboration and human-machine augmentation over existential AI risks. The discussion explores why governing AI requires a socio-technical approach, ensuring accountability rests with humans rather than machines. Virginia also highlights the importance of global governance to address both the risks and equitable benefits of AI, touching on her hands-on experience with international policy groups. If you're interested in getting more perspectives on AI's longer term impact on business and society, be sure to tune into the Trajectory podcast. A lecture with Q&A by Dr. Andrew Messmer entitled "Spain's Forgotten Reformation." The Spanish Reformation has been almost completely forgotten, including by many 16th century specialists. Yet its roots preceded Luther, and it secretly attracted scores of top-level Spanish clergymen and academics across the country. It was insistent on equally stressing orthodoxy and orthopraxy. Had the Spanish Inquisition not snuffed it out, it may have been the most promising Reformation of all. In this lecture, Dr. Andrew Messmer introduces the major figures and questions of the Spanish Reformation's first 100 years. What did the Spanish Reformers believe? Why was the Spanish Reformation unsuccessful? What would a Spanish Church look like today? These questions will be examined, along with key Reformers such as Juan de Valdés, Constantino de la Fuente, Casiodoro de Reina, and others. Andrew Messmer (Ph.D., Evangelische Theologische Faculteit) is Academic Dean of Seville Theological Seminary (Spain); Associated Professor at the International Faculty of Theology IBSTE (Spain); Affiliated Researcher at Evangelical Theological Faculty (Belgium); and editor of the World Evangelical Alliance's Spanish journal Revista Evangélica de Teología. He has written and edited books and articles in Spanish and English. His Spanish page is WWW.CASAREINAYVALERA.COM, where he writes about all things related to Christianity. He is married and has five children.

"I think that writing also is among the things that help me think this through and get there. When I finished my degree, I was actually very pessimistic - I had no idea that at close to age 55-56 that a psychoanalytic institute would even consider me but I did decide to take the leap and I ended up going to BPSI [Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute] and here I am." — Ellen Pinsky    "The training time was a time of discovering - we read the authors I knew, and what was happening to me also at that moment, what kind of an analyst would I be during and after the training? My background encouraged me to go on - when it was difficult to go on searching for the truth, searching for the knowledge, but the knowledge about myself during the training and it went on in my actual training analysis." —Susana Merlo    Episode Description: We discuss Susana's and Ellen's first careers in education and what led them "to wish to go deeper." They both describe the formative contributions of their own analyses as well as the influence of analytic writers that they valued. We consider the possible advantages and disadvantages of each of the many backgrounds that we bring to our clinical work and share conclusions about the similarities and differences in how we practice. We discuss some of their favorite writers and we conclude with their perspectives on the future of psychoanalysis both in the States and in Argentina.    Our Guests:  Susana Ruth Merlo is a member of APdeBA (Asociación Psicoanalítica de Buenos Aires, Argentina) and holds a position as an Associated Professor at IUSAM of APdeBA (Instituto Universitario de Salud Mental de APdeBA), where she teaches Introduction to the ideas of Melanie Klein and English School. She provided school psychological services in school settings for 15 years. At present provides therapy to children, adolescents, and adults in a private clinic setting. Susana holds two university degrees, School Psychology (1986) and Clinical Psychology (2007).    Ellen Pinsky came to psychoanalysis as a second profession following 25 years as a middle school English teacher. She says her experience in the classroom with 12 and 13-year-olds taught her most of what she needed to know to become a credible clinician. She is the author of Death and Fallibility in the Psychoanalytic Encounter: Mortal Gifts. About her book, Thomas Ogden writes: “Mortal Gifts is a necessary book—necessary for analysts and necessary for the analyses they conduct. In it, Ellen addresses a long-neglected issue in the practice of psychoanalysis: the analyst's failure to include in the very fiber of the analysis the fact of his or her mortality.” In 2014 she was awarded BPSI's Deutsch Prize for her essay “The Olympian Delusion” (JAPA, 2011)    Recommended Readings:  SM  Bion, W. For this episode we're back in the Faraway Forest at Latitude Festival with Rupert Read representing for Extinction Rebellion. Rupert is an Associated Professor of Philosophy at the University of East Anglia, an author, a blogger, and – most passionately – a climate and environmental campaigner. Throughout 2019 he has frequently been a spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion and is a member of their political liaison team, meeting with senior politicians from across the political spectrum. He has represented Extinction Rebellion on national radio and television, including on Radio 4's Today Program and on the BBC's Politics Live. On this occasion, Rupert found himself in a Shed, in a forest, being interviewed by a man wearing an orange spacesuit and too much glittery eyeliner. In this episode Rupert explains: why space travel is terrible for the planet how space travel and science fiction can help us save the planet why civilisation is likely to collapse because of climate breakdown what ‘civilisation collapse’ even is how Extinction Rebellion is leading the fight to prevent climate breakdown and civilisation collapse what each of us can do to get involved and fight climate breakdown and answers questions including: what should corporations be doing to prevent climate breakdown? isn’t the UK doing loads already? Isn’t it other countries that need to step up? how do we fight this while we have powerful leaders like Donald Trump who don’t believe in climate change? why does the UK media not highlight this problem ALL THE TIME? how do you talk to people who aren’t yet committed to fighting climate breakdown? what is your view on whether or not Extinction Rebellion should target Heathrow? when will I be able to afford to change my boiler? All of which was excellently stimulating (and occasionally terrifying) fun. 