We chat about how beekeepers make good use of Knotweed.Afterward, Jolee rests in a patch of Crown Vetch. Farmers once used it as a cover crop, and municipalities and homeowners planted Crown Vetch to secure slopes. Now it's considered invasive in many places, though pollinators adore them too. We wrap up chatting about Barberry & Butterfly Bush, once eagerly planted in landscapes and now are on invasive plant lists. Then we shift the paradigm by propagating new varieties and perhaps begin rethinking how we view invasive weeds and plants. Link to Related Stories:Knotweed meets Crown Vetch September Roadside Beauties Beneficial LadybugsI look forward to sharing more garden and nature stories from you, kind listeners. In Episode #57, co-hosts Beata and Bita breakdown the iconic Persian dish called Zereshk Polo (Barberry rice), and walk through how to make it. They reference other recipes made with barberries, and offer subsitions and storage methods.    What is zereshk? Dried barberries Similar in appearance to a goji berry only smaller and brighter Pinkish, reddish in hue - almost like a pinkish, red, smaller raisin Tart or sour in flavor   How is it used in Persian cuisine? Most traditionally used in an iconic Persian rice dish known as zereshk polo Almost always paired with chicken - Zereshk Polo Bah Morgh which means Barberry Rice with Chicken Mixed into koo koo sabzi, Persian herb quiche frittata Mixed into tahchin Used as a garnish for koo koo, tahchin, and sometimes jeweled rice dishes Modern uses - as a topping on cooked vegetables for example brussel sprouts   Preparing Zereshk Polo bah Morgh Wash and rinse the barberries before using - they sometimes have small stems Shortcuts - use precooked rice and chicken and prepare the zereshk as a topping Authentic version - cook chicken with preferred spices (turmeric, saffron, onion/garlic), saute zereshk in butter and sugar, layer rice with zereshk topping on a platter and arrange chicken around the rice Some folks add slivered almonds and or pistachios   Substitutions for zereshk Note - authentic is best!  Try to find zereshk in Persian or middle eastern markets or ask a friend or family member to bring some back from Iran as a souvenir on their next trip Dried cranberries - gives the same aesthetic of green with red.  Works well as a substitution for a “fake zereshk” polo would be thematic as a fall dish for American Thanksgiving for example Dried sour, tart cherries which mimic the color, are larger, but are also sour and already sweet in flavor (no sugar needed for the sweet and sour essence)   Note:  Storing Zereshk - store in a cool place or in the refrigerator or freezer   Ask the Beats The Beats ask each other, what is your favorite and least favorite Persian flavor or ingredient in Persian cuisine? Bita:  favorites include anything with rose water or saffron; least favorite are unique cuts of meat such as tongue, liver or kaleh pahchen Beata - favorites include a kick of sour from fresh squeezed lemon, vinegar, or torshi pickled vegetables   Contact us at hello@modernpersianfood.com or Instagram   Resources and recipes from this episode:   Episode 30: Tahchin Episode 3: Rice   Beata's recipe links: Persian Frittata Koo Koo Sabzi Persian Jeweled Tahchin Giti Joon's Famous Tacheen Recipe   Bita's recipe links:  Tah-Cheen | Baked Chicken and Rice Casserole  Persian Crispy Rice Cups | Tahchin Bites Kookoo Sabzi | Quiche Muffins   All Modern Persian Food episodes can be found at: Episodes Co-host Beata Nazem Kelley blog: BeatsEats – Persian Girl Desperately Addicted to Food! Berberis fremontii is in the Barberry family or Berberidaceae…that's fun to pronounce. Fremont barberry has quite a range north of the Salt River in Arizona and extends into Utah, Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico. Down in the borderlands around you and me we can find the barberry species B. repens, haematocarpa,  wilcoxii and trifoliata. Go way west to the Kofa Mountains and you'll find B. harrisoniana. That's a bunch of cool leathery spiny leaved evergreen shrubs in southern Arizona. If you were to grow some of our native Berberis species in a nursery/greenhouse setting you'd noticed that they're slow growing, at least at the start. Horticulture is a lot about patience. I like that and wish the attitude would carry through to home owners who always want something “that grows fast.”I think that's why we end up with so many non-native species in our domestic and urban landscapes, as folks just want something that's fast growing and really couldn't give a hoot whether it's native or not. “Petey, gimme fast”. Deep sigh.  I sure spend a lot of time trying to convince folks that native species will be a lot happier in their yards than the exotics they purchase from God knows where.  “Oh, and did I mention all the cool native critters that evolved with these native plants?” I shout as they walk away…another deep sigh. Anyway, now you know about some native barberry species and did I mention that there are nurseries that grow and sell them?  Yes! And yeah, they're slow growing at the start, but hey, what are you waiting for? Go native! The photos are mine of a Fremont barberry in our yard. Look at all the fruit and those pokey leathery leaves. You can see why birds are attracted to these shrubs when they are loaded with fruit. And all the species have yummy fruit for wildlife.

