The Setting Trick: Conversations with World Class Bridge Players
In this episode, John interviews Lynn Castoldi, fresh off two huge wins at the Spring NABC — the 10K Knockout Teams and the Women's Swiss Teams, the latter by a razor-thin margin of just 0.13 VPs. With her signature laugh, Lynn shares the stories behind her victories, her partnership with Ann Karin Fuglestad, and how she went from getting kicked out of bridge lessons at a senior center to becoming a national champion. Along the way, we hear about bridge cruises, recruiting Egyptian pros on BBO, and the stylish team scarves that helped tie it all together. Whether she's playing with a world-class junior or her long-time partner the “Minister of Defense,” Lynn brings enthusiasm, optimism, and a love of the game that's totally contagious. Key Takeaways from This Episode:
Conflict is a part of life, whether it's in our relationships, workplaces, or even global politics, yet many of us either shy away from it or escalate it, leading to stress, resentment, and division. Today on Finding Brave, behavioral neurologist Dr. Joel Salinas joins us to discuss how we can navigate disagreement with confidence and resilience—and even turn it into a powerful tool for building stronger connections. Dr. Salinas is a Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and the co-author with Robert C. Bordone, of Conflict Resilience: Negotiating Disagreement Without Giving Up or Giving In. In this fascinating book, Joel and Robert blend advanced conflict management strategies with cutting-edge neuroscience to introduce a simple yet powerful three-step framework for navigating everyday conflict. In this episode, Dr. Salinas reveals how conflict resilience rather than resolution can transform the way we engage with disagreement. He also explores the impact of social isolation, our fear of discomfort, and how avoiding conflict can ultimately weaken both personal and professional relationships, all while offering practical tools to navigate tough conversations with confidence, clarity, and compassion. Whether you struggle with difficult conversations or simply want to strengthen your relationships and your communication approach, this episode is filled with valuable insights to help you approach conflict with clarity, confidence, and bravery. Tune in now to start transforming the way you engage with disagreement. Key Highlights From This Episode: Understanding the surprising link between connection and conflict. Natalie Pearl has been running her own dance school for 20 years. In 2017, due to the small number of boys attending, she started a boys-only class to encourage more boys into the studio. Since then, she hasn't looked back! The class grew rapidly, and now consistently has 50-60 boys attending her dance school. In 2021, Natalie won the RAD Project B award for innovation in male dance and delivered numerous seminars and talks for the RAD and BBO. That same year, she founded National Boys Dance Day, which in 2023 saw 100 boys from across the UK joining together for a fabulous day of dance. Her mission is simple - to make dance a hobby for boys as much as football or rugby. There are so many boys out there who want to dance, and Natalie is dedicated to giving them a place to thrive. This will be looked at as the dark age of Giants football, but where it is dark, there is always light to be found......eventually. Although it's another long season, at least the guys from BBO are here to give you a laugh.
On this episode, our correspondent, Scott Lilwall, takes us to the 2nd oldest migration monitoring observatory in Canada: the Beaverhill Bird Observatory (BBO). BBO was established in 1984 and has gathered decades of datasets that help them track changes in bird populations and how they migrate. And they boast several programs to encourage education, research, and community knowledge. Programs like the Young Ornithologists Workshop! BBO is an Important Bird Area. It is an Internationally Significant Wetland, and it is a space where we can all share knowledge and appreciation for Alberta's natural history. To help continue their work far into […]

Greg Humphreys, a talented software engineer and accomplished bridge player is featured in this episode of The Setting Trick. He is the winner of the Mott-Smith Trophy at the recent spring North American Bridge Championships, a three-time North American champion, and the best bridge player in Charlottesville, Virginia. He got hooked on bridge in 1998 and quickly joined a local club, where he found success playing with Walter Miller's 49er club. Greg studied computer science at Princeton and Stanford before moving to Charlottesville, VA, to teach at the University of Virginia. Also, Greg has since left academia and worked for several startups and major tech companies like Nvidia, Google, and Twitch. In addition to his impressive career in computer science, Greg has also made a name for himself in the world of bridge. He has succeeded in various tournaments, including the Mixed Pairs, Platinum Pairs, Mixed BAM, and Fast Pairs. Greg and Jenni Carmichael typically play together once a year in the Mixed Pairs, which they won in 2016 and have also finished second, third, fourth, and fifth. In 2018 they made it to the finals of the World Open Pairs. This spring in Reno, they finished second in the Mixed Pairs. Greg also finished 11th in the Silodor Pairs and won the Fast Pairs, playing with Adam Parrish. On the other hand, when not playing bridge, Greg enjoys spending time in his woodshop, playing video games, and traveling. He also enjoys watching RuPaul's Drag Race. Also, Greg streams his bridge games on Twitch, where he plays against friends and robots on BBO. In this conversation, Greg shares a wealth of insights and experiences about his journey in the world of Bridge. He discusses his best-ever result in a tournament, the pressure of leading, and the impact of small mistakes. He recalls an unusual game where the opposing team doubled their bid and made a strange opening lead. Greg explains how miscommunication about a bridge bidding system leads to confusion and the importance of immersing oneself in bridge and discussing hands with better players. He also talks about his accidental discovery of bridge on Yahoo and how he fell in love with the game through books and local clubs. Additionally, Greg discusses his unique relay precision system with Jenni and the advantages of playing a solid diamond system. He mentions his experience of streaming himself playing Bridge on Twitch and the importance of supporting your partner in Bridge and dealing with bad results.

