A long-lost prop from the original 1977 Star Wars film was auctioned off for a record-breaking $5.3 million. The 50cm X-Wing Starfighter model was considered missing for decades, before being found in a cardboard box in the garage of an Oscar nominated model maker. Toy Collecting Expert, Bob Collins, told Mike Hosking that it's likely that the model maker wouldn't have a clue that it was going to be worth so much. He said that collectables become desirable due to the nostalgia factor, as people want to recapture their memories. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bob Collins & Mark Matthews in conversation with David Eastaugh https://preciousrecordingsoflondon.bandcamp.com/album/pre-029-the-dentists-janice-long-session-020487 The band met at school in the early 1980s and began playing gigs in their local area around Chatham and Rochester. Their first single, "Strawberries are Growing in My Garden (and It's Wintertime)", was quickly followed by the album Some People Are On The Pitch They Think It's All Over It Is Now (a reference to Kenneth Wolstenholme's famous commentary at the end of the 1966 World Cup). The record was produced by Allan Crockford of fellow Medway band The Prisoners and featured the standout track, "I Had An Excellent Dream".

A-HA! We go "back to the future" to 1985 to discuss our Top 5 Songs from that incredible year. In many ways, 1985 was the heart of the BIG 80s...big hair, big, loud day-glo imagery, big booming snare drums, big synth sounds, big hits. On the other hand, 1985 was also a year filled with a lot of incredible indie pop, garage rock, neo-pysch and post-punk music. One of those bands was The Dentists, a leading light of the Medway, UK scene in the mid-80s. They debuted in 1985 with a prolific spate of releases: their first single, "Strawberries Are Growing In My Garden (And It's Wintertime)", the full-length album Some People Are On The Pitch They Think It's All Over It Is Now and a six-track EP, You And Your Bloody Oranges. Each release masterfully blended '60s psych-pop, garage, and chiming, harmony-laden folk-rock that was mercifully out of step with the "Big 80s" sound. Over the course of the next decade, the band would release 1990's Heads And How To Read Them, 1993's Powdered Lobster Fiasco, 1994's Behind The Door I Keep The Universe, and 1995's Deep 6 (the last two for major label Warner subsidiary EastWest), as well as more singles, EPs, and compilations. The AllMusic Guide refers to The Dentists as "arguably the first Britpop band." It is our great pleasure to welcome Dentists' guitarist Bob Collins and bassist Mark Matthews as our Third Lads this week. Along with a 40 year history as friends, Mark and Bob are bandmates once again in The Treasures Of Mexico. They offer great insights on their history, and took their homework assignment seriously, coming up with a fantastic and thoughtful list of 1985 tracks. During the show, you will hear The Treasures Of Mexico's 2021 single "Always The Shadows" and vintage 1985 Dentists track "I Had An Excellent Dream." Finally...a Dentists visit to look forward to!

The Bob Cummings Show (also known as Love That Bob) is an American sitcom starring Bob Cummings, which was broadcast from January 2, 1955, to September 15, 1959. The Bob Cummings Show was the first series to debut as a midseason replacement. The program began with a half-season run on NBC, then ran for two full seasons on CBS, and returned to NBC for its final two seasons. The program was later rerun on ABC daytime and then syndicated under the title Love That Bob. A similar (but less successful) follow-up series, The New Bob Cummings Show, was broadcast on CBS during the 1961–62 television season. Overview. The series stars Cummings as dashing Hollywood photographer, Air Force reserve officer, and ladies' man, Bob Collins. The character's interest in aviation and photography mirrored Cummings' own, with his character's name the same as the role he played in the 1945 film You Came Along. The series also stars Rosemary DeCamp as his sister Margaret MacDonald. In some episodes, Cummings also doubled as Bob and Margaret's grandfather, Josh Collins of Joplin, Missouri. The Bob Cummings Show was important in the development of several careers including series creator, producer, and head writer Paul Henning. Henning, who a decade earlier was a major force in the character development and writing of The Burns and Allen television and radio shows, was a co-producer with George Burns of the Cummings show. He later produced such major 1960s hits as The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, and Green Acres. Regulars in the show included Ann B. Davis, who twice won Emmy Awards for playing Bob Collins' assistant Schultzy. Henning apparently remembered cast members Nancy Kulp and Joi Lansing favorably, giving both of them roles several years later on The Beverly Hillbillies, Kulp as Miss Hathaway (secretary to banker Milburn Drysdale — a character similar to Pamela Livingstone, the one she played on Cummings' show) – and Lansing as Gladys Flatt, wife of Lester Flatt. A decade after The Bob Cummings Show left the air, Davis went on to play the housekeeper Alice in The Brady Bunch. In the 1995 film The Brady Bunch Movie, which featured another actress playing Alice, Davis reprised the role of Schultzy for a cameo that suggests the character went on to become a truck driver. Olive Sturgess appeared in 12 episodes as Carol Henning, girlfriend to Bob's nephew, Chuck. Versatile character actress Kathleen Freeman appeared in six episodes as Bertha Krause. Perhaps the biggest career boost was received by young Dwayne Hickman, a student at Loyola University in Los Angeles, who appeared as the nephew and became a favorite with young female viewers. During the last season of The Bob Cummings Show, he was cast as the lead in CBS's The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. This program represented the height of Cummings' television career. Although he later starred in two other early-'60s series, The New Bob Cummings Show and My Living Doll, and made guest appearances on several other TV series, he never again achieved that level of success on television. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dwight-allen/message

