In the end, the Crown Prince pounds on the ice with his hands and then uses the zombie giant to finally break the ice.The miracle that allowed the Crown Prince and a few of his men to be saved when they fell in the water. The amazing Seo-bi, who manages to escape the main hall with the baby prince by using fire and her wits. When the Crown Prince and his men open up the palace gates, the Head Scholar says the baby prince must be found and killed so there won't be chaos in the country. When the Crown Prince finds Seo-bi and the baby, Seo-bi assures him that the baby won't turn into a monster. The prince now knows that his father has become one of the zombies. How the Crown Prince makes some important decisions that almost seem out of character:Despite the horrible scene at Jihulyeon, the prince decides to go to the Frozen Valley to find Seo bi and learn more about what happened to his father. When Seo bi explains that the people aren't dead, the prince tells Mu Yeong to go back to the magistrate's office with Seo bi, while he will go back alone to Jihulyeon to find physician Lee Seung Hui's medical journals. We wonder why Seo bi and Young shin didn't burn the bodies and we think it's because Seo bi believed she could save the people, AND it was considered immoral to burn the bodies of the deceased. The epic fight scene between the prince and Cho Beom il; Cho Beom il now knows that the prince knows what happened to the king. The flashback that shows the king being pronounced dead by Lee Seung Hui, but Cho Hak ju and the Queen consort tell the physician he must do what he did three years ago.The mysterious dead bodies being dropped in the lake, which we believe are victims of the king.Young shin and Seo bi try to convince the magistrate that the dead people aren't dead but nobody believes them, and they are both jailed. In the last scene, the prince escapes the zombies, runs through the forest, runs toward the water's edge and sees Dong Nae burning in the distance. The amazing Ju Ji hoon, including his education, acting success, and how he wasn't the first choice for the part of the Crown Prince!ReferencesSungkyunkwan - WikipediaTrend of cremation for Korea's deceased

Welcome to Season 9 of K Drama Chat! In this season, we'll be recapping and analyzing Kingdom, the zombie historical from 2019. Kingdom stars Ju Ji-hoon as Crown Prince Yi Chang, Bae Doona as Seo-bi, Ryu Seung-ryon as Cho Hak ju, Kim Sang-ho as Mou Young, Kim Sung-kyu as Yeong shin, and Kim Hye-jun as the Queen Consort. We discuss:Our enduring love for Crash Landing On You, and how we're finding it tough to move on.How we can't seem to find much information on the music composer from Kingdom, Mok Yeong Jin.How Kingdom is set at the start of the 17th century, three years after the end of the Imjin War against Japan. Although Kingdom is entirely fictional, the Sunjo Annals describe a plague that swept through Korea in the early 1800s. Other annals report on a famine between 1670 and 1671 that resulted in mass famine. The main characters: Crown Prince Lee Chang, physician Seo-bi, Chief State Councilor Cho Hak ju, the Crown Prince's body Mu Young, the mysterious peasant Young shin, and the Queen Consort. The mystery behind the king's illness and disappearance from public life.Court hierarchy and how the Crown Prince, as the son of a concubine, is in danger because the Queen Consort is pregnant. If she bears a son, that son will be the Crown Prince, unless the king dies before the child is born. The Crown Prince's audacious decision to leave the palace, search for physician Lee Seung hui, and travel the great distance to Dong Nae.The Crown Prince's confession to Mu Young that it was HE who committed treason by writing the letter and getting the other scholars to sign it.Young shin's decision to take Dan I and turn him into soup, which ultimately leads all of the patients at the clinic to turn into monsters.ReferencesIs Kingdom historically accurate? The smallpox epidemic in the US during the 1700sASTORY websiteVeritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty - Wikipedia

EVEN MORE EYES On the Screen: A Cinema Podcast

In this brief episode of 'Even More Eyes', James and Imo review director Hirokazu Kore-eda's latest feature 'Broker' (2023), starring Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won, Lee Ji-eun, Lee Joo-young, Im Seung-soo and Bae Doona. Taking an unusual detour from high octane action and superhero antics, the two critics settle into the Japanese filmmaker's first foray into South Korean society. A young mother's fateful decision to leave her newborn baby at a church depository box has life-changing consequences for her, two opportunistic brokers, a mischevious orphan, and the pursuing police. For one of our critics it's a return to Kore-eda's thematics of social class and unfamiliar familial bonds (2013's 'Like Father, Like Son', 2017's 'After the Storm' and 2018's 'Shoplifters') , while for another it's their first encounter with the director-writer's quietly powerful work. Do they think this feature is Kore-eda's finest or spinning the wheel on his usual topics? Click play to find out.