Primordial black holes and gravitational waves from non-canonical inflation by Theodoros Papanikolaou et al. on Tuesday 29 November Primordial black holes (PBHs) can generically form in inflationary setups through the collapse of enhanced cosmological perturbations, providing us access to the early Universe through their associated observational signatures. In the current work we propose a new mechanism of PBH production within non-canonical inflation, using a class of steep-deformed inflationary potentials compatible with natural values for the non-canonical exponents. In particular, by requiring significant PBH production we extract constraints on the non-canonical exponents. Additionally, we find that our scenario can lead to the formation of asteroid-mass PBHs, which can account for the totality of the dark matter, as well as to production of solar-mass PBHs within the LIGO/VIRGO detection band. Finally, we find that the enhanced cosmological perturbations which collapse to form PBHs can produce a stochastic gravitational-wave (GW) background induced by second-order gravitational interactions. Very interestingly, we obtain a GW signal detectable by future GW experiments, in particular by SKA, LISA and BBO. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.14900v1

Gravitational Waves from the Propagation of Long Gamma-Ray Burst jets by Gerardo Urrutia et al. on Wednesday 23 November Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced during the propagation of ultra-relativistic jets. It is challenging to study the jet close to the central source, due to the high opacity of the medium. In this paper, we present numerical simulations of relativistic jets propagating through a massive, stripped envelope star associated to long GRBs, breaking out of the star and accelerating into the circumstellar medium. We compute the gravitational wave (GW) signal resulting from the propagation of the jet through the star and the circumstellar medium. We show that key parameters of the jet propagation can be directly determined by the GW signal. The signal presents a first peak corresponding to the jet duration and a second peak which corresponds to the break-out time for an observer located close to the jet axis (which in turn depends on the stellar size), or to much larger times (corresponding to the end of the acceleration phase) for off-axis observers. We also show that the slope of the GW signal before and around the first peak tracks the jet luminosity history and the structure of the progenitor star. The amplitude of the GW signal is $h_+D sim$ hundreds to several thousands cm. Although this signal, for extragalactic sources, is outside the range of detectability of current GW detectors, it can be detected by future instruments as BBO, DECIGO and ALIA. Our results illustrate that future detections of GW associated to GRB jets may represent a revolution in our understanding of this phenomenon. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2208.00129v2

Pull up a chair to this three-hour sideshow as we get to know the guys of Banging Bottom Outfitters. BBO, out of Western PA, guides primarily on Pymatuning, and consists of Doug Vanasco, Jesse Barnhart, Joel Morrow, and Brian Luffey. The eight of us talk about how the guys got their start, and of course how they got the name. We talk a little bit about what they believe in as far as their day-to-day mentality, and some useful tips for anglers who may be struggling or just feeling the pressure of musky fishing. After a few drinks, things go completely off the rails, and Doug decides to give away his secret spots and interview us. Joel debunks rumors of his famous "musky call" and talks about his preferred choice of footwear. Jesse ruins the perfect streak. Luffey talks a little about something he has, and something we've discussed in the past: pontoons for musky trolling. Donnie gives Doug COVID.
Omg! Ya'll I promise next week I will not be LATE, I had a crazy week! I have a few new changes, better audio, new intro, sound effects, and more! I am so tired of black men constantly tearing black women down on a regular basis. I had to speak up for us and settle this! No man should be discussing what a female has going on. Thank you for 300+ listeners in less than 2 months! BBO! ❤️
After almost a year the BBO crew is back at it bringing fresh opinions and insight. We took a year off to regroup and restructure the show but we're ready to go once again. This wee's episode is all about abortions and infidelity people!!!! Listen, Like, Subscribe
For the final movie review of season 2, Jeff and Pat are talking about Outlaw King, a war/drama period piece surrounding Scotland's First War of Independence. It's a film that might be considered a sort of unofficial "spiritual sequel" to Braveheart. That, or a pale imitation, depending on which BBO host you ask.
This week, Jeff and Pat joined Tish MacWebber to stream a live wine review. They test how the Grinder Pinotage holds up to the BBO 3.5 star review system. They also discuss creative alternatives to corkscrews, Bryce Dallas Howard's poor choice of running shoes, and complain about their emotionally unavailable pets.