Journal of Commerce staff writer Russell Hixson is off this week so it's a solo show with digital media editor Warren Frey but we still have plenty to talk about, especially the second part of our Cracks in the Foundation series about substance use and mental health in the construction industry. In addition to part one of Russell's interview with Trevor Botkin of HeroWork which aired on Friday on the Construction Record podcast, Warren also highlights an article about the recent “Lone Hunter” video put out by Re-Mind which points construction workers at a website where they can access mental health information and services. RE-MIND is a collaboration between the BC Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA) and Work to Wellness Rehabilitation Ltd. (Work to Wellness). We also have a series of videos starting this week where Daily Commercial News staff writer Angela Gismondi speaks to Rob Trymbulak about his decades of working in the construction industry while struggling with substance use, and we've included a clip from the interview in this episode. Daily Commercial News staff writer Don Wall also has a story coming later in the week about apprentices training to become sheet metal workers at Ottawa's Smart Local 47 Training Centre who learn not only about the physical demands of the job but also the mental strains of both the job and a construction career. Angela also attended the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers conference last week and covered a panel called “The Future of the Workplace” where the panelists sought to increase equity and representation post-pandemic. Don also has a story about the recent Ontario Construction Secretariat conference in Niagara-on-the-Lake where BuildForce senior economist Bob Collins had good news and bad news for delegates attending his presentation on labour force issues. Chuck Swirsky, is an American-Canadian radio sports announcer. He is the play-by-play voice of the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Swirsky's association with Chicago sports started in 1979 with his WCFL AM 1000 talk show which debuted on August 27 of that year. Outside Chicago, Swirsky called play-by-play for both University of Michigan basketball and football and was formerly the play-by-play voice of the Toronto Raptors. Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Swirsky grew up in Bellevue, Washington and is a graduate of Interlake High School. Starting in 1979, Swirsky hosted a nightly sports radio show on WCFL (AM 1000) where he talked Chicago sports with callers. Swirsky then moved to WLUP (The Loop) where he provided afternoon sports updates and hosted a Sunday night sports radio show from 9 to 11 pm through 1981. During this time, Swirsky was named the Chicago Bulls public address announcer from 1980 to 1983. Swirsky next joined WGN radio in 1981 and remained through the mid-1990s. Swirsky hosted various sports talk shows and provided sports updates. While he was with WGN, he also did play-by-play for DePaul games alongside former coach Ray Meyer and also did Chicago Bears pre-game and post-game coverage. He also made frequent appearances on the Bob Collins radio show discussing Chicago sports, with Collins dubbing him "The Swirsk" as a nickname. During his time at WGN, a man dressed as Max Headroom who hijacked a broadcast of Doctor Who made a mocking reference to Swirsky, calling him "a frickin' liberal". Bruce Wolf frequently parodied Swirsky with a fictional character, "Chet Chitchat", which is a blended caricature of Chicago sportscasters Chet Coppock and Swirsky. During his time at WGN Radio, Swirsky filled in as a sports anchor on an occasional basis at WGN-TV.

We have a hilarious talk about his career in radio and journalism, our current (ahem) age of artifice and how some people actually love retirement and not working anymore. He's understated and whip smart.

The Dentists were an indie/pop band from the Medway towns (as part of the Medway scene) in England who were active from 1984 to 1995. The band's permanent members were Mick Murphy (lead vocals), Bob Collins (guitar) and Mark Matthews (bass). The band also had three different drummers: Ian Smith (1984–1986), Alun Jones (1986–1991) and Rob Grigg (1991–1995). All members participated in writing songs. Mark ('Jock') Reid was Mick Murphy's predecessor as lead singer for the band in 1983 when they were known as The Ancient Gallery.

In this episode, architect and long-time SF resident Bob Collins recalls transforming his super tiny apartment and how, in the process, he discovers the real reasons why he calls San Francisco home. Bob has lived in the Bay for 30 years, with stints in the Mission, Nob Hill, Russian Hill, and the Richmond. He has a blog about walking around San Francisco called Urban Ambles, told from the dual perspectives of a regular pedestrian and professional architect. His walks in the blog cover a cross-section of the city; just like some of our favorite Muni stories from the cross-town lines. Go to MuniDiaries.com to check out a photos of how Bob transformed his tiny apartment. We're celebrating 10 years of storytelling on and off the bus with a special bonus code for our upcoming anniversary show on April 21, 2018, at the Elbo Room. In this episode I talk with Bob Collins of the Medicus Firm, a physician recruitment firm. Bob has spent many years in this field and gives great insight into the job hunt. Many physicians now use a recruiter to help with searching for the right job. We talk about the job market and what is hot right now in the medical field, what can a recruiter do for you, and some of the tips he has gained from years in this field. Primary care and psychiatrists seem to be in major demand. Whether you choose to use a recruiter or not, I think it is valuable to know what they can do for you. In my opinion, using a recruiter is much like using a financial advisor or real estate agent, you can do this yourself, but having someone help guide you may help prevent mistakes in this process. Key points in this episode Start the process early, particularly if you are in a field that may not be in as much demand. Involve your significant other in the process. Many times a job maybe fine, but the situation is not great because your partner is unhappy with the location. Salary is only one component of a great job. Location and work environment are the other big factors. It can be hard to get all three in one situation. You should weigh how important each of these factors are to you and your family before selecting a position Use all the resources at your disposal to find the job that is your best fit. Stipends and loan repayment are starting to become more common again for in demand fields. Remember your first job is likely not the one you will stay with forever as healthcare is not immune to the rapid workplaces changes in most fields. Keep up with the job market even if you are in a good situation currently. You can find out more about The Medicus Firm at www.themedicusfirm.com More episodes of this podcast are available at www.doctormoneymatters.com Thanks for listening and please continue to share with your colleagues.