An estimated 1.13 billion people worldwide have hypertension, more than 65% of them are living in low- and middle-income countries. Today, barberry is a popular ornamental shrub. Plant catalogs offer a wide variety of barberry, ranging from the orange rocket to the crimson pygmy. However, barberry has not always been looked upon so kindly. In the early part of the twentieth century, it was viewed as the deadly enemy of wheat farmers. On this date in 1929, the Bismarck Tribune reported on a new program for use in elementary schools to educate children on the need to eradicate the bush.

Where does loosestrife belong? Is barberry a badberry? And what’s with all the knotweed everywhere?! Most folks will tell you it’s simple: “These are invasive plants. They’re bullies, who take over an area and crowd out “native” plants! They need to be pulled out, root and branch! No use for ’em – not a good seed in the lot!” … Whew. If that were true, there’d be no such thing as medicinal invasive plants – but we’re here to tell you, there is such a thing. Many such, actually! In this episode we’ll tell you all about three of our favorite “invasive” herbs in our part of the world: purple loosestrife, Japanese knotweed, and barberry (European and Japanese varieties). We’ll explore each one’s medicinal virtues and specific talents, drawing insights from historical & traditional practice, phytochemistry, and our own experiences working with these plants to solve problems and improve health. In the process, we’ll work to challenge some of the underlying assumptions in the standard narrative about invasive plants. Too often, this concept is predicated on unexamined biased assumptions about what it means to be “native” and what it means to be otherwise. The truth is, plants aren’t native to geography, they’re native to ecology. As the environment changes, the places plants live must change too. Thinking differently about invasives can help us better understand and relate to our changing world.Herbs discussed include purple loosestrife, Japanese knotweed, barberry, & autumn olive. Also mentioned in this episode:Where Do Camels Belong?, Ken ThompsonHow Wolves Change Rivers1491, Charles MannInvasive Plant Medicine, Tim ScottIf you’re a regular listener, by now you’ve heard us talk about our podcast supporters – and maybe you’re wondering how to become one, yourself! This might sound like a movie pitch: A young woman leaves Iran after a revolution, comes to America to start a new life, becomes a mother, who was always cooking and more than 35 years later—with no professional training and against all odds, opens an acclaimed restaurant in New York at age 59, becoming the driver of a trendy new cuisine in Manhattan. For now, it’s not a movie. It’s the life of Nasim Alikhani, founder of Sofreh. Nasim joins Chef Rozanne Gold in the MouthMedia Network studio. In this episode: How from the minute it opened , her restaurant has has been pretty much impossible to get into How its popularity is as much a product of Nasim's particular brand of hospitality as of the delicious food The importance placed on entertaining guests in Iran How Nasim  almost didn’t make it through to to the restaurant’s opening day Her strong vision of every aspect of the restaurant and why it makes the guests feel transported How Nasim's deep spirituality has permeated her business The way a touching poem from her father has meant everything The importance off Nasim's acute sense of smell Typical Iranian food, always tea, eating a lot Why Nasim didn’t want restaurant to look like a typical one  Why an open kitchen, and bright, inviting atmosphere, smells An extension of home and parties A lot of care and time in these dishes The difference her solid prep team makes Timing. And rhythm, a prepaid service The challenges of opening her first restaurant age of 59 Always preparing for a restaurant in her mind Barberries The value of a beautifully well done rice as a satisfying meal The risk of starting down the restaurant journey or carrying the burden of not following through Iranian vs. American women in food, and in general The legacy of tiny meatballs Giving everything you can