In this episode, Maggie Morris talks about Safe in Dance International. This is a wonderful organization that works to promote safe and healthy dance practice worldwide. Maggie provides a brief summary of the tools and resources that they have available for dancers and dance teachers. In addition to being the Co-Founder of Safe in Dance International, Maggie is also a dance educator and an arts consultant. Maggie's interest in healthy dance practice stems from her career as a dancer, choreographer, artistic director and dance educator. She began her career in New York where she danced with several companies including the Murray Louis Dance Company, where she was a soloist touring internationally. She also worked with Alwin Nikolais, Placido Domingo and Dave Brubeck and performed in musical theatre, film and television. On her return to England in 1990 Maggie took up the position of Artistic Director at Phoenix Dance Company, and international touring repertory company. With Phoenix she noted the high levels of injury and illness and worked with Jiannis Koutadakis and other health professionals to develop programmes and support systems within her company to improve dancer's fitness levels, reduce injury ease the pressures of performance. This research on the company contributed to the developments in Dance UK's Healthier Dance Programme. After leaving Phoenix Maggie focussed her work more on dance education and training and as well as delivering training in technique, choreographer and repertory she was the Head of Undergraduate Studies at Laban, London from 1998 – 2000. Over the past 18 years Maggie's has balanced her career between dance educator, consultant and healthy dance advocate. As such her work has ranged from working with the UK government to support the improvement of performing arts training in the UK, becoming an HMI in 2001 on a team of performing arts specialists looking at professional performing arts training in the UK, delivering leadership and management training on behalf of the Department of Education to Principles and CEO's of professional training colleges and Conservetoire Schools. Buy Injured to Elite the Book on AmazonJoin the Injured to Elite NetworkMental toughness seems to have been preached and praised to athletes as long as athletes have competed...But the problem lies when already "mentally tough" athletes find themselves broken (mentally and physically) after injury. This is where I believe embracing vulnerability can shine. Cue in the work I have discovered by Dr. Brené Brown, world renowned author and Ted speaker on "The Power of Vulnerability". In this solo episode I present a bigger and better offer (BBO) to mental toughness after injury for athletes to embody, inspired by the very relevant work of Dr. Brown. This is Romy, and I will be your host for another great episode here at Bonfires. You will meet the courageous Henry Le and hear about Imagtor in Vietnam. And, of course, we have a talented Detroit artist. Grace Elizabeth Lee joins us for the second time with her song, Like a Bird so stay tuned until the end! Before we meet Henry, let's check out what Jentzen came up with for this episode's fun fuel. Fun Fuel Jentzen: Photography is a word derived from the Greek words photos (light) and graphien (to draw). In 1827 Joseph Niepce created the first photographic image with a camera obscure. However, Niepce's photography required 8 hours of sunlight to make and the image would soon fade after appearing. In 1879 the dry plate was invented and making it possible for handheld cameras to be made. In 1889 George Eastman created the flexible film roll with made mass producing box cameras a reality. In 1940 color film was created for the mass producing box cameras. Over the years, many additions were made to the camera, such as better lenses, the flashlight bulb, and flash powder. Developing into the cameras we see today. This is Jentzen with your fun fuel for this episode! Enjoy the show! Romy: Thank you, Jentzen. Photography, at least as we know it today, isn't very old. Interesting. Even though photography has become easy for all of us to capture, it doesn't always mean that the photos are good. That is why we sometimes need some professional help from teams like Henry's in Vietnam. Let's listen in to my conversation as I am learning about Henry and his company, Imagtor. Main Interview Henry: I am a co-founder of Imagtor it is a new social enterprise from Vietnam which just launched last March. After three month pilot, we actually started in business three months ago. We are providing professional photography editing service to international customers, especially to customers from the United States and Australia. We focus on editing the photography of real estate, portrait grading, fashion and product photography. We are a BBO outsourcing company, so what makes us different from other BBO companies, especially ones from India, is that at Imagtor 80% of our staff, currently we have 20 are with disabilities, so at Imagtor we don't call them employees, but we call them partners. We also have a social mission we use our positive profit which we can say 30% go to the development and activities of commonization for our people with disabilities in Vietnam. Hopefully, we can duplicate with this model to the other countries in the future. Romy: Wow, that's a lot and let me repeat that for our listeners. It's professional photo editing and some of the terminology BBO that would be a business to business, or business outsourcing, is more what that stands for right? Henry: It is business outsourcing's, yes. Romy: So you're doing professional photo editing, and we call it business outsourcing. Most of your staff, 80% of your employees is with physical or some disability, and you're giving away 30% of your real profits to other organizations that help with disabilities in Vietnam. That's amazing. Henry: That is correct, thank you. Romy: Gosh, so you're newly open, how did you come up with the idea for photo editing? Henry: Well first of all Vietnam like according...