哺乳动物尿尿平均需要几秒?Researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, USA, have compiled footage of animals peeing to prove their "law of urination", which states that mammals take about 21 seconds to pee.Male or female, small bladder or big bladder, it doesn't matter. Elephants, farm animals, dogs and any mammal above 3 kilograms in weight require a similar time frame to relieve themselves, give or take 13 seconds.Dr. David Hu, Associated Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Biology at the Georgia Tech is the study's co-author. He talks about his inspiration for the research."The whole thing started when I was changing my son's diaper, while he urinated on my face. And then I realized he was urinating for a really long time. You know babies are really small. He is maybe 10 to 20 pounds. And the time it takes is about 20 seconds. And it was the same when I go to the bathroom later; it is as the same time as I took. What made me wonder is but I am much bigger than him, shouldn't I take more time?"The researchers headed over to Zoo Atlanta to watch the animals do their business. Dr. Hu says, watching animals relieve themselves came with its own unique challenges. While timing each pee session was easy, measuring the flow rate was hard, because they had to collect the urine. That's no easy task. First off, it's hard to catch an animal in the act. Second, they have to catch all the urine in order to get an accurate measurement of how much liquid is coming out per second."The elephant, the zoo trainers know that they stand on the stool and step down from the stool, stand on the stool and step down, eventually they want to urinate. They got the urine which is filled the whole garbage can, 20 liters. The Cow, to get them to urinate; you actually have to (give them a) massage. And then, dogs, you can't have a pot underneath them, so you take beneath them a big mat, and you weight the mat. So when you have a goat urinating, it's more similar to us, because they are about the same size to us."Plus, since they had to collect the urine by hand, it was unavoidable for the high-speed camera and the scientists themselves to occasionally be splattered by the liquid. After they collected all kinds of data, they found something very strange or even surprising. While some of those larger animals had really capacious bladders, as Dr. Hu mentioned just now that an elephant can fill a kitchen garbage can with pee. From the cat to the goat to the elephant, they all seem to empty in about the same time: 21 seconds, give or take 13 seconds. That range may partly be because the animals often urinate for different reasons, for example, males often use urine to mark territory and some rodents use the urine as a defense.Dr. Hu says it's a remarkably tight window. After all, even though an elephant's 18-liter bladder is nearly 3,600 times larger than a cat's, it doesn't take 3,600 times longer to empty. This means that the elephant must be spewing out a massive torrent of liquid at high speeds in order to empty itself in the same time frame as a relatively tiny feline bladder. The secret seems to lie in the urethra's design, which uses gravity to its advantage. Dr. Hu gives out 2 resons to answer the question why almost all the mammals urinate for the same time."First, imagine the urethra is a highway. On a highway, if you have more lanes, you have more cars travelling through. So the urethra for elephant for example, it's thicker than my leg. And that allows having a huge area to allow the urine to pass through. The other reason is much more subtle. The elephant's urethra, the height is one meter; it's about as tall as my leg. What that does is to make the urine travel much faster, because it has more gravitation energy. "The longer the urethra, the faster the flow, because just as the pressure builds toward the bottom of a deep swimming pool, the pressure in a liquid-filled urethra also builds toward the bottom of the tube. And since the urethra is also proportionally wider in larger animals, it basically adds extra lanes to this fast-moving pee freeway, or "pee-way".Tiny animals, like rats, appeared to urinate in a very different way from us: in little "gumballs" of water dispensed one by one. Small animals don't have enough liquid in their system to make it flow. But animals bigger than 3 kilograms, including humans can store a large amount of urine and used essentially the same mechanism: it basically came out in a jet or a stream."Urination is a very important area of research, because for humans, there can be a lot of problems with the urinary system. So maybe you heard about kidney stones, or urinary tract affections. A lot of these medical problems are difficult to diagnose. And the reason is because the urinary system is inside the body. So in our study we wanted to figure out a way to characterize the health of urinary system, just by looking on the outside."Understanding urination duration has important health implications given that illnesses like prostate cancer or conditions like obesity can put pressure on the urethra, it can make the process of voiding lengthier. If it takes too long to pee, chances are there's a health problem that needs attention. The findings have been released by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shed light on the mysterious fluid dynamics of urination. Understanding the urinary tract, a mechanism that works at many different size scales, could also help engineers build better devices that rely on fluid flow, from above-ground water tanks to water-efficient toilets."So the urethra is a magical tool. You add something in the container, and you can control how much time it empties. It doesn't matter how big the container's, it could be as big as a cup, like the dog, or as big as a kitchen garbage can, can be one liter, 20 liters, or can be a hundred liters or thousand liters or million liters, as long as you have this urethra, it will be 21 seconds. We think this might have applications in building large water towers or backpacks, anything you want to control the time for things to come out, you don't have to add a pump, all you have to do is to design a tube very carefully, just as the animals do."