Sam Clements speaks to actor Bae Doona, star of Hirokazu Kore-eda's Broker - in cinemas now. Bae Doona's answers are translated by Seh Hyun Rho.  On a rainy night in Busan, So-young (Lee ‘IU' Ji-eun) leaves her baby Woo-sung outside a ‘baby box', a safe place set up in Korean churches for new mothers to leave unwanted infants. Instead, he's picked up by Sang-hyun (Parasite's Song Kang-ho) who runs an unofficial adoption brokerage and plans to find him a new home. So-young tracks down both Sang-hyun and his business partner Dong-soo (Gang Dong-won) and decides to join their pursuit (alongside a seven-year-old stowaway from a nearby orphanage), but as they search for Woo-sung's new family, the unlikely group evolves into something of a family themselves – unaware they're being tailed by two detectives (Bae Doona, Lee Joo-young) who are determined to stop them. Heartwarming, funny and moving, BROKER is the outstanding new film from Hirokazu Kore-eda, the acclaimed director of Shoplifters.   If you'd like to send us a voice memo for use in a future episode, please email podcast@picturehouses.co.uk. Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here for their latest movie retrospective. This time they're talking about 10th anniversary of Cloud Atlas. Cloud Atlas is a science fiction film directed by Tom Tykwer, Lana Wachowski, and Lilly Wachowski. The movie is based on the novel by David Mitchell. It opened in theaters on October 26, 2012. The film charts the journey of reincarnated souls throughout time. Locations include 1970s San Francisco, present day London, and Seoul in the far future. The ensemble cast features Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Bae Doona, Ben Whishaw, Jim Sturgess, Jim Broadbent, and Hugo Weaving. The film polarized critics and audiences. Roger Ebert gave the film 4 out of 4 stars, while Village Voice named it the worst film of 2012. Financed through independent sources, the film was not a box office success, only making $130 million on an approximately $100 million budget. Josh and Aaron discuss the movie's ambition, the different storylines, and how it compares to the Wachowskis' other films. What Are We Watching - WAWW What dramas have we recently watched/ are currently watching - We share our impressions of these dramas. Completed Dramas 2021/22 Releases: Our Beloved Summer : The perfect slow-burn romance if there ever was. Choi Woo Sik and Kim Da Mi's acting brilliance, great soundtrack. Must watch Taxi Driver - Crime Thriller. Great plot up to Ep10, then it went downhill as a typical revenge drama. Esom's prosecutor was kickass. Not a bad watch. The Silent Sea - Dystopian Thriller. Reflects a world that could be reality for future generations. Gong Yoo and Bae Doona dynamic is the highlight. Minal and Poonam recommend this. Bad & Crazy: Action/Thriller. Mainly for Lee Dong Wook in Action role. Good banter between Wi Ja Hoon and LDW. 12 episodes - Recommended by Sangeetha Ghost Doctor: Fantasy/Medical. Witty banter, ghosts, good use of tropes, some great performances - Rain, Kim Bum, Uee, Sung Dong Il, cleaner ajumma. Watch, if you need a good laugh, says Sangeetha. Mad About Each Other: Romcom but leads have mental health issues. Realistic portrayal and heart-warming. Recommended by Poonam. Older Dramas: Mr Sunshine: Period Drama set in late 1800s/Early 1900s depicting Korea's fight against Japanese invasion. Great ensemble cast, one of the best female leads in KDramas , beautiful cinematography and a gripping storyline. We all highly recommend it . Dalja's Spring : Noona romance - strong female leads. Recommended by Sangeetha While You Were Sleeping: Fantasy/Legal. Great writing. A healthy love triangle. Jung HaeIn ruled this drama. Recommended watch. Flower of Evil - Crime Thriller. Great plot, Lee Joong Gi steals the limelight. It's a crime drama, but Minal loved how it explored complex human relationships and trust. Recommended watch. I am Not a Robot: Romcom. Ridiculous plot but a lot of fun. Poonam recommends it for a fun light-hearted watch. Entertainer - Absolutely wholesome drama. Sangeetha and Poonam suggest hanging in there for initial episodes, the drama picks up after 3 episodes and is emotional, but heart-warming. Currently Watching Thirty Nine - First 2 episodes were underwhelming. Didn't measure up to the high expectations given the cast. Forecasting Love & Weather: Messy start, but has picked up from episode 3. Strong female lead. Twenty Five Twenty One: Favourite amongst all of us. Kim Taeri is stealing the show, but the entire cast is essaying their roles well; especially Choi Hyun Hyuk who plays Ji Woong. Join the bandwagon with us :) Chocolate : A healing drama where the main leads - a neurosurgeon and chef come to work together in a Hospice and heal themselves with the patients. The friendship between the male lead and his friend, is one of the best Minal has seen in Kdramas. Music Credits: Music from Uppbeat: https://uppbeat.io/t/mood-maze/trendsetter. The first two seasons are now available on Disney+.
